Saturday, May 16th 2020 Dear Attendees, Friends, Sponsors & Supporters: The Board of Directors welcomes you all to Philo4Thought's 2020 Spring Symposium, "Business, Innovation & Society," and thanks all those who contributed to the preparations of today's lectures, awards and discussions. Innovation is a vocational calling to address a need for progress and reform. It is at once a tremendous gift and responsibility, not to be undertaken by the faint of heart. To be a part of this enterprise one needs to have a warrior spirit and an unshakable faith that, regardless of whether a task fails or succeeds it will result in progress. Even a little sparrow has the strength to build, survive and fly to the heights of its potential. As human beings we tend to become consumed by “the race” to achieve, but should focus on only one type of race to make the greatest strides — the human race. Many of us are very much the product of both the old and new worlds influenced by Eastern and Western thought, and call more than one place "home" with equal pride and dignity. "Our Place" is not confined to one property line, job title or family. We are global citizens in a rapidly changing world. We are one family and this is our time, our place. Today, more than ever, we have been called upon to find novel and creative means of developing effective outreach, research, innovation, education and collaboration. We have been pushed to use our greatest tools for growth and flourishing. It is in this spirit that we claim the title “Hellenic Mentoring Initiative” and call each of you to draw on the things we share in common. In 2020, more than ever, we are expected to be quick-thinking innovators, changing with the times without wavering from the Greek roots that are such a vital part of who we are and how we form our core values. Being Greek… is a gift. Our natural tenacity in all things, be it from planting the first seeds of our faith to exploring the infinite possibilities of cyberspace, has always been complex and yet intuitively clear. The knowledge and resources at our disposal have a vast potential to help build sustainable opportunities for youth and young professionals at the local, regional, national and global levels. As citizens of an increasingly global community, it is our responsibility to be social “disrupters” and create life-changing, game-changing opportunities to next-generation professionals and to recognize the fine work of those who move the community forward, propagating the Good Life prescribed by Aristotle centuries ago. Branding and communication strategies, the keystones to forming successful connections for any initiative, is based on our ability to appeal to others. In searching for the answer to successful personal or professional branding we come to realize that the Aristotelian concepts of Ethos, Logos and Pathos don't start outside of you; the root of Pathos comes from an understanding of oneself, which is then used to create stronger bonds and progress with others. In considering “what works” in reaching one’s audience, we advise today’s youth to focus on what distinguishes you from others; consider these your greatest assets, seek to understand them, to know who you are, who you need around you, and where you fit within the larger scheme of things in work and in life. Always remember that no matter where you are in life it’s an opportunity to experience, absorb, learn and move forward with clarity and support. Today we’re blessed to have an array of brilliant philanthropic guest speakers, mentors and honorees, each with a distinguished life path devoted to service, education, innovation and productivity. We thank each of them for taking the time to share their perspectives with us and hope each of you will take away something valuable for the future. We are very blessed, honored, and humbled to have the amazing support of these distinguished individuals as well as our esteemed 2020 sponsors in making opportunities available to the Hellenic young professional community. Ευχαριστούμε πάρα πολύ! Without further delay, we invite you to enjoy today’s scheduled talks and activities. On behalf of our Executive Board,

Chris Salboudis Founding Director & CEO www.philo4thought.org

Consulate General of Greece New York

New York, May 12th, 2020

Dear Friends, friends, Dear We often say drastic times call for drastic measures. 2020 will become the year when this phrase will prove its worth. This year’s event ‘Philo4Thought Symposium’ will be entirely virtual, thrusting its way into a new chapter of what we name digital revolution, which will inevitably impact all three topics of our discussion: business, innovation and society. The more we see our mobile phones becoming an extension of our arm and the more the ‘Internet of things’ becomes the ‘internet of us’, then we will be witnessing the direction of all industries shifting. Is this the end of the world as we know it? Will societies fall apart because of this new disruption? Identity issues are raised even for century-old institutions such as the role of a state. Will it continue to regulate the way we enjoy our rights, educate ourselves, do business and solve our disputes? The pandemic outbreak of 2020 showed us that people turn to their governments for guidance and demand solutions. Technology, science and economy have never before intertwined more ubiquity in our modern times. Put together, they make a strategy. But the question remains: what type of leadership do societies need to build their own strategy? These pressing questions will be raised during the Spring 2020 Symposium because we all feel the need to guide our next generation of professionals, our new Hellenic-American leaders. The Consulate General of Greece in New York wishes to congratulate the Hellenic Mentoring Initiative for their continuous efforts and commitment to supporting the Hellenic-American Community. Although a Symposium is meant to come after a banquet, in our virtual reality we are satisfied with having plenty of food for thought.

Konstantinos Koutras Consul General

COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY Center for Genome Technology & Biomolecular Engineering

Dear All:

May 1, 2020

On behalf of the Center for Genome Technology & Biomolecular Engineering (CGT-BE) we congratulate Philo4Thought’s Executive Board and team of dedicated volunteers – many of whom have studied here at Columbia – on the continuation of their fine efforts to provide students and young professionals with opportunities that will educate and empower them, especially during the current pandemic. Chris Salboudis has lent her expert administrative and student support to our interdisciplinary research group since 2005 while gaining additional doctoral-level training in the study of educational technology and its applications in diverse learning communities at Columbia Teachers College over the years, which led to the collaborative preparations for this year’s virtual symposium along with several other interdisciplinary educational symposiums. Her determination to form a synergy between students and professionals in different areas of expertise is truly admirable. Through diligent efforts, Philo4Thought has hosted its annual symposium at Columbia from 20152017, collaborating with prominent faculty as well as several student and alumni groups, including the Columbia Business School, the Hellenic Studies Program, the Hellenic Students Association, Women In Science at Columbia, the Columbia Alumni Association and the Columbia Club to support the academic and professional advancement of those in attendance. In 2016 I had the pleasure to provide support of their STEM Conference at Lerner Hall, which let to more robust recruitment of faculty and research experts from top universities and companies who served as speakers and mentors at the conference and for the many years since then. Philo4Thought’s team has done an amazing job in the recruitment of the finest speakers and advisors available for today’s young scholars and professionals. We are very pleased to see that the group has expanded since its inception and that the affiliated campus groups and partnerships that are continually forming are growing stronger through ongoing collaborations to this and related on- and off-campus educational initiatives. We wish them the best of luck in all ongoing efforts to promote collaborative philanthropic applications of innovative technological ventures. We would also like to offer our sincere congratulations to all those graduating this year, who are being honored by both the New York State Attorney General and Philo4Thought. Best of luck in the years ahead. Sincerely,

Jingyue Ju. Ph.D. Samuel Ruben-Peter G. Viele Professor of Engineering Professor of Chemical Engineering and Pharmacology Director, Center for Genome Technology & Biomolecular Engineering Columbia University New York, NY 10027

NYS Assembly Honorees Lifetime Achievement Carol Contos We are deeply honored to present this year’s Certificate of Lifetime Excellence to one of the most dynamic women in our network for her countless years of dedication and service to marginalized individuals struggling in work and in life. She is a remarkable example for people from all walks of life. Mrs. Contos, a beloved philanthropist, community advocate and educator of over 30 years, for her outstanding contributions to the community and, on a more personal level, for the way in which she has taken the time and effort to touch the hearts and lives of so many. Celebrated for that combination of modest dignity and strength as well as her charismatic charm, Mrs. Contos is a true embodiment of what the DOP and AHEPA represent. She has spent a lifetime promoting the deepest values of our culture and faith, truly embodying the concept Philotimo (φιλότιμο) in her lasting and positive impact in the lives of so many. We are proud to share her story with you today. As such, she is an exemplary role model for today's professional woman and for all young ladies of the generation ahead, which is why Philo4Thought and the New York State Assembly have chosen her as our 2020 Lifetime Honoree. In speaking with Mrs. Contos when she was honored as the Daughters of Penelope’s (DOP) Woman of the Year (2019), she explains that her own philanthropic contributions started with her participation on an annual cancer fundraising campaign but that most of her philanthropic work has been church-related. She served as Vice President of the National Philoptochos Society under Archbishop Iakovos and was President of the local chapter at the Archdiocesan Cathedral of the Holy Trinity for several years in addition to being a member of the Cathedral Church Board for many years. Professionally, Mrs. Contos taught for over thirty years and was one of the rare instructors for outreach programs dedicated to teaching pregnant women and young parents who were unable to complete traditional high school. She also taught girls in prison who were aiming for a GED equivalency to turn a new leaf and become active and productive members of society. “And that’s it.” She says in the simple and open way that her many family and friends so love and respect. When congratulated for instilling this strong philanthropic community spirit in her family, Mrs. Contos candidly shares, “It all began with my parents, really, who were both educators and promoted the Greek language and culture really more than anyone I know in the U.S. They were part of that first of the group of educators of the Greek American Institute who salvaged the school back in 1938 during the depression when it was going to be closed due to lack of funding to pay the space and the teachers. My father took it over and made it into one of the most prestigious day schools in the country.” In her address at the 2019 DOP reception in her honor, Mrs. Contos shared, "I've always lived by three simple rules: kindness, respect, and 'do unto others'...." This direct, philanthropic mindset is exactly what leads us to celebrate the inspirational example she sets for her family and the many others who know of her remarkable character and accomplishments and have benefited from her selfless community outreach.

Keynote Honoree: Certificate of Excellence for Innovative Leadership Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou We are deeply honored to present this year’s Certificate of Excellence for Innovative Leadership to our 2020 Keynote Honoree, Despina Panayiotou Theodosiou, for her outstanding contributions to our global community, her unique contributions to the initiative to empower professional women in an extremely challenging industry, and her dedication to continually seeking innovative means for improvement throughout the industry of maritime trade.

Proceeds & Donations Since Philo4Thought’s inception, the Executive Board has made every effort to work with students and young professionals from all areas of interest as they take strides to flourish. Alumni from Philo4Thought, NHSA and affiliate HYP organizations lead the next generation by example from the vantage point of very successful Hellenic Professionals with remarkable professional and personal convictions and an admirable sense of community spirit and service. In the 2020-2021 academic year a special fundraising initiative will be held to research, identify and improve opportunities for the use of collaborative technological resources that will open the door for Hellenic students to obtain a more robust level of educational and professional training. This year select funds were earmarked to provide minor scholarships to students who are in dire need of financial aid and meet the criterion for the Attorney General’s Triple C Award for excellence in times of financial and medical crisis. We hope to continue working with the community to identify and support one eligible youth every year. Proceeds remaining after each annual event go towards the support of Philo4Thought’s ongoing philanthropic educational initiatives (listed above) and to help us acquire the resources needed to continue improving our programming and outreach efforts.
