Dear Attendees, Friends, Sponsors & Supporters : May 6, 2023

This year I have the distinct pleasure to offer you all a very joyous “Welcome Home” on behalf of both the Philo4Thought and St John’s University family Our Symposium, Promethean Fire: Mentoring Across the Disciplines marks a special occasion for many new and returning SJU Alum among our board members, panelists and guests Today we’re serving two missions that go hand-in-hand – the ancient concept of Philotimo and the more modern Vincentian Mission

Philo4Thought was based on these principles and uses the ancient practice of mentoring to sow seeds of hope, anticipation and philotimo to enable a brighter, sustainable future for the next generation The concept of Promethean Fire – which encompasses the theme of today’s symposium as well as our 2023 podcasts and empowerment summit – represents more than just light It’s a spirit, vitality, intensity, energy and potential that comes to us as a divine gift as mentioned in both ancient mythology and throughout our religious traditions

Back when I was a young faculty member selling my car to get the funds to launch the Philo4Thought initiative, someone asked me if I knew my place and purpose. I said, “Yes, it’s right here, in this moment, and in every moment God sets on my path.” I knew back then, even with the world crashing around my ears that I had a duty to take one of my treasured things to keep the momentum of our community moving forward through teaching, mentoring and educational administration In turning in the keys to my little vehicle that day I became a vehicle for progress, building momentum to educate, empower and inspire the next generation, which is precisely what the concept of Promethean Fire represents

As an ancient figure of innovation and compassion, Prometheus bore the happy burden of carrying fire to humanity . From this classic mythological tale to the core stories about our faith and freedom, our community is comprised of disruptors and warriors with the strength and ingenuity to help others thrive

Just as Prometheus handed over the divine fire to humanity, or Jesus blessed His disciples with the Pentecostal Flames to endow them with the tools to complete their missions, mentors are expected to follow this example in passing their knowledge and experience to the next generation, often in an intergenerational fellowship that is integral to the life journeys of all those involved in the teaching-andlearning process

Over the past few weeks we’ve been celebrating the Easter season, which also involves the passing of light, the lighting of the world and, more importantly, of our hearts, minds and souls At this year’s vigil, Father Michalatos of Annunciation Churc h up on 91st Street prayed, “May God be with you and may your light never go out and I don’t mean your candles ” In saying those words the hearts of the entire congregation were steeped in a new Light one that “shines in the darkness ” In that moment, this spiritual mentor magnified the reading of the day : “The true Light that enlightens everyone has come into the world ” (JOHN 1:1-17)

In short, each of us present is the Promethean Fire, the bearer of a divine Light that shines brightly through every deed and even brighter when we stand together to shelter and protect one another in challenging times This is the true meaning of mentorship – something everyone is capable of regardless of where they stand – the investment of time and skills to make the world a vibrant, vital and truly sustainable place for ourselves and those around us

Today’s event focuses on the meaning and impact of mentoring True mentoring is a lasting experience that combines formal training with informal guidance As an institution, Philo4Thought holds fast to the task of empowering today’s young professionals through activities that help them build the skills, resources and network they need to become the future leaders and philanthropists of the world Our satisfaction is to see them thrive, rise and succeed Our mentors, guest speakers and affiliate philanthropists are people of action, outreach, craftsmanship Each bears the mantle of hope, wisdom, passion and life to pass along to the next generation Each is distinguished for their substantial professional and philanthropic contributions to society We are honored and humbled to have their amazing support

With these thoughts and an optimistic vision of the future in mind, the Board and I offer our sincere gratitude to all those who have supported us throughout this challenging year as we emerge from the pandemic stronger and more determined than ever Thank you from the bottom of our hearts Ευχαριστούµε πάρα πολύ!

We hope our attendees will each leave this year’s event with a new and valuable outlook for the future

Without further ado, it’s my pleasure and honor to turn the forum over to one of our major supporters, the Consul General of Greece in New York, Mr Konstantine Konstantinou

Dear All:

On behalf of the Center for Genome Technology & Biomolecular Engineering (CGT-BE), we congratulate Philo4 Thought’s dedicated Executive Board, volunteers and honorees many, past and present, affiliated with Columbia – on the continuation of their fine efforts to provide emerging young professionals with opportunities that will empower them as we continue to work past a variety of challenges

Chris Salboudis has lent her expert administrative and instructional support to our interdisciplinary research group since 2005 while working towards her doctorate at Columbia Teachers College. Her work in educational technology and its applications in diverse learning communities has led to several advancements in collaborative, interdisciplinary educational initiatives including for this year’s international symposium Her determination to form a synergy between students and professionals in every field is truly admirable . She leads this group by example, with constant vigilance.

Through diligent efforts, Philo4 Thought hosted its annual International Symposium at Columbia University from 2015 -2017 , collaborating with prominent faculty, alumni and student groups on campus, including the Columbia Business School, Columbia Hellenic Studies Program and Hellenic Students Association, Women In Science at Columbia, the Columbia Alumni Association and the Columbia Club to support the academic and professional advancement of others

In 2016 , I had the pleasure to provide support their STEM Conference, which led to more robust recruitment of faculty and research experts from top universities and companies speaking and mentoring the young professional community for several years beyond the scheduled event. Since 2022 , Chris took next steps by including committees from Columbia School of Professional Studies, the Penn Club and other prominent organizations in New York and well beyond to support advocacy of scholars and professionals from historically marginalized groups. The 2022 -23 Promethean Fire series, which includes several podcasts as well as events, is impressive.

Chris and the Philo4 Thought team are a constant force of empowerment for others They have done an outstanding job in recruiting the finest international speakers and advisors available today We are so pleased to see that her initiative has expanded since its inception in 2009 and that affiliated groups and partnerships are continually forming as a result of her admirable outreach efforts. We hope this wonderful initiative will continue to thrive and wish Chris as well as her amazing team the best of luck in ongoing efforts to promote collaborative and innovative educational initiatives and networks

Congratulations to all those graduating this year, to those being honored by the New York State Attorney General, the New York State Assembly, the New York City Mayor’s Office, and Philo4 Thought. We also look forward to the upcoming publications mapped out for the upcoming year Best of luck in all future endeavors

Friends:

On behalf of the Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), it is my pleasure to partner with Philo4Thought on its annual symposium.

CEO Christine Salboudis’ vision for a Hellenic Mentoring Initiative should not only be applauded but pursued with vigor As the Greek American community has passed the age of immigration, young professionals in the community are reaching professional heights on a scale not even imagined in previous generations. Like Telemachus before them, these young professionals need their own Mentor, and every Greek American who has achieved success should be prepared to step into that role.

HALC has dedicated itself to identifying and cultivating future civic leaders in the Greek American community – primarily through its Nikos Mouyiaris Leadership 2030 Program sponsored by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation – so we know how impactful organized mentorship initiatives can be.

Congratulations to Christine and Philo4Thought for all that has been achieved to date and I am looking forward to a successful and inspiring 2023 symposium.

Sincerely,

Memory Eternal

Also remembering the amazing mentorship of TMLA & SJU Alumni Prof. Patricia Mary Lucas (1931-2018)

Patricia Lucas was a true teaching icon, teaching Government & Politics to generations of young women at St John’s University and The Mary Louis Academy Patricia was an Alum of both TMLA and SJU, giving back significantly to both communities through her teaching At TMLA (1945-1999), students could agree that she made history come alive – and had lived through enough groundbreaking events to explain them without glancing at the book because the figures resided safely in her incredible heart and mind; moreover, she never left a young lady to fall behind, always watchful and guiding with a kind word to help the young ladies in their formative years At SJU (1949-1999), Patricia also worked to establish the first-ever initiative at SJU to support professional and nontraditional female students – A .W .E . (Advancement of Women in Education); she also contributed significantly to the establishment of the iconic Sun Yat Sen Hall at the heart of the picaresque SJU Queens Campus She will always be known for her intellect, commitment to excellence, kind and giving nature and her ability to empower others
