Music Director of the Philharmonic Winds since 2008, Dr. Leonard Tan has led the orchestra to numerous success and broke new ground through acclaimed performances of works such as John Corigliano’s Symphony No. 3, Circus Maximus, Karel Husa’s Music for Prague, and numerous new commissions. He also champions the works of Singaporean composers with the Philharmonic Winds. Dr. Leonard Tan is Assistant Professor of Music at the National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He earned his Ph.D. in music education from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where his philosophical dissertation, written under the supervision of Estelle Jorgensen, was awarded the “Dean’s Dissertation Prize” for its “exemplary scholarship, brilliant execution and defense.” An internationally-known scholar in music education, he has published prolifically in several major journals, including the Journal of Research in Music Education, Psychology of Music, Philosophy of Music Education Review, Research Studies in Music Education, Music Education Research, Journal of Band Research, Music Educators Journal, UPDATE: Applications of Research in Music Education, Pastoral Care in Education, and Educational Philosophy and Theory. He has contributed to the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series, written encyclopedia entries for SAGE Publications, and has been awarded book contracts by Oxford University Press and Indiana University Press. He is Assistant Book Review Editor of the Philosophy of Music Education Review, serves on the Editorial Committees of Music Educators Journal and International Journal of Music Education, and frequently reviews manuscripts for major music education and philosophy journals. Dr. Tan maintains an active profile as a conductor. He studied conducting with David Effron, Arthur Fagen, and Stephen Pratt in the US, and with Leif Segerstam and Alexander Polischuk in Russia. He has conducted orchestras and wind ensembles across all age groups, from educational to professional ensembles, including the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Singapore National Youth Orchestra, The Philharmonic Winds, the Indiana University Orchestras and Summer Concert Band, several American high school and honor bands, and ensembles in Singapore throughout all age groups. The Straits Times described his performance of Corigliano’s Symphony No. 3 as “masterfully helmed,” while the American press has separately lauded his “artful conducting.” In demand internationally as guest conductor, pedagogue, adjudicator, and scholar, he has presented his research at major international conferences around the world, delivered lectures/ keynotes at the University of Kansas, University of South Florida, Nanjing University of the Arts, and Indiana University, and served as guest clinician at Colorado State University Pueblo, University of Hawaii, and University of the Pacific.

JAY LIM VOCALIST

Currently heading the school as Principal, Jay Lim has been a vocal trainer with Lee Wei Song School of Music with more than 13 years of teaching experience. He specialises in Pop Vocals, having achieved a Grade 8 Distinction in London College of Music Pop Vocals Examinations. He also provides individual training for song writings and productions. A finalist of Singapore Idol 2007 and Singapore Manhunt 2008, Jay uses his stage experience to coach performing techniques and has been working with the finalists of various local singing competitions (such as Impresario, Teenage Idol, Stardust etc.) and many artistes who have come to Lee Wei Song School of Music for customised training programmes (such as 吴佩慈,黄雅莉,盛 煊乔,井伯然,戴阳天,Michelle Chong, Daphne Khoo, Kate Pang and Uriah See). Jay also participated in the Chingay Procession, as a lyricist for the 2014 closing song“网织同 心”,and music producer and performer for the 2015 “We Luv SG” and “PassionArts Singing” contingents. He co-wrote the 2017 Singapore National Day Parade theme song, “Because It’s Singapore” with Mr. Lee Wei Song, producing and performing the song at various National Day celebrations and in Singapore Day 2018 in Melbourne. Jay has made singing appearances in the Esplanade Mosaic Music Festival series in 2009, the 2015 SMU Symphonia 新谣 concert, the Philharmonic Youth Winds concert in 2015, and in various community/charity events.

ESTELLA SIA VOCALIST

Estella is currently the vice-principal of Lee Wei Song School of Music, and the longest serving resident vocal coach with more than 16 years of teaching experience in Pop Vocals and Keyboard. Spotted by Lee Wei Song during an audition, Estella was personally trained by Lee Wei Song in Pop Music Instruction. Her music qualifications include Diploma with Distinction in London College of Music Pop Vocals, Teacher‘s Grade in Yamaha Electone and Fundamentals, Grade 8 Distinction in Trinity College London (Piano), and Grade 8 Distinction in Australia Music Examination Board (Electronic Organ). Estella is familiar with stage performances since the age of 7 and has represented Singapore in Asia Electone Festival 2003. Since 2001, Estella has trained and performed in Lee Wei Song School of Music’s Performing Group and accumulated numerous performing acts in Singapore, Malaysia, China, Japan and Taiwan as soloist/ band performances. Currently a producer/vocalist/keyboardist of local Superband 大风吹,and acoustic group JEEPband, Estella shares her wealth of experience with many budding young talents and has trained local and overseas artistes such as Gentlebones, Daphne Khoo, Felicia Chin, Jesseca Liu, Romeo Tan, 黄雅莉,盛煊乔,Abigail 姚惠珊, Justin Chua, Uriah See and done judging for many local singing competitions such as Impresario, Stardust, NTU Talentime, SP Idol and Channel 8 Sheng Shiong Show Talent Competition. Her backing vocal harmony arrangement and singing works include Taiwan songbird 孟庭苇<剪剪风儿>,Hong Kong’s Gigi Leung <自在> and many local singer artistes such as 林思彤 <向日葵>, Abigail姚惠珊 <如果我不是那种 女生> and many local drama theme songs. To build a platform for all budding talents in LWSSoM, Estella started the LWS Pop Choir since 2010. Under its portfolio, the Pop Choir has performed a musical for our annual school concert. They have also performed for SIA Engineering Company’s National Day Observance Ceremony, and done numerous road show performances at Heartland Mall, Marina Barrage, Heeren, Central @ Clark Quay among many other performances.

KOONG ZHENLIANG VOCALIST

As a performer and local artiste, Zhenliang started off as the lead singer of local band DFC 大风吹 (2008 Singapore Mediacorp Channel U Reality Band competition, Superband, as 1st Runner-Up), having released an EP “DFC大风吹 debut” in 2009. With a flair in song writing, Zhenliang has penned songs and lyrics not only for the band, whose EP “大风吹” was nominated for “Best Indie Production” at FM100.3’s e-Awards in 2010, but also for TV dramas which aired on CCTV China《最初的回忆》 for《行医》, and for regional artistes like Hacken Lee 李克勤, Lee Wei Song 李伟菘, Julie Tan 陈欣 淇, among others. One of his songs《骤变》for the Channel 8 local drama <Sudden> was nominated as one of the best theme songs in 2013 in the Mediacorp Star Awards. He is also the resident judge for The Sheng Siong Singing Competition since 2013 and has judged various local and TV show competition like Impresario and Mediacorp’s Superstar 2014. Zhenliang also has extensive performance experience from doing many local gigs, shows and various Mediacorp programmes in various judging and vocalist roles, from theme songs for drama and to variety shows. Zhenliang has years of experiences in teaching pop singing and has been invited as guest speaker to conduct music talks and various music workshops with MOE and private schools.

Jason has been with Lee Wei Song School of Music for more than 5 years, beginning his training under the tutelage of Jay Lim and has progressed ever since, with 2 years of teaching experience. He specialised in Pop Vocals, having achieved a diploma in London College of Music Pop Vocals examination and Grade 5 music theory. After learning a mixture of English, Mandarin and Korean Pop Vocals, he is using his learning experience to coach different style of singing. He mixes the techniques and uses them as his coaching material. He is also trained to teach the syllabus of London College of Music, Grades 1-8. Jason has served as a judge in the Impresario 2016 auditions, using his experience to analyse every individual performance the competitors performed. He has also performed in various shows such as Compass Award Ceremony 2014, National Jubilee, Impresario Finals and at the Shuffle bar.

LATONIA TAY VOCALIST

Latonia has been with Lee Wei Song School of Music since 2016, and has progressed to being a vocal instructor since 2017. Beginning her training under the tutelage of Estella Sia, she was spotted by Lee Wei Song during one of her lessons to join his very own performing group “LWS Club”, and was personally trained by Lee Wei Song in Pop Music Performance. She has also been trained by Lee Wei Song and Jay Lim in Pop Vocal Teaching. Having been exposed to a wide range of musical influences since young, Latonia is able to perform songs of different genres and languages. Her flair in performing Taiwanese ballads and folk songs has led her to achievements such as 4th runner-up in Aranda Country Club Singing Contest 2015 despite being the youngest contestant, and Finalist of HomeTeamNS JOM Singing Contest 2015. Latonia started performing actively on stage at the age of thirteen. In recent years, she has performed for numerous prominent events such as River HongBao 2017 @ Float at Marina Bay, Chingay 2017 @ Chinatown, and many more. Besides performing regularly as a lead vocalist in several venues, Latonia has served as a live backing vocalist for Hong Kong actor / Cantopop singer, William So (苏永 康), for various events such as “Wat Ananda Metyarama 100 Years Anniversary”, and “劲歌 金曲欢乐夜” in 2018.

RALPH EMMANUEL LIM CLARINET

Ralph Emmanuel Lim is the winner of Singapore Clarinet Festival in 2017 and 2015. He graduated with a Bachelor of Music with Honours from the Royal College of Music, London. In 2015, Ralph received a grant from the National Arts Council, and won the 2nd prize for the Prof. Dichler international competition in Vienna. Other awards include a Distinction from Royal College of Music Woodwind Concerto Competition in London, and finalist at the NAFA Music Essentials Concerto Competition in Singapore 2015. In that same year, he was awarded a scholarship from the International Chamber Music Festival in Norway to study with Martin Frรถst and Herman Stefรกnsson. Ralph freelances for the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, reSound Collective and Singapore Lyric Opera Orchestra. He has also appeared as a Soloist with the Singapore National Youth Orchestra, Philharmonic Winds, and Philharmonic Youth Winds. As an advocate for chamber music, Ralph and his friends founded CLARQuinet, a clarinet ensemble. Together, they have been pushing the limits of the conventional Clarinet ensemble by incorporating different art styles into their performances.

THE PHILHARMONIC WINDS SINGAPORE The word “Philharmonic” translates to a fondness or devotion to music, and The Philharmonic Winds truly embraces that. The members of the wind orchestra came together because of a common love for music, and ever since have endeavoured to present the finest music for wind orchestra to the Singaporean audience. Formed in 2000, The Philharmonic Winds has grown to more than 80 dedicated members. A congregation of skilled musicians from all walks of life – tertiary students to working professionals, music students to wind band instructors – The Philharmonic Winds is proud to be home to a thriving musical community. Amongst a myriad notable performances, The Philharmonic Winds has performed a collection of landmark works from the wind band repertoire, ranging from the symphonies of Paul Hindemith, John Corigliano and James Barnes to well known favourites of Alfred Reed and Adam Gorb. The wind orchestra is also well-versed in a variety of musical styles, having presented the lush melodies of Percy Grainger, the genius of Mozart and Varèse, and jazz standards. The Philharmonic Winds is privileged to have collaborated with renowned musicians from all over the world, including trombonists Jörgen van Rijen (NL) and Ko-ichiro Yamamoto (JPN), saxophonists Kenneth Tse (HK/USA), Shin-ichiro Hikosaka (JPN), Vincent Gnojek (USA), Yasuto Tanaka (JPN) and Masato Kumoi (JPN), marimba soloist Kevin Bobo (USA), the Boston Brass (USA), flutist Marc Grauwels (BEL), euphonium player Kevin Thompson (CAN/MY), trumpeters Yeh Shu-Han (TWN) and Dai Zhonghui (CHN), baritone Maarten Koningsberger (NL), cellist Roeland Duijne (NL), taiko drummer Makoto Tashiro (JPN), as well as pianist Hae-Jung Kim (KR). The

ensemble has also worked with locally-based soloists such as cellist Qin Li-Wei, clarinettist Tang Xiao Ping, yangqin player Qu Jian Qing and saxophonist Fabian Lim. The wind orchestra has performed under the baton of distinguished conductors such as Principal Guest Conductor Timothy Reynish (GBR), Felix Hauswirth (SWE), Douglas Bostock (GBR), Johan de Meij (NL), Luis Serrano Alarcón (ESP), Yasuhide Ito (JPN), Surapol Thanyawibool (THA), John Boyd (USA), Zechariah Goh Toh Chai (SG), Luk Hoi Yui (SG), founding Artistic Director Robert Casteels (BEL/SG) and Music Director Leonard Tan. As one of Singapore’s premier arts flag-bearers, The Philharmonic Winds is proud to have received much recognition on the world stage. In July 2005, The Philharmonic Winds participated in the World Music Contest in Kerkrade, the Netherlands, and became the first and only wind orchestra from Singapore to be awarded a Gold medal with Distinction in the First Division (Harmony Band). The following year, The Philharmonic Winds became the first wind orchestra to perform at the Singapore Arts Festival. In May 2009, the band was invited to Hamamatsu, Japan, to perform at the 40th anniversary of the Japan Band Clinic, one of the most prestigious wind conferences in Japan and around the world. This was followed up with the honour of performing at the 15th World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) Conference in Chiayi, Taiwan, in 2011. In 2013, The Philharmonic Winds returned from a successful tour of Spain, clinching Second Prize at the 127th Certamen Internacional de Bandas de Musica – Ciudad de Valencia (the International Wind Band Contest “City of Valencia”). The Philharmonic Winds was the first Asian wind orchestra to be invited to take part in the contest. In addition, a joint concert was held in Spain with the Symphonic Band Centre

Artistic Musical de Bétera (Symphonic Band CAM Bétera) as well as the Symphonic Band Asociacion Musico-Cultural “La Lira” de Pozuelo. In August 2014, The Philharmonic Winds, together with its youth arm Philharmonic Youth Winds, performed at the closing gala concert of the Hong Kong International Band Fair. Taking their role of cultural diplomacy to a whole new level, The Philharmonic Winds featured the Nontri Orchestra Winds from Thailand as a guest orchestra in 2009 and the Baden-Württemberg Youth Wind Orchestra from Germany in 2012. Both concerts culminated with special performances which saw more than 100 musicians from both nations performing together on stage. An avid supporter of local music, The Philharmonic Winds staged numerous concerts dedicated to works by Singaporean and Singapore-based composers such as Robert Casteels, Zechariah Goh Toh Chai, Ho Chee Kong, Leong Yoon Pin, Phoon Yew Tien, Kelly Tang, Terrence Wong Fei Yang and Wong Kah Chun. In 2010 and 2015, to encourage and develop young local composers, The Philharmonic Winds made open calls for new compositions, from which an international panel of experts selected works to receive their premieres at the “Singapore Compose!” concerts. In 2002, The Philharmonic Winds initiated the Philharmonic Youth Winds, providing an opportunity for young, passionate musicians to further their ensemble experience. In 2008, the young orchestra was crowned the top First Division band at the inaugural Singapore International Band Festival, under the baton of its Resident Conductor Adrian Chiang and with guidance by musicians from The Philharmonic Winds. In 2010 and 2012, Philharmonic Youth Winds emerged amongst the top three bands and attained a Gold medal and a Silver medal in the Open Division of the same festival. The Philharmonic Winds has also initiated other ensembles, such as the Philharmonic Clarinet Choir, Philharmonic Saxophone Ensemble and Philharmonic Brass Quintet. In March 2015, under the guidance of Joost Flach, The Philharmonic Winds introduced the Philharmonic Chamber Winds to explore the vast chamber music repertoire. Besides its regular concert seasons at the Esplanade Concert Hall and overseas performances, The Philharmonic Winds also regularly participates in arts outreach performances and presents free community outreach concerts in the heartlands including Ang Mo Kio, Bedok, Boon Keng, Punggol, Tampines and Yishun, as well as in malls, to reach out to the masses, build new audiences and bring music to more Singaporeans. Working with the National Arts Council, the ensemble performed at several installments of the Concert in the Park series, Arts in Your Neighbourhood series and the Singapore Arts Festival outreach programme. Past engagements also include the Arts In The City series, Beautiful Sunday series at the Esplanade and the Arts For Health programme at the Singapore General Hospital.

In March 2015, The Philharmonic Winds surprised the public with a flash-mob performance at IKEA as part of the Arts In Your Neighbourhood series, and held a Mother’s Day concert at Gardens By The Bay in May 2015. The Philharmonic Winds has also been part of the SPH Gift of Music series by the Singapore Press Holdings, entertaining thousands at various locations. The Philharmonic Winds has collaborated with many local talents from other musical and arts genres, such as stage actors Sebastian Tan and Gani Karim, singers Benjamin Kheng, Charlie Lim, Nathan Hartono, Tay Kewei, Tay Kexin, Sara Wee, George Chan, Lindy Chia and veteran Xinyao singers Hong Shao Xuan and Pan Ying. The wind orchestra has also collaborated with Dingyi Music Company, Ministry of Bellz, Vocal Associates, sand artist Lawrence Koh, young soprano Corey Koh, storyteller Kamini Ramachandran and narrator/actor William Ledbetter. A firm believer of arts education, The Philharmonic Winds has created and developed an original work that introduces wind instruments to students in a fun and interactive way. This commitment has culminated in a tremendously well-received “Fun with Music” concert series, with the latest instalment held in January 2019. Since its inception, The Philharmonic Winds has developed into a mature music institution, and playing a part to better society in more ways other than bringing music and the arts into the lives of Singaporeans. In 2014, The Philharmonic Winds held a concert entitled “Circle of Life – A Night of Musicals” and helped to raise $35,000 for children cared for by the six member charities under The Children’s Charities Association of Singapore. In 2015, The Philharmonic Winds performed at the Yellow Ribbon Prison Run which raised more than $85,000 for the Yellow Ribbon Fund. At the Run, The Philharmonic Winds performed with two inmates, including a special arrangement of a song written by one of them. The Philharmonic Winds is constantly striving to present fresh and exciting quality music to its audiences and aspires to achieve professionalism in all aspects of music-making, with the aim of becoming one of the finest wind orchestras in the region.

PHILHARMONIC YOUTH WINDS Formed in 2002, The Philharmonic Youth Winds was established by The Philharmonic Winds to provide an opportunity for young, passionate musicians from all walks of life to further their musical experience. Besides its regular concert seasons and overseas performances, The Philharmonic Youth Winds also regularly presents outreach concerts in the heartlands and community spaces. The ensemble has done well in competitions. Led by Adrian Chiang, The Philharmonic Youth Winds took part in the inaugural Singapore International Band Festival in 2008, winning the only Gold medal and clinching the title of Top Band in the 1st Division. In both 2010 and 2012, the ensemble emerged as one of the top 3 bands in the Open Division, ahead of groups from regional music conservatories. In 2018, the ensemble once again took part in the 6th Singapore International Band Festival and was awarded the Gold medal. The Philharmonic Youth Winds aims to establish itself as a youthful and vibrant ensemble through its attitude and passion towards music making, and tonightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presentation is a testament to such an effort. Tonightâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s performance also represents its ongoing, active collaboration with local artistes, across different generations, and its endeavour towards musical excellence.
