“Polar are a Guildford five piece who adhere to a life of big beats, strong booze and good times, with influences ranging from Comeback Kid to Cancer Bats”
One of the UK’s most promising Hardcore bands of 2015 have booked two back-to-back weekend dates in a 40 capacity Bournemouth venue in the name of charity – the Friday has already sold out, and the tickets for the Saturday slot are in fresh demand. Polar, reigning from Surrey, have made huge strides in the UK music scene in recent years. They will be cramped up and sweaty in an intimate venue, playing two different sets across the weekend to raise money for the noble cause of Crisis UK – a charity that supports homelessness in the UK. It takes place at Blue Line Studios in Bournemouth on April 8th and April 9th, supported by Southampton prodigies Nebraska on the sold-out 8th and we’re still awaiting the support act on the 9th. The day-one Nebraska supported show sold out in 5 days and co-frontman Ash Emery spoke of his excitement ahead of the show: “I’m excited because not only is it our biggest show support wise but it’s also for a really good cause and we can get all of our friends and fans involved for the most intimate floor show we’ve ever had the pleasure of being a part of.” As we eagerly await the support announcement for day-two, keep tabs on Bournemouth Live on Facebook where you can also get your hands on the limited available tickets. Words by Jacob Granger www.catharsisreviews.com
Welsh Eclectic melodic tech-rock trio The Decoy are set to release their new EP, Parasites. Lifeboat Records are bringing them to The Anvil on the 9th April.
Your debut in Bournemouth is just around the corner... what can we expect from you guys at your show at The Anvil? We’re probably going to get there early, drink some good stuff, find a beach, and hope that the weather is slamming. Then we’ll come and play some music and stuff, probably drink more and encourage even more drinking.
You’ve recently been announced for Y-Not Festival and played on BBC Radio 1 – does it feel like momentum is starting to build ahead of this album we’re looking forward to hearing? Sort of, maybe. It’s hard to say. We’ve just recorded the album, we’re chuffed with it and that’s as far as our minds have stretched really. Y-Not will be banging, but then again every place we play is banging, so it’ll probably
be just as good playing there as anywhere else.
When The Decoy aren’t being three welsh lads with instruments, what do you like to get up to in your spare time? Unregulated use of the word “birth”.
Bournemouth is known for its beautiful beaches and nightlife – what do you expect to take away from your visit? Sand in pockets and
shoes, couple of pint glasses and maybe a Tesco meal deal. We’ll be bringing the Wales to Bournemouth, not taking the Bournemouth out of Bournemouth or something.
Finally, can you give the people of Bournemouth one good reason why they should come down to the show at The Anvil on Saturday 9th April? Nope! They should come if they want to, other than that, the Anvil looks a banging place so maybe go because the Anvil is slamming?
Mike Peters Presents The Alarm - Declare Your Strength Tour 2016 The Old Fire Station Friday 22nd April The Alarm formed in Rhyl, North Wales all the way back in 1981, as punk band The Toilets, changing their name to The Alarm shortly after and embracing the new wave/ alt rock sound they became famous for. Quickly securing opening slots with bands such as U2 and Bob Dylan they cemented their status with their highest charting British single; 1983’s “Sixty Eight Guns”, which reached number 17 in the UK Singles Chart. After a top of the pops appearance and a UK headline tour they headed back to the studio to begin work on their seminal ‘Strength’ album, released in 1985, before heading out on tour again with Bob Dylan. To mark the 30th anniversary of Strength, the entire album has been rearranged and re-recorded by the band’s lead singer and songwriter Mike Peters to create a brand new listening experience. Considered by Peters to be the band’s best album of the 1980s,
the Declare Your Strength Tour 2016 will celebrate this release and a part of The Alarm’s history that was special to so many people. Following on from the hugely successful ‘Strength – 30th Anniversary World Tour’ of 2015 (which racked up over 18 sell out UK shows and 6 sold out nights on Broadway in New York), culminating in what Classic Rock Magazine recently described as “A Career High Concert”, at Wales Millennium Centre. Mike Peters presents The Alarm ‘Spirit Of ’86 in 2016ʹ UK Tour powered by his unique one man band concept that has been rocking venues all over the globe. There is also a new album in the
works and so Alarm fans will also be treated to debut performances of brand new material from a soon to be released Mike Peters and The Alarm album that forms the soundtrack to a compelling 2016 documentary movie ‘Man In The Camo Jacket, which charts the rise of The Alarm alongside Mike Peters inspiring cancer survival story of Love Hope and Strength. Mike Peters still has so much to live for. After twenty years living with cancer his songs of love, hope and strength have taken on greater meaning and the optimism in his words and songs ring ever true. “If a man can’t change the world these days, I still believe a man can change his own destiny”.

BB DIAMOND
thursday 28th april 60 million postcards, bournemouth
BB Diamond made her mark on the industry working as a backing singer for the likes of Jess Glynne, Katy B and Ella Henderson. Now signed to Turn First (home to Ellie Goulding & Rita Ora) she’s set to make a huge impression in 2016. We sent Pip Sickness to have a chat ahead of her Bournemouth show.
I understand your career began as a backing singer for some pretty prolific and well known singers, what prompted the transition to a solo act? Since a young age I have always wanted to be an artist in
my own right & I can honestly say that having the experience I have had with such incredible artists has only confirmed what I’d always set out to do & the realisation that only with hard work, self belief, support & determination can that be achieved
Without getting yourself in to any hot water who would you say was the easiest and who has been the most difficult to work with? Fortunately I have not been in the situation where I’ve had to deal with divas or difficult personalities. As boring as it might sound, the people I’ve worked with have been hugely supportive & encouraging & I’ve learned so much from the experience.
How have you found it being in the spotlight rather than in a supporting role? I’m not sure I’m quite in that spotlight yet, but I’m
definitely trying to work my best towards it. Just being able to have a moment as an artist in my own right is a major achievement.
What’s next for your journey? Do you have any plans on how to expand on your current success? I love songs that define a
moment, or connect people or situations, and I’d love to achieve that through my music. Music is universal and if people get behind it, that’s what will define my future.
If you could pick your ideal line up for the headliners of a uk festival ie; Glastonbury/reading) who would they be and why? How long a list do you want? Here we go...Justin
Timberlake, Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Prince, Missy Elliot, Fleetwood Mac, D’Angelo, Disclosure, Rudimental, Craig David, Nao... & a bit of REM, Sting & Led Zep for my mum!
What do you do outside of music to unwind?
I love exploring new places, Rome was one of my absolute favourites, as was Petra in Jordan, New York will always pull me close - & I’d love to visit more and more places. Other than travelling, being with my family & friends, watching a film (I’m a massive movie buff), catching new acts & generally chilling - which will probably involve too much food!
A lot of media attention recently has been on female singers being pushed by the industry to sexualise themselves more than they are comfortable with, have you had any experience of this issue? If so how have you dealt with it? You’ve got to be true to who you are, or people will soon see through it. I’m lucky enough to be part of a team who believes in me and for independent women & would never push me to do something I’m not comfortable with. My mum is a strong, independent woman who has always taught me the values of equality & we should all have the freedom to express ourselves & be comfortable with who we are.
Bournemouth has a pretty thriving open mic scene full of up and coming solo singers, is there any one in particular you have your eye on from your local scene? It’s amazing that Bournemouth has such a vibrant &
supportive scene & I wish more areas would be like this. I’m always listening to new music, and, because I’m travelling around quite a bit, I get to hear amazing acts all the time. Music connects people, and it doesn’t matter if you’re in a bar or big arena, it provides the soundtrack to that moment in your life.
www.rock-regeneration.co.uk Power Thief return with the follow up to their “Teenage Chaos” EP with four new recordings. These recordings make up the “Down To the Wire” EP, recorded at Active Studios in POWER THIEF Penn Hill Poole. The four guys who formed in 2013 are still not even old enough to buy themselves a pint legally.
Gigs of the Month
Since forming they have played a whole host of gigs March: Gigs of the Month and festivals across the region. They have also bagged Fri 1st Apr 20:00, Mr. Kyps, Poole : The Members + The Electric themselves a support slot with Bruce Foxton’s From the Jam Shakes at the Barrington Theatre in Ferndown in May. The EP opens with “Rundown Town” which provides a great retro-style guitar intro, before George’s considerable vocals come in. “Till Yesterday” has a sort of plodding “Midnight Hour” style beat rolling over and over in the background with the lead guitar adding melody over the top. These guys are quite unusual with the fact that the vast majority of the influences come from bands that were around long before they were even born.
Fri 1st Apr 20:30, Firkin Shed, Bournemouth : Jonny Phillips (Willowen)
Fri 8th Apr 21:00, Square and Compass, Swanage : Red Foot Crow Sat 9th Apr 19:30, Anvil, Bournemouth : The Decoy + Krooked Nation + Endea + Novum Wed 13th Apr 18:00, Cliffhanger Cafe, Highcliffe : We Are Robot Fri 15th Apr 19:30, Anvil, Bournemouth : Tuskens + Buffalo Go + City Bound + For The Best
Fri 15th Apr 22:00, Smokin’ Aces, Bournemouth : Tom They admire acts such as The Kinks, The Beatles and Dr Feelgood, with their styles being a big part of Power Thief’s Clements musical style. Sat 16th Apr 21:00, Chaplins Cellar Bar, Boscombe : Black Water County
The band know exactly how they want to sound and have kept along the same path ever since they started. “She’s in Love” gives us a catchy chorus rolling the words “She ís in Love, She ís in Love with herself” over and over. “Inner Fire” is the most powerful track of the four and shows yet greater guitar work and some good solid songwriting.
Thu 21st Apr 21:00, Chaplins Cellar Bar, Boscombe : Flying Shoe + The Cool Grey 4 Fri 22nd Apr 19:30, Tivoli Theatre, Wimborne : Jah Wobble’s Invaders of The Heart
Sun 24th Apr 12:00, Upton Country Park, Poole : The Folkish Fest: Featuring : Tankus the Henge + Richard Digance + Harpin’ On + Casual Attire + Ben Cipolla + James King + There is a great naivety and inexperience about these songs, Chaiani Riberio
a youthful awakening that can never be repeated as they get older. It is always a great thing to discover a new band and see how they progress and these guys are doing very well so far.
