Teddy Rocks Festival started with a small gig in 2011 to raise money for Teddy20, a children’s cancer charity founded by Tom Newton and his family after he lost his 10 year old brother Ted to a very rare bone cancer. This April, they prepare for their seventh festival. We caught up with Tom to learn more and see how he’s dealing with the preperations for this years event. Teddy Rocks has shown phenomenal growth since its beginning in 2011, was this something that was always planned? Absolutely not! It is truly terrifying and I am desperately running behind it trying to keep up. It all started with a comment I made to a friend ‘We should put a gig on at the pub that would be a laugh’ 5 festivals and £100,000 later I am blown away. Music for a lot of people is an escape when things go wrong, losing Ted hurt like hell, and putting on that small show and raising £400 lit a spark in me and the healing process began.
aspects are the most time consuming, we had to create a 60 page event safety management guide with 10 appendix’s of information from traffic management guides to noise management plans. It has been one hell of a steep learning curve! But Teddy Rocks has the most incredible team of people behind it.
How have you adapted to the level of organisation that is required by something the size of 2017s event, and how has your team grown during the process? It hasn’t been easy that is for sure. I have had to adapt my working life around it to ensure I can give 30 hours + a week to try my best to make the event happen. I have some very understanding employers. The licensing
I am truly blessed to have so many people on board who share my passion for the event and the cause. They are the true back bone of the event and without them I wouldn’t even get close to putting this show on.
We now have a safety consultant, Traffic manager, Sound monitor, Technical manager, Pr Manager, Digital marketing manager, Trade Manager, promoters, security and medical managers and an in house art team.
Teddy20 is the charity you guys set up, and so far you have raised an amazing £90,000 to help fight children’s cancer, did you have an
original goal when you started fundraising and has it changed over the time you’ve been active? As a charity we have actually raised £250,000 and the festival is responsible for £100,000 of that. It has blown us away that is for sure. My first goal was to put a gig on that people came too and to raise maybe £100? So yeah.. pretty speechless still about the whole thing, The money you have raised for this incredible cause speaks for itself, what have been the other highlights of running this event? I really enjoy picking the line up and rewarding really hard working bands who maybe get over looked by some bigger festivals by giving them the chance to play with some bigger names. Especially the younger local bands for sure. To see how passionate and excited they get to play my festival is just incredible. I used to have to absolutely beg bands to play now I get over 500 ask for a slot. But aside from that I love seeing the community come together and celebrate each night at the festival when we announce the total. People genuinely feel part of something special and like they are doing their bit. To think that some children’s lives actually get improved just that little bit, and all as a bi product of a music festival... I mean that’s pretty cool right? Which acts are you most excited to watch play this year? I am really excited for Twin Atlantic. That’s a big one for me for sure. But also my good friends in Patent Pending.
Those boys are from New York so its great that we managed to fit in their touring schedule whilst they are over. If you could book whoever you wanted, what would your dream line up be for 2018s Teddy Rocks? Anyone who knows me will see this coming a mile off... but hands down A Day To Remember, New Found Glory, Simple Plan and maybe Taking Back Sunday. And as it’s a dream, the original Funeral For A Friend line up would be insane. But with us being such a tiny festival, finance and the bigger festivals squash that dream haha! How has this project changed your life? It has helped me try to process losing my brother. Something I will never be fully at peace with but for sure its made it a lot easier seeing his name helping so many children and families. I feel like it wasn’t all for nothing if you get me? He was the best, and I feel like part of him lives on with this gig. What’s next for both the festival and the charity, and how can our readers get involved in this great cause? For the festival it’s simple... survive another year! We cover all of our costs through sponsorship from amazing companies and people like Checkatrade, The Greyhound in Blandford, Hall and Woodhouse and the amazing team at Vocalzone. If you are reading this and would like to financially make it possible for us to exist, I am dying to hear from you! More importantly if you are reading this please come along this year by grabbing your tickets and support what we do. As a charity we are continuing to provide financial and emotional support to children fighting Cancer and have just re opened for the Year ‘Ted’s Shack’, a holiday home down in Weymouth which we purchased to send children and their families going through treatment away for short much needed respite breaks. This is our main project and it is absolutely crucial we keep raising money to keep it open. We have a few other big ideas too! But lets see how this years festival goes.

Formed in 1985 by former Sisters Of Mercy members Wayne Hussey and Craig Adams, The Mission emerged as a major charting gothic pop phenomenon in the late ‘80s. Their debut album God’s Own Medicine spawned several hits including Stay With Me and Wasteland. Now reformed with the original lineup, The Mission continue to tour around the world to an ever loyal fanbase.
PLAYING WEDS 17TH MAY O2 ACADEMY BOURNEMOUTH
The Mission are one of the iconic acts from the late 80s Goth Rock scene. Your fashion inspired many, are you still rocking the look? There are some that do dress identically to how they did in the 80’s but we have preferred to change, as has our music, as we’ve accumulated more years. We still look dead cool, though, cool as fuck.
Your album covers often feature some kind of cool iconography, who creates the designs and what inspires them? In the early days our artwork was based on illustrations by Sandy Ball, who was our drummer, Mick Brown, girlfriend at the time. Mick did oversee the first few releases but then we went corporate for a while and employed art people recommended to us by the record company. Then we got bored with that and since the early 90’s we’ve kind of done the artwork in-house with Wayne’s wife, Cinthya, doing it for a few releases. The last few releases have been done by Andy Luckhurst, a friend of the band, with input and direction from Wayne.

You guys have witnessed the rise of the internet during your career, its impact on the music industry cannot be denied. Do you feel it has changed the industry for the better and how have you had to adapt to these changes? In many respects the internet has really opened the music industry up and levelled the playing field. Anyone with access to the internet can get their music out there without having to beg cap in hand to the big record companies. by Harry D-Tox This month for the Box Fulla Records Sub:Section I hooked up with Andre, the promoter of Bournemouth based Vibez Events to talk about how it started, what he been up too and what his plans are for the future. First question, can you tell us how the Vibez Events first started and what was the original concept behind it? Originally it was a simple concept, some dnb, dubstep, in the form of local dj’s and friends in a club and wicked Vibez. The DODAB Collective & The Dub Smuglaz were the original residents and crews which set the foundations and early forms of what we now call Vibez. Vibez was originally an event focused around up & coming artists but you have gone on to host a whole heap of heavyweight headliners over the 6 years. Can you tell us a bit about that? Our MAIN focus and ethos is still to provide a place and audience for the local and upcoming talent. Its no secret that we have booked Headlining acts on more than one occasion. Sometimes it’s really hard not to get sucked into wanting to book an Artist for your own guilty pleasure and off course for all the supporters. Most people would consider Vibez events being local to Bournemouth, but I remember playing at a Vibez event in Soton or somewhere back in 2012 and you’ve taken the brand over to Trident festival in Slovakia for the last 3 years in a row. We did a few events across the south, mainly to test the waters back then, get the brand out a little and recruit some hidden talent. Road trips are fun, a must when possible. We met some great people and have established some long-term friendships. A close friend of my fiancé’s runs Trident Festival in Slovakia, she introduced me to the promoter back when I met her and one thing lead to another. The whole crew was taken over to Slovakia on several occasions for our takeover showcase. We will give it a miss this year though, travelling isn’t on the tables with a newborn baby. Not yet.

So, you’ve had a break from running monthly events, with your April 28th event being the first since the Xmas Skank Out event. What have you been up to? That’s right, we took a 3 month break, my daughter Maya was born in late November and i wanted to take off the first few months of 2017 from promoting events so I could fully focus on being a new father. This also allowed for me to take a step back and observe the local scene. Ok to finish off our chat, what are your plans for the April event and the future? We are back at The Winchester on the Friday 28th April, this time we have a Dubstep headliner DJ amongst some the finest local talent, HATCHA is doing a 15 Years of Dubstep Set, excited for the 90min set, a pioneer of the genre at a Vibez. You can also catch some of the crew at On The Bus Festival on the 9-11th June & The Block Party on the 6th May. Expect Vibez with allot more than just Drum & Bass… We’re Bringing some of the old flame back in. Local artists get in touch with your demos.

PREVIEWS METAL 2 THE MASSES
The battle for Bloodstock begins
The top unsigned metal bands from all around the UK will be duking it out this summer to earn themselves a slot at the UK’s best metal festival; Bloodstock Open Air. This is no normal battle of the bands as not only is the prize awesome, having catapulted the likes of Evil Scarecrow and 12 Boar (among others) onto the bigger touring circuit, but the level of comradery between bands creates a unique atmosphere that unifies the metal under one banner: good music!
