Don’t be an April fool, plenty to see and do! Indie darlings of Bournemouth, Air Traffic, found themselves shooting up the charts in 2008. As the 10 year anniversary of their debut album approaches, we sit down with the band ahead of their homecoming show at The Old Fire Station. Bournemouth Emerging Arts Festival is back and we take a look at what this years festivities have in store, in particular headliners Midnight Choir, born from the ashes of latino-ska band Pachango! Back In Bournemouth

In 2007 Air Traffic stamped Bournemouth on the indie map signing to major label EMI and getting the backing of Radio 1’s Zane Lowe. “Charlotte”, “Shooting Star” and “No More Running” all peaked in the UK top 50 charts, and with an arena tour with Snow Patrol under their belts we all spent our summer singing their sun soaked pop. 10 years later they teased fans with a ‘South Coast announcement’ which became this months homecoming gig.

Dorset Music’s James Wadsworth grabbed the opportunity to reminisce with Air Traffic bassist Jim Maddock, as well as talking about the gig and new single.

recording and releasing this album was such a huge part of our lives, that we knew we had to celebrate the occasion. We knew it would mean so much for the fans that have grown up with that album and still listen to it, to hear it performed live again. The moments before our first show back were surprisingly calm. We were probably more relaxed and prepared than we’ve ever felt before. I guess that’s something that comes with age! With 3 of 4 members being from Bournemouth; what does it mean to be coming back to your hometown for the Old Firestation Show?

Actually, I think all four of us grew up around Last year you played your first shows in 8 years. the area! I’m really glad to hear there’s so many exciting bands coming out of Bournemouth. I think one of the most important things we did when starting out was reaching out to promoters in other towns to secure as many shows and performances as we could. This improved us as a live band, got our name out there, got people talking about us, and most importantly gave us some amazing experiences and memories.

As a band featuring a prominent keyboard sound, when recording Fractured Life in Rockfield Studios how did it feel to record in the same space as Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody was recorded ( and did you get to play ‘that’ piano?)

We stayed at Rockfield Studios for six weeks to record our album. This month for the Box Fulla Records Sub:Section, we chat to Aaron Holmes and Kane Edwards. Two forward thinking Bournemouth based DJs, promoters, head chefs and driving force behind Space Cakes, a versatile recipe that rises high above the level of other events, mixing multiple music genres with visual arts. We talk about the concept and marketing behind the brand, Space Cakes DJ sets and much more… Let’s start with how you guys first met and can you tell us a bit about your individual creative backgrounds? Aaron: Hey Harry, thanks for having us! I couldn’t tell you how we first met sadly, although Bournemouth’s got quite a small network of similar minded heads so we were always at the same events/after parties when we were younger. It wasn’t until 6+ years down the line that we started Space Cakes. I’ve never been a particularly academic person when it came to school/college, the only subjects I was good at were creative subjects like art, graphics, drama etc. so it wasn’t until I snuck into a club at 16 and stood in front of a real sound system that I realised just what I wanted to do. Kane: Yeah, basically our love for the music brought our paths together, and like Aaron said we would always end up back at the same after parties where we both then started to talk about music. I first started taking an interest in music from a really young age. I had quite a lot of music played around me as a child growing up, from Reggae to Punk; both my parents were quite into their music, but both very different in taste.

On your live art pieces you work with the talented Kellyman. How did this relationship come about and have you worked with any other artists from Bournemouth’s thriving arts scene? Aaron: Yes yes. Shout outs to Jack! He spray painted a handful of boards for us at our first few events. We’ve always had the idea that art should play as big as role as the music at our events, although we could never incorporate it to a degree that we were both happy with due to our budget. It was always one or the other, and being primarily a club night, the music would come first. This is something we’re working on though, and as the saying goes, good things come to those that wait. Kane: We both used to regularly go to an event called ’Secret Walls’, which used to be at The Winchester, and I suppose from attending that event I got to know Kellyman, as well as a few more talented Bournemouth artists. It’s quite funny you mentioned that question actually ever since starting up our brand I’ve been consciously looking at more artists than I did before. At the moment I’m speaking with an Australian artist who’s just designed us something that I’m looking forward to bring out for this summer. It’s hard to pin you down to a specific music genre, from House Techno to Garage Jungle, you guys have hosted the lot, always keeping it fresh and exciting whilst bringing debut headliners to town. You both must have varied musical tastes, how would you describe the Space Cakes sound?

Aaron: Haha, my music taste gets weirder and weirder by the day. I think to the public we’re more known for playing 120/130bpm techno, So when did you two launch Space Cakes and ukg and bass orientated stuff, but our tastes go so far beyond this. I feel radio would be the what was the original concept behind it? place where people can get a real feel for what we’re about. It’s somewhere we can take big risks Aaron: We had our first party back in April musically. We don’t have a “signature sound”, so 2016, and we threw our second birthday party expect the unexpected if you come watch us. the other day, so we’re still pretty young. Our original idea was to just have fun and try to create something special for other people as well as ourselves. Kane: The idea was simple to be quite honest, basically just two friends that wanted to throw parties with DJ’s that we wanted to bring down to our hometown. Space Cakes has always had strong branding, with its distinct logo, stand out silver shiny stickers (found everywhere from here to east London and beyond), artistic photography and art-piece flyers.

Kane: Same again really, I tend to listen to different music on a daily basis. Like Aaron mentioned recently for our bookings we’ve been playing more bass driven tracks around the 120130 bench mark. We’ve always tried to have a varied selection throughout our sets so we’re not just playing a whole hour of the same genre. Being so versatile with the music that you host has opened up doors to a whole array of other unusual venues normally out of reach for most promoters. Was that a deliberate move or did it organically happen? Aaron: It was very much an organic thing, we would only ever use one venue in our town, (a 220 capacity pub called The Winchester) due to the community that went along with it. Sadly, this venue was forced to close, and what was an incredible hub for creatives turned into an up market cocktail bar. We would always be on the hunt for unique spaces, most clubs down here don’t quite cut it for us, and we liked to do things differently. We had this sick Halloween party planned in 2016, where the event space was in the middle of a busy roundabout/subway; however the council made us pull the event the day before, after giving us approval months prior. Then we got lucky in 2017 and managed to somehow blag an event in Bournemouth Gardens. Anyone who has run events here will know what our council is like in regards to events; it’s a bit of a nightmare. Kane: That’s the sad reality we face in Bournemouth at the minute, due to so many closures its nightlife has taken a massive blow and has given this town only a handful of venues for promoters to work with. We’ve always been hopeful of trying new things when it comes to doing something outside the box so to speak, and when we were given the opportunity to try something in Bournemouth gardens we jumped at the chance to try something that hadn’t been done before. You both play a lot of DJ sets out. What could someone who has never witnessed one of your sets expect? Aaron: A mental rollercoaster of happiness, sadness and wanting to slap your best mate in the face mid dance cos that track you heard was so f**kin’ naughty. I occasionally like to play the odd weird/obscure track to clear the haters from the dance floor too, so be prepared for them. Oh and always pack your bananas man, we go in hard at times. Kane: Yeah, if you’ve just come for bassline and dnb then don’t come till later on (haha). Basically, we just both play tunes that we really like with the odd track you can sing along to in there (guilty) but generally we just go with the flow in our sets and 90% of the time it works I’d say. I noticed Space Cakes played at Bestival last year. Have you got any festivals planned for this year and what other bookings can you tell us about? Aaron: We never played at the actual festival, although they threw a local party and contacted

us to play for them, they’ve also asked us to play again at something this year but we’re not really allowed to talk about that yet. We’ve talked about the Space Cakes events and DJ performances but I wanted to briefly touch on Artifice Music. I guess this question would be aimed more at Kane as he is cofounder of the record label but can you please tell us a bit about the label and type of music it releases? Kane: I started Artifice a few years back now with a friend of mine, Jamie Scott, who I used to go to school with, and who then later went to work for a massive distribution company in music. He decided to start his own distribution company so that’s were Artifice grew from I suppose. We both met up for a pint one day, and got talking about music, as I normally do with most people. I just said to him there’s all these artists I talk to from Bristol/London/Manchester and they all keep sending me their dubs to listen to and play out! We got more and more p!ssed as the night went on, and just said we’re going to get all the best tracks I had, if they hadn’t been signed yet, and start the label together. Within 6 weeks, I think, the label was putting out music on all major platforms. Finally thanks again for taking the time to talk to us. COULD YOU BE A FOLK ORC?

I’m Nigel - an inveterate folk musician with feet firmly planted in English traditional tunes. I play fiddle and guitar - mainly by ear and am determined to learn to read music properly ... one day. In association with Lee Cuff, Chris Hopgood and Folk Orc, we’re setting up an acoustic folk band in Bournemouth - mainly for English trad tunes, but I’m quite sure there’ll be a bit of other stuff creeping in from time to time. The idea is to have a bunch of 10 to 15 musicians getting together regularly to play through a few well-known session tunes, learn a few new ones and have fun. Lots of room for personal expression and improvisation. The sessions will be led by accomplished cellist and fiddle player Lee Cuff (of the band Kadia).

We moved to Bournemouth last year and I was having a moan that there didn’t seem to be a lot of tune sessions going on. ‘Start one yourself,’ says my friend. So that’s what I did. Luckily I met Lee Cuff and Chris Hopgood who have been very supportive in getting the project off the ground. We’ll meet for practice sessions twice monthly (2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings of each month) in Westbourne. There will be a charge of £5 per person to cover the costs of the hire of the church hall andrefreshments. So we’re looking for musicians who might be tempted to try – any acoustic instruments welcome.

So how did the project start? I’ve been playing guitar in sessions in Lewes, Brighton and Worthing for the last few years. Eventually, I got fed up with‘comping’ and decided that I had to learn TUNES BAND a melody instrument. I chose the fiddle – and started learning about. 3 years ago. Since then I go to workshops and festivals wherever possible and the work in progress continues. Luckily there’s no such thing as a wrong note in folk tunes. We’re looking for instrumentalists for our new acoustic folk band – mainly trad English tunes with lots of room for personal style and improvisation. Fiddle, guitar, mandolin, banjo, flute, clarinet, cello, nyckelharpa, boxes, etc., all welcome! Practice session twice a month led by the charismatic cellist Lee Cuff – weekday evenings in Westbourne. £5 per person (including refreshments).
