The competition closes on Sunday 14th August at 11.59pm, giving eight lucky bands the opportunity to win a 20 minute opening slot on their local date, with full branded Fireball backline provided for the gig on their behalf. The winners will be judged and selected by a panel of music industry experts, journalists and the bands from the tour. Full terms and conditions can be found on the website. To enter, simply head to: academymusicgroup.com/fireballcompetition
and fill in the entry form fields, telling us why your band should open the tour in your city. Fireball UK Brand Manager James Pattison: “We are delighted to offer the opportunity to open our inaugural ‘Fireball - Fuelling The Fire’ tour shows to up and coming, independent, grass-roots British bands at each of our 8 shows this October. The Mistakes have been making a name for themselves around the South the last few years as one of the areas must see punk bands. They blend the catchy 77 punk sound with influence from some newer Hellcat records stuff. A unique live act, their gigs normally entail savagely ripping into each other in between songs and other general silliness, but when the music starts it’s all business. Catch them supporting punk legends UK SUBS at Mr Kyps on 12th November, and at the Bournemouth Punx Picnic at The Anvil , September 23/24
Who are you and what do you do in the band? Hi! I’m Shane, I play guitar and write some of the songs. The good ones. How did you first get together? The original line up were all part of different punk bands from around our local scene. We all used to play at and go to gigs at Mr Smiths in Bournemouth. Shane and original drummer Alastair Fyffe were part of Dislocated Youth, Ross was part of Red Sandstone alongside bassist at the time James Rundle and Mikey Whiteside (guitar) was a friend of all and was the one who actually got us together for our first practises. Who are your biggest influences? Our biggest influences are always going to be the bands that we grew up with I suppose. It never really changes does it? We are all influenced by 90’spunk/ skate punk, 70’s punk, metal, rock n roll. Rancid, Nofx, The Offspring, Anti-Flag, The Clash,The UK SUBS, Motorhead etc. Plastic Parrot did a review of us once and said that we were a mix of a bunch of great bands and then said that Ross was
a modern day Joe Strummer. He hasn’t shut up about it since. How would you describe your music to someone that has never heard it before? FANTASTIC! But I suppose I would say that. If I had to use actual words though, I ‘d say it’s hard, honest and fast. We try to take everything that we like about punk rock music and just make more of it! It’s 2015 (Or when this goes to print I’d think) so we aren’t into rehashing 1970’s punk. We play punk, no doubt, but this the sound of punk today. You’ve just released an EP, how did that go? This seems like an ideal time for a plug!! Really well thanks It’s out now on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and all the other download sites through Jumpstart Records. You can also buy direct from us through the website www.themistakes.co.uk or through www. facebook.com/the-mistakes-uk ! The release was great, we have been on a few radio stations (Dying Scene, Forest FM etc) and had some great reviews. On a local level Ross A. Ferone from Rock Regeneration has been especially supportive and we appreciate that a bunch. What’s the best thing about being a Mistake? EVERYTHING.

“Where they found the energy from I do not know! Stunning performances from all of the band and the best drum solo I’ve ever seen! “ Canvas opened last November in Bournemouth on Poole Hill. An area historically linked with music venues, from Mr Smiths to The Winchester, we caught up with The Triangles newest club owner. What’s your background and what inspired you to open Canvas? I started my working life, part time in a pub in Wimborne at the age of 15 and have worked in or around the licensed trade ever since! From a 15 year old kitchen assistant through the kitchen ranks to nightclub security during my Uni years then on to management, marketing and operations roles. Opening my own bar was never a dream but certainly a challenge! The former owners at 45 Poole Hill had created a fantastic space and fancied my chances in doing something a little different in my home town. How would you describe the venue? A unique space over two floors You’ve had some pretty huge names perform at Canvas in the past 8 months, what’s been your favourite moment so far? Wow, tough call. For me personally Lonnie Liston Smith and his wonderful band who played here back in June. It was a Sunday night after a particularly busy weekend and my expectations were what can only be described as low after picking the band up after a 10 hour train journey down from Hoochie Coochie in Newcastle. Where they found the energy from I do not know! Stunning performances from all of the band and the best drum solo I’ve ever seen! A close second was Mica Paris who really connected with the crowd. She’s already looking forward to coming back early next year. Having been through the stress of opening your own place. What advice would you give to anyone else who has considered doing the same? Don’t do it! What do you find the most challenging aspect of providing a space for live music in Bournemouth? It’s a challenging town to provide for in a lot of respects. The footfall is heavily focused around weekends and there isn’t a hugely diverse music scene. Until recently there was a feeling that you had to travel to London or Brighton. You have to
remember that we are still a small conurbation with a lot of outdoors options to pursue. Your back bar provides some of the widest choice in Bournemouth, how do you select your drinks? I am lucky to have the support of a great team behind me. Ben Piercy my GM oversees all things bar related. Half the struggle with Ben is to stop the back bar selection growing any more. Next time you are in ask for his advice on say gin and you will see what I mean! The triangle has become one of the towns fastest growing areas. Is there anywhere that you like to grab a drink, bit to eat or watch some music when your not at work? As a creature of habit Ojo Rojo is awesome for a light bite and a beer. Koh for the best Thai in town and the Canvas team are also partial to a decent beer at the Goat & Tricycle which is an off the radar spot and often overlooked. What do you look for in a live band, what catches your ear? A good tight band that you know are going to connect with the audience and deliver value for money to the paying customer. Have you come across any new music you’d recommend we take a listen to? I’m currently listening to ex Incognito star Tony Momrelle, who recently supported Earth, Wind & Fire at the Pavillion. He’s heading down to Canvas in November for what will be an awesome live up close and personal style gig. What can we expect from Canvas looking towards the future? If you thought 2016 was fun wait until 2017. We’ve certainly been noticed by some movers and shakers in the industry and have some great artists in the pipeline. Interesting hook ups with Red Bull Music Academy, Wave 105 and Jack Daniels are also coming to light in 2017.
www.rock-regeneration.co.uk Philip John is one of those artists that you see for the first time and never forget. He has an amazing knack of stopping Jo Carley and the Old Dry Skulls people in their tracks the moment he starts singing. His voice is powerful and has a huge range the can handle just about any Gigs of the Month style of music. Until recently he could be found playing bass in a band, keeping his voice somewhat under wraps. After a few solo gigs recently the locals around Bournemouth began to talk have you heard that’s guy’s voice, it’s like nothing I’ve ever heard? After checking him out live a couple of times I can confirm that all the rumours are true and yes, he is as good as the gossips say he is. His new EP opens with the epic Only Follow which starts off gently with a nice tuneful acoustic guitar piece, before delivering a chorus exceeding expectations. For All My Sins is more of the same with a more melodic guitar style and it really achieves a raw live feel Hosts arrives with some nicely executed delay on the acoustic guitar and shows that Philip is no one trick pony.

This all round package includes some clever songwriting that can easily be interpreted in many different ways. Give Me War keeps up the high momentum with a thought-provoking tune that continues with lots of great ingredients. The best is most certainly saved to last with a tune called Russian Dolls that sees the full extent of Philip’s voice unleashed. The infectious number with a huge chorus just keeps giving and giving right until the end. I insist though that to get the full effect of this young man’s capabilities you must go along and see him live.
