TO THE BEST MUSIC
IN THE COUNTY!
This month Dorset Music dives headfirst into an interview with one of the counties most well established DJ duos, Dafu & Cursa. Since teaming up in 2012 they’ve gone on to support some of the biggest names around, whilst building a solid following of their own. Over the past 49 years, The Great Dorset Steam Fair has developed into one of the worlds largest cultural and heritage fairs. This August we take a look at this long standing staple of the Dorset calendar.
DUO
The Electric Shakes are arguably one of the most successful acts to come out of the area in recent years. They’ve got a solid touring schedule out of town and have a track being featured on a Classic Rock cover CD later this year. The band give us some insight to life on the circuit.

The Formidable Duo... Thrown together as part of the Ghetto Jam crew, Dafu & DJ Cursa have gone on to rock the turntables in many of Bournemouth’s finest venues. Over the last few years the Duo have been popping up on regular events including ‘Secret Walls’, ‘After Dark’, ‘Ghetto Funk’ and ‘Break It Down’. Along the way managing to share the turntables supporting such acts as The Nextmen, Chali 2na & Krafty Kuts, DJ Format, The Herbaliser, DJ Suspect, Grandmaster Flash, JFB, Chinese Man, Craig Charles, Mark Rae, The Allergies, Lack of Afro, The Four Owls, Mr Doris, Mouse Outfit, DJ Yoda and Peanut Butter Wolf… amongst others!! No one can disagree with their pedigree.
I understand you’ve been playing together since around 2012, becoming mainstays of the Bournemouth nightlife scene in the process, how did Dafu and Cursa Back2Back come about?
Cursa: We met DJ’ing on a night called ‘Ghetto Jam’ with our boys BubaKing and Cockney Nutjob, first at Dusk till Dawn (rip) then moving to The Winchester (rip). But being asked to play Oxjam separately at Smokin’ Aces was the kick-off for our Back 2 Back nights. I guess our sets complimented each other and the manager asked us back to do a night together. We’ve been residents since, playing the second Saturday of the month. Dafu: I started out back in the day under the name FuManStu, had a break and came back as Dafu. I’ve been in and around Bournemouth for a few years now, but as my man said, the Back 2 Back vibe was born out of Ghetto Jam, and we have been DJing as The Formidable Duo ever since, on numerous events, nights, festivals, and support slots And, as well as ‘Aces, we are residents at The Four Horsemen as well.
You must have seen a fair few bars and clubs come and go since you started DJing, what do you think makes for a successful venue? Cursa: Quality staff on the door is always a good start! A bar that isn’t afraid to try new things and give people a chance to prove themselves. We’ve been blessed in this town and worked with most of the best bars. Dafu: We have seen quite a shift around in venues over the years! But, personally speaking as long as the basics are in place, half decent equipment and sound, decent staff and attitude, and just create a positive vibe… the rest should just fall into place.
Mostly you guys can be seen playing the more
‘alternative’ side of Bournemouth, is this a conscious decision?
Cursa: I think we sit comfortably in the alternative scene. Our choice of music is always on the funky side no matter if it’s Hip Hop, Rock, Soul, Breaks… and don’t limit ourselves to playing just one genre. With that I guess it’s hard to put us into a particular category. Whatever we play it’s done in a ‘Hip Hop’ style with skills, but that doesn’t mean we’re just ‘Hip Hop DJ’s’! So it isn’t unusual to see us on the same bill as say ‘DJ Format’ or a band like ‘Selby and the Dharma Blitz’. Plus the alternative scene in Bournemouth is awesome… Who wouldn’t consciously want to be a part of it! Dafu: We are happy to play to any crowd, mostly because we are so eclectic with our choices of tunes, we tend to tick a lot of boxes… but you gotta love the alternative side, we have been lucky enough to make a ton of friends and collaborators at the alternative events.
Have you gone into the more mainstream clubs and if so how was the experience compared with your normal haunts?
Cursa: The only mainstream club we’ve played around here was supporting Grandmaster Flash at the O2 Academy, which was a great honour. With that event and venue it’s more of a concert, so people really watched you rather than just focusing on their dance moves! With smaller bars and clubs the night can become more intimate and messy, you feel you’re much more part of the crowd than just the one supplying the music. Dafu: We have been lucky to support some big names, and they tend to play at the more mainstream venues, but we approach every gig with the same attitude, big or small venue. In the smaller, more intimate gigs, it’s always nice to see the reaction of the crowd when we do our thing.
You play a lot of gigs! How do you keep your sets fresh for those that come to see you multiple times in a month?
Cursa: We try to keep our ears to the ground for new music. There’s also an amazing amount of good music coming out on 7inch only that suits our tastes perfectly, which helps! Dafu: And the constant switch up of genres keeps people on their toes. I do go out digging in the local record shops too, always seeking out new ‘old’ gems.
On the same topic, not every gig can be a banger, how do you keep your head up during the dead ones and do you have any stories of nights gone wrong to share with us? Cursa: A slow night can be very hard, but thankfully we’ve got each other for company! Dafu: Not to sound like ‘that guy’ but I can’t recall any gigs that have been that bad. Some nights are quieter than others, but there is a lot going on in Bournemouth, all the time. On the quieter nights, i tear it up as much as busy nights, and when i’m not on, Cursa is… and its always killer.
I’m sure you’ve seen a lot of changes in both the music and club scenes since you started out, can you think of any significant ones off hand and how have they affected you?
Cursa: Technology has certainly changed the DJ scene. Serato and control vinyl kept things alive for me when the slump in vinyl production happened. But that has a negative effect also… It’s harder to bounce back from a laptop crashing than a skipping record! Dafu: Saturation effects everyone, we’re no different… but we always meet up, jam, work on new bits, try and offer something unique, especially when we play the 45s. On the DJ side of things, i’ve seen a lot of technology come in, but i just remained strictly vinyl, and did my thing.
Any tips to aspiring DJ’s just starting out? Cursa: Be yourself, don’t focus on the latest trends in music and play what makes you happy! As mentioned above, on slow night it might just be you listening! Dafu: Do it for the passion of music, and DJ culture… we want to see the love!
What’s in store for the rest of 2017 for Dafu and Cursa?
Cursa:We have our regular nights at The Four Horsemen (5th August & 2nd September) and Smokin’ Aces (12th August & 9th September) to look forward to, plus a few (big) un-announced gigs soon to be revealed! Dafu:We have some big gigs coming up later in the year, on some amazing bills, in and out of town. We also are a part of a crew called CULT.45, along with fellow 45 spinner Deejay Leeroy, so will be looking to promote that as well. Best bet is to look at our website www.dafu-djcursa.co.uk and follow us on Facebook. Photos by Shinobi Pictures

Featured on the cover CD of this months Classic Rock magazine, The Electric Shakes from Bournemouth are making all the right noise in all the right places. With an impressive number of shows lined up across the country, we caught up with the band described as “Brit Fuzzbusters” by Classic Rock. You guys have got a busy looking summer ahead! Is this a conscious effort of productivity or are you just going with the flow? Well we recorded our first full length album early this year so we decided to try and book some shows to try and promote that and the new songs the best we could. We’ve been lucky to of been asked to play one of our favourite festivals ‘Outcider’ in August and have managed to secure a few dates later on this year with Grifter and Gorilla all of which are gonna be damn fine rawcus events. How would you describe the rock and metal scene across Dorset and how do you stay motivated to keep booking in so many shows? Personally as a band we’re not hugely connected to the metal scene here in Bournemouth so we couldn’t really comment on that, but
there does seem to be a plethora of bands playing at The Anvil which seems to be the go to place for Heavy music here in Dorset. I think there’s a lack of bands in the Heavy Garage Rock/Rock N Roll/Stoner Rock genre which is a bit of a shame as it gets difficult to book local shows playing with the same bands every time, So we tend to try and keep the local shows down to a minimum, unless there’s a festival on. We try to bring bands down from outside of Dorset if we can. There’s a couple of festivals on your upcoming gig list, how is the outdoor festival experience different from a club show, and do you have a preference? We love playing both. The live scenario is where we come into our own and we can let loose. Festivals are a great way of playing to a new audience and getting our sound out to the masses on a large speaker system, but the club gigs are just as important to us as we like getting up close and personal with the crowd, so they can feel part of the whole fuzzy, sweaty experience. You are successfully playing a lot of out of town shows and creating quite a buzz. What tips would you give other bands looking to get shows up and down the country?
We would say just do your research and find the right venue and promoter for your style of music. Don’t waste your time trying to book shows at big venues if you’re still at grassroots level. It’s a waste of everyone’s time. Start small and work hard. Having a decent press pack with a selection of your best material and all the info about your band is a big help too, as is organising yourself with transport. Don’t rely on someone else to do the dirty work.
“We like getting up close and person al with the crowd, so they can feel par t of the whole fuzzy, sweaty experience .”
You got a new album coming out! Give us the lowdown on what we can expect? Our new self released full length album ‘Electrohypnosis’ is out now and is available through our website and Bandcamp page as a limited edition Digipak and download. We recorded back at Gizzard Studios in Hackney, London with Ed Deegan where we have previously recorded our first E.P and single. Gizzard is a true analogue, live recording studio. Ed is a wizard at the controls and has worked with acts as diverse as Mudhoney, Purson, Billy Childish, Ron Wood and Mark Ronson. The album title references the power of human electricity, the production of volume, sound and tone to manipulate the senses and create a euphoric state of mind. Amidst this is a passionate statement about standing up for your rights, trust and the lack of it in the modern world, keeping true to yourself, fighting back against police brutality, explosive love, living to excess, fantasy film scenarios of drug running through the deserts of Nevada and doing it all because it’s embedded in your bones and speeding through your veins. People can expect a darker side to our already tried and tested formula of Heavy Garage Rock, Fuzzed up and Psyched out Punk Blues N Roll. Throwing into the mix down tuned guitars with a raw and primal attitude, are 10 tracks of adrenaline fuelled dirty riffs and a thunderous rhythm section making up one healthy dose of filthy Rock n Roll. May contain nuts!
What shows stand out to you as particularly memorable concerts you’ve attended in venues across Dorset? Conan, Grifter, (The Anvil) ,Ruts DC ( Mr Kyps), Pussycat & The Dirty Johnsons ( Chaplin’s Cellar Bar), The Jam, XTC ( The Village Bowl ) Whats comes after the album launch for The Electric Shakes? Play some more shows to promote the album and start arranging a tour of sorts for next year. We have a track appearing on the cover mount CD in Classic Rock magazine which we hope will give us a big boost. There is also possible talk of a 7” single release but we’ll have to wait for that. If there’s any small labels or promoters or festivals out there who want’s to get us on board, then just holler. Apart from that it’s business as usual. Shake ‘Em Up.
By virtue of your Punk’n’Roll sound The Electric Shakes fit equally well on both punk and rock bills, what would you say the main differences between the two crowds are? I think the crowds are relatively the same as far as we can tell. They certainly all drink as much as each other. We have never consciously tried to be your typical ‘Punk’ band even though it’s in our roots and from some of our backgrounds. I think this has come through naturally in our attitude and partially our live show and sound, hence why we got asked to support Stiff Little Fingers a few years back and then consequently featured in Vive Le Rock magazine. I think possibly there’s a bit more politically charged aggression surrounding music at the moment which was always seen amongst the Punk crowds, but things are changing, with more people of all genres of music being socially aware of their surroundings and standing up for human rights and moral and ethical issues we all face day to day. It’s all Rock N Roll at the end of the day. So let’s all party and get on. Having been about the Bournemouth scene for a fair while you must have seen a lot of the local talent, any that stick out from the past as your fav’s and any we should be keeping eye on to do big things in the future? Current bands - C30’s, The Chime, Dead Lettuce, Snail Chasers, Meat Sweats and Thin Wire Fence. Bands of the past - The Clams, Death Valley Riders, The Scavengers...

THE GREAT DORSET STEAM FAIR
Ten miles of electric cable, 200 tonnes of coal, 550 barrels of beer! These are huge statistics by anybody’s standards. Statistics that Michael Oliver and his pioneering colleagues in the Dorset Steam & Historical Vehicle Club surely could never have imagined would apply to their own ‘little show’. But that was 49 years ago when the show was in its formative days. How things have moved on in the time since
The Wurzels
The Greast Dorset Steam Fair is without doubt one of the largest events of it’s kind in the world. Bringing together 200,000 visitors over five days, it has developed into the World’s largest heritage and cultural event showcasing Great Britain’s national industrial, agricultural and leisure history.
With over 2,700 sections of heras fencing errected, over 10 miles of electrical cable laid and with just 28 days to turn to farm into a safe event area, run the show and turn it back to working farm! This is a huge undertaking Alongside the Steam attractions, historic motor vehicles, world war commemorations and stunt displays, the GDSF also plays host to its very own music festival. The Music Festival consists of 6 stages with an action packed line-up of entertainment, both during the day and late into the evening, offering a wide variety of music to suit a diverse audience. The organisers proudly decalre that their Outdoor Concert Stage “attracts some of the country’s very best cephalexin without prescription”, tribute acts as well as a number of chart topping
older and original bands. Another four stages are housed within huge entertainment marquees plus the Countryman outdoor stage situated near the craft tents attract a great line up ranging from the best party bands to a mixture of Folk, Country & Western and rock bands. We can assure you of a great variety of music to suit all tastes including the hugely popular Dr Busker and the Steam Fair Choir. The main outdoor stage will feature many bands from across Dorset which will sound familiar to anyone who attends shows across the region. Local rock stalwarts Saints Of Sin who draw influence from the likes of Bon Jovi and Guns n’ Roses will kickstart things on the Thursday with tribute to the Gallagher brothers ‘Oasish’ headlining the opening night. Friday the music starts at 1pm with ‘Foot stompingly infectious’ singer song-writer Jack Marshall. A few months ago, this magazine covered The Pogues competition, ‘A shot at discovery.’ The winners of the Dorset contest were blues rockers DD Allen and they’ll be on stage at 6pm, warming up for headliners The Wurzels. The Wurzels need no real introduction, flying the Somerset flag high since 1966 it’s sure to be a cider swilling, sing-a-long to west country classics such as ‘The Blackbird’, ‘I am a cider drinker’ and of course the track which has embedded them into musical history, ‘Combine Harvester.’ Across the rest of the weekend you’ll have the chance to see tributes to The Who and The Police. SKA mad Sunday will takeover the proceedings at the end of the weekend featuring Madness tribute One Step Behind alongside well known locals The Decatonics, Big Brass Ska and Skamagedon. So if you’re looking for an excellent fun and action packed day out for all the family, you’ll love the Great Dorset Steam Fair. Traditionally this English fair is held at the village of Tarrant Hinton, near Blandford Forum in the heart of the beautiful Dorset countryside. Further directions are superfluous. Just find the village on the map, head in that direction and follow everyone else to the show.
