ROCK REGENERATION November was by far the busiest month so far this year for gigs, there was just so much going on. I was just disappointed that I could not clone myself so I could get around to see more...

One of the highlights of the month was the return of one of Walk The Night (and some bloke) Dorset’s premier party band ‘Disco’s Out (Murders In)’ who performed a storming gig at Mr Kyps in Poole showcasing some great new material. I was also fortunate enough to see a great performance at the Winchester in Bournemouth of a relatively new band called “Hope & The New Flower Generation” a piano led band with some great songs that feature some delightful harmonization. Rock band Walk The Night came along to the Hope Fm radio station for an amazing acoustic session with some great stripped down versions of their songs including a fantastic new number called “World Is Still Mine” a song that every rock fan really needs to hear. At Chaplin’s in Boscombe the excellent local singer/song writer Jack Grace was welcomed back by his loyal following of fans who were treated to a huge hour and a half set of all first class original songs. This included Jack’s very emotive new single “406” which with the very passionate vocals cannot fail to Our gigs of the Month move anyone who listens to it. 6th December : Quinney Quinney/Dog House Boat Boys- Chaplin’s, Boscombe In the words of Martin Luther King “I had a dream”, 7th December : Tenacious D - O2 Academy, it was about bringing all the best local rock Boscombe Bournemouth bands together for one special gig. 13th December: Death Of An Artist(Ep Launch)Anvil, Bournemouth Thanks to Mr Kyps, I am pleased to announce that 20th December: Broken Branches/Shona Lowethis gig will take place on the Sunday 29th December. Kasbah Club, Boscombe We have called it the “Rock Regeneration Christmas 29th December: Willowen(Album Launch)- Ocean Shindig” and it will feature four great bands: Saints Of View Hotel, Bournemouth

If you had the chance to give up the band life to become a pirate would you do it? I don’t think so. Although Ant and Bax could give Black Beard a run for his money, their beards are magnificent. If you had to eat one of the following what would it be: Octopus Tentacles, kangaroo’s tail or zombie brains? I tried Kangaroo in Oz, was decent so we’ll go with that. Seafood sucks dick unless it’s battered and zombie brains would cause some intestinal issues. How was the band formed? Just 5 mates who liked heavy music jamming together, simple as that really. What goes around the world but stays in a corner? A stamp. (Cheers Google) Who would win in a race, Dead Harts or Demoraliser? Since Dexter has dropped a shitload of weight Demozza would have gotten quicker but us Harts lads are likely to use rough tactics to get the upper hand. Where’s the weirdest place that inspiration for a song has struck? Once saw a mate’s phone number and used it as a template for a techy breakdown. What album/song are you ashamed to admit you secretly love? I’ve got a quite serious obsession with Celine Dion’s Falling into You album and her in general. But if anyone identifies her by that shit Titanic song again I will take their life from them. There’s so much more to her. If you knew today was your last day on earth, how would you spend it? Getting annihilated on the nosebags and f**king until I couldn’t support my own weight. If you had a snail that could magically grant wishes, what would you name it? Gary. Gary the snail. Gaz once I’d got to know him. The fact he could grant wishes is irrelevant to be honest. How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before? To someone who knows decent music: A cement mixer full of The Chariot and Norma Jean. To someone who doesn’t: Heavy. No, not like Slipknot. Why should we come to see your live show? We go hard every night and we don’t do standing still. We’re passionate about what we do and we show it to the point of collapse. Skindred roll into Southampton next month – everyone’s favourite ragga metallers are sure to wake us all up out of our post-festive season slumber when they hit The Mo Club on 23rd January. It’s hard to believe that the smash hit debut album Babylon is over a decade old but with the hotly anticipated Kill the Power set for release in January we know you can expect a live show full of new surprises, old favourites and of course, the famous Newport ‘Copter. Recently, the band have been working their little socks off. Amongst trying to finish recording and mixing the new album, they’ve been playing headline shows and festivals across the globe, recording videos in India, teasing us with snippets from Kill the Power and generally having LOADS of fun. We caught up with the band in Berlin and had a good old chat with Dan (Pugsley, bass) to find out a bit more…. So, there’s been a lot of build up towards Kill the Power coming out, what can we expect? How has the Skindred sound evolved? I think that Kill the Power is really the record we wanted Roots Rock Riot to be, there’s a lot going on there. There are songs on the new record that really lean towards Babylon style Skindred, heavy dancehall, detuned guitars, all high energy stuff, and there’s a part of the record that’s a development of some of the ideas on Union Black, really bringing the electronic, production elements forward. Then there’s this relatively unexplored element to Skindred on there.... I hate saying “mature” when talking about music, that’s usually a red flag for me, but we’ve written some songs that I think just stand out. I wanted to make a record like Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I loved that record and it was so influential on me growing up, an album with tons of material, all quite different but all totally representative of the band. You’re well known for your high energy live shows, is it tough recreating that on a record or do you think the two should retain a degree of separation? I read this Jimi Hendrix quote before we ever started Skindred, and it was something to the effect of how you should use the studio as an instrument in its own right. We’ve always approached it that way; do what you do in the studio and just figure it out later on. Live is its own thing, you may not be able to have a huge

string section with you on tour, but having a live band in front of you is so powerful in its own right. Nowadays, having Dan Sturgess on stage with us, those lines have been blurred because with his set up he can trigger parts from the album that would have been impossible to play live otherwise. You’ve certainly been busy recently, with trips to Japan and India to name a few. Where have you seen the most surprising response to your music? Japan is always amazing, and India was crazy... I never imagined we’d ever be playing there. The crowd was amazing, totally amazing. The place with the most surprising, or powerful response was Turkey. When we played a festival there this year it was the first event since all the social unrest that happened earlier in the year. At the heart of it we are just a bunch of guys that write and play music that we love and we want people to have a good time and dance, be themselves at the shows, but when it goes further than that its mind blowing. When we opened with our song “Stand For Something” the crowd sang it with such passion where they’d really taken on the lyrics, I was really moved. Never felt anything like that before. Where has been the most fun and why? I just love Japan! I love being in that country, always so fun to play. If I’m totally honest it’s because I love the food so much haha! It must get tiring travelling so much – does anyone in the band have any habits that particularly grate when you’re on the road? Do people in my band have bad habits? Absolutely! I’m just trying to think of something that you’ll be

allowed to print. I’ll use Arya because he’s a good sport, he loves to play annoying games where he poses you with two disgusting scenarios, usually involving body parts and excrement and you have to choose which one you’d do if you had to do one... and give your reasons. 5 minutes of it is actually quite amusing but when you’re trying to sleep when you’re travelling or trying to relax and all that’s going on... it grates a little ha!
Which up and coming artists would you recommend Skindred fans check out?
Do any of you have any other talents, apart from musicianship?
Dan, you’re originally from Southampton. Does that make playing here a different experience to other towns? We think Southampton holds a torch for Skindred and really sees you as being one of ‘our’ bands!
I think everyone has their own thing when we’re at home. Benji is very much music orientated; I’m pretty much the same with comics and cooking thrown in. Mikey is really getting into tattooing, he’s actually working at a studio when we’re not on tour and Arya loves the business side of music, that’s more his thing, he’s managing a couple of bands. The music industry has changed a lot since Skindred first formed, have there been any hard lessons learnt along the way? The industry has changed a ton since we started! We came out at a time before downloading, by the time our second record dropped it was the norm. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learnt is just make music you love, regardless of how commercially viable it is, because really, nowadays it’s so hard to sell albums if you’re just making music you don’t care about to make a buck and it doesn’t sell? You’ve cheated the people and cheated yourself. Better to be real. That is true success. I don’t need any awards or pats on the back. There’s been a lot of debate recently about the future of live music, with many smaller venues closing across the country. What do you think can be done to enthuse the public to come back out to support live shows? The issue of getting people back to shows is tricky. I think it’s just that at the moment people don’t have a lot of money to go to shows. A lot of music fans I know, rather than going to lots of gigs throughout the year will save and go to a festival, treat it like a holiday, especially with festivals becoming more accessible to families. That does prove the market for live music is there, it’s just going to take some time before people can afford to get to gigs regularly again. Take the recent furore over the Download 2014 announcements for example, do you think there are simply too many bands available these days, with a lack of new big players coming forward to carry the mantle of ‘headliner’?
I think we like bands that are just doing their own thing and doing it really well. I have got a lot of love for Turbowolf. I think those guys are great, really looking forward to their new record. I saw a band the other day called Empire, just been sent their album. I think they’re definitely one to watch, great guitar playing and singer’s voice is unreal... like a soulful Bruce Dickinson... ha!
Yeah definitely, obviously I grew up there till I moved to Wales and started the band. At our first shows in Southampton there was always a contingency of my friends there, it being a home town thing so I think that really developed the relationship. Benji has always said in private “Southampton just get it” and I think that’s because Skindred in part is a product of Southampton. It’s always had a great alternative scene. I’d go to nights (probably a little younger than I should have been) and hear DJ Hammy play records, but then there’s always been this dance music thing here too. The city has been very influential on my tastes and therefore the music we make. With such a great back catalogue, how do you decide what to play at your live shows? It is getting harder to choose the songs we play live. There are some mainstays in there; people always want to hear Ratrace, they always want to hear Nobody, so we have to be aware of that. What we tend to do now, for our own sanity, is to play all the “classics” but do new things with them, give them different breakdowns or create mash ups with other songs. Doing that with the set has given us a lot of freedom. And finally, is there a question that you wish interviewers would ask but they never do? What is it and what’s the answer? One lump or two? But none for me, I’m sweet enough haha!

Absolutely. There’s been this thing for a while, unless you get Metallica or Iron Maiden to play your festival it’s just not going to sell. I think it’s really up to the promoters to champion newer bands and bring them through. I think that’s been the case with Rammstein and Slipknot, but those are still bands that have been established for at least 10 years! Promoters need to take a chance, because it’s an investment in the business as a whole.

Since his forced retirement from Superbike racing, James has pursued a full-time rock career with an all-consuming passion that has seen him collaborating with Little Angels legend Toby Jepson to write an album packed with hard rock and power ballads. He’s using the grit, determination and will to succeed that made him a double world champion to focus on pursuing his first passion in life: music. You’ve already sustained a hugely successful racing career, how did you make the transition from racing to rock music? I actually studied music and piano playing way before I was introduced to motorcycling. My Grandmother (Pam) played the piano and that’s where my love of music started. I had lessons from the age of 8 all the way up to the age of 16 when I had to unfortunately give the lessons up once I got my first world championship ride on the motorcycle circuit. But throughout my motorcycle career I had a keyboard in my motorhome and I played most days as playing was my complete get away from the high speed world of motorcycle racing and it was the only thing that stopped me from being an obsessively competitive racer!!!
What is it like building an entirely new career after having been so famous from racing? To look up at the ladder from the bottom again has been a massive life challenge for me after being at the top for so many years in my previous career and I knew there would be a transitional period for the people who supported me as a racer to accept and respect me as a musician, but with all the hard work with Toby on producing the very best we could with the album, everyone so far has been amazingly complimentary about it. Also to have had the gigs we’ve been able to perform at in our first headline tour earlier in the year including, ‘Download festival’, Supporting ‘The Little Angels’ and supporting ‘The Darkness’ has been an amazing start. We imagine your stage show is pretty dynamic, what can we expect? I couldn’t be more proud to step out on stage with the guys in the band! Zurab (Guitars), Rabea (Guitars), Dave (Bass), and William (Drums) are fantastic players. The strongest part of our show is how obvious it is to see how much we love what we do! We all love the tracks me and Toby have produced and it shows in every performance.
What’s playing on your IPod/in your car right now? Right now its Planet Rock radio as they have really championed the music and put both ‘Life is Beautiful’ and Has music always been something you’ve wanted to pursue? ‘Renegade’ straight onto their A list! I always wanted to write my own material and I wrote half a dozen ballads during my motorcycle career. From performing those songs I discovered a completely new passion for playing And finally, you work pretty hard……what’s your songs of my own and that’s why writing an album was always favourite thing to do on your day off? Spending time with my wife, family and friends as life is so something I knew I had to do at some point. busy for us both. Working with Toby was one of the most amazing experiences in my life so far. I was so fortunate to have been introduced to someone who was so passionate about his art and I knew from day one that what ever came from our song writing sessions together that I would have the chance to show case myself in the best possible way with tracks that had real integrity and belief behind them. We have become fantastic friends from this experience together and he now co manages the band with Martin Tibbetts of ‘Strange world management’.

Renowned for throwing the biggest parties week in week out, the special Xmas guest will remain a mystery till the last minute (like a Christmas cracker, geddit?). Over to Poole on 29th December for the Rock Regeneration Xmas Bash at Mr Kyps. Our very own Chinners will be DJing and compering a huge night of local rock featuring Sansara, Western Sand, Saints Of Sin and Walk The Night and culminating in a huge special encore collaboration. T’was the night before Xmas and not a creature was stirring... except the Mother Ukers at Chaplins, masters of Ukular Fusion, modern day classics with a ukelele twist. Or if rock’s your thing then back to the Sound Circus for more festive fancy dress shenanigans with 100 presents wrapped up and waiting for those who are dressed up the best. FESTIVE EVENTS
So, to the biggest party night of the year... The Winchester is hosting a huge DJ-fest this New Year’s Eve - with tunes from all genres and all eras there really will be something for everyone. Halo host their very own Masquerade Ball and for one night only it will be transformed into a Palace celebrating the New Year in hedonistic style with a glamorous party to capture all your senses. Come dressed to the nines with the most outrageous face masks and head gear you can imagine, the more glamorous and intriguing the better! A Kyps institution, the band have sold out near enough every show they have played at the venue with fans returning time and time again. The reason for this dedication is simple… The band are very VERY good! The image, the voice and the energy of Freddie is here along with the stage show which made Queen so famous, combined with the fantastic songs which have cast Queen into rock immortality. Born in the shadows of punk rock, Skeleton Kid came to light in 2011 when bassist Timmy C and guitarist Frankie G bonded over a love of 80s Hair Metal, Punk and all things horror. Raised on the excessive rock n roll lifestyle, Skeleton Kid is all about the cardinal pleasures in life. With “boot stomping punk anthems” and a middle finger attitude, Skeleton Kid has burst onto the scene and declared it their own. Having recently won a fan-voted competition to open for Papa Roach in Germany the boys are riding high, currently touring and promoting their first full length album ‘It’s a Funeral Not a Fashion Statement’, produced by Tom Jobling and released September 2013. You can catch them at The Anvil on 17th January but we managed to drag ‘em in for a quick chat to see what all the fuss is about.
Who’s in the band and what do you all do? Frankie G - Guitar and Vocals, Timmy C - Bass and Vocals, Josh D - Drums You describe yourselves as ‘shadow punk’ – what does that mean? It’s a genre we created for ourselves as everyone was always asking to define us and we couldn’t! It basically encompasses punk, metal and heavy rock with dark emotional lyrics Which bands have had the biggest influence on your music? Motley Crue, AFI, Bullet For My Valentine, Marilyn Manson You recently won the opportunity to open for Papa Roach. How did that come about and what was it like? Their label was running a competition to open for them in europe by sending in a music video, so we did and thought nothing much more of it. A month down the line, it ends up that we were in the final with 1 other band for a date in Germany! We have amazing fans, and they all voted constantly for 24 hours and we won it! The gig was incredible, playing with a band that influenced us so much and stepping out in front of a wave of people was un real. The other band Glamour Of The Kill were also great guys and great to play with Was that your first experience of playing in Europe? Yeah that was our first ever European show, we got the call in Friday night about 7pm, and had to be in Germany to sound check by Sunday at 2. So it was all a mad rush and we pretty much had to drive over there straight away. Funnily enough our van was in service and all the equipment 100 miles away so we had to rent a van and borrow all of our equipment within one evening!!! What’s your favourite small venue to play in the south and why? We’ve played Tobys in Shaftesbury a few times now and they’ve all been incredible. It’s a small youth club in a historic country side town in Dorset but all the youths around pack it out when there’s alternative live shows there. The atmosphere is incredible, it’s like playing in someones front room, you’re so connected to the crowd. What would you be doing if you couldn’t rock n roll? Probably complaining about not being able to be in rock n roll! Why should people check out your live show? We’ve put a lot of work in this year on our live performance, it’s energetic and we like to play off the crowd. Playing a load of shows to different crowds this year has really grown our stage presence. ZAN LAWTHER
