We may know him best as the beloved be-sideburned frontman of Brit Pop legends Supergrass but recently Gaz Coombes has been striking out on his own and making not inconsiderable waves with his latest solo album ‘Matador’. In fact, as we went to print the wave turned tidal as it was announced that the album has been nominated for a coveted Mercury Prize. Ooooh… so what’s all the fuss about?

Well, firstly, it’s a big step away from the punchy Brit-rock of Supergrass. Over their 17 years and 6 studio albums together Supergrass honed their instantly recognisable sound and built a name for themselves as the cheeky chappy lads of 90’s Brit Pop with their hits such as ‘Caught by the Fuzz’, ‘Sun Hits the Sky’ and ‘Pumping on Your Stereo’. They worked hard, they played hard and ultimately the band paid the price when they announced their split in early 2010. But we’ve all grown up a bit since then. Well, Gaz Coombes certainly has and ‘Matador’ is a perfect example of a musician facing up to the self-doubt, personal loss and even the drug-induced tour psychosis of his past. “There’s definitely a tenderness, darkness and uncertainty to the songs,” Gaz says with a smile. “But I think there’s a resilience and a confidence about being vulnerable, even though that sounds contradictory.” It’s a story told many times before as artists separate from the confines of their band to express their own individual journey through their solo work. But ‘Matador’ is not only a step away from the high-spirited lyrical content of the Supergrass days, it also comes with a radical new musical backdrop, which Gaz first hinted at on his 2012 solo debut ‘Here Come The Bombs’. “That record was all about creating some distance from Supergrass in how I approached writing and recording,” he says. “In a way I think I forced the issue at times and put too many ideas on there; I guess that’s partly the nature of a first album… This time around I was more relaxed, more direct in my approach – but at the same time I still didn’t want the record to sound like anything I’d done before.” And it really doesn’t. It’s softer; it takes a massive step away from rock towards electronica and is reminiscent of bands like The Orb. Teaser track ‘Buffalo’ was the first release from the album and with its soaring soundscape it perfectly encapsulates the shift in Gaz’s writing and performance style. “It was a compliment when people said they didn’t think it was me,” he says with a smile. “It’s basically just Mellotron, drums and piano, but still with a really epic sound. That was what I was looking for; to simplify the music but still have these big impact moments.”

GAZ COOMBES

the dream-like cadences of ‘Oscillate’, it’s the sound of a songwriter melting musical boundaries. Lyrically, Gaz removes himself completely from the comfort zone of pop, tackling subjects as tender as the druggy darkness which descended on Supergrass (summed up in the chorus of ‘Detroit’: “The poison, the powder and the lies/ Better jump right in ‘cos the water’s fine”) it’s both intimate and unflinchingly honest. At its heart, however, there’s a romantic core that binds Matador’s songs together, most evident in the exquisite ‘Seven Walls’. “I wrote that with my wife,” says Gaz. “It’s a musical love story about the nights we’d have together in Oxford years ago, when we’d sit in the back of the car park having a joint and a couple of beers. Nothing special on the face of it, but it’s about the magic in those tender moments.” We get the feeling that ‘Matador’ is all about creating those tender moments for Gaz. It’s the noise of an artist opening themselves up and moving on and we can see exactly why it’s in that list of Albums of the Year. “There’s this disposable vibe around music at the moment which is odd, because it’s so obviously central to most people’s lives,” says Gaz in conclusion. “Life is full of moments of fear, loss and longing, but it’s how you get through those things and triumph over them which define you. But there’s as much light as there is dark on this record; there’s beauty in both of those states and that has always intrigued me.” Words: Zan Lawther

Playing all the instruments himself, Gaz utilises an arsenal of analogue synthesizers he’s amassed over the years, writing instinctively and placing emotional honesty over technical perfection. “It was a really exciting and liberating way of working,” he explains. “Lyrically I wanted to keep it very raw and emotive and the music reflects that. I’d start with a loop or a little riff then use this little blue box I’ve got to take it in various directions –whether it was using different time signatures, adding orchestral samples or speeding songs up and slowing them down. It might sound arrogant, but I see it as similar to the way you create art - you have to feel it on the spot.” There’s a sense of space which permeates the entire album. From the astral gorgeousness of ‘The Girl Who Fell To Earth’ to

SCOUTING FOR GIRLS

Scouting for Girls took the world by storm with the release of their debut album in 2007, which quickly reached #1, and they haven’t looked back since. The debut album, that shares its name with the band, contained a number of hits that are immediately recognisable such as: ‘She’s So Lovely’, ‘Heartbeat’, and ‘Elvis Ain’t Dead’. Following the incredible success of the album, the band began a mammoth UK tour until a battle with laryngitis put the tour on hold. Singer Roy Stride bounced back and the band rescheduled the tour, proving that he meant it when he sang “You can try, but you’ll never keep me down” on their next hit single ‘This Ain’t a Love Song’. ‘Everybody Wants to be on TV’ featured that single as well as a host of other Scouting for Girls classics, like ‘Famous’ and ‘Posh Girls’. By the time their third album ‘The Light Between Us’ was released, the band had toured the world many times, and had proven they were here to stay. At this point the band had more than enough anthemic hit singles to warrant the release of a Greatest Hits album in 2013. But it was a three year wait for fans before the newly crowned Kings of Pop Rock bestowed another studio album on us; and then this August the band announced the release of ‘Still Thinking About You’ featuring eleven shiny new songs. The band then released the first single from the album the very next day. ‘Life’s Too Short’ is an indie-pop masterpiece about refusing to waste time waiting around. With some fantastic orchestration and a chorus so perfectly catchy that it couldn’t have been written by anyone else, this might well be their best single yet. Other songs to listen out for are the slightly folky ‘Home’ and the upbeat ‘Three Words 8 Letters’. It’s the same Scouting for Girls sound we all know and love, but there’s a more mature feeling creeping in. When discussing this with the lads themselves, we decide it’s pop music for grown ups, however that hasn’t stopped them throwing their hat into the ring for the hallowed Christmas #1 slot. ‘Christmas in the Air (Tonight)’ stands out as a brilliant song, but maybe wait a couple of weeks before singing it down the street, to ensure it’s seasonally appropriate. To support the new album, the boys are headed off on a huge UK tour this Winter with special guest Mike Dignam and they’re stopping by Bournemouth’s O2 Academy on 4th December. We caught up with Roy, Greg and Pete way back in September for a chat that involved a lot of laughter and left us full of the Christmas spirit (sorry not sorry)…

DORSET MUSIC | NOVEMBER 2015

How would you describe the album in comparison to your previous records? Roy: A lot of people who’ve heard it have described it as a slightly grown up version of our first record so I think it’s what people think of Scouting for Girls but sonically it’s moved on a bit more. It’s folk-pop, or fop haha. It’s very British, summery, positive pop songs. Which song are you most proud of and why? Roy: We all love ‘Home’. I think it’s one of the best songs we’ve ever done and it’s great to play live. It seems to really connect. I really love the Christmas song as well. I was gonna ask about the Christmas song, did you write that out of season and was that weird? Roy: It’s weird talking about it, and people listening to it and it being on an album that’s coming out in October haha. Pete: We’re breaking boundaries haha Roy: I quite like the slightly Spinal Tap nature of that. But we never sat down to write a Christmas song. It just happened. It’s actually about an event that happened where we grew up where the town would close and you could walk down the high street and there would be rides and stalls and bands. The whole town came out, it was very Christmassy and the song’s about looking back at that now we’re older. A lot of Scouting for Girls has always been infused with a sense of nostalgia. And then the big Christmas hook came along and there you are. It seems to be nigh on impossible to write a Christmas classic, what’s your favourite Christmas song? Roy: I like ‘The Power of Love’ but it’s not a Christmas song at all. I like The Darkness too, we all like that. And I like Chris Rea ‘Driving Home for Christmas’ and that’s where I wanted to put our Christmas song. We will be putting money on our song getting to Christmas #1 but I might hedge my bets and put some on the other bands too haha. I’d just be happy with a chart position to be honest. Well I think it would fit snuggly in any Christmas compilation album… Roy: Oh yeah! I’ll take a snug fit haha. I write quite a lot outside of Scouting for Girls and every year I try to write a Christmas smash haha, but that’s not where this one comes from so I think that makes it a better song. That’s probably why my other Christmas smashes are gathering dust in a studio somewhere. Well you’ve written hits for pretty much everybody, haven’t you Roy? Is there anyone you’ve particularly loved working with? Roy: I’ve loved 5 Seconds of Summer because I got involved with them right at the beginning when they first

landed in the UK. I was one of the first people they met… Greg: What a disappointment! Roy: Haha, I just met these four 16 year old boys in a hotel room…oh. Haha! Anyway, I’ve been with them since day one and now they’re one of the biggest bands in America and what I love about them is they’re just a bunch of mates from school, like we were. They’re just lovely guys.

FEATURE

You’re about to release ‘Still Thinking About You’, it must be a pretty exciting time for you guys? Greg: So excited! It’s feels like it’s been far too long since we’ve released a studio album and it’s gonna be amazing for people to hear the songs that we’ve been working on for three years and hopefully they’re gonna be as bowled over by them as we are.

You guys have been friends pretty much forever, what’s it like working with your best mates? Roy: It’s amazing. We’re so lucky. Not many people get to work with their school friends. I mean, there’s not many people who probably want to work with their school friends haha. But we’ve grown up together and from being at school, to cubs, we’ve shared everything. It’s probably the greatest thing about this band. Pete & Greg: Aaw…he’s so lovely! You’re bringing along Mike Dignam with you, how did that come about? Roy: Literally we have the same agent. And I’d come across Mike on Spotify as it was recommended when I was listening to Lewis Watson and his agent came to us and said he was available for the tour. I love the fact that you can have that on a tour, bring along another great artist that you wanna see. Pete: And it’s acoustic, so he won’t take up too much room! What can we expect from the live shows this winter? Greg: Well, it’s in November. So given the upcoming #1 we’re gonna make it quite festive. Pete: Quite festive…? Greg: Well I didn’t wanna overdo it on the festiveness as it’s only October haha! Pete: It’s September… [All: Much laughing and top banter, obvs.] Roy: I don’t think we’ve ever been a band that’s taken ourselves too seriously so we’re going to make it really fun and do some stuff we’ve never done before. We’ll obviously do all the songs people wanna hear but we’ll have a few surprises in there. It’s going to be very Christmassy. I want to get people to come in Christmas fancy dress but I think we need to talk about that nearer the time cos it might put people off! Pete: What about a Christmas jumper competition? Greg: Oooh it’s gonna be on the merch. I’m so excited about a Christmas jumper on the merch stand! Roy: Hohoho! I love Christmas now. I’ve got two young kids now but I used to work at Carphone Warehouse and Christmas Eve in a shopping centre, you see the very depths of humanity. Pete: Alright, I only popped in once! Clearly the best of friends, spending time with these guys was an absolute pleasure…and their album’s not half bad either. See you at the show! Words: Zan Lawther

SCOUTING FOR GIRLS

What Disney Prince/Princess would you most like to see in the Royal Family? Oh definitely the evil Queen Grimhilde from Snow White. She’s badass. She’d probably try to kill Cheryl Cole with a poisoned banana and the country would turn against her and banish the royal family. And we’d all live happily ever after. If you had to play one of your songs on stage, on the spoons, which song would it be? If it’s Good Enough for spoons, it’s Good Enough for you. If you had the choice to make unicorns real or bring dinosaurs back to life, what would you choose? What, unicorns aren’t real? Bollocks. What’s your favourite Dodgy song and why? A song from the new album, out next March, called You Give Drugs A Bad Name. Lyrically, musically it’s the best song we’ve recorded. Would you rather have a cat that can talk or a dog that can fly? I’m more a dog person but that’s a no brainer - OBVIOUSlY a cat that can talk, then you could rule the world. Imagine the secrets you could find out? If you had a flying dog, all you’d get is flying shit. If you were Captain of a ship, what would you name it? I am already co-captain of a mighty ship called the Good Ship Dodgy If you could go back to the beginning and choose a different name for your band, would you change it and what would you change it to? Oh f**k yeah, ANYTHING but Dodgy. What was your best subject at school? Maths. Maths rules. You’ve also played for The Lightning Seeds, but which band would win in a three legged race? We would because our bass player has a prosthetic leg which he could detach and we would romp home. If you could live in any place, where would it be? I’ve always fancied Topanga Canyon in California Would you rather have chicken feet or cats paws? You were doing okay until now. Chicken paws. Would you rather never shave again or never cut your toenails again? Well considering I am universally admired for my luxuriant beard then that’s anothe no brainer. Apart from yourselves, what’s your favourite band from the Britpop era? Super Furry Animals If your phone could only ever contact one person, who would you want it to be? Directory enquiries Are you working on new material? We’re always writing but we have finished a new album, Hold Up To The Light, it’s probably the best album we’ve done. Penguins or Meerkats? Penguins of course because meerkats aren’t real

It was 2010. The UK was lost in a world of Kanye and the rise of Tay Tay whilst all around us guitar based rockers gazed into the middle distance through the roar of a well-stacked pedal board. But glimmering through the fog came a band armed with a vibrant new combination of jangly singalong pop tunes infused with a punk attitude and all wrapped up into a high octane live show. The Vaccines had arrived, and they weren’t messing about. In 2011 they unleashed their debut album ‘What Did You Expect from The Vaccines?’ which flew straight into the top 40 with the follow up ‘Come of Age’ smashing straight in at #1. Since then they’ve not stopped moving; touring across the globe, playing every festival there is, picking up awards and gracing the cover of magazines and sharing the stage with everyone from The Rolling Stones to Muse to Mumford & Sons and back again. Earlier this year they threw a right spanner in the works in the form of ‘English Graffiti’, the band’s third studio album. Widely reported to be a huge step away from the signature sound, we can confirm it is the least Vaccine-y sounding Vaccines album to date. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of crunchy guitars and catchy melodies, but there’s a whole dollop of 80’s romanticism to several of the tracks and an air of discontented melancholy layered on top. This could be down to working with not one, but two producers. For this album the boys teamed up with with Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann and Cole MCN, whose name is synonymous with sample-based pop and R&B, not guitar rock. It’s made a difference. It’s made a record that is firmly in the here and now. A record for the good ship 2015 and all who sail in her. To find out more we had a chat with bass player Arni Arnason whilst they were strolling through Europe getting themselves fighting fit for the UK leg of their tour, which kicks off this month.

DORSET MUSIC | NOVEMBER 2015

How’s the tour going so far? Yeah it’s been great fun, really good fun. I think touring Germany is always good fun. Do you have a favourite city in Europe? Well, some places in Spain, and then Paris is always fun but we’re always here in Autumn. We’ve only ever toured here in October/November time so Scandinavia and places like Stockholm and Copenhagen are really beautiful at this time of year. And English Graffiti has been out for a while now, how has the reaction been? To be honest, I don’t really know. When you’re in the eye of the storm, you’re always looking ahead to what’s coming next so when an album is finally released, it’s just an event but it doesn’t bear any relation to anything that happens from that point onwards. It’s strange. We only really see it live; when we play the songs on tour and we’ve played them a lot now. We’re constantly thinking about the next thing.

as possible but we’re on a major label now so we are often confined to what we can do.

FEATURE

You’re currently on the road in Europe, where are you right now? I am currently sat backstage at a place called Luxor in Koln, which is basically a glorified pub.

You’ve toured with and worked alongside pretty much every legend out there, is there anyone else you’d still like to work with? It doesn’t really work like that. I don’t really think about it that way. I mean, I love supporting legends and working with those people but that only really happens if they ask you haha!

After your UK run, you’re off out to Australia with Mumford & Sons, who you’ve known for ages, are you looking forward to that? There is no band around that get as much enjoyment and do touring in the same sense that Mumford & Sons do. Whether you like their music or not, if you go to any of their shows or are part of their production it’s incredibly impressive and a beautiful place to be. It’s really artistic and full of incredible talent. There’s always something happening and their live show is really fun to be a part of. It’s going to be a really great one. It’s so inspiring. We’ve been friends for years but it doesn’t feel like you’re playing a gig with Mumford & Sons, it’s more important than a gig, it’s an event.

What can fans expect to see at the UK shows? We’re talking about it a lot at the moment and we’re really There’s a breakaway from your usual style in some tracks on excited about it and it’s going to be a lot of fun doing it but what the album, was that deliberate? we’re trying to do is get our head around how we can approach Absolutely. We allowed ourselves to use the studio as a tool, each and every show as an event, rather than a gig. We’ve got rather than a vehicle. Before we’ve only used it as a means to things brewing, hopefully most of which will happen but I can’t an end, rather than an actual instrument so that was obviously confirm anything just yet. But hopefully each show will be a a very conscious decision. stand out special night, rather than just a tour. You worked with two very contrasting producers on this album, what was that experience like? It was quite strange, as you can imagine. Dave has never worked with anybody else before and Cole is very young and Dave’s a very traditional rock producer, so it was quite a strange mix. So in the early sessions we kind of had to figure out what everyone was like and how everybody worked but I think it all worked out pretty well. And the result is, well, it would have been a very different result had either one of them been missing from it. You’ve always seemed to challenge listeners and the way things are typically done, what with not releasing your debut album until you were already well on your way to superstardom; dropping free EPs in between albums and a refusal to stick to one style…would you say you’re naturally nonconformist? I would love to say that. I would love to say that so hard but I think those aspects of our history do fall into that category and I would love for it always to be like that. I think the world would be a better place if we weren’t relying on traditional industry rules when it comes to releasing albums but unfortunately we’re on our third album. We’re not on our 16th free EP haha. Having said that, just in the last week there’s been 3 or 4 potential release ideas discussed within the band that would fall outside of a classical release schedule. We really want to be doing that and we always try to do as much

You’re doing 3 nights at Brixton Academy on this run, what was behind the decision to do that rather than a bigger London venue? We’ve done Alexandra Palace before and historically it was the best gig we’ve ever played and if we ever went back we think it would be a let-down haha. We don’t believe we can have a better show there. And the O2 is a shithole, Wembley is a shithole and Brixton is an incredible place. It’s one of the most historic venues in the country and all of us, long before we ever played there, we’d all been to countless shows there. Some of the best gigs I’ve ever been to were at Brixton so it feels like a good place to go. You’ve played pretty much every iconic UK venue, most festivals and all over the world, what’s left to conquer for The Vaccines? Haha! Wow, well, we’re in very different sized venues across the world. I’m currently watching the guys set up in a 500 capacity venue in Cologne so there’s lots of places that we still tour as a relatively small band so we’ll just keep going. And finally, what would you be doing if you weren’t in The Vaccines? Ermmm… I don’t know, I’d probably be playing the Barfly tonight with a band. I’m doing the only thing I know how to do! Words: Zan Lawther

Here at Dorset Music we like to hear stories about people putting music into our county so we thought we’d take some time out to focus on some of those unsung heroes who work tirelessly in our community to keep it brimming with musical treats. This month we’re chatting to Tom Newton, the man on a mission behind Teddy Rocks festival… Tell us a bit about the story behind Teddy Rocks... In 2010 I lost my little brother Ted, aged 10, to Ewings Sarcoma, a very rare bone cancer. Since we lost Ted, we have raised over £150,000 which we have given directly to children fighting cancer. The first ever thing we did was a gig inside our local pub. A traditional English pub... The landlady begged me to bring my band at the time down to play a show, as I worked at the bar at the time. I explained we are not a pub band (we were post hardcore). Long story short, I brought in 5 of my mates’ bands and put on a show. We had mosh pits, crowd surfers the lot, inside a pub. The landlady was terrified. We made £400 from this which we used for our budget to put on the first proper festival, a 2 dayer in the Corn Exchange. We raised £2,500. The following year we moved it back to the pub and built a huge outdoor stage in the beer garden and made it 3 days. We raised £6,500. The next year again at the pub with more gear and a better stage we raised £15,000 over 4 days. This year’s festival saw the same make up and we raised a huge £24,000. How did this year’s festival go? Truly amazing. It’s given us the foundation to grow and take the next step to becoming a real festival. £24,000 is a huge amount to make from £6 admission! What are some of the difficulties you’ve had to overcome over the years and how have you managed them? It’s been tough trying to get something for nothing and building up our pot to spend, but we endlessly fundraise and play shows to make this happen, and we really are nailing it now. The hardest part has been learning about licensing. Next year’s festival has involved us creating a 60 page document for the council amongst other huge steps.

DORSET MUSIC | NOVEMBER 2015

Why do you think it’s important to support this kind of event in Dorset? Because the kids need it, bands need it, businesses need it and the public need it. We have made something truly special which benefits absolutely everyone. We are actually changing lives, how cool is that? And we are doing it by putting on an insane show! That can’t be bad, right? I want to give up and coming bands the opportunity to share stages with their heroes. I’ve been lucky enough to do this over the last 8 years, and I’d love to give that feeling and experience back. What have you got planned for next year’s event? A new 2000 capacity site, big names headlining, screens, massive stages the works. We are throwing everything we have in to it as we believe we can make this happen. But we need YOU all on board. Words: Zan Lawther

TEDDY ROCKS

In 2005, venue owner Mark Kyprianou (or Kyp, as he’s better known) was approached to host Joe’s first ever UK concert. As Joe was an unknown, the concert didn’t sell well so in a final push, Kyp decided to offer free entry and refunds to those few who had originally paid the £10 ticket. Only around 100 people attended the concert, but those who were there were stunned by Joe’s dynamic and virtuosic playing. Today, 10 years later, Joe is playing concert arenas around the globe including appearing at the BIC as part of his current UK run.

Joe made me a promise he would return, and is a man of his word!” On November 1st, Joe will return to the venue where he played his first ever UK show back in 2005 and treat fans to a free concert. If you were lucky enough to get a ticket, we’re sure you’ll enjoy this once in a lifetime opportunity.

party of the month

www.rock-regeneration.co.uk

October was all about Oxjam!! 6 venues, 64 artists and a whole lot of money raised!

This month with the help of End of Trail Records I have put together a showcase featuring five up and coming local bands who I feel would benefit from exposure to a record company. The line up with features some great local bands who have worked hard over the last year really upping the game worthy of being heard by a much larger audience. The five bands are Xander & the Keys, Palms & Pelicans, The Remnants, The Electric Shakes and We Are Robot and will each play a 30 minute set on the night from 8pm. The event which has happened twice before in Bournemouth is going to be at the Winchester Pub on the 7th November and the doors open at 7:30pm. Tickets are £5 each and be purchased on the door if available or from the bands in advance.

The day went by in an instant, sure there were a few hairy moments where the stress of the day took over and I thought ahhhhhhh. The overall event has so far gained lots of positive feedback with lots of back slapping going on via social media from all the bands and artists involved. The team of volunteers were in the end much smaller we had hoped for and we were all spread thinly throughout the six venues. The thing was no-one (except possibly me) moaned about the short comings they all just got on and did their best on the day which was just fantastic. My only real frustration was that I booked most of the artists/bands that performed and I only got to see a handful of them perform. To everyone that was part of this fantastic event thank you so much for you time, patience and spirit in which you all performed, although I was not able to get round to every venue to thank you personally and believe me I would have loved to watch every one of your perform....I hear from my scouts you all did a fantastic job!!

Stereophonics are, for many of us, a band we’ve grown up alongside. Emerging from Wales in the middle of the Brit-popping 90’s they’ve endured 20 years in the business and continue to be as popular as ever, consistently headlining festivals, selling out arenas and pumping out good albums. And their ninth offering ‘Keep the Village Alive’ is no exception. It’s an album lover’s album, packed full of hits that flow into each other, taking the listener on a musical journey that allows you to lose your sunshine fuelled sh*t and then settle back down again into the tender loving embrace of their unmistakable rock songs. Breaking straight in with first single ‘C’est La Vie’ it’s clear that Stereophonics mean business. Altogether a cleaner, more refined sound, as the band have aged we notice that lead singer Kelly Jones has lost the harsh crackle on his trademark vocals; although they’re no less punchy, they are smoother than they once were, a sign of a man who’s tidied up his technique. Track 3 ‘Sing Little Sister’ is a flashback to what made Stereophonics loveable in the first place. Blues-infused, whiskey-tinged rock with a grinding rhythm pulsing through the backbone of the song, it stands out as a classic Stereophonics number. Pounding through ‘Song for the Summer’ which is just begging for a festival setting, we hit track 6 ‘Fight or Flight’. “We had David Arnold put some orchestration on that track so it became a bit of a James Bond song,” Kelly tells us “It’s kind of got that mechanical drum beat thing in there as well so it’s quite cool.” And track 8 ‘Sunny’ “That started as 3 songs in one. It goes off on that guitar solo thing at the end. I guess there’s a bit of Fleetwood Mac in there at the end, ‘The Chain’, and things like that,” Kelly says. And all of a sudden we’re being brought back down by the closer ‘Mr and Mrs Smith’ that soothes us and sets us up for getting on with whatever we’re listening to next; which more often than not, involves simply hitting repeat! It was no great surprise to see this album fly straight in at #1. Well done lads!

STEREOPHONICS ‘KEEP THE VILLAGE ALIVE’

Our cover stars from last month were kind enough to send us a copy of their latest album before its official release on 11 Spotlight on… September and we’re so happy Track 4 ‘I Wanna Get Lost with You’ – this anthem starts with an 80’s vibe, reminiscent of a new they did as we haven’t stopped romantic video filled with wispy haze and lingering stares but stands out as the sure-to-be soundtrack playing it these past few months. to many a budding relationship.

THE JIMMY HILL BILLIES

Bournemouth’s kings and queens of the hoedown, The Jimmy Hillbillies specialise in a heady mix of old time hillbilly and country tunes, mashed up with a driving rockabilly bass and beat then fused with some modern classics, to generate a distinctive and ultimately danceable band that are ready to bring the party at any opportunity. You may have already been caught up in the toe-tapping as they’ve appeared at numerous festivals in the region recently including Wonky Donk, Wimborne Folk Festival, Forever Sun, Camp Bestival, Freshfields, Boomtown Festival and the Purbeck Folk Festival to name a few.

What’s the most hillbilly thing you’ve ever done? The JHB Chicken Conga is a sight to see and often reeled out when we can see the punters are up for it. Personally, when we play Chicken Train and I’m on the Didge of Doom trying to run around the pub and get back to the mic, in time, in breath is always a challenge. What’s been your biggest achievement as a band so far? As a band, I think that getting the “At Home with the Jimmy Hillbillies” gig at Camp Bestival has got to be up there, we shared the posters, in the same sized font (!) as the likes of Underworld, The Kaiser Chiefs and Mr Tumble; can’t be bad! That said, the biggest achievement occurs every time we get people up and dancing and enjoying themselves, that’s the real achievement – smiley, hoedowning faces! Why should we come check out your show? Simply because, you’ll have fun! The toes will tap. The knees will bob. A little shuffle might occur. Then before you know it you’ll be bobbing just like you were born at home on the range.

If you could tour with anyone, who would it be? Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer, Elvis would be cool. Unfortunately, a lot of our hillbilly heroes are no longer with us. Of today’s crop? I’d go for Featuring mandolin, rockabilly double bass, country Dolly Parton or Ade Edmondson’s band The Bad Sheppards, or maybe guitar, accordion, skiffle washboard, didgeridoo, drums and a variety of percussive implements they’re Mark Kermode’s Dodge Brothers, oh Alabama Three would be good too. armed with an arsenal of instruments guaranteed to get you moving and shaking. We caught up with head If we were to do a tour tomorrow, we’d be up for going out with any of our local hillbilly friends the Skimmity Hitchers, Catratchers, Paper honcho Ski Daddle to find out a little bit more… Trains, Dead Plants – there is a really vibrant scene in the ‘Roots’ genre on the South Coast, we could just pop along the coast from Weymouth Who are you and what do you do in the band? My name is Ski and I play the banjo, washboard, pipe, do backing vocals, to Brighton and see our mates along the way, that’d be nice! jump around a lot and herd the Hillbilly cats. What’s next for The Jimmy Hillbillies? How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard Keeping people smiling and foot stompin’. Keep evolving the set-list – Harry Cotbeans never lets it stand still! Try and get a few more festies you before? under the belt (Wimborne this year, Glasters would be nice, Feastival if We call our brand of music“Rockabilly Stomp”, it fuses the driving bass and beats of a rockabilly band with the songs and humour of a country you’re reading ). We’d really like to get on Bournemouth’s Pier Approach stage this Summer, show the tourists what a Dorset Hoedown looks, hoedown band; think Stray Cats meets Johnny Cash! feels and smells like – that’d be cool. Maybe even release the long awaited second album - you never know. How did you come together as a band? We’ve a history of playing this type of Hoedown Music that goes back to catch them live: the old Gander Days in Bournemouth. We were all playing on the local 1st November, The Taphouse, Wimborne live scene in separate bands (Kentucky Fight Club, Slap Dash Picks and the Sightseers) and kept bumping into each other at various events. We 13th Nov Camdens, Westbourne, 14th November, White Hart, Wimborne, started jamming together at the SHINDIG and KFC gigs in 2013 and it 21st November Royal Motor Yacht Club 9.15-10.00 & 10.30-11.30. was born. The line-up evolved for a few months, but has now settled Saturday 5th December, Westbourne Light Up Festival (day time) down to 7-irregulars featuring mandolin, rockabilly-bass, banjo, two Saturday 12th December, Poole Yacht Club, Candle Light Dinner Dance. accordions, percussion, geetar and drums. The thing you notice about Tuesday 22nd December 7.45 - 10pm, Bournemouth Square Stage. JHB is the foot-tapping. Watch people at a JHB gig and their feet start a tapping, there’s a familiarity of the JHB songs, even if you’ve never seen www.facebook.com/TheJimmyHillbillies the band before. It’s infectious and after a short-while the foot-tapping turns into a full-on hoedown and the air is filed with yeehaws! You played a lot of festivals over the summer, what was your favourite? They’re each great in their own way. We love the Wonky Donk festival as it’s jam packed with our hillbilly family from across the south coast. Camp Bestival was also special as we hosted a 2-hour hoedown special. “At Home with the Jimmy Hillbillies”had the whole place jumping and doing the Chicken Conga. And for the sheer spectacle of it and the variety of people and things going on, the Great Dorset Steam Fair is also a great festy to play.
