FEATURE Without doubt Stereophonics are one of Britain’s most consistent bands. Their achievements are many and frankly, huge. The milestones and stats that apply to Stereophonics’ long and fruitful career speak for themselves. For example, they’re the 8th group to achieve 5 consecutive UK number 1 albums in a list that includes the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, ABBA, Genesis, Oasis, Blur and U2. They’ve enjoyed 11 top 10 singles including the number 1 single ‘Dakota’. Their hits collection, ‘Decade In The Sun’ sold 1.2 million copies in the UK and their arena tours sell out, every time. Not bad for a band that burst out of Wales in the midst of the Britpop era and have managed to successfully negotiate their way through the next 20 years, whilst many of their contemporaries have fallen by the wayside. But what’s their secret? “Ultimately, consistency in songwriting and adding something new to each album,” bassist Richard Jones tells us “Also being good friends and having the common goal of being the best we can.” “What’s good about the band is that we all still like each other,” lead singer Kelly Jones admits. “You talk about bands fighting but we meet up every week and rehearse when we’re not touring. It started off as an international food night going for a Greek or an Indian. Trying different foods lasted 3 weeks and then we just went to the pub! It’s nice to still have a bunch of mates to go to work with and I think that’s one of the reasons why we’re so prolific.” Having founded the band together, it’s clear to see that Richard and Kelly share more than just a surname (although they’re not actually related). “I’ve been with Richard since I was 3,” Kelly recalls. “I went to school with him. His mother and my mother went to the same school and we were born in the same hospital two weeks apart so we’ve never really had a row. Richard is the kind of person you can’t have a row with. He won’t argue back. He’s the rock behind you, ready to back you up at any turn.” Guitarist Adam Zindani is equally integral to the band’s chemistry. Having first appeared with the band in 2007 he’s now a permanent fixture. “Me and him are thick as thieves,” Kelly says. “We hang out quite a bit together. I took him to see Al Pacino recently and we were standing at the bar and this bloke walked in that literally was an Al Pacino look alike. We couldn’t stop laughing.” Drummer Jamie Morrison, although he only joined the band towards the end of 2014, is apparently already like a brother to Kelly. “I was in bed one Sunday and it’s always the same, as soon as your brain shuts off, the idea comes. The title ‘Song for the Summer’ just entered my head. I went in the garden, wrote it from top to bottom, phoned Jamie and asked him what he was doing. So we went to the studio, recorded it twice and that’s the version on the record.” Throughout their career the band has continuously released classic albums and their new and ninth album, ‘Keep The Village Alive’, is no exception. Since winning a Brit Award in 1998 for Best New Group, Stereophonics have developed a sound that is like few others and lead singer Kelly Jones continues to be one of

the most influential British songwriters of our generation, having written and produced their latest record. Recorded at ICP Studios in Brussels and at their own Stylus Studios in London, the band worked from an initial pool of over 35 songs. “This was almost going to be a double album at one point but double albums went out in the 70’s,” Kelly laughs. “There were a couple songs that spun over from ‘Graffiti On The Train’ onto this one, but I kind of leave the guitar in the corner of the room until it’s time to write and then I think the absence from not picking it up, when I do pick it up, stuff just happens for me. I never try to force it. You get quite excited about playing again.” Well, that sounds easy enough, but it’s Jones’ storytelling that pierces through their catchy and infectious rock songs. This is perfectly evident throughout the new record. “It’s quite an optimistic album,” Kelly says “That’s the key to the ‘Keep the Village Alive’ thing. Everywhere I went as a kid, what we were learning through life or whatever was through storytelling. You were always listening to somebody’s version of events.” It’s wellcrafted and clearly thought out properly as an album that should be listened to as such. Ignoring the penchant of the shuffle generation, Stereophonics have sculpted an album that takes its listener on a journey. “I still think of an album in terms of vinyl,” Kelly admits. “This is the first song that starts side one! That’s just my upbringing, cassettes and vinyl. The running order was always very important to me. I always remember ‘What’s The Story Morning Glory’ had a really good running order. It was a cracking opening track and then a bunch of singles and I kind of used that as a template for ‘Word Gets Around’ and have ever since.” In December the boys head back out on the road for a full on arena extravaganza and they’re kicking things off at the BIC. But with such an extensive back catalogue, how do they decide what we get to hear? “There are certain songs which we can’t leave out of a setlist,” says Richard “and these songs are a big part of the band’s history. We are also aware that we can’t keep playing the same setlist over and over. So for us, fitting in the big hits alongside recent tracks is part of the challenge. Sometimes it’s a big headache when you’ve only got 60 minutes on a festival slot and over a hundred songs to choose from!” which thankfully isn’t the case this time “It’s going to be hit packed along with new tracks from the most recent albums. We’ve really been enjoying the recent shows we’ve played and we’ve been adding some older tracks to challenge our memories!”
And what memories these lads must have! They’ve headlined pretty much every massive festival going, sold out arenas and played shows all over the world and they’re not done yet. It’s a wonder they can remember any of it. “The years we headlined Glastonbury, Reading/Leeds and the V festival; it was all a blur! I’d like to relive it to remember what it was like.” Richard laughs. And who knows? Maybe he will. It certainly doesn’t seem like Stereophonics are going anywhere anytime soon so we’d expect to see them gracing many a festival line up next year.
“Go with your instinct, don’t follow trends, use criticism as advice and work hard at being the best you possibly can.” The landscape of the music industry may have changed significantly since their inception. Social media, digital downloads and the constant influx of new and aspiring artists breaking through have all thrown down the gauntlet to older bands used to the write some songs / get a record deal process but Stereophonics have proved themselves adaptable chaps that have persevered and ploughed onwards and long may it continue. “Go with your instinct, don’t follow trends and use criticism as advice,” advises Richard when we ask him what he’d tell himself if he was just starting out again, “And work hard at being the best you possibly can.” A statement which seems to perfectly sum up Stereophonics’ attitude to everything from their careers, to their friendships. What would your stripper name be? Double bass Galore What’s your favourite board game? Tough one. Me and my girlfriend are into Pandemic, more of a team game than a competitive one, apparently . What is the worst song ever written? There are so many. I’m sure we’ve written a few rubbish ones too. How do you feel about the JCB song 10 years on? Still really proud out if it, it’s a song that’s touched so many people and it’s made it possible for us to both continue to play music for a living. Would you rather wear a skirt every day for a year or shave off your eyebrows? Skirt anytime, think of the freedom. What are you most looking forward to about touring with Moulettes? They’re really talented, lovely people so I’m looking forward to collaborating on a few tracks with them, i.e. stealing them for our show). Which of you would make the best girl? Me I guess, I used to have hair down to my arse (heavy metal days) But Luke, he’s all man. Name your top 5 Steve’s... Steve Harris (Iron maiden), Steve Martin, Stevie Wonder, Steven Hawking, Steve Peters (author). Chewing gum or Bubble gum? Chewing gum. Can you do a backflip? Not for a long time. If you could book a gig with three bands from any point in time who would play? Good question. Bjork, Rage Against the Machine and Paul Simon (Graceland period) What is your favourite spice? Turmeric . If you had to cover a nursery rhyme, which one would it be? Three Blind Mice as I think it’d very dark. If you could be any creature from Greek mythology, what would you be? An Ipotane. I’m a long distance runner, being as quick as a horse would be useful. If you had to take on one of the Moulettes in an egg and spoon race, who would you pick? Raevennan Husbandes. I think her hair would slow her down and give me a slight advantage

Dorset Music took up the challenge to attend as many festivals as possible this summer! Here’s our 2015 Festival Review Round Up! It turns out Pulp, and the brilliant team behind the Bestival empire, were right; we really do all wanna live like Common People. Bursting onto the Southampton music scene this May was a brand spanking new 2 day festival set in the heart of the city that sparked excitement and trepidation in its anticipation but with festival goers attending in their droves and knockout performances across the weekend from Fat Boy Slim, Grace Jones, Clean Bandit, Slaves and local heroes Band of Skulls, any naysayers were put firmly in their place. Carrying all the beautiful extras that make any Bestival event that little bit more special than other festivals, the hardworking staff managed to transform Southampton Common into a beguiling land filled with real ale, tasty treats, excellent cocktails and exciting discoveries and if anything, or only negative comment was that there wasn’t more things to explore. All in all a resounding success and we can’t wait to see what they have in store for us next year! Zan Lawther
The 4th annual Takedown Festival took place back in March, and continues to go from strength to strength. Takedown’s buzzing atmosphere ignites that festy vibe with five stages across two buildings, and enough rock and metal variety to appeal to pretty much anyone. Opening the 40 band day with the mighty Zoax on the main stage, the Takedown vibe quickly kicked in and the usual mayhem ensued at the Obsidian Stage with top performances from Mallory Knox, Fearless Vampire Killers, Dead!, and AshesToAngels to name a few. The festival also saw the last performance from the now disbanded The Blackout. Takedown is fast proving itself to be the place to be if you want to see up and coming bands just before they break the scene, Takedown once again proved to be the perfect kick start to the festival season. Laura Phillips [Sadly we’ve just heard that there will be no Takedown in 2016 - let’s hope they will be back soon]
Glastonbury Festival 2015 retained its title as the most eclectic festival going, hosting over 2,000 performances from Hozier to Kanye West, and Pussy Riot discussing authoritarian Russia to the Dalai Lama. No matter who you are or what you like, if the weather doesn’t ty to destroy you, you will love Glastonbury. This year was blessed with mostly good weather, and some especially strong sets including Lionel Richie, The Who and Florence and the Machine, with a more lack lustre and arduous set from surprise guests The Libertines. The controversial Kanye West, self-titled ‘greatest living rock star on the planet’, may need a lesson in music genres and on how to put on a stage show, but still managed to pull a massive crowd on Saturday night. Glastonbury 2015 was all over too quickly, but you can register for Glastonbury 2016 tickets now. Laura Phillips

Way back in mid-May, around 500 hardy punters headed to Sixpenny Handley in Dorset for what was officially one of the first camping festivals of the year. The 3 day bash boasted festival favourites such as the popular Scrumpy and Western act, The Skimmity Hitchers, self-proclaimed Kings of Cow Punk, Pronghorn, and popular electro-dub act Subgiant all topping the bill.
REVIEWS
The weather is on Alresford’s side this year, it’s a scorcher, the temperatures are high and so is attendance with the festival topping 3000 sales for the first time. No mosh pits here, when we arrive many families have already claimed their spot on the grass and plonked down their trusty folding chairs and blankets. It’s an eclectic musical mix today with local and national acts blasting out everything from classic covers to 80’s new wave to world music to ukelele jams to indie rock to pop punk and everything inbetween. Alresford is a superbly organised and safe family festival with a demographic ranging from babies to pensioners. I managed to avoid the dangerous temptation of the Perry-letic this year but, after some persuasion, I was convinced to engage in a bout of Zorbing (running about in a big plastic ball) by my son and proceeded to sweat out my own body weight in the summer sun, I think I felt better after the Perry-letic. Alresford Festival, as always, a lovely family day out. Kai Harris
A brand new festival, the site was just a stones throw from the now defunct Endorse-It-In-Dorset and many male attendees adopted the old Endorse-It tradition by celebrating Ladies Day on the Sunday. It was great to see tattooed punks dancing around their handbags once more! As you might expect, there was plenty of cider with over 12 locally sourced different ciders on sale. Early days for this festival, but a perfect way to kick off the season and it certainly does what it says on the tin. Jodie Copeland
Download 2015 was no exception to the standard Download rules – it was hot, it was cold, it was raining – but that didn’t stop it from being one of the best Downloads in a few years with mega headline sets from Slipknot, Kiss and (possibly a surprise for some people) Muse stomping in to take the crown for standout performance of the weekend. With a definite step towards a more diverse line up we were pleased to see the likes of The Cadillac Three and Aaron Keylock making waves after playing their sets and were particularly proud of Southampton’s spawn Creeper, Dolomite Minor and The Lounge Kittens all making their Download debuts. If anything, Download gets more rockin’ each year as more and more attention goes into the late night activities, the fun on offer in the Village and expanding the range of yummy food and drink available, so keep up the good work team and we’ll see you in 2016. Zan Lawther
Family-friendly Wickham festival fell on the hottest, most beautiful summer weekend this year, with sequined and decorated Indian umbrellas being the must-have purchase for some shade. The Big Top tent was full of colourful deckchairs as people sat to enjoy the varied bands throughout the day, whilst the rest of the festival was still busy with children’s activities, Morris dancing and the iconic 10-ft tall Scotsman and his enormous dog, who occasionally rolled over and squirted water from his naughty bits all over inquisitive children.... The music this year was full of treats, and I finally saw Winchester-based band The Moulettes, who enchanted the audience with their haunting harmonies and gritty bassoon lines. There were plenty of Southampton-based musicians playing, including Lowis Lanes, 71 Chain and the energetic Paper Trains. The atmosphere was amazing, and people wandered between beautiful clothes stalls as children made straw forts and castles in the heat. Rose Bowyer
Vibrant, energising, alive, colourful, relaxing, friendly, secret hideaways, dressing up, surprises, adults becoming kids again, decorations, lights, circus tricks, bubbles, music, dancing, theatre, comedy and serious fun! This just begins to sum up the type of festival Camp Bestival is. As a parent who used to go to many festivals ‘pre-children’, Camp Bestival is something I would like to tell all festival goers/come parents about! On my first night there this year (second visit to the festival overall), while stood outside a portaloo, I saw a man leaving the toilet in front of me. His daughter (around seven years old) was waiting for him. The man saw her, took her hand without saying a word, smiled and they both started skipping off together, grinning and wearing crazy hats. Myself and the lady next to me laughed. It summed up the atmosphere of the whole festival for me. Camp Bestival has so much to entertain children and adults at all times of the day and is very well equipped for babies, toddlers, young children and teenagers with chill out areas for feeding and changing, an easily accessible medical tent and the option to hire wagons (book in advance of the festival), should you want to use one as a portable bed when out watching headlining bands at night. It has a wealth of entertainment for all. Camp Bestival is must if you are a festival fan with children! Anna WIlson

‘I still ride my motorcycle; I still write songs to upset people and we still put on a powerful show... Punk still has that air about it, that up and coming bands like to fly the flag to be a bit rebel but if you have always walked on the wild side, it’s no big deal.’ ANIMAL The Anti Nowhere League set out on the road in 1980 to prove they could be the worst band on God’s earth: loud, violent, obnoxious yobbos with one mission... to get banned from every TV show, radio station and newspaper, just for a laugh. They were hated by the general public as well as ‘real’ musicians who thought they were a disgrace to the music business. They went out of their way to cause as much offence as possible in a world governed by twee popsters and power hair metal and it worked. For a while. In 1981 they managed to secure a crucial tour support slot with The Damned following the release of their cover version of Ralph McTell’s‘Streets of London’.The controversial B-side to this single, the wildly crude‘So What’became the band’s anthem and following their demise in 1987 was ultimately responsible for bringing them back when Metallica released their now legendary cover of it as a B-Side to‘Sad But True’ten years after its original release. After guesting on the song with Metallica at Wembley in 1992 lead singer Animal decided it was time to piece the band back together and although they’ve been through many line up shifts over the years, the anarchic aggression remains and Anti Nowhere League continue to pummel their audiences with the short sharp shock of their abrasive punk songs. The industry has changed significantly over the years but is that making it harder to maintain a punk attitude? Clearly not, as we discovered when we chatted to Animal recently. Not even a little bit.... You’ve got not one, but two new albums scheduled for release in 2016, what can we expect? Yes we have signed a 2 album deal with Cleopatra in California. The first of them (we are working on it now) will be all new songs to be released early next year. The second album will be of cover songs that have inspired me to get into the music business and hopefully that one will be released at the tail end of the year. It’s the 40th year of Punk next year so we want to get everything buttoned up for that.
What does it mean to be ‘punk’ in 2015? No different really. I still ride my motorcycle; I still write songs to upset people and we still put on a powerful show... Punk still has that air about it, that up and coming bands like to fly the flag to be a bit rebel but if you have always walked on the wild side, it’s no big deal.
Has your attitude altered as you’ve got older? My attitude has given me strength. I grew up on a tough council estate so learnt early not to take a kicking without fighting back. I think a lot of our fans know where we are coming from and it’s very ‘real’ and if you don’t like it then don’t come to the shows....easy.
And you’re currently writing your autobiography, how’s that going and when can we read it? My book is now finished ‘in my own words’ but at present it is being looked over by proof readers to check if there are any legal problems there!! Yes even now I am not allowed to say things to upset people... expensive old business going in front of the judge, so our publishers are going over it with a fine tooth comb. When they let go of it then it will go to print. It should (hopefully) be available mid next year. One thing for sure, it’s not your usual rock ‘n’ roll story!!!
There seems to be an onus on punk bands to be completely DIY, which is obviously how it had to be in the past because the media / labels etc wouldn’t support that kind of music. That isn’t the case these days, so do you think being DIY is still a requirement of the genre? It’s not the DIY that makes Punk still kick it’s the fact that shite shows like X factor and the Voice show how shallow the music business is. It always has been shite but nowadays some people wake up to the brainwashing and get their arse down to a real rock show....”the music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs......there’s also a negative side” (Hunter.S.Thompson).
Is there anything you look back at now and think ‘oof, I wish we’d handled that differently’? Yes the mid-eighties was a shit time... Punk had gone underground and we lost the plot. Lemmy told me our latest album was sh*t and I should have took his advice and quit the band then instead of dragging it on for a few years and watch it die miserably... only after Metallica covered ‘So What’ in 1991 and persuaded me to get the band back together did we reform as a harder skinned band with our original attitude back.
You’ve hinted about a surprise for fans at Christmas time, can you tell us any more? Our Christmas single is now finished and in the hands of Cleopatra, we were asked to do a cover of a Christmas song to go on their artists album for this Christmas. We have covered ‘Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow,’.....with of course a twist!! Yes I have already been told off about it but they can bleep it yes? Anyway there are a lot of artists on the album including Iggy Pop singing ‘White Christmas’ so that album should be the one for the old stockings for you anti people out there!
How has the rise of social media affected your ability to carry on your ‘we don’t give a f*ck’ attitude? Is it a necessary evil or a great way of encouraging more fans into the league? Yes I get my wrists slapped regularly but I did before the band. I will probably have them slapped after the band. I feel there are no more ‘cowboys’ or ‘rebels’. We can do nothing these days without pissing some f*cker off... well that’s not exactly true, you are still allowed to tattoo yourselves and f*ck yourselves stupid. There are no laws on that...YET.
dorset MUSIC | october 2015
What would you still like ANL to achieve? To have a major hit album and be invited along to all the best rock award shows and pose around with all the nobody musos pretending we were all somebody special... yeah like f*ck I would, musicians are so fuckin boring! The only thing I want to achieve is to keep holding my bike upright. What can fans expect from this next run of live shows? Blood sweat and rock n roll. ........Long Live the League....... The live album features two brand new songs; the rock-laden, big band fuelled ‘One Less Cross to Bear’ and the acoustic and mesmerising ‘Still Water’ as well as a whopping nine previously unreleased live tracks and a handful of Bonamassa classics. The thirteen track disc is a culmination of a lifetime of dedication to rock ‘n’ roll and Bonamassa himself couldn’t be more thrilled, or more humbled, by the experience of recording in his native city’s most elegant venue. “I am extremely honoured by a lot of things in my career,” explains Joe “but honestly, as a born New Yorker, getting the opportunity to play the world’s premier concert theatre will always be something I look back on and cherish. Thank you to the ten thousand people that came out over those two nights. It was a great honour.” The DVD contains 75 minutes of music, as well as a behind the scenes featurette. The first set was performed acoustic alongside The Huckleberries, who appeared on his #1 album An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House. For the second act things shift into electric mode as he takes to the stage with his regular touring band. For the CD, however, the tunes are interspersed, moving seamlessly from electric to acoustic Joe Bonamassa and back again, which allows the listener to enjoy both styles without having to pick live at Radio City Music Hall a favourite. It’s been a lifelong dream of legendary Packed with big band sounds, you can almost feel the opulence dripping from every chord. It’s hard not to imagine yourself on blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa to a velvet clad chair, amongst the high arches and play on the Great Stage at New York’s gold trimmings of Radio City. A must have for any iconic Radio City Music Hall and back Bonamassa fan.
in January, he achieved it. Twice. Both shows sold out and the demand to witness this spectacle was so strong that it was decided to release the performance as not only a live album, but also a live DVD, both of which are released on 2 October.
Spotlight on… Track 8 – ‘Different Shades of Blue’ is an acoustic, emotional masterpiece. Finger-picking his way through on the acoustic guitar, Bonamassa layers over strings and piano to create a haunting accompaniment to the classic blues tale.

www.rock-regeneration.co.uk The Oxjam Minjam at Mr Kyps on the 7th September was such a rewarding gig to put on, not only did the upcoming artists get to play a major music venue for the first time, we also raised close to £400 for Oxfam... The under 18’s were all so confident and provided some fantastic quality entertainment for the impressed audience. The all-girl band“The Truth Is”, though all rather mad, showed some great promise with a great performance of original material. Solo singer song/writer Sarah-Jane Toop exceeded expectations with an acoustic performance which included a breath-taking vocal performance stunning all who listened. The evening was such a success we will most definitely be planning another in the near future. One of my final festivals of the season was the Acoustic Movement Festival in Lytchett Matravers. A really chilled festival that enabled artists to show off their skills within a warm friendly atmosphere. The two day events was blessed with plenty of last summer warm sunshine. The line-up included some great performances from local artists including Tom Clements, Johnny Boxcars, Catrachers, Wikkaman and an impressive headline set from the mighty Bonsai Pirates. Also at the festival were Agatha’s Garden who earlier in the day were filmed by the BBC at the Lord Nelson for a new documentary about bands reforming. This month after a huge amount of planning on the 17th October we have set up the Oxjam Takeover Bournemouth with features a 64 act line up over six venues in Bournemouth. The full line up and details how to get tickets can be found elsewhere in this issue. I would officially like to thank my partner in crime Gemma Varnfield for all her help and hard work in achieving this. A huge thanks also must go to Matt Park and Mark Patrick of Freestyle who have worked tirelessly during the last couple of months. A big thanks also to all the artists and volunteers who have given up their time for free. CHINNERS

Cornish singer-songwriter Ruarri Joseph (his first name is pronounced like ‘brewery’, in case you were wondering…) creates an inventive fusion of blues, rock and soul, inspired by the likes of Tom Waits, Elliott Smith and Django Reindhart. You can almost smell the fresh sea air from Joseph’s hometown of Newquay in his music. Joseph brings his relaxed acoustic songwriting to Dorset for his farewell solo shows. NOV 13 | OLD FIRE STATION Former Supergrass frontman gone solo
Playing all the instruments himself on his latest album ‘Matador’ and using an arsenal of analogue synthesizers he’d amassed over the years, Gaz writes instinctively, placing emotional honesty over technical perfection. Lyrically, Gaz finds himself happily exiled from pop’s comfort zone, tackling much darker subjects such as the druggy darkness which descended on Supergrass . The best blues guitarist you’re yet to hear of. Ben Poole isn’t just critically acclaimed, he’s gained the respect and support from musicians such as Gary Moore and Jeff Beck. Inspired by the Blues, infused with a hard hitting, in-yer-face rock approach and topped-off by virtuoso musicianship, Ben Poole is being talked of as THE new up-and-coming UK Blues guitarist. A chance to catch a legend in the making. FOR FANS OF: JEFF BECK / JOE BONAMASSA / JIMI HENDRIX

DEC 05 | O2 ACADEMY OCT 17 | VARIOUS VENUES
It’s that time of year when music fills the streets of Bournemouth all in the name of beating poverty whilst giving local musicians a platform to perform. With a whole host of venues taking part in this year’s festivities it’s easy to see how this is one of the region’s most popular events Oxjam started in 2006, with over 1.2 million people having attended an Oxjam event and raising over £2.3 million for Oxfam! The concept is for each town/city across the UK to take over their local venues and showcase local music talent on the same weekend every October. Year on year this national music event has saved lives across the world, helping Oxfam to provide clean water, sanitation and emergency response to around 25 countries across the globe at any one time. This year’s festival sees the likes of Tom Clements, Aaron Gregory, Jack Grace taking up residency in The Four Horsemen; Chaplin’s hosts an acoustic afternoon followed by a raucous event with We Are Robot, The Sporadics and more; Inferno gets involved with Xander & the Keys, Choppers Children and Kimari Raven popping up throughout the day; catch Glimpse of Misfortune, Brothers Grimmer and Between the Void at Poison Apple from 4pm; Eden hosts The Mother Ukers among others also from 4pm and head over to 60 Million Postcards for the likes of Powdered Cows, Beartown Zodiac and Mechanical Audio. It’s like a who’s who of the local scene and you’d be crazy to miss doing your bit for Oxfam, and for your ears!

Who are you and what do you do in the band? Bob Fletcher - I sing and play guitar. Mandy Browne - I play drums and ukulele Tell us about how you got together… Bob: I commandeered their captains’ boats and they chose to join my crew rather than walk the plank. What made you first decide to learn an instrument? Bob: I was at college when I saw a video of Damien Rice performing ‘I Remember’ live, and I thought to myself that is what I want to do! That night I bought a guitar from my local guitar shop for £50 and the rest is history. Mandy: I’ve always wanted to play drums, ever since I was tiny. When I was 6 my ma bought me a flute, but as soon as I worked out you couldn’t hit anything with that, I was back on the case - eventually my dad caved and the rest is history. If you had to describe your music in 3 words, how would you sum it up? Fun, catchy, rum!
Rum soaked folk from the sunny south coast is how Bonsai Pirates describe themselves. While it may be a bit of a tongue twister (we dare you to say it five times fast…), it certainly is both accurate and intriguing. They’re masters of all things folk-pop adding a touch of indie a la Noah & the Whale, Damien Rice and Ed Sheeran to their sound. Their content and wonderfully playful live shows separate them as the cream of the crop. Having gigged relentlessly across Dorset for many moons, the band has seen great success at Purbeck Folk Festival and Freshfields. They’ve also gained a great deal of support at their own headline shows. Recently they released their debut album ‘All at Sea’ featuring songs about love, booze, the sea and tattoos (would you expect anything else?). The five notorious pirates are talented at much more than just sailing, pillaging and drinking. The songs include guitar, drums, bass, fiddle, ukulele, male & female vocals, and the occasional French rap… Yes, really. But wait! Before you take to the internet to source the bands fantastic shanties for yourself, have a butcher’s (or perhaps a pirate’s) hook at our chat with the salty sea dogs themselves…
dorset MUSIC | october 2015
You just released your debut album, how is that going? It’s gone very well so far. We have had very good feedback from both old and new fans. The album is on Spotify, iTunes amazon and our own website which is great and allows us to reach as far as possible. What’s your favourite track and why? On the album, ‘Schrödinger’ I think ,it has driven verses, a dance-able chorus and a catchy breakdown - what more could you want! That said, ‘Where’s your Cutlass’ is a very close second just for how well it is received live, which means someone listens to it at home! If you could tour with anyone, who would it be? Slamboree - for the fun! Frank Turner or Mumford and Sons perhaps! What can we expect to see at your live show? Energy (if you can see energy?), enthusiasm, rum, dancing from people on stage and off it, crowds singing along, pirates and the occasional lobster. What do you think of the local music scene in Dorset? There is a lot of talent across Dorset, and there has been as long as I can remember. I think sometimes it is hard to call it a scene as there can be a lot of apathy too though. More people to more gigs will make a tighter scene. How can we find out more about Bonsai Pirates? Through our website www.bonsaipirates.com or on Facebook at www. facebook.com/bonsaipirates and of course the best place to find out about us: at our gigs come say yo ho!
