How did you guys meet? Dainton: Accident and emergency, Pritch had fallen off his skateboard in the shower and broke his bottom... Pritchard: I went to a gay club for the first time and there he was eyeing me up and down and winking at me. From there on I never looked back and we’ve been lovers ever since. How do you come up with the ideas for your stunts?
It’s been over a decade since Dirty Sanchez first hit our screens with a very British take on home video, daredevil madness, as one publication at the time pointed out, ‘it makes Jackass look like The Teletubbies’. But even before the Sanchez there was Pritchard vs Dainton, what started as a daredevil fuelled skate-boarding romp evolved into the carnage you are about to witness sqeezed into The White Rabbit in Plymouth. Be afraid, be very afraid... you come up with, hahaha!
Dainton: Most of the time it’s just bad luck, like being in the wrong place at the right time, we turn that around into something to laugh at then, and hopefully, the cameras are rolling. Pritchard: We don’t really come up with the ideas, they normally just happen. If we do come up with a stunt then the person whose idea it is has to see it out. So be careful what
Has there been anything suggested that you’ve drawn the line at? Dainton: Umm I’ve had the fear a few times. When we did the last Dirty Sanchez series in Japan I thought I’d been set up to lose my ass virginity on a live game show, luckily it was only a bondage scene and some sort of traditional jap scat, not my cup of tea mind, but, it made a lot of people laugh and mum proud. Pritchard: Sticking my willy up Dainton’s ring piece is a definite no no, hahaha! What’s your biggest fear? Dainton: Biggest fear, loads, I suffer with obsessive compulsive disorder and hypercondria so I’m constantly living out my biggest fears inside my What’s the most annoying habit Dainton has? head with all the intrusive thoughts, putting Being late, no excuse for it. Although he’s getting better… myself through stupid situations helps keep If Dainton had to describe you in 3 words, which words would he choose? these at bay, a little. Idiot, gullible, sexy Pritchard: Spiders, electricity and How would you describe Dainton in 3 words? Mentally disturbed, OCD, sexy claustrophobia. If Dainton was really grumpy one day, how would you get him to crack a smile? Tickle his balls If you had to enter a TV quiz/challenge show, which one would it be? Wipeout, as I reckon I could win it easily Tell us one thing about Dainton you think we should know… He once took magic mushrooms in my parents’ house when we were younger and proceeded to do skateboard tricks in my mother’s best china room. I really wanted to stop him but I was tripping my balls off to so I sat in my bedroom studying my mate’s moving face. If you were Dainton’s career advisor, what would you have suggested he do for a living? Be a vicar
DEVON MUSIC | FEBRUARY 2014
Do you ever have days where you think ‘you know what, I just don’t feel like beating myself up today?’ Pritchard: Yeah quite often really. I’m massively into keeping fit so i do lots of swimming, cycling and running and that really puts me in a good place. Dainton: I don’t know man, I think
DAINTON VS PRITCHARD
there’s a lot more laughter to our brand of humour than just beating ourselves half to death but, we all need a little shake up from time to time to feel life and know our place in this tiny rock… How do you get over that and get on with the show? Dainton: To be honest I’m more nervous about walking out on stage than going ape shit so the part where you take the hits sits right at the back of your head until the hammer comes down… I also like laughing a lot, so I’ll go to lengths to put a smile on my face, and also the fans... it’s all about having a solid laugh... What’s the best perk that’s come from doing what you do? Dainton: The best perk hands down is travelling the world, it’s taught me a ton about life. Mind you it might have gone back out the other ear now... if you don’t go see what this planet has to offer you’re ripping yourself off, period… save up, beg, sell your bottom, do what you have to do to travel the world, I’m not talking a tourist hot spot either, go away get lost, travel to the unknown... eat that up all day... Pritchard: Yeah, definitely. Travelling. I love visiting new places and seeing new cultures and through Sanchez and skateboarding I’ve got to travel the world. I’m a big fan of the sun so getting to go to hot climates around the world is a treat
Witness the carnage at The White Rabbit, Plymouth on Feb 22
What’s playing on your iPod right now? Dainton: All sorts, I’m listening to Mike Patton right now, the original score from “the place beyond the pines”, I’ve got stuff from Death Grips to Celtic Frost, Odd Future, Trash Talk, Slayer, Die Antwoord, John Murphy, Ol Dirty Bastard, Wu Tang, Strauss, Pink Floyd….. Pritchard: From my 2 day party I had on the weekend I mainly played Queen as I’m a massive Freddie Mercury fan. Motorhead, Slayer, etc.
ZAN LAWTHER
What’s the most annoying habit Pritchard has? Shitting with the door open, dropping his rubbish all over the inside of my car!! If Pritchard had to describe you in 3 words, which words would he choose? The Noodle King How would you describe Pritchard in 3 words? MR 50 50 If Pritchard was really grumpy one day, how would you get him to crack a smile? Remind him he’s not in the Guinness Book of Records. If you had to enter a TV quiz/challenge show, which one would it be? Um? Probably some dodgy Japanese game show Tell us one thing about Pritchard you think we should know… Pritchard once stuffed 18 Monster Munch crisp packets inside his foreskin, and also 22 £1 pound coins, now that’s a God given talent my friends haha… If you were Pritchard’s career advisor, what would you have suggested he do for a living? I’d have to say a tour guide at the Freddie Mercury experience in Geneva haha...

Which of you has the most hair products? I never used to have any, but now I just have loads of three-quater full ones that I don’t even use in my suitcase! If you could pick 2 celebrities to be your parents, who would they be? Animal and Miss Piggy from The Muppets. Who are your biggest influences? Queen, Killswitch, SiKth, Exit Ten, Zeppelin, - i’ll go with that... If you could speak to one type of animal, which would it be and why? Dog! Who doesn’t talk to their dog in the hope that one day they may talk back! Who has the worst habits on tour? Sid - sneezes everywhere all the time! So gross! Metallica or Megadeth? Metallica every time. Would you rather be too hot or too cold? Too hot! If Sid had the choice of having to wear a rollneck every day for the next year or cutting his hair off which would he go for? He’d probably cut the mullet. If the band threw a dinner party who would be the guests of honour, live or dead? Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Ozzy and the rest of the original Sabbath, All of Zeppelin, - yeah, I guess anyone that’s worth listening too... Especially David Attenborough! Who is your favourite pirate and why? Jack Sparrow - it’s the obvious answer but i’m sure there isn’t a soul in a 500 mile vicinity of me right now that wouldn’t want to be Captain Jack Sparrow GnR or Motley Crue? Guns. What was your favourite book when you were a kid? I was forced to read Biff and Chip when I was a kid and it totally put me off reading, I occasionally read biographies and stuff, i like to be quite active so I’m happy to read more books when i’m riddled with arthritis and osteoporosis in a few years time. Although a good old instruction manual will keep me happy for half hour when I have a new gadget to play with! Sandals with socks or knee high socks with shorts? Knee high socks with shorts for sure. When a band as badass as Deftones do it - it’s an acceptable thing. What IS the best thing since sliced bread? Plum jam! Why should we come see you in March? We’ll be fresh back from touring all over the world and we’ll be dying to play to our own audience again. Not to mention we’ve gained a lot of new fans thanks to Radio One, Kerrang TV and Radio and we have to prove to the newbies that Heaven’s Basement is like Plum Jam! FEATURE Founded in Northern Ireland in 2000, The Answer have spent the last decade proving their rock ‘n’ roll credentials and making the kind of life-affirming, eardrum-threatening music that separates the truly great from the merely adequate. After a few self-financed, low-key releases, the band emerged into the mainstream spotlight in 2005 when their debut single Keep Believin’ became the subject of great critical acclaim and led The Answer to the ‘Best New Band’ award at that year’s Classic Rock Awards. The following year, the band consolidated that early promise with Rise, a debut album that received universally great reviews and backed up their burgeoning reputation with fistfuls of gloriously anthemic songs that delighted everyone from cantankerous classic rock fans to brighteyed teenagers with a penchant for balls-out rock ‘n’ roll. Rise went on to sell over 125,000 copies worldwide, a startling achievement that ensured that when the band released their second album, the mighty Everyday Demons, three years later, the world was more than ready to embrace The Answer on an even greater scale. The end result of their fearsome reputation, both as an astonishing live band and as rock’s brightest hopes, was a two-year stint as chief support to AC/DC, which took them around the world and into some of the biggest venues on the planet. Fast forward to 2013 and latest offering New Horizon continues to soothe the ears of hard rock fans across the globe. We caught up with frontman Cormac Neason ahead of their headline tour to see what they’ve been up to…. DEVON MUSIC | FEBRUARY 2014
The road to rock ‘n’ roll glory is littered with the smouldering remnants of bands that blazed brightly for a few brief moments and then fizzled out in a cloud of thwarted ambitions. But every now and then a band emerges that walk, talk and rock like true saviours of our beloved music’s spirit and soul. We reckon hard rock is having a bit of a resurgence at the moment, specifically with younger gig-goers filling up audiences – is that something you’ve noticed? It’s great isn’t it!! Rock can’t survive on past glories alone. There needs to be bands out there keeping things fresh and, most importantly, young people ready to rock out to real rock n roll music. It’s the young people who bring that electric atmosphere to the table. That “I don’t give a shit I’m just here to have a good time” attitude is what our gigs are all about. What do you see as the challenges involved in engaging new fans? Convincing people that we’re more than just the average rock stereotype. But that’s down to us and we love a challenge! Which bands influenced you to become classic rockers? Where to begin?? Free, Led Zeppelin, The Who, ACDC, Government Mule, Nirvana, Mettalica, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Clutch...basically if you take a playlist from any hard rock disco in the country….. those are the bands we love. We can’t NOT mention touring with AC/DC – what was it like? Were there any stand out highs and lows and do you keep in touch? A LOT of fun was had on that tour. 118 shows all over the world. The first two shows we ever played in New York were two nights in Madison Square Garden supporting ACDC followed by an appearance on the David Letterman Show. Should I continue? We missed a show in a Toronto baseball stadium because of complications on the Canadian border crossing and almost got kicked off the tour... that was a rare low point.
THE ANSWER
So, New Horizon came out last year and it has a more raw sound than some of your previous albums, what was behind the decision for that? We felt that the more stripped down we could keep our sound on this record, the more powerful it would sound. Having spent a lot of time on the road playing as a straight up four piece we knew we didn’t have to rely on over dubs and studio techniques to sound like The Answer. We just went in there with a bunch of good songs and concentrated on getting good performances from the four of us. Has your recording process changed much since the first album? We’re a lot more aware of how everything works in the studio now so can make rational decisions about the approach we adopt for each record. The first album was a definite case of hit and hope. Thankfully we had a great production team to guide us through. How do you guys approach writing? Are a lot of ideas drummed up on the road? We definitely draw inspiration and ideas from our time on the road. But the songs are always constructed and finished in our own rehearsal space. We have a studio set up to capture any jams that are on the money and each of us bring in our own songs so the whole band can work on them together. We also co-wrote a song with Devon’s own Cosmo Jarvis on this record which was a fun experience.
What was the first song to come together on the album? You know I think it was “New Horizon” the title track. That was one of Mick’s offerings and didn’t have too much work left to do in order to make it our own. How do you choose what to play live now you’ve got four albums to choose from? It’s tough and the cause of many late night tour bus arguments. It’s all about balance. And having too many songs is a great problem to have! What can we expect from your live show on the forthcoming headline run? We’re on fire right now having recently completed the first leg of the New Horizon tour. So expect to see an ass kickin’ hard rock band at their very best. What essentials do you have to have on tour? Ear plugs, toothbrush and an emergency bottle of Lagavulin single malt. What’s playing on the tour bus stereo? Clutch “Earth Rocker” And finally, if you are The Answer, what was the question? Really??

Every Time I Die began waaaay back in 1998 in Buffalo, New York with brothers Keith and Jordan Buckley. The band’s debut EP Burial Plot Bidding War was released in 2000 with their debut full-length album Last Night In Town in 2001 under Ferret Records, leading to a tour for that album in collaboration with Killswitch Engage the following year. Since then the band haven’t looked back, supporting a huge range of artists such as Jackass star Steve-O, Bleeding Through, Norma Jean, Dillinger Escape Plan, Atreyu, A Day to Remember and spots at Ozzfest and Warped. They’ve survived a whopping seven changes in bassist but remain a firm favourite amongst hardcore fans. Recent releases from this five-piece feature increasingly fat grooves and twin leads thrown into the mix, with each album treading different ground. Also well known for Keith Buckley’s intelligent, cryptic and often highly sarcastic lyrics, which are screamed over the pummelling beats you can expect to get well messy in the mosh when they roll into Plymouth this month. We caught up with frontman Keith to see just what we can expect…..

So you guys are always on the road it seems. How do you guys manage to keep up with such a constant, steady touring schedule? A LOT of self-medicating. You just find ways to make it work. There’s no other way. How does touring in the UK differ to America or Australia? People in the UK drink a lot more so the shows can be rowdier and the hangovers more crippling! Who’s been your favourite band to tour with and why? We like to tour with Terror. They pride themselves on the energy and love of their show as we do, so the kids that see us on stage the same night are going to be fully immersed in the positive vibe for the whole night. How do you like to relax when you’re not on tour? I’m not sure I’ve ever relaxed so I’m not the one who should be answering this question! What’s lined up for ETID in 2014 then? We have begun writing our next album and will be recording it in March. Depending on how that pans out for us, we’ll either be doing even more touring…….. or far less. You guys have gone through a lotta bassists over the years. Do you have any idea why that might be? Do you think you have such a tight knit relationship that it’s hard for the bassists to get in on it? That might be it. We’re a tough club to get in to. Maybe the new guys don’t have the energy or see the point. With a career spanning as long as ETID’s you must have experienced some intense highs and lows. Can you tell us about some of your most memorable ones? Playing at the White House would have been a personal high for me if…..it had ever happened. As far as lows go, I feel awful about the fact that we’ve never played any shows in Hawaii or South Dakota. Maybe we can change that. If you could be in any band ever who would you be in? Would I replace the bands vocalist? Because if so that would ruin one of the major reasons I like them and I would bring nothing advantageous to them. I wouldn’t like the band if I was in it. In that sense, ETID is the only band I could ever want to be in. What’s your favourite song to play live? We have a new song called “thirst” that I particularly enjoy because it’s fast and new. We’re loving the facial hair being sported by you guys at the moment. Beards are BIG in the UK at the moment. Do you have any grooming tips? Don’t cut it. Don’t touch it. Let it happen naturally. And please don’t touch anyone else’s. Your hands are gross. Tell us one thing you think fans should know about each of you….. Andy is a grandfather Jordan has never eaten chocolate Legs can do a standing front flip Steve has two different colored eyes and Keith doesn’t know how to use a compass.

So, who are you and what do you do in the band? I’m Tyler, I pretend I’m as good as the rest of the band. If you had to invent a new genre that describes your music, what would you call it? Too easy, it would be Tech-City. Like Motown but bigger and more tech. You’re currently working on a new EP, what can we expect?
Elithia, formed from humble beginnings deep in the South West of England, are 5 like-minded individuals who have a passion for heavy music. Their turbulent sound combines influences such as “Architects”, “Within the Ruins” and “Veil of Maya”, offering a new, refreshing perspective on the modern Metal/Hardcore movement. Within months of their conception, Elithia accelerated on to the local scene ...by winning the Plymouth Battle of the Bands 2010 and began to span out of their hometown, strengthening their chaotic live show. With the release of two free digital singles recorded with Stu Mckay at Studio 6, and a brand new EP due to drop later this year, Elithia are making their mark on the UK. After a well-received set at last year’s Takedown Festival and having already shared the stage with the likes of Lower than Atlantis, Bleed From Within, Hacktivist, Napoleon, Heart In Hand, The Algorithm and Heart of a Coward, the band won the Devon and Cornwall Metal to the Masses competition, which resulted in them playing at Bloodstock Festival 2013, their biggest performance to date. 2014 will see the band release a brand new EP and music video and with plans to tour the UK extensively to promote it, we reckon they’re going to be pretty busy. We caught up with them to find out more…
This E.P is the big introduction to our sound and is pretty much just our take on how to do metal. There’s a concept attached to the whole thing too, our message or ethos so to speak. Where have your biggest influences come from? Our biggest influences currently (they always change) are probably, Architects, Within the Ruins, Dream Theatre and Drake. The music industry is getting more and more difficult for up and coming bands. Are there any particularly important lessons you’ve learned so far? Oh it’s a cruel world out there. We’ve just learned that either way you’re not going to be financially successful and probably not famous either unless you’re really lucky. So instead of playing what you think is cool or trendy just to achieve a bit of recognition or success, just play what you fully enjoy doing. When you find the sound that motivates you to travel miles and miles for nothing, that personal enjoyment will probably take you further too. Besides, the trendy try hards never last long anyway because for something to be trendy, somebody needs to have done it first. Which band would you most like to tour with and why? We would love to tour with Architects because they are one of the few bands we can all agree on in the van so watching them every night would be a rad experience for all! Do you have any other hidden talents, other than your musical skills? When we were in Amsterdam we could have sworn we time travelled but we haven’t done it since. What’s been your biggest achievement as a band so far? Our biggest achievement so far has probably been playing Bloodstock last year. It was unbelievable just doing our thing and having a massive crowd in front of us. We had a rad time watching all of the other bands too! Who has the worst habits in the band and what are they? Matt does for writing songs that are too hard. And finally….why should we come check out your live show? You should come check out the Elithia experience live because we try and put on a real show, not the one that you’ve seen before loads of times with different bands doing the same things and the same moves. You’ll come out of one of our shows feeling better than you did when you got a toy out of a cereal box as a kid... Ha, remember that? ZAN LAWTHER
