Thanks for picking up the April 2015 issue of Dorset Music Magazine, your one stop guide to the best music in the county and beyond. This month we bring you music for a good cause, the story behind the awesome Teddy Rocks Music Festival in Blandford. Also this month we chat to Wolf Alice and Lower Than Atlantis, both of whom are at the Old Firestation this April. We catch up with Hampshire metalcore globetrotters Bury Tomorrow who are set to level the Sound Circus and we ask some silly questions to Zoax who are hitting The Anvil soon. And last but definitely not least, in a first for Devon Music, we speak to an alien about coffee, The Royal Albert Hall and why he’s chosen Bournemouth for conquest! All this plus previews, listings and announcements from all of the best venues and events in the Dorset area.

TEDDY ROCKS music festival returns to Blandford, Dorset on 1, 2, 3, 4 May 2015 at The Greyhound, in the heart of the town. The fourth Teddy Rocks Festival continues on its mission to raise thousands of pounds to help children fighting cancer. The festival does this by showcasing over 26 live rock bands from originals, to covers, to tributes on a stunning outdoor stage. Alongside this there will be over 40 acoustic acts performing on the newly improved second stage during the four day event. All proceeds made at the festival from ticket sales, merchandise and donations goes straight towards making a difference to sick children’s lives. Last year saw Teddy Rocks Festival raise over £15,000 in one weekend, bringing the total of the festival’s three-year history to over £26k. In memory of Ted Newton, who tragically lost his fight to a rare bone cancer at the age of 10, in June 2010. To date Teddy20 has raised over £110,000, making a huge difference to a lot of children and their families. Tickets for the festival are £6 per day or £20 for the weekend + extra for shuttle buses. Available online from www.dorset-music.com and The Greyhound, Market Place, Blandford Forum, Dorset DT11 7EB. Tickets will also be available during the weekend on the gate and the shuttle bus services are available on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday; For further information please view our website http://www.teddy20.co.uk/
ANY TRAVEL BUNDLE TICKET PURCHASED FROM DORSET-MUSIC.COM
GIVES YOU THE CHANCE TO WIN A T-SHIRT WHICH WILL BE GIVEN TO YOU ON THE DAY AT TICKET EXCHANGE
Official Teddy Rocks T-Shirts will also be on sale from 28 February, available to purchase from The Greyhound, Blandford and online for £15. This event would not be possible without the support from The Greyhound, Basement Hire, Resn8, The Blandford School, Sunrise Motors, The Impressive Group, CPH Scaffolding, Area 55 tattoo studio, Benjamin O’Brien, Dorset Music Magazine and all the bands who play over the weekend and all of our volunteers.
FEATURE First things first, how do you take your coffee? Yesss, fetid human...I like my coffee like I like my coffee. Black and hateful. I use the taste to define the coming day, bitter and full of embarrassment and regret. My mind is fuelled by the rescourful antagonism of my fight against myself. Coffee fuels my self loathing and thus, my ability to transcend the mundane social norms and into everlasting awkwardness. So yeah, black. Has our coffee here on earth improved since your last tasting? My tendency is to ingest it until I need to vomit, then I clear a space for lunch. I also felt the insignificance of the brew was just a great way to insist on perfection. Asking for perfect coffee is like asking for the pinkest black, it’s all intergalactic bullshit. It tastes like a hobos anus at the best of time. The secret is this: the ultimate cup of coffee is actually tea. I’m searching for a new instant coffee, do you have any recommendations? Grind your fears into a powder, sprinkle liberally with an inability to confront personal issues and serve in the skull of your vanquished foe. Barring that, Nescafé or some shit... Who knows? Again, the prerequisite is bitter and hateful. But also surprisingly mild... Like hot water with a brown crayon melted in it. Why have you selected Bournemouth as the starting point for this particular voyage? Because like I, it appears to be ‘born’ in the ‘mouth’ of the infinite! Haha... I kid I kid... I do it for the beach frazzled boobies. Please come to the show or I will be mortally embarked and with resort of more self deprecating heavy metal... God knows you’ve got enough of that. I choose Bournemouth because I crave the love of aquatic birds. What is your favourite thing about Bournemouth? Primary coloured balloons, aloft in the pristine skies, screaming woeful tales of innocence lost. The sighs of heavily chested young lasses as they watch knobbly kneed men in ill fitting speedos strut their latent homosexuality for all to see. The despondent mothers of underplayed baristas, glumly agreeing with their flippant sons that the band in question was better before they had mainstream success. And ice cream. They have yummy ice cream there...
DORSET MUSIC | APRIL 2015
How do you plan to defeat the Royal Albert Hall? I shall conquer it in the ways of my ancestors...with diligence, antagonism and utter desperation. My legacy shall be complete upon bringing my sense of awkward musicality to the esteemed halls of the Royal Albert. I shall make it my bitch, and then realize that it actually owned my soul in the first place. My phasers are set on ‘odd’ What essential items do you carry with you on your missions? The planet smasher, two tubes of tomato paste, a flask of oregano oil, my favorite nudey magazine, and four hundred tiny humanoid parasites that tell me repeatedly that my dad didn’t really hate me... He just projected his own insecurities. What do you miss most from Ziltodia when you’re on tour? My sexual option and my studio in Which I create reams of fractal absurdity. The creatures that inhabit the blue desert outside my door and the rainstorms of liquid methane. Fractal time bending and probably antiques roadshow... Have you heard of Devin Townsend and if so, what do you think of his music? I think if he can get past his need for validation and be strong enough to admit he is f**king sick of playing rock music, he could do well. He just needs to stop doing adolescent bullshit, and start to compose for symphonies and play beautiful quiet music instead of confusing his incredibly tolerant audience with musically masturbatory metaphors about his own repressed adolescence. He needs to be strong enough to choose what’s right for him rather than what his fear of going broke dictates. What do you like to do to unwind when you’re not destroying other planets? I usually beg Mrs Ziltoid for a toothy blowjob and then sulk when it doesn’t happen. Either that or make furniture out of driftwood and play bass guitar in front of repeats of ‘How it’s made’ We heard a rumour that you are, in fact, a puppet. Do you have any comment on this? It’s all so meta. A puppet controlling a puppet is just a vessel for communication with the divine universal geometry. It’s all of no significance, the hope is that the process resonates in eternity.

2014 proved a breakthrough year for this London quartet, following the release of their hugely acclaimed Creature Songs EP. Sold out headline shows throughout the country and packed festival slots at Glastonbury, Reading / Leeds and Bestival, amongst many other festival appearances, all culminating in the band being named on the long list for the BBC Sound of 2015 and winning Best Breakthrough Artist at the recent UK Festival Awards. Go team! And they show no signs of taking their feet off the pedal in 2015. In January they managed to fly out to Australia for a bunch of massive shows there, then the band holed-up in the studio to work on their debut album. It was at this point that we thought we’d better get in there quick if we wanted to have words with this busy band of bees. Luckily the wonderful Ellie Roswell managed to find a few moments to speak to us about how excited she was about heading to the USA, Europe and finally back to the UK for the run of shows we’re all eagerly waiting for now... You’re just back from the magical land down under, how was that? It was amazing. It was our first time over there and despite a horrific journey it was amazing. Good crowds, good weather, it was lovely. And you’re literally just about to fly over to the USA for a few headline shows, are you excited about that? Yeah I’m so excited. It will be our first headline shows in America and our first time in LA and New York. I don’t really know what to expect but it should be a nice surprise hopefully. Have you played in the US before? Well we played SXSW Festival last year and that’s as far as it goes. And then you’re heading to Europe with Alt-J, how did that come about? We have the same management and they were playing a show in Paris where their supports dropped out so our manager asked us to fill in. So we drove down there and they were really nice guys and we got talking to them, they really enjoyed our show and we really enjoyed theirs and they asked us to come out on tour with them. Is there anywhere you’re particularly looking forward to playing out there? Yeah, everywhere really. I love Paris. I love Berlin and there’s loads of places I’ve never been before that I’m excited to see like Vienna and Oslo and places like that. And THEN you’re coming back for a run of headline shows in the UK, do you ever stop touring? Apparently not! This is a new thing for us. We’re used to doing long tours but having long breaks in between them so God knows how we’ll survive but I think it’s a good thing and probably a good sign. Do you feel differently about headline shows than support slots? Yeah of course, there’s way more pressure to deliver at your own shows because people have paid money and taken the time to come and see YOU. If they don’t like you in a support slot they’ve not really lost out because they’ve still got the band they came to see left to see. If you suck as the headline band then you’re in for it really! And all these shows are happening whilst you mix your debut album – how’s that going? Good. Pretty nerve-wracking but it’s sounding good and I’m really excited for everyone to hear it.
Dorset MUSIC |April 2015
Can we expect a mixture of new songs and songs we’ve already heard? I think some people will have heard songs if they’ve seen us live and there’s a few songs that people will definitely know but I’d say 90% is new material. Your EP Creature Songs was a bit of a smash hit last year, in fact the whole of last year was a bit of a smash hit for you – what was your particular highlight? It feels like a long time ago so it’s good to get some new music out as soon as possible. I’ve really enjoyed being in the studio both times, especially recording Creature Songs as we were in Brussels and it was our first experience going away and recording music. I liked going to America and SXSW and really all the festivals were great. You got to play some amazing festivals too, what was your favourite and are there any you’re particularly gunning for this year? I’d like to play all the American festivals like Coachella, they all seem cool. Last year we really enjoyed playing Benacassim because it was hot, and it was night time and there was a big crowd which was kind of unexpected as we’d had a really gruelling journey. But obviously it was incredible to play Reading/Leeds and Glastonbury and all the big ones as well. What’s it like being the girl in a van full of boys? It’s alright! It’s not really a thing. It’s never nice to do long, massive journeys. Last year we drove from Berlin to Manchester and it was my birthday and it was about 40 degrees and I was like, this is NOT how I want to spend my birthday….but then you get off and do a show and it’s all worth it. But I don’t really care that they’re boys, they’re nice boys! For those that might not have had the pleasure of seeing you live yet, what can we expect from your shows? You can expect lots of energy, lots of fun and a mixture of moods. Some emotional, some y’know, stupid. I’m excited to see what it’s like myself to be honest! We’re learning new songs at the moment so y’know, it might be shit……but at least then you get a good laugh haha! WORDS: ZAN LAWTHER

Out of the three skills that Spiderman has, being able to crawl up things, being able to shoot out webs and being incredibly agile, which would you like to see him ditch and what would you replace it with? Well if someone said to me that they could do those three things I would be the least impressed with being incredibly agile. So let’s get rid of that and now instead Spidey has the power to transform into a dragon, who then goes on to find Jon Snow’s ridiculously irritating deadpan face and blows fire into it. If you had one last day on this earth would you rather do 50 adrenaline-pumping things that could kill you instantly, such as skydiving or bungee jumping, or 1 thing that was rather mundane but sentimental? Well if the first one of 50 things kills me, that’s pretty shit. UNLESS!!!!!!! one of these things is me headlining Wrestlemania’s main event against Stone Cold Steve Austin, who then goes on to stone cold stun me right out of this life. What....a.....way.....to....go. Would you rather have a photographic memory that can only retain disgusting thoughts for life or have a 1 minute memory where you constantly introduce yourself to everyone? If I am still in ZO/\X, then constantly introducing will do just fine. The lads in the band could control me because they would know the situation and could then use it to our advantage such as those awkward moments of when bands meet each other for the first time. I would go on to then be known as “The Icebreaker”. Great wrestling name if I do say so myself. What would you most like to see David Attenborough do a voiceover for that’s unrelated to nature? An audio introduction to every live ZO/\X show. What can fans expect from your live show? A David Attenborough audio introduction. Who in the band would make the best girl? Douglas Alexander Wotherspoon, why? LOOOOONNNNGGGG HAAAAAAAAIR. What’s the best thing about being in a band? Fighting and cuddling. If you had to cover a nursery rhyme, which one would it be? Wheels On The Bus, BIIIIG TUNE. What’s the worst thing about being in a band? Not originally starting out as a nursery rhyme cover’s band.

Are you looking forward to the April 2015 tour and the rest that might come after it? We’ve recently come off a tour for 21 days, no days off. We had four days to recuperate then straight on this tour so it’ll be nice to go home and hang out for a little bit, we’re pretty busy all year! Are you guys mostly touring at the moment or do you have other stuff planned in? We’re basically doing our fourth studio album, we go into preproduction literally straight after this tour. We don’t really have much time to relax but it’s all good, it’s part of the job. Are you guys hitting up the festival circuit as well this year? Yeah, we’re taking like a little downer this year as our album won’t come out until the latter part of this year/early next year, so it’s kind of like this is the build-up year for us, and we hit a load of the big festivals last year. So this year we’re kind of like keeping it a bit more low key, just to build it back up and get into some territories we haven’t been in before, or haven’t been to for a long time. It’ll all gear up to next year being the biggest year of our band’s career. It should be pretty insane and exciting. You must be quite excited about writing the album. That’s got to give you that buzz. It’s a stressful process but it should be pretty sweet. It’s one of those things where we all know what we want to sound like and where we want the album to take us, so it should be relatively painless. I imagine it’s just a progression of yourselves so far, you’ve got quite an individual sound... Yeah you know, we all grew up listening to metalcore music. We grew up listening to the Killswitch Engages, the As I Lay Dyings, the Darkest Hours’, they were our favourite bands in the world. That’s kind of where we gear our direction. But there’s a new school kind of edge on it, if you will, but yeah. We all know what we want to do with it, we’re just five dudes that want to play our instruments; we don’t have any backing tracks, we don’t have any fakery or trickery, it’s just five dudes making music. Has it taken you a little bit by surprise how well you’ve been received outside of metal? You’ve had national radio play, and doing a lot of things that scream heavy bands don’t tend to get at the level you’re doing it. It’s pretty sweet to be honest, it’s nice to see that the metal scene in the UK is striving so much that corporate companies that maybe would only go for mainstream artists or rock music have taken notice of this abrasive, heavy, in your face kind of music. For me it’s a complete

success for bands like Architects or While She Sleeps, and Bring Me The Horizon, who have absolute global domination, you know, and it’s nice to see that we’re a part of that British front of music. It’s awesome, and we’ll continue to fly our flag. The thing is we’re not afraid to go for those offers of those mainstream festivals or radio slots because we know that we’ll do a good job, and we know that there’ll be enough of a fan base for it to take hold. Some bands I think are maybe a little scared to do those mainstream things, because they feel it may well backfire when they play them, or they might be received badly. But we’re never scared of things like that, you have to just play what you do and stay true to yourself. Have you had any of those things which have gone appallingly wrong? It’s one of those things. I mean, this tour is kind of a classic example of it, in that it’s a very rock based tour, and it’s quite a strange line up. I mean you’ve got bands like Don Broco and We Are The In Crowd and Young Guns that are on the lighter side, a bit more mainstream rocky kind of feel, but it seems to work, man. It’s really cool to see a newer generation of kids that might never have thought about liking abrasive and heavy, pissed off music. This tour for us has really been a success. It’s the most well received tour we’ve ever done, it’s crazy. The ages range from 11 years old, to like thirties. To see 11 and 12 year olds into this kind of music just harks back to when I was younger, listening to people like Papa Roach Limp Bizkit, and Slipknot. So for me it’s crazy to be part of that and part of their life when it comes to introducing them to metal music. We’re not a ‘saviour band’ that’s preaching a message, but we’re a band that can hopefully be a stepping stone into these kids really immersing themselves in the metal genre. Have you had any stories from tour in the last year that have been a bit weird? We don’t go too crazy if I’m honest, we’re quite a boring band in that sense. First day on this tour, Brandon from Beartooth decided to get completely buck-naked and try to climb in our guitarist’s and singer’s bunks. That was the first travelling day on the tour, so that was pretty intense for a first day. But we’ve known those guys and met them before so... Did he succeed? He tried, but he didn’t get in, no, he was kicked out. But this tour has been great, it;s the first tour we’ve been on where we know 95% of the crew and every band. We grew up with Don Broco, and Young Guns. We don’t know We Are The In Crowd, but that’s the only band we don’t know. Beartooth we toured with on Kaleb’s old band Attack! Attack!, and a lot of the members of Beartooth are made up of the crew from Attack! Attack! It’s quite sweet that we just get toi have two weeks with our friends really. WORDS: MIKE JAMES

It’s no secret that at the beginning of 2014 things looked pretty dicey for alternative Watford lads Lower Than Atlantis. You’d have been forgiven for thinking that perhaps this was a band that had had their day. In fact, it’s likely the band themselves would have agreed with you. But luckily for us (and them) they decided to make one more album before jacking it in and getting ‘normal’ jobs like the rest of us. And bejeesus are we glad they did! The Lower Than Atlantis boys smashed their way through 2014 with their chart topping self-titled album, hit single ‘Here We Go’, a slot on NME’s stage at Reading and Leeds, and a fresh new signing to Sony Records - what better way to celebrate with then, than a mostly sold out headline tour? 2015 sees them riding high as they head off around the UK this month for a string of dates at a selection of completely sold out venues. We caught up with the cheeky frontman himself Mike Duce just before they jetted off to Australia for Soundwave Festival… What would you be doing if you weren’t in Lower Than Atlantis? I could be a bricklayer. Or I could kill myself. One of those two. Who’s your personal musical hero? Aghh I couldn’t pick just one person. Would say Kurt Cobain, but he’s dead, so Dave Grohl. He’s a good musician and a nice guy. It’s great to see he’s so grounded also.
Sounds like torture! Who’s got an expansive discography? Foo Fighters - I like them and they’ve got a lot of albums to pick from, and they were the first band to pop into my head. Four successful albums in, how much pressure do you feel under to produce something equally as good for album number 5? I don’t know really, it’s occurred to me a couple of times though. This is our most successful album to date, and we have thought it might just be good luck. All you can do as an artist is make the best music you possibly can. As long as we know we’ve done a good job that’s enough for us. What are the plans for the next album, and have you started writing it yet? We start writing the new record after we come back from Australia. We have so much touring coming up so we’re utilising our time as best we can. We’ve got a couple of ideas, but no demos or finished songs yet. You guys are touring the UK in April, with many of the venues already sold out, what can Bournemouth expect? Yeah, some of the shows had to be upgraded! Bournemouth can expect a bloody good night and a few beers! What’s your absolute dream to achieve? We already got to play shows with Blink 182 but I do have one - if I got a phone call to tour with Foo Fighters I would be very happy and would shit a brick. That’s the dream.
Rock Sound Magazine voted ‘Lower Than Atlantis’ their #1 album of 2014, that must make you feel pretty awesome, right? Yeah, it does feel good, but we don’t feel like we need validation. All you can do is make music you’d wanna hear from someone else, and hope others like it too.
What’s the plan for the rest of 2015? We haven’t got one, we leave that to our management and agent. Our plan is to have fun, play music, and have fun. The way it should be.
If you could only listen to ONE band for the rest of your life who would it be?

LOWER THAN ATLANTIS
www.rock-regeneration.co.uk Last month I found myself feeling slightly underdressed at the Swing Unlimited Jazz club at the Riviera Hotel in Bournemouth. The club are happy to put on artist’s who want to push the musical boundaries and stretch the imagination. I was there to see a rare gig by Bournemouth’s finest unclassifiable band the Momo Tempo Electric Pops Orchestra. Lead singer Timo Peach makes no apologies for taking over the club that evening and even stated the aim of the Momo Tempo Electric Pops Orchestra is to “Drive a juggernaut of Pop straight through the middle of the Jazz Club”. The band features a three piece brass section: Trombone, Trumpet, Saxophone, a drummer, a percussionist, as well as Timo himself on keyboards and vocals. The music is well rooted in the 80’s with a modern addictive twist that immediately gets straight to the happy part of your brain. If you crossed the madcap music of “Yello” with “Divine Comedy”, with a sprinkling of Latino beats and a bit of Kraftwerk you’d come somewhere close to where Momo Tempo are coming from. I thoroughly enjoyed my night and might venture back there sometime in the future with hopefully smarter attire. On the other end of the music scale I spent the whole of Saturday 7th March on the Southampton University campus for the Takedown Festival. There were five stages which hosted a massive amount of new and established alternative bands. I was absolutely made up to see InMe play the whole of the brilliant “Overgrown Eden” album in full on the main stage. It is now 12 years old and sounds as fresh and original as it did when it was first released. “Moose Blood”, “Dirt” , “Allusondrugs and “Creeper” were all new discoveries for me and I can more than recommend seeing them live as they all put in really memorable performances. It was with a mixture of emotions that I watched brilliant Welsh band “The Blackout” who as usual put on a fantastically energetic show, but this was to be Momo Tempo one of the last shows before they all spilt up for good. They are a band who I have seen many times and not seen anything less than 100% from each performance. The whole day though really tiring for an old man like me was well organised and gave fans a great insight of what new music to expect to see for the summer festival season to come.

Who are you and what do you do in the band? Collectively we are aAnd? Individually we are three people who play instruments and/or do vocals in aAnd? Sometimes we are people that are close to aAnd? And happen to be given instruments. How did you guys get together? We have all been, or are in, far more sensible projects and wanted to do something that was without greed, not pretentious and with a mind to create escapism. How did you pick your band name? The band name is probably the most complex aspect of the band. We wanted something that creates anticipation, is instantly recognisable as a brand and also gives the reader a sense of what’s to come. What comes is usually sporadic, unplanned, unpractised and yet professional and well executed. …oh and we are always at the top of every list…
Tell us 5 things that we should know about you guys? 1. We wear skin tight figure hugging spandex onesies (for the ladies) 2. Music is brutal 3. We have no interest in telling anyone what to do - No “I want to see a circle pit” at our shows. 4. We don’t like greedy people 5. We travel light – Possibly the easiest band to put on and sound-check Why should we come see you live? Entertainment, morphsuits, musical brutality, crotch hugging outfits and Jaffa Cakes
What do you guys have coming up? New album in progress, a gig at the Sound Circus on the 28th May, more holiday tunes (check out our YouTube channel to see the current ones), more music videos, more Merchandise, new website coming soon. Were also currently booking festivals for the summer and have European shows in the works. If you could tour with any band, who would it be? We love many bands but what constitutes a good evening’s entertainment for us is not necessarily loads of metal bands. If we were to tour with anybody they’d have to be very different from us. Lady Gaga maybe?
