It appears that Skindred’s trajectory is currently set permanently to UP. Smashing their way into 2014 with the release of the eagerly anticipated new album Kill the Power they have been rampaging around the world slaying crowds with their intense and unique blend of rap, metal and reggae. It’s difficult to place this band into any genre. Their ethos is almost entirely about having a good time. They’re here to make you bounce and having honed their skills over the past decade (and then some!) we think it’s fair to say that Skindred are one of, if not possibly, THE best live band on the UK circuit today. If you’re heading to a festival this year, chances are you’ll encounter the joy of a Skindred pit. Riding high from their best ever Download set (main stage, Friday, it was epic) they’ve already done NASS, Redfest, Rock Im Ring, Traffic Jam and this month will be hitting Boardmasters, ROCKEM and V-Rox, closely followed by their first ever appearance at Bestival and as if that wasn’t enough, they’re off out on tour with crazy hair metallers Steel Panther next year too! But first, they’re warming themselves up at none other than Bournemouth’s Sound Circus. Absolutely guaranteed to be an all-out sweat-fest we simply cannot wait, so we caught up with drummer Arya Goggin to talk all things festival, all things Wembley and all things Panther… Things really seem to be kicking off for you guys. How have you found the reaction to Kill the Power? It’s been amazing. It’s our first album to get a chart position; we reached number 13, which is just amazing. It’s weird because we’ve been sitting on the album for about a year and then it’s out and it’s all happened so quickly. We started with our tour in January, which started in Southampton and it was the best tour we’ve ever done with loads of sell out shows. Then we went on to Download which was amazing and then it’s all still going, there’s so much still to do. And then we’re off on tour with Steel Panther early next year!
Download has been the obvious highlight and it’s been my favourite UK festival show we’ve ever done. We had a great slot on the main stage and it was ram-packed. We couldn’t believe it, just how many people had come out to see us. We’ve been in Europe a lot too and there’s definitely some highlights there, particularly in Germany, their festivals are always great. And then in August we’re headlining at the Polish Woodstock which is definitely going to be one to beat. We’ve played it before to nearly half a million people and it’s nuts. There are relays that go on for a mile away from the stage and it’s free, so everyone turns out!
Skindred have been around for a while, and whilst musically you found your sound way back when it’s taken some time for the mainstream to catch on. Does it finally feel like it’s coming together? I think that when you start a rock or metal or punk band you’re not really thinking about mainstream. There are some bands like Limp Bizkit, or Korn or Bullet for my Valentine that have been accepted into the mainstream but Skindred weren’t really like that. It still isn’t now I don’t think! We’ve just carried on doing what we do, we’ve never gone away. I think if you just keep going and you show some tenacity in this business it becomes contagious, like a smile. Every band has its journey, they continue or they plateau and we’ve just continued. It’s not plateaued. We’re still going and that’s really cool. You’ve played a whole load of festivals so far this year – any stand out favourites?
You’re coming to Bournemouth to warm yourselves up for Bestival. That’s a pretty different style of festival to the ones you’re used to – how do you think they’ll react to Skindred? I think they’re gonna love it. We’ve done festivals of this sort before; we did Beautiful Days a few years ago. It’s an eclectic mix of bands, like Glastonbury and I think we’d fit really well into Glastonbury. We have fun. It’s a big party and we’ve got a main stage slot so we think everyone will love it. We wouldn’t want to be restricted to just rock and metal festivals.
Dorset MUSIC | AUGUST 2014
Do you enjoy the challenge of introducing yourselves to potential new fans? Yeah – that’s the challenge isn’t it? I like people not having a preconceived idea of what a band is going to be like. It’s dangerous to try and pigeonhole bands into one category or another. You always have
SKINDRED
FEATURE to say this is ‘reggae metal’ or ‘ragga metal’ or whatever but I really like it when people are introduced without the sell first. Just listen to the music and if you like it, great. I love the accomplishment of playing music to someone who’s never heard it before. I like the surprise.
Do you think there’s a lot of crossover between Panther and Skindred fans? There is. Definitely. They’re there for the entertainment, pure and simple. There’s no ‘scene’ with Steel Panther. All their fans will love us and all our fans will love them.
Sound Circus is pretty small as venues go, does the show change at all when you bring it to a smaller stage? Not really. I mean, the production changes a bit but that’s just lights and things, the performance stays exactly the same. When we headline we get to play for a bit longer too, which is always nice haha! We just do what we do, so you’ll get the full Skindred festival experience, just in a small, sweaty room. That’s where we started, playing pubs and clubs and that’s where it’s the most fun.
What about new bands rising through the ranks at the moment – is there anyone we should be checking out? You should definitely check out this Canadian band called Pup who are amazing. They’re playing at Reading. Check out the video for Reservoir. I always give a shout out to my boys in Idiom, they’re just about to go out on tour with Sikth in October so make sure you see them. And Collisions too, they’re a young band coming out of Brighton that I really like.
What’s not a small stage is Wembley. How did the Steel Panther support slot come about? It was really random. I mean, we’re a headline band now and we haven’t supported anyone for a while but support slots are great for engaging with new fans and we thought, who would we like to go out with? Steel Panther are similar to us in that their fans are really open minded. They play their music and have a great time and it’s all about putting on a great show. And then Andy Copping (Download festival organiser) was putting the show together and we met the guys and we think they’re great. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun.
And finally, you’ve been hugely busy – when do you get a break and what will you be doing to relax? Ooooh…..my next time off is after Bestival. I get two weeks off and I’m going to Los Angeles and Las Vegas in September so that’s what I’ll be doing to relax. I’m looking forward to that. WORDS: ZAN LAWTHER

If you haven’t yet experienced the brilliance of Don Broco frankly, you must have been living under a rock. Well cemented as Radio 1 favourites and widely regarded as the charming, cheeky and almost too good looking champions of rock they’ve been all over the place this past year. A sell out headline tour towards the end of last year nicely capped off the success of debut album Priorities and a string of MASSIVE festival appearances. These boys shine on the live stage and are notorious for their highly interactive, boisterous and athletic antics in the pit. Currently in the studio recording their much awaited second album, on hearing the exciting news that they would be playing an intimate show at Bournemouth’s Sound Circus we decided to catch up the Broco to get you the lowdown on what’s coming next... Your rise to mainstream success has been a long time in coming, how does it feel hearing your songs being played on Radio 1, and finding yourself playing at big festivals? Is it still all a bit ‘surreal’ right now? Playing bigger festivals hasn’t felt particularly surreal, but we’ve played lots of smaller festivals so we’ve at least had that experience, we had time to prepare and psych ourselves up. Radio on the other hand, I’m not sure I’ll ever get used to. You can be doing normal, mundane things, and then hear yourself on the radio. It’s quite weird, but always exciting. Every time we hear one of our songs we get psyched up, and it’s a little reminder of the cool things we’re doing. Do you think success comes at a price? I guess so, yeah. There’s always a price, it’s just what that price is...what do you give up for it? We’ve seen places we never thought we’d see through touring, but we don’t see so much of our friends, or get to go out with ‘the boys’. Since school we’ve had this thing where once a year we all get together [with school friends] and go on holiday, and the last 2 years we haven’t been able to do that. It does sometimes feel like we’re slipping away from these people we’ve known for years. Promo schedules, recording, touring all mean less free time. We’re all desperate to know…. what can we expect from the new album? We’ve taken the Don Broco model and super-sized it…. bigger riffs, catchier melodies, massive sing alongs, and songs that have a message people can really relate to. And when do we get the chance to hear it? At this point we hope to release the album at the start of next year, but there will definitely be a couple of new tracks released before the album comes out! Did you find it harder putting together material for the second album than for the first? MUCH harder! We wrote the first record three years ago. All the songs were written in the back of our van while we were on tour, and every song we had written went on the album. It was a real hap-hazard and rapid approach which
DORSET MUSIC | august 2014
luckily worked out for us! This time round we have written far more songs than will actually make it on to the record, and we have been far more meticulous about the writing process. Each song has been pulled apart numerous times and put back together again until we have found the perfect arrangement. Each song has undergone months of scrutiny and re-working before we have even taken it to the studio. With the second record, a band can’t afford to mess it up. So we have taken our time to make sure we have done everything in our power to make it perfect in our eyes. As you are already aware, the music industry is a tough cookie to crack, what would be your top 3 tips to a band starting out? I’d say 1) Write lots and lots of songs. Lots of good songs. You can’t write too many songs, only 1 in 20 might actually be really good. 2) Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Friends, family, anyone you know who maybe can help get you a gig or put you in touch with someone. Everyone needs support. I don’t know a single successful band that has done it without help of some kind. 3) Play live. Don’t hide away hoping someone’s going to come pluck you out of obscurity, you’ve gotta get out there. So you’re playing Reading/Leeds for the fourth year in a row – that must feel pretty amazing….? It’s incredible. We have so much love for that festival. We used to go every year as teenagers, and even worked for the festival when we didn’t have the money to buy a ticket! We feel like we really grew up with Reading and Leeds and that’s why it’s such an important festival to us. Being invited back to play it really is an honour for us. I’ve seen every one of my favourite bands play on those stages, and to be playing there ourselves again really is very humbling. It’s the highlight of our year. What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2014? After Reading and Leeds we will be heading back into the studio to finish recording the record so we can get some new material out ASAP! FEATURE
Undoubtedly one of the biggest girl bands in the UK, the multimillion selling pop group, are now set to continue their remarkable run of success since forming in 2008. Last year the girls signed a deal with Mercury / Island Def Jam in the US and spent six months travelling back and forth from London, L.A. and New York to film the E! reality TV series ‘Chasing The Saturdays’ which debuted on both sides of the Atlantic earlier this year and is now transmitting around the world from Europe to Asia. Mollie, Vanessa, Una, Rochelle and Frankie are currently completing their fifth album release on which they have worked with some stellar names from Rodney Jerkins [Destiny’s Child, Spice Girls, Britney Spears, Whitney Houston] to Diane Warren [Celine Dion, Toni Braxton, Jessie J, Aerosmith). The album will be released this autumn. But not happy to wait around until then they’ve bucked all trends by releasing their Greatest Hits album whilst arguably at the height of their career. And now they’re off on tour, hitting the UK with their very own slice of feel good pop party fun. We were lucky enough to grab a few minutes with the fabulous (and really rather lovely) Frankie to talk all things tour, babies and what’s in line for the Saturdays in the future… This is the first time you girls have been on tour since 2011, what can we expect? Well, we’ve been desperate to get on tour for ages so we’re really excited. We hope it’s going to be one big party for everyone, being that it’s our greatest hits, so it’ll be song after song that everyone knows with fantastic costumes and the whole lot. Hopefully it’ll be a great big celebration of seven years of The Saturdays. Speaking of costumes, have you got those all picked out yet? Not yet – but we’re dying to start working on them and see what’s gonna happen. Do you all have different tastes? Are there ever disagreements about what you should wear? Yeah we do but I think we’re really lucky to all be able to find things that suit our styles individually whilst coming together as a group. Like, I’m not much of a sparkly girl, I don’t want glitter and sequins but they look so great under the lights.
DORSET MUSIC | AUGUST 2014
I suppose it’s hard to look over-dressed on stage though isn’t it? You need to be attention grabbing… Oh I’d always rather be under-dressed but yeah, it’s fun to dress up and it looks great on stage. You have had so many singles. How did you choose which ones you wanted on the album? We were really lucky cos we managed to get them all on! It’s great because we had the perfect number for an album so we’re really happy. Do you hope the album release and tour might send one of the singles back into the charts? Ooooh….I don’t know! I haven’t thought about that! Well, we’ve got another album planned for later in the year and there are more singles scheduled for release too so we’re all looking forward to those, but yeah, it would be kinda nice if one of the old ones got back into the charts.
THE SATURDAYS
FEATURE You’ve said before that no one tells the band what to do and that all of you are very different but are always yourselves. Do you think the live shows give fans a better view of all your personalities? I hope so. I think although we do a lot of dance routines and it’s such a big production, we do get a say in it all and we get to talk to the audience in between the songs. We all have different personalities so hopefully that comes across. Do you have to script what you say on stage? We try not to script it too much although we do have to sit down and work out who speaks when and between which song, otherwise you end up with all five of us yabbering away at the crowd all at the same time! When you’re on tour do you have any really specific requirements or any diva demands? Oh we are SO boring! Sometimes we have cheese, that’s quite nice… and we always ask for lemon and honey backstage. We always ask for our catering to be healthy but the crew are always surrounding us with cakes, sweets and bad things so it’s hard to stay away from the doughnuts but other than that, we’re really boring and don’t make any ridiculous demands. We don’t even have any alcohol on our rider! So you don’t request a room full of fluffy white kittens at each venue? Oh no! Maybe we should! Maybe we should ask for something totally ridiculous and see if anyone actually did it! Some of you have kids now, are they coming with you on tour? We were talking about that the other day and we suddenly realised they’ll all be too tired to stay up late and watch the actual show, so they’re all coming to the big dress rehearsal we’ll have before we leave. And then they’ll be there for parts of the tour.
DORSET MUSIC | AUGUST 2014
Is it difficult to balance your new home life with being a pop star? Yes and no. I mean, we’ve always worked hard to balance our home lives but we’re really lucky with the kids cos they can come to work with us. Haha, it used to be dogs and now it’s babies! We’ve just stepped it up a notch! Are we going to see any special guests on tour? I don’t know. It would be wicked to have Sean Paul come out and do his rap in ‘What About Us’ wouldn’t it? But nothing’s been decided yet so you’ll have to wait and see. Watch this space. There are rumours that this is the last outing for The Saturdays, is there any truth to that? I think those rumours come with the territory of a greatest hits album. Like I said earlier, we’ve got more singles and another album planned so there’s plenty more to come from us. You’re not getting rid of us that easy! We’re about to hit festival season good and proper. Do you girls like playing festivals? We love them. We’ve played loads, Oxygen in Ireland and last year we headlined V Festival, although I was far too fat and pregnant to do it but the girls had a great time. There’s always the worry that we’re too pop and no one will come to see us but the tent is always rammed and people just dance and sing along. I think it’s nice to have a break from it all really and to have different things to do. Are you sticking in the UK for this tour or are there plans to take it abroad? We’re staying in the UK this time. There’s nothing better than doing it here so we’re sticking with that. We can’t wait. Priding itself on being ‘family friendly’ there are many free activities on site for young people of all ages to participate in, including inflatable bungee runs, lazer quest, human demolition and zorbing. There is also the opportunity to watch exclusive unplugged backstage acoustic acts from some of the artists.

No doubt you will have heard of Turin Brakes, if not only for the reason that their career has lasted longer than many bands can comprehend in their dizziest daydreams. Even if you haven’t, you will certainly know a plentitude of tracks that Turin Brakes have pinned their name to – the likes of The OC, Smallville, and Waterloo Road have all featured a Brakes record or two in their soundtracks over the years. Originally hailing from South London they have a sound with something distinctly British about it, all wobbling acoustic guitar with Lightning Seeds-esque lyrics that scream of seasides, sunshine and showers, making them perfect for the sunny South festival circuit. Dorset Music’s Hayley Taulbut caught up with guitarist Olly Knights to chat all things Purbeck. How are you feeling about playing Purbeck Folk Festival? We’re really happy because we like playing festivals. Particularly smaller festivals, the appreciation is that much higher and greater for what you do, because you don’t get lost amongst the loads of other bands playing. We prefer the vibe for smaller festivals too – it’s less commercial and you get a greater sense of appreciation. How does playing a festival compare to your own headline shows and which do you prefer? Well, they’re entirely different things. In our case, you get two completely different sides to us as a band. At our own shows you have the luxury of being able to play what you like and to build up your set to a raucous climax which just gets bigger and bigger. It’s more of an unknown at a festival – because it’s not necessarily our fan base, you have to play with that in mind. The energy has to come from you. We like to think that we’ve been around long enough to know what works at a festival and what doesn’t. As a band whose career has spanned way over a decade, how do you feel that you have changed or developed? Yeah it’s been 15 years this year that we have been ‘officially’ together as a band. There have been lots of changes over the years, but the fact that we’re still playing at all is a big thing. Many bands kinda ‘run out of road’ but we’re still ploughing on. As long as we’re excited by what we do then we’ll carry

on. It also helps that we have such a dedicated and devoted fan base – we don’t have the biggest fan base in the universe but it’s enough to get us through and to keep us doing what we’re doing. We have a real strong identity in the fan base too, what it means to be a Turin Brakes fan has a lot of associated things with it, and we feel really lucky to have them, because without them, we wouldn’t survive. Over your vast career, what would you say has been your personal highlight? My God, let me try to think of one thing [laughs]. You know what, the highlight was playing at Shepherd’s Bush about 6 months ago. We’ve played in London loads of times and it’s always a bit of a homecoming for us, but I genuinely feel that it was the best show we’ve ever done, and to still feel like that after all this time is a great experience. Playing lots has meant that we have loads of experience and we’ve worked hard, which for us has paid off. If you didn’t have a career in music, what occupation would you have? Personally, I would be a cameraman making nature documentaries in some far flung land. That’s what I was into before Turin Brakes happened. Making records was a bit of a fluke really – I had no desire to get on stage and be stared at by loads of strangers [laughs]. But that’s partly what makes us so lucky. For those readers not familiar with Turin Brakes, how would you epitomise your sound? If you took folk, a tiny bit of hip-hop and Pink Floyd, then smashed it all together, what you’d get is Turin Brakes. Lastly, what can we expect from your live show? I could almost say the same as before, but what really defines our shows is that it’s very much a journey. We don’t just get up there and play 9 or 10 songs, but we want to give an experience. Every crowd you play to is different, which means the show is different. We try to make sure that every set has an identity, what you would hear would be bespoke and unique. It’s difficult to put into words, because often it’s not a pre-recorded or pre-planned thing. It’s more a feeling. Words - Hayley Taulbut

rock regeneration The majority of July has been spent out in the open air and thankfully in the summer sunshine at some of Dorset’s great festivals. If you keep your eyes posted there are a host of small and welcoming festivals out there that suit all pockets that give a diverse selection of great music. The fantastic countryside that we have here in Dorset is just perfect for these sort of events. If you look at the ‘Gigs of the Month’ selection below you will find plenty of Festivals to keep you occupied throughout August.

The first weekend in July always the Christchurch Festival a three day affair that is situated on the banks on the River Stour on Christchurch Quay. A huge team of volunteers get together each year build a huge stage in a marquee ready for a host of great local acts to entertain music fans at a fraction of the cost of major festivals. The proceeds of the festival are all donated to charities of the local Mayor’s choice. This year’s three headliners Included Voodoo Vegas on Friday, who despite a few problems with a few technical issues pulled out a brilliant set of twin guitar classic rock. On Saturday night the progressive side of Christchurch was seen in the form of the near 30 year old Galahad who put in a great set of epic tunes that thrilled their large following of fans. The usual Sunday night headliners Lady Winwoods Maggot pulled the biggest crowd of the weekend. A band who really know how to entertain with a huge set of great originals as well as a few specially reworked covers. The third weekend of July featured the ever growing Roots Revival festival in Lytchett Matravers called the Wonky Donk Festival. It is a small but perfectly formed festival with a very friendly laid back vibe. It is run by local legend Hawkeye Houlihan who brings together a group of well researched acts to this growing genre. There were excellent performances by bands that many of you won’t have heard of such as Grizzly and the Grasshoppers, The Sweetchunks Band, The Jack Ratts, Quinns Quinney, The Doghouse Boat Boys and Curst Sons. I urge you if you have an open mind and want to try something different to check them out. The festival was also blessed with plenty of sunshine and I had the pleasure along with Thomas Taff Morse and Chris Brown to compere the event.

If you would like your band or gig featured here or in Rock Regeneration contact me here : The Ashley Cross annual festival called “Grooves On The Green” chinners@rock-regeneration.co.uk hosted by Conrad Barr of Solid Air was also in July. It featured Wonky Donk a huge amount of local bands over two stages. At just £5 each day for entry it is really great value for money. On the Saturday Festival the headliners were Dorset Music Award winners Peace, Love & Gloves who got people off their picnic blankets and on their feet to dance. The Sunday featured some great performances from Folk storytellers “Wikkaman”, the completely funky “Soulhole” and a bit of traditional ska from local legends “Guns Of Navarone”. Each day the music stopped at 7pm which is ideal for all members of the family. It also allowed me to watch the World cup Final on Sunday!!! What a month July has been roll on August... CHINNERS

BROTHERS
GRIMMER
Following the launch and success of their first album “The Big Red Book Of Nursery Rants”, and their second ‘The Big Blue book of Hairytales’ Brothers Grimmer are revving up for another busy year. Well known around the Bournemouth area already they recently won the Best of Bournemouth competition.
So, who are you and what do you all do in the band? There are five people at the core of Brothers Grimmer, we have (in no particular order); Empup Grimmer, aka Lee Cleary, who takes care of the guitar and the high end frequencies, the main vocals most of the time, the writing/ arranging of the music, the writing of the words, a bit of the production when called for, some technical stuff he can’t explain, half of the transport and THE BEARD; BoBo Grimmer, aka Shawn Wadham, who takes care of the bass and low end frequencies, the backing screams and roars, the writing of the music, more of the production, a lot of technical stuff that he can’t explain, and the other half of the transport. Guru Grimmer, aka Matthew Cleary, who takes care of the drums and all things rhythmic, the arranging and the doing of backing vocals, the writing of the music, and a lot of the promoting and networking through the power of parley and posters. Macko Grimmer, aka Michael Bundell, who takes care of the blistering dance moves, some of the main singist responsibilities, the backing vocals, and the rousing of the audience. Mumma Grimmer, aka Janet Rogers, who takes care of the online presence of the band, the orating with promoters and venues, the writing of the fairy tales and the being THE MUM. There are also a lot of Grimmers behind the scenes; girlfriends, children, family, friends and fans who have all been instrumental in getting us this far, too many to name, but you know who you are. Thanks for all the photos, videos, inspiration and support.
