We all know the name. His bad boy reputation and wayward past precedes him. His previous two albums ‘All Till I’m Dead’ and ‘At Your Inconvenience’ put him on the rap map and in November 2011 when he topped the UK singles charts with ‘Read All About It’, featuring Emeli Sandé on vocals, there was no escaping the endless airplay or tidal wave of critical acclaim. As well as winning awards for Breakthrough Artist Of The Year (BT Digital Music Awards 2010), Best Hip-Hop/Grime Act (MOBO Awards 2010) and Best Dancefloor Filler (Jungle - NME Awards 2012), Professor Green has also been nominated for a number of other awards including the 2012 Brit Award for Best British Male. He keeps his awards at his Nan’s house. Wait, what!?! After a year of ups and downs, Pro Green’s tour was originally scheduled for May but was postponed, which turned out to be good news for everyone on the south coast! He’s got a brand new album ‘Growing Up in Public’ to play for us, as well as an arsenal of classic tracks and he’s chomping at the bit to get back out on stage. We eagerly awaited our chat with the man himself, bracing ourselves for an ego-fuelled wideboy reluctant to answer any questions and were subsequently forced to eat our preconceptions when what we got was an articulate and totally affable young man who went out of his way to make us laugh. We are definitely pro Pro Green. Read on to find out why…
So we obviously all know who you are, but not knowing the side as well, hence the name Professor Green. Old news too many details we did some Wikipedia research... now. You can’t believe a bloody word you read on there, it’s all bullsh*t. It says I went to school in Croydon! Who gave you that name? One of my mates, Jonah - he said something that was really Well we read the story on there about how your whole wrong...I can’t remember what it was, but I corrected him. career started - that you’d gone to a party and just He said ‘what are you, some kind of professor? Professor freestyled. Do you remember what the subject of that Green?’ And I thought ‘ah Professor Green!’ And it just stuck. freestyle was about? Oh god no. Everyone was taking the mickey out of me, If you had any good advice for anyone wishing to follow well everyone was taking the mickey out of each other, your path what would it be? and I was kinda put on the spot and rapped a lyric. My advice is just don’t bother. Work hard at school. Get a That was how it all started. I do remember being quite job. embarrassed and going quite red in the face, swearing to never do it again, but hey ho. Haha, yeah, but do you have any practical advice for someone wanting to do what you do? What was it you did for a job before you discovered you Yeah I do...don’t bother [laughs]. The stress that comes with were good at freestyling? this job, everyone thinks it’s all roses. The real advice would I did some other jobs but I did some naughty stuff on

PROFESSOR GREEN
You’ve now done a lot of collaborations with other artists, is there anyone particularly you’d really like to collab with? Not particularly. I just like things to happen organically. Most of the people I’ve worked with I’ve bumped into, we’ve got on, or we’ve been introduced by someone, or I’ve reached out because I’ve got respect for their talent and stuff’s kinda happened that way. I think it would be too contrived to have a list of people that I wanna work with you know. Bit of a curve ball...what’s your favourite metal song? Metal? Yeah, right. Probably the one genre I couldn’t name a song from. It’s all a bit noisy innit. All a bit subjective. My nan used to call rap ‘talking music’. Who do you think the most currently underrated artist is in the UK right now? I’m gonna go with the Chuckle Brothers. They deserve more props!
be to be realistic. I think a lot of people have very unrealistic expectations, not least of all because of the people that project an image that is far outside of their means, which I think causes problems in many ways of how it affects people. People see you on TV and think you’re made of money. They’ve got no concept of the mechanics behind it, or of what the actual situation is. I don’t do that, I’m not a proper flashy bast*rd like a lot of people. I’ve come from nothing, and a bit of you obviously does want to show that you’ve made some money but I think people sometimes do that in a way that is totally unrealistic. It is just an image. I think people think that if they become successful in like music or film that it is going to absolve them of all their problems. What’s the one thing that people say about you that you dislike the most? Piers Morgan’s wife interviewed me and she was like ‘I was a bit concerned...you’re a big lad, tattoos, getting into all this trouble for this and that blah blah blah, and then a friend of mine interviewed you and said you were gentle.’ Gentle? That really p*ssed me off. [laughs] I get really p*ssed off when people call me nice or gentle. You sound alright to us... F*cking hell, it keeps happening! We’re not entirely sure about the semantics of battle raps, does someone choose a subject? There’s no subjects. I’ve been on radio stations when DJs have thrown subjects at me and I’ve had to rap about them, but there’s no subjects. I don’t freestyle things so much anymore. I got so p*ssed off with the whole freestyle thing. It got to the point where every interview I did they’d be like ‘come on, freestyle’ and it would be like the most sterile environment ever. It couldn’t be any less encouraging, so it got to the point where I was like ‘no’, didn’t feel like doing it anymore. If you could choose anyone in music history, so dead or alive, to battle rap with, who would you choose and what would you freestyle about? Nah, I don’t know. I’m a changed man, I wouldn’t want to offend anyone anymore. I’ve said some horrible, horrible things about people in my time. What’s the worst thing you’ve said to someone during a battle rap then? You haven’t got an STD b*tch, you are one. That was pretty bad. You’re all pals though at the end of it right? Ah no, she was pretty upset.
DORSET MUSIC | DECEMBER 2014
Where have you put your MOBO and NME awards? They’re on my nan’s mantelpiece. Ah that’s a lie, the MOBO is on her mantelpiece, the NME one is tucked away somewhere ‘cus she’s a bit embarrassed because it’s a hand with a finger gesture so she doesn’t keep that one on show, but she has all of my awards, all my discs, everything. Every one of them is just a little thing to make up for all the sh*t I did when she had me in her care. What question have you never been asked in an interview that you just wish someone would actually ask you? Erm...haha. I dunno, that’s a good question. [looonongg pause] That one? HAHA, yeah, that one! Got any good tour stories to tell us? There’s footage of me online getting Jordan from The Rizzle Kicks in the face with a fire extinguisher, and to get me back at my Bristol gig they rushed me on stage and then when I came off they threw things at me. It was ridiculous things like Perinese sauce, shampoo, cans of coke, there were chips flying everywhere, bits of half eaten chicken and I ended up having to pay for the backstage at Bristol Academy to be redecorated. It was quite funny though! What’s on your rider? Well I can tell you what’s not on there. My manager knows I hate cheese. I don’t just dislike it. I know hate’s a strong word and it takes a lot of energy, but it repulses me. I HATE cheese. On my first headline tour I arrived after the band, walk in and my manager had put a selection of continental cheese on my rider, and they’d all been picking at it and the packet was left open. I pretended to be way more annoyed than I was and I threw all the cheese at the wall, and they were like ‘Oh my god, were you really p*ssed off?’ and I was like yeah...HAHAHA not really. Are there going to be any special guest appearances happening on your upcoming UK tour? It depends where we are and who’s about, and if they can be bothered. Like Miles Kane is from Liverpool so if he’s about I’d love to get him involved. It’s all usually quite spontaneous, so yeah, whoever’s about and up for it. So what else can we expect from the tour? It’s going to be nuts. It’s my first proper headline tour in ages so I’m itching to get back on stage. The band’s tighter than ever. It’s not just going to be new album either, a lot of people are asking me if it’ll just be new music but it’ll be from all the albums. Words: Marianne Harris

If you were to have a rap battle, which famous rapper would you chose to rap against? Ghostface Killah. Because he’s one of my favourites. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever posted on a social media site? The latest thing I can think of is our sound engineer dressed as a...well I’m not sure what he’s dressed as. Go look at our Facebook / Instagram for a stream of unusual stuff and you might spot him in there, somewhere. Have you ever been stuck in a piece of clothing? (Skinny jeans etc.) I’ve never tried to take any of my clothes off...does that count as being “stuck”? If you could breed 2 animals together and defy the laws of nature, what would you create? A bad dog and a good dog, to make an alright dog. How did you decide on the name ‘Two Hands’ for your upcoming LP? It seemed like a good idea at the time.

Do you know CPR? If you mean Crassly Programming Robots then yes. If you were Captain of a Ship, what would you name it? The Quell. What would your band name be if I gave you these 5 words to create the name (Darling, Horses, Princess, Riot, Shamble) Darling Horses Princess Riot Shamble. When was the last time you ate a home-grown vegetable? About a week ago. My girlfriend’s dad grows all kinds of things. I eat them. How is the UK tour going with Royal Blood? Very nice thanks! They’re a couple of real good dudes and it’s been a pleasure touring with them. If you could only read a bird watching magazine, a train spotting magazine or a fishing magazine for the rest of your life, which would you chose? Probably the bird one, as they’re like small dinosaurs. You can pick four people to form a band to cover your songs, but they must all be called John. What Johns would you have in your band? John McCartney, John Plant, Jon Homme and John.

Budding pop-rockers Deaf Havana have truly blossomed this year. They picked up a Kerrang! award for Best Video and stormed through the charts with the success of their latest album ‘Old Souls’. They’ve come under a lot of scrutiny for having changed their sound in recent times – what was once a post-rock outfit with scream/sing vocals has evolved into a softer, more accessible and, dare we say it, more grown up Havana. Formed at college in King’s Lynn of all places, their debut album ‘Meet Me Halfway, At Least’ and a slot on the Metal Hammer Introducing tour shot into the public eye in 2009. In 2010 they dropped the screamed vocals as Ryan Mellor left the band for personal reasons. The tides changed and the band started to write their follow up and it was 2010’s breakthrough album ‘Fools and Worthless Liars’ that saw Deaf Havana flex their songwriting muscles and in turn brought their first taste of mainstream success. Over the next few years the band received regular Radio 1 playlisting, opened the main stage at Reading and Leeds and appeared on the covers of magazines. Latest release ‘Old Souls’ raced into the Official UK Albums Chart at number 9 upon release and saw the band headline both the Roundhouse and Clapham Grand in London as part of sellout UK tours, the latter complete with a gospel choir and string quartet. With their upcoming tour coming to the O2 Academy this month we thought we’d catch up with guitarist Chris Pennells for a wee chat.
DORSET MUSIC | DECEMBER 2014
So, you guys are just about to embark on your UK 2014 tour, what can your fans expect from the upcoming gigs? We’re planning on playing a fan-favourite set list. So we should be playing some songs we’ve never played before or at the very least, ones we haven’t played in a very long time! Within the last year, your music has taken a bit of a shift, how would describe your current sound to someone who hasn’t listened to it before? I always say to people, imagine if Foo Fighters met Mumford and Sons. That’s kinda the general vibe I think people would get from our last record at least. Do you feel that your fans have embraced the newest album even though it has drifted away from the heavy alt-rock sound you originally produced? We’re lucky enough that our fans are really loyal, and I think there’s still some tracks that have heavy elements to them. At the end of the day it’s still Rock!
DEAF HAVANA
What was your favourite track from your newest album ‘Old Souls’? I think my personal favourite is Speeding Cars. Tracks ‘Boston square’ and ‘Mildred’ have been praised widely, do you think that this is due to them having a more personal and acoustic feel? I think most of the songs James writes are written from the acoustic guitar and vocals upwards, and I’m not one to argue when he can come out with songs that feel genuine. What has been the highlight of 2014 for you as a band? Reading and Leeds main stage for me. We’d left our management at the start of the summer, and our tour manager was away so we all pulled together and did all the hard work ourselves. Felt great to be able to go back to a DIY scenario and play one of the biggest festivals in the UK, and have great shows. We know that you originally formed whilst studying at the College of West Anglia, but did you ever think you would be this successful? Not really, no! It was more for the fun of being in a band than anything else!! Has there ever been a nightmare situation right before one of your gigs? More than usual for any band, James will be taking a shit at the exact time we need to go on stage. Do any of you have a talent other than music? Max has many hidden talents. I’m sure of it. He just keeps them hidden. He’s a great human to observe. How will it be for the rest of you whilst James and Max are away on tour? We’ll probably be doing what we do right nowworking at our various jobs and keeping up with talking to fans on social media.
How did the North American Tour with You Me at Six arise and subsequently falter? We’ve been friends with them for a long time, it was just a shame that we had to pull out of it due to financial issues! You’re bringing Lonely the Brave and Verses out with you for these shows, are you fans of theirs? We’ve been really impressed by the Lonely The Brave record, and how well they’re doing off the back of it. Plus they’re incredible live. Verses we’ve known for absolutely ages throughout different re-incarnations of the same members, great band, and it’s going to be a laugh touring with them! What’s on the agenda for 2015? Write and record a new album!!

Deaf Havana has grown from a school band formed purely for fun to leading lights of the UK’s rock underground to a sextet with their eyes fixed firmly on the charts. From humble beginnings selling out small rooms like the Joiners just a few short years ago the band have since played the mainstage of numerous festivals, sold out the Roundhouse and supported Bruce Springsteen. They are taking in a few venues off the beaten track this December including the 02 Academy Bournemouth, you could be there with a pal, just answer this simple question...

www.rock-regeneration.co.uk In November I turned 45 and if I look back at myself in my 20’s I would have never of thought that I would be still enjoying my live music as much as I do now. If fact I think that I probably go to more gigs now than I did back then... At the beginning of the month I found myself at one of my favourite venues The Winchester. A great all round venue that regularly puts on live musical showcases. This one included the excellent Xander & the Keys whose twin guitar indie rock sound really impressed. Also on the bill was Bournemouth’s Sirpico whose piano led rock tunes really hit the mark with front man Al’s voice really doing the business with some fantastic vocal work. Salisbury band alt rock Pugwall completed the line up with a spirited, solid performance. Jack Grace is a Bournemouth artist whose career I have followed for some time with interest. He is a really passionate singer /song writer who just seems to get better and better with each performance he gives. On one hand he is a great solo artist who mixes things up with some ground breaking loop pedal work with acoustic guitars. On the other hand he has a band where he really lets rip with a massive bluesy effect laden guitar sound. On 15th November he launched his 3rd EP “Borrowed Words” at a packed gig at Chaplin’s in Boscombe. I can honestly say it was one of my favourite gigs of the year, the atmosphere in the place was fantastic with Jack using the atmosphere to his full advantage. A great night was certainly had by all, if you have not already check out Jack’s music at soundcloud.com/jackgracemusic I promise you won’t be disappointed. Another year has flown by amazingly quickly and as I look back over 2014 I cannot believe what a fantastic year it has been for live music in our very productive area here in Dorset. There has been a huge amount of new artists and bands come on to the music scene with masses of pure talent. For example bands like Soulhole whose very original funky and energetic shows have been making audiences dance this year. There are also some quality solo artists who are causing a massive stir in these parts, with big things expected in 2015 of Kaia Vieira, Drew Allen and Jack Grace. The summer festival scene is also flourishing and we can expect at least three brand new Dorset based festivals in 2015. The larger corporate venues such as the BIC and the O2 Academy seem to have lots of exciting acts already booked for the coming year. I am look forward to 2015 already!! I’d like to thank all the venues, artists, soundmen, promoters and journalists for all their help in 2014. All of us at Rock Regeneration would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very successful 2015. CHINNERS

ones to watch
How did you all get together as a band? Andy: I moved down from London about 2 years ago and the first thing I wanted to do was start up a new band. I met up with Jules and then we were looking for a bassist. Soon after I met Rich by chance in the bar in the Beacon Hotel in Bournemouth, and it all fell into place. We’ve all come from a number of previous projects and you can hear that experience in our sound. Sam: I joined a few months ago – I got a call from Jules, had a jam with the guys and got the job!
Rise To Serve are a four piece metal band from Bournemouth, who create a unique blend of classic metal with a modern progressive edge. They combine heavy metal riffs with a full sounding rhythm section, underlined with powerful vocals and memorable hooks, all whilst balancing lightning fast solo work with clever melodies. The band formed in June 2013 and released their initial four track demo in August 2014. Guitarist and vocalist Andrew Came, drummer Jules White and bassist Richard Lawrence were joined by the band’s new lead guitarist, Sam Churches, in September 2014. During their first year of gigging, they secured a semi-final place in the regional Bloodstock 2014 “Metal 2 The Masses” competition and were part of the yearly Bournemouth Oxjam Takeover festival. They have played a large number of successful live shows, winning over audiences wherever they play with their take on the metal genre.
Is it true that Julian used to play with Saxon? Jules: Ha! Unfortunately not! I was playing in Mindswitch at the time with Jon Rabbets and we supported Saxon. That experience, plus jamming with Nicko McBrain, have definitely been career highlights so far! But watch this space… You’re in the process of writing for a new EP, how’s that going and what can we expect? Andy: We’ve had a line-up change since our last record so the new material will have more of an influence from our new lead guitarist, Sam. So we’ll have a few more progressive songs and some fast lead guitar licks! We’re heading to the studio in the next few weeks to start the recording process which is very exciting. Sam: Expect heavy riffs, solos and some pretty cool guitar harmonies! I really enjoy writing with these guys, we definitely bring the best out in each other.
The band have made an impact in 2014, and will continue this trend in 2015 with the release of their next EP in January and after catching them at The Anvil last month, we thought we’d catch up with the guys for a chat to find out a little bit more…
What have you got planned for 2015? Andy: We’ll be heading out on a mini tour to coincide with our EP release. Then we’ll start looking at the next recording. There are so many cool ideas floating around the band at the moment and we are really excited to get them out there! We are hoping for a few festival slots in the summer too.
How did you choose your band name? Andy: It took us a long time to settle on it! We went through a few different ones, but in the end we agreed on “Rise To Serve”. For me, it highlights how I feel about the style of music we play – ever since I saw my first metal concert I’ve wanted to rise up and be a part of the metal scene.
If you could play any festival, which would it be? Andy: Rock Am Ring would be pretty cool! They always have such a great line up and it would be awesome to play at a European festival.
We can hear a big Metallica influence in your music, is that fair to say? Andy: I’d say so. Personally, I’ve always liked the idea of a frontman who plays guitar! I always wanted to do both and so James Hetfield was a massive influence on my playing as a result. Sam: Yes definitely. Metallica have been one of my biggest influences since I started playing guitar. What are some of your other influences? Andy: Probably Iced Earth and Iron Maiden for me. Although, I’m also a big fan of Machine Head so you might hear elements of that in some of our heavier songs. Sam: I’m influenced by a lot of music but for me it’s Iron Maiden, Anthrax, Steve Vai and Black Sabbath.
DORSET MUSIC |DECEMBER 2014
Sam: That’s a tough one! There are so many great festivals out there, but I’d go for Sonisphere or Download. Probably Download. You’re playing Oxjam this month, tell us a bit about that… Andy: We were very lucky to be part of this year’s Bournemouth’s Oxjam Takeover event in October. We had such a good time playing for a great cause and were excited to be asked to come back and play the Christmas event. Sam: It’ll be a great night of music for a great cause! I’m really looking forward to it…we might even play some new songs! Why should we come check out your live show? Andy: To join in with us on the chorus of our song Evil Awakes… “Rise Now”!!!
