Black dog, Led Zeppelin Who in the band has the worst habit and what is it? Night time sleep-prowling is one of the most interesting. What’s your favourite snack? We’re highly motivated by food. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to? Hannah & Emma : Björk, Biophilia tour. Ollie: Rage Against the Machine, Reading 2000 Jim: Prince, after show gig in 2006 Eliza : Prodigy, Jilted Generation tour 94. Kate: Crooked Still, Australia. AMbER RUN
Having deliberately chosen a name with no obvious connotations, Amber Run are determined to stand aside from the herd. And with their powerhouse indie pop sounds, they achieve it. The band’s previous singles - the anthemic ‘Noah’ and stirring ‘Heaven’ – both received support from the likes of Zane Lowe and Fearne Cotton on Radio 1, as well as being championed by XFM. Amber Run are currently in the studio recording their debut album with tip top producer Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Two Door Cinema Club, Foals, Jake Bugg), due for release later this year but if you can’t wait that long, check out their current single ‘Spark’. Their live shows are not to be missed - having recently headlined the BBC Introducing night at Koko in London where they stunned fans with their vast sound and pitch perfect harmonies. They’re performing at a whole host of festivals this summer, including the fabulous Festibelly in the New Forest on 12 July so we thought it would be best to catch up with frontman Will Jones to find out a bit more about Amber Run… You’ve just come off tour with Kodaline, what was that like? Yeah, amazing. It was our first support tour and the first time we got to play in front of a few thousand people a night so it was a proper buzz for all of us. Shame it didn’t last longer really! At our stage you don’t really get the chance to play on those kinds of stages so it was good to get a taste of what it feels like to be up there. New single ‘Spark’ came out recently, how did that go? Really well. We’re all very proud of that song and it felt good to finally get it out there. You end up sitting on some songs so long waiting to put them out so we were excited to show it to people. And you’re currently recording an album, is that right? What can we expect and when do we get to hear it? We’ve finished the album now. We spent 4 weeks over January and February doing it and did a few more songs for it a couple of weeks ago in May. Can’t say for sure when you’ll get to hear it, we’re looking at early 2015 right now. I suppose the album is really a solid demonstration of the kind of band we are right now. I think people get it in their heads that we’re a newer Mumford and Sons but that couldn’t be further from the truth really. People will see what I mean when they hear the album. I don’t think there’s an acoustic guitar in sight except for on one song, and there’s a lot of synths and programming in there. What was it like working with Mike Crossey? Well we had heard about Mike beforehand because he’d done such amazing work with those bands. When we were talking about working with him, The 1975’s record had just come out which we were all so impressed by. You only get to do your debut album once and Mike managed to inject so much life into it and we couldn’t be prouder. He has the experience to be able to pull off some mad ideas we could never even dream up to make the record sound so dynamic. Mike, Jon Gilmore and Mike Spink (the engineers) are the best guys and we consider them all good friends now.
DORSET MUSIC | JUly 2014
What are your biggest influences, musical or otherwise? Our producer and good friend Sam Winfield has said a few times that he doesn’t think he’s met a band whose members have such different tastes. We really just always end up wanting to make our songs sound as huge as possible. I think the key influences are bands who are known for their dynamics such as Elbow, alongside the more atmospheric bands like This Will Destroy You and Explosions in the Sky. There’s genuinely just so much in there thrown together. You’re performing at a load of festivals this summer, do you have a favourite? There’s a lot of different ones. We were excited to do Isle of Wight because of the scale of the whole thing, but on the other end of the spectrum I’m really looking forward to playing Barn on the Farm. We played it last year when we had just started out and it was such a good vibe. The weather was unbelievable and the intimacy of the whole thing really makes it special. And you’re off on tour with Lewis Watson shortly, what can we expect from the live show? Well, we want to try out some new songs later in the year so we might throw a couple of curveballs into the set. We want to make as big an impact as possible so we’ll do as much as we can with the time we have. We’re always trying to grab the attention of the crowd so expect a set with a lot of dynamics. What was it that got you all together as a band? Joe (vocals), Tom (bass) and I have known each other for years as we went to school together. We played in bands back then but it was just for fun. Joe started doing solo, singer-songwriter stuff when he went off to Nottingham. After a while he realised that he’d rather be doing a band so we all decided to come together under the name Amber Run and start making much bigger music. Henry (keys) was Tom’s neighbour in halls and Felix (drums) was a friend from home. It was all very natural which was why we were so surprised when things started kicking off so soon after forming.

It’s summer and that means two things – firstly, we want festivals and lots of them and secondly, we want to dance around to happy and uplifting tunes. And if Reel Big Fish aren’t the epitome of sunshine then we don’t know what is! With their tongue in cheek lyrics, bouncing ska punk beats and brass section they’ll have you throwing your arms into the air and jumping up and down like a loon within moments of taking the stage. Shooting into the limelight in the late 90s with their smash hit ‘Sell Out’ they joined the legions of ska-punk bands crossing over into the mainstream MTV generation. And they haven’t stopped since. Despite numerous line up changes (vocalist Aaron Barrett is the only original member) and a whole heap of record company malarkey, they’re still out there, 20 years down the line, making the world a slightly better place. So, we’re all off to the seaside this month as these goofy lads hit the coast, hopefully bringing some of their Californian weather with them. Their biting wit, infectiously catchy tunes and hyperkinetic live show ensures that a skankingly good time will be had by all. We grabbed a few minutes with frontman and founding member Aaron Barrett to take a look at the real Reel Big Fish…. How do you choose what goes into the set list from your huge back catalogue? It’s definitely not easy because there are a ton of songs. We do want to mix it up and keep the set list fresh and not ALWAYS the same, but there are a lot of songs that we HAVE to play and that people LOVE and would be definitely disappointed to not hear. But I think we do a pretty good job of making an awesome set list for every show! What’s your favourite song to play live? It’s always fun to play the songs that make the crowd go crazy and get a huge reaction, songs like Beer, Sell Out, Take on Me and all the hits! You’re on a load of festival line ups, sandwiched in amongst loads of metal bands, how does that work? Do you find folks appreciate a break from the metalz? We always get a little nervous and worry about how we are going to go over when we’re playing these metal festivals but we always get an awesome reaction and people really get into us, also we have lots of fans of our band who also love metal and they come out to support us. It always ends up being fun and we definitely get noticed because we’re so different! How do UK festivals compare to those in the US? They are both very similar; a bunch of sweaty, dirty, drunken, sunburned people who love music and want to have a good time and want to party hard!
cool again already! But as far as a ska band breaking through, there are a lot of great ska bands out now, I’m sure it’s only a matter of time till we hear a big hit ska song on the radio again. What career would you have had if you weren’t in Reel Big Fish? Who knows…maybe I WOULD have worked in fast food all my life. There have been loads of line up changes over the years as ‘real’ life gets in the way of ‘Reel’ life (sorry!), can you see an end to RBF? Very clever! Haha yes, a few of the old members have left in the last 10 years because babies came along and they wanted to be home to raise them and have a family instead of traveling the world 300 days a year. When I was younger I definitely would not have understood the way they feel but now that I am older I definitely understand what they are going through. It’s not easy on a relationship and a family when you’re gone ALL the time. But I have no plans at all to end Reel Big Fish or to slow down or stop touring; I’ll be doing this for a long time to come! What’s the craziest thing a fan has ever brought you as a gift? I was given a midget inflatable sex doll and a DVD with midget porn on it. Also, someone anonymously sent us a Lady Gaga (or lady Gag Gag) inflatable sex doll to our studio. Not sure where they got the idea that we want blow up dolls!
You’re on tour ALL THE TIME, what are your tour bus essentials? Beer, video games, beer, DVDs, beer, coffee…….and ear plugs.
What do you wish fans would bring you? Oh I don’t know, I don’t need any gifts, just coming to the gigs to see us play and to dance is more than I could ever hope for or ask for from our awesome fans!
Who’s got the worst habits and what are they? Everybody in the band is pretty mellow these days and don’t do much to annoy each other. When Scott was in the band, he used to spread his sweaty, stinky clothes all over the back lounge to dry and the whole place smelled like vinegar. Pretty gross!
And finally, you probably get asked the same things over and over in interviews. What’s the one question you wish people would ask? Haha I don’t know, I’ve been asked just about everything over the years. I guess the question I DON’T like is, “give a brief history of the band” There’s just no short, easy answer for that one!
Do you think ska is due another moment in the spotlight? Are there any new bands you think might break through in a similar way to the way you did? You never know! I have definitely noticed that the hipsters are wearing Hawaiian shirts now and that the Specials and the Selecter have played the super cool hipster festival Coachella. Maybe ska is

everything, get a feel for those massive stages which we are definitely not used to, but once we figured out what was what, we just lost it. I also loved seeing how big productions like this work from behind the scenes too, I’ve always been a bit of a nerd for “behind the scenes” things so it was a bit of an eye opener, for us all. An experience we’ll never forget. And now you’re setting out for the seaside to do a run of club shows. Is it strange to go from massive arenas to festivals to small venues and do you have a preference? It is a little bit funny when you think about it, playing Brixton Academy and Download festival to venues with an 80 cap, but to be honest, it doesn’t matter where we end up, we’re still gonna play with every ounce of energy we have and just have fun. Some say our band is suited to smaller, more intimate shows and some say we work well on a big stage. Truth is, we’re just happy to be playing our music live to people with our friends no matter where. It’ll be hard for us to ever get demoralised from going from big to small as if you love what you do, nothing should get in the way.
If you haven’t encountered the ferociousness that is Baby Godzilla yet then, well, brace yourselves. And we recommend wearing protective clothing. This Nottingham four piece are not so much a band as they are an experience, and it’s certainly one you won’t forget. Theirs is a unique brand of rock, lavishly served up with a generous helping of heavy. These boys make noise and lots of it. They also like to cause a scene. There is no standing unnoticed, quietly at the back at their live shows. In fact, there is no back – their set takes place on stage, in the crowd, on top of the crowd, half way up the lighting rig, in fact, anywhere they can get to regardless of whether that’s in the room or outside. A firm favourite at Dorset Music HQ we’ve watched as they utilise crowd members as equipment (who needs mic stands anyway!?!), interrupted unsuspecting members of the public attempting to enjoy a quiet drink outside the venue and sail their bass drum across the mosh pit. Fast becoming a promoter’s worst nightmare they’ve wreaked havoc at ArcTanGent, Takedown and Download festivals, they’ve toured the UK with Limp Bizkit and the Kerrang! Tour and now they’ve decided to take a little jaunt to the coast for a series of set-to-be-insane-seaside-and-sand-castle club shows. But don’t take our word for it, take theirs. We caught up with Matt, Jonny, Paul and Tom for a few beers and a good old chinwag on a park bench at Download festival…and mayhem ensued (obviously)… You are literally fresh (well, not so fresh!) from playing Download. In fact, we’re still here…..how did the show go? Honestly, it was one of my favourite shows I’ve ever played. I’ll never forget that show. It was quite a big deal for us as it was our first big festival appearance, and that being download festival, we were so excited and I think it showed! Just ask the security... we are all still friends by the way haha. Earlier this year you opened for Limp Bizkit on the Kerrang tour, what was that like? Bizarre but amazing! It was an honour for us to play such a slot supporting 3 great bands, something we’d never even thought would happen. It took us a few shows to get to grips with
DORSET MUSIC | JULY 2014
The Download stage managers weren’t too keen about you climbing the staging today, what’s been the craziest venue to climb on? Haha, no they weren’t. It sounds funny but we can probably find anything to climb up or hang off in any venue! We played a show at The Scala in London recently and Matt was absolutely everywhere. That venue has lots of different levels and railings which made for quite a fun gig! What’s the worst injury that you’ve had from playing a show and who was it? We have been lucky with injuries while playing, but sometimes accidents do happen but you just got to power through. We played some gigs in Poland about 3 years ago now and I remember jumping off the stage with my snare over my head which hit me and resulted in a lot of blood on my face. Jonny also tore a ligament in his knee whilst doing the least rock n roll “jump back on stage” move ever. We took him to A&E the morning after, strapped him up and just carried on. How many guitars have you gone through since you started? We counted the other day and it’s approaching 20 I think... which is absurd haha. We have a guitar graveyard at our practice room where we put all the dead. It’s a sad place. Your sponsors must love you… Haha, they do! We have a close relationship with Hofner, they’ve helped us out so much. We’re just happy we have the luxury of being in such great hands! Are you recording at the moment? When can we get our grubby paws on some new material? We are going into the studio very soon to start recording our first full length album which will be out at some point in life... But as for near future, we have a single that we’ll be releasing very, very soon. Top secret I’m afraid! Jonny, do you use any products on your particularly impressive beard? Not washing and instant noodles. Which one of you would make the best girl? Matt, he’s fabulous. And finally, who’s getting the next round of beers in? You please because we’ve run out of money! [at which point beers were bought and Jager was forced down my neck, as a thank you, apparently - Z] WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

rock regeneration For the last month I have been busy helping judge and coordinate the Best Of Bournemouth Battle of The Bands competition...
w w w. ro c k- re g e n e rat i o n . co. u k
This was originally the idea of local promoter Thomas Taff Morse of Gigs and Rigs. There has not been a competition like this since the utterly brilliant Dorset Music Awards in 2012. I understand that this sort of thing is not to everyone’s liking as music is usually a complete matter of taste. These events though do many things, they give the bands performing confidence and the bring a whole load of musicians together that may have never met before, possibly sparking new collaborations. The event was held at the newly refurbished Talbot Pub in Winton, Bournemouth. There was four heats, two Semi Finals and a Grand Final. There was a complete mix of artists covering many genres and the standard was extremely high with very little to put between each of them. The four finalists were Southern Brotherhood, Sunstone Collective, Soulhole and Brother’s Grimmer who all put in amazing top notch entertaining performances on the night. The winners deemed by myself and the other judges were Brother’s Grimmer a quality four piece psychedelic rock outfit with a singing break-dancer who has to be seen to be believed. The feed back from all the entered was fantastic so fingers crossed we can all do it again next year. The Sabres were guests in the Hope FM Studio in June, a 3 piece rock power trio who formed in 2011 after the demise of their previous band “Hoffman Sloth” . The band came along to the Hope FM studio with a rather stripped down semiacoustic set-up from what they would normally produce live. This was no problem for them as the are equally comfortable with both set-ups, as the have performed some of their songs many times at open mic nights in the past. The radio listeners were treated to a three song set which included an excellent cover of “ Want You Bad” by The Offspring as well as a couple or their own original numbers. They have just released the 2nd album “Humans” which is available from their website www. thesabres.co.uk for free by entering the code humans. June is also the time for the Wimborne Folk Festival which is an annual event that stretches over the whole of Wimborne town with plenty of traditional dancing as well as music stages from a mix of genres popping all over the place. With so much going on it is almost hard to choose what to see, the best way is just to wander and see where it takes you with surprises around every corner. I was lucky enough to see folk/punk band Black Water County put in a great busking set despite competing with some loud chiming Church Bells. Local singer Kaia Vieira put in a stunning performance to a large appreciative crowd proving she is certainly an act to watch for the future. CHINNERS

previews Rootsy and uplifting reggae indie pop
A perfect combination of jazz and reggae and complete and utter freedom which reflects in their stage performances. Led by the off-beat toots of the bluesy Balkan-inspired brass band and the Adam Levine-injected vocals from Matthew Sellors, the whole theme of their shows is to have fun and not take yourself too seriously, making them energetic and charming. BABY GODZILLA
AUG 08 | THE ANVIL
JUL 26 | THE WINCHESTER
Singing yo-ho yo-ho a bottle of rum and up we go Brace yourself. Baby Godzilla are coming to party, seaside style. Known for making a whole lotta noise and for creating a whole lotta carnage on stage, theirs is a live show all should experience. It’s angry and aggressive with thrashing guitars and scream, sung and chanted vocals. They’re a stage manager’s worst nightmare and are rarely ever to be found on the actual stage. Wear protective clothing. FOR FANS OF: CANCER BATS / FEED THE RHINO / GALLOWS
A Welsh cocktail of punk, reggae, rock and metal From a sleepy town in Wales to the main stages of festivals, Skindred return to the stage after touring in Japan and performing main stage at Download and are ready to go hard or go home with fifth album “Kill the Power”. Having created their own genre of raggametal, there ain’t no mosh pit sweatier than a Skindred mosh pit and this Bestival warm up show is likely to be INSANE. Having performed with Stereophonics, Lawson and The Wanted, it’s no wonder Montague was picked to support Shane Filan’s tour this year. With his romantic lyrics and sweet as chocolate vocals, he’s the man every boy wants to be and every girl wants to be with. His latest EP, The Truth, was received with critical acclaim and will undoubtedly have crowds swaying in appreciation of his songs.

OCT 22| OLD FIRE STATION
The very best of rock metal
Developing on their hugely successful history with early metal and classic rock, Skid Row are keeping contemporary and leaving audiences in awe of their overwhelmingly diverse musical talents. The familiar and stellar vocals of not -so-new-kid-on-theblock Johnny Sollinger are still just as hard-hitting and regenerate the cutting power of the great rock gigs of the 80s. UB40
UB40 need no introduction. Massive hits “I Got You Babe” and “Red, Red Wine” have cemented this act as behemoths of the reggae pop genre, but perhaps what sets them apart is their more experimental tunes from the early stages of their career. Their music boasts lovely syncopated rhythms with glossy and glorious horn melodies which are a musical blast from the past. FOR FANS OF: LEVEL 42/ BIG MOUNTAIN / JIMMY CLIFF

With a massive 11 band members, Bellowhead founders John Spiers and Jon Boden sure have succeeded in their mission to find a bigger sound for English folk music. Uplifting and smile inducing, don’t hold back! FOR FANS OF: FAIRPORT CONVENTION / STEELEYE SPAN
SAXON
As pioneers of, and at the forefront of the then new wave of british heavy metal Saxon enjoyed a period of prominence in the UK (including popular chart success) and Europe in the early 80s - and they’re STILL rocking! With such an impressive back catalogue of power metal you can expect hit after unrelenting hit. FOR FANS OF: JUDAS PRIEST / ANVIL & ERM….SAXON!
SABATON
DEC 01 | O2 ACADEMY Epic and explosive return of metal
Already meeting chart success this year with their newest studio album, Heroes, going straight to number one in Sweden, it’s clear that Sabaton mean business. Still raging with their dramatically intense guitar riffs, accompanied by the heavy metal roar of lead vocalist Joakim Broden, the band are as powerful on stage as they are on record. You can expect to get sweaty and bouncy when they storm into town.

Eleven:XI are riding 2014 in style with the release of their exciting new album ‘Look At The Time’. After a busy year of gigging this Poole based six piece have teamed up with world class mastering engineer Pete Maher (U2, The Killers) to record their first album. Inspired from a range of influences this pop fuelled record is out now and is filled with rocking, indie-pop anthems guaranteed to lift the spirits and get you grooving. Whilst gigging relentlessly across the south coast, as well as holding down ‘real lives, these guys (and girl!) are fast becoming firm favourites on the local scene and there sure are plenty of chances to get out to see them coming up. We caught up with bassist Wally Wallis to get the low down and find out if this band really does turn it up to Eleven!
just as a three piece consisting of bass, drums and guitar trying out Paul’s new songs and some of his older material that was to be given a new lease of life. Chris and Carly where then asked to join on the merits of Chris’s guitar playing and Carly for her angelic singing voice and amazing harmonies already tried and tested in past collaborations with Paul. Unfortunately our first drummer had to leave due to other commitments and that is when we turned to Mo Knott, who again had been in bands with Paul in the past. Everything just seemed to fit together nicely and everyone seemed to gel together nicely each bringing their own individual attributes into the band. Your album has just come out – how has that gone? The album has been released on iTunes and all other on-line streaming sites as well as a physical copy and is slowly trickling around locally and to friends and family around the globe. But the idea is to get out and promote and play the album at numerous festivals and gigs this summer to help spread the word. It has been received very well and has had a lot of praise both musically and for its top quality production. What have you got lined up for 2014? Just to get out to as many festivals and gigs to promote our album. We have a VW festival in Norfolk in a couple of weeks, as well as some other local festivals and events including a gig at Mr Kyps on July the 18th.
What are you guys doing when you’re not being Eleven? Paul is always writing and composing new songs in between teaching others guitar and doing sound and PA hire for One Two Sounds. Wally is So, who are you and what do you all do in the band? a 2nd year music promotion student at Southampton Solent University Paul Read - lead guitar and lead vocals, Wally Wallis - bass guitar, Chris and when not playing his guitars he is busy producing/filming/ editing Skerman - rhythm/lead guitar and backing vocals, Carly green - vocals/ films and photography. Who are your biggest influences? The Who , Pink Floyd, The Beatles If you could go on tour with anyone, who would it be? How did you all get together as a band? We had all previously linked up in the past for different musical collaborations and projects between ourselves and friendships were already in place throughout the band. Paul, our lead singer, has been writing and playing music both in bands and in the studio as a solo artist for 30+ years, whilst the rest of the band were again focusing on their own musical pursuits as individuals. In the summer of 2012 Paul had written the song Halcyon Days after rekindling a romance from his younger days. After playing it to Wally he asked if he knew any drummers because he wanted to start a band. Wally then got in touch with a friend of his who played drums and we began jamming
