How did you guys meet and what prompted you to start making music together? We’ve known each other for years, couldn’t really say where we first met though. We ended up making noise together after I booked Scroob for his first ever gig and I remixed some of his tracks. After a short while we decided to make something new together.

If Pip had to describe you in 3 words, which words would he choose? Big bearded idiot How would you describe Pip in 3 words? Lyric twizzling craftsman. What’s the most annoying habit Pip has? Sadly he doesn’t have any noteworthy bad habits anymore, the man is a delight. You’re both sporting impressive facial hair these days. What’s your best beard grooming tip? I don’t give tips, you’ve gotta learn for yourself. If Pip was really grumpy one day, how would you get him to crack a smile? I honestly don’t know, generally if he’s grumpy he needs a feed, so I’d probably throw pizza at him. If you had to enter a TV quiz/challenge show, which one would it be? Robot Wars, but I wouldn’t bring a robot, I’d just bring a big hammer and shin pads. Tell us one thing about Pip you think we should know The man makes chocolate from scratch! If you were Pip’s career advisor, what would you have suggested he do for a living (if music wasn’t an option)? So damn difficult, he already looks like a geography teacher so maybe that’s the way he should’ve gone!

DORSET MUSIC | MARCH 2014

New album ‘Repent, Replenish, Repeat’ is out now after a bit of a break since ‘Angles’ and “Logic of Chance”– has having some time apart working on your solo projects affected the album at all? After Angles and Logic we toured together for ages, but we had spent so much time together it didn’t feel like we could surprise or push each other any more. The time apart, working on the solo records gave us both the chance to bring in other influences into our respective styles, so when it came back to working on our collaboration we had new ideas to throw at each other. RRR is the result of that! What’s your writing process like? We don’t work together, mainly because our disciplines are so different, we tend to bounce ideas back and forth via email. This also means that we avoid getting on each others tits. DAN LE SAC vs SCROOBIUS PIP

Your effective use of social media channels has helped you to share your music from the beginning. Do you think it’s easier to get your message across in the Twitter generation? It is easier to get your message out to those that are listening, those who choose to follow you, BUT with the amount of information being pumped into the internet on a daily basis, it can be difficult to find a new audience. Social Networking is a great tool but it shouldn’t be the only route you use to get your music out there. Have you ever made any social media faux pas in saying something you shouldn’t? The biggest faux pas you can make is appearing ungrateful, no matter how well or badly your record does, a musician is still in the privileged position of making noise for a living, grumbling about people torrenting or not getting radio play or whatever just makes you look a bit like a dick. How are you enjoying being back out on the road, performing live together again? It has been delightful, really looking forward to hitting it hard next year! You had to add a second London date to this tour, which must have felt pretty good. Is there any show you’re particularly looking forward to? Any stand out favourite venues or crowds? Adding a second date in London was stunning, the support has been immense. As for stand outs we make it a rule never to play favourites!

If Dan had to describe you in 3 words, which words would he choose? Big Bearded idiot How would you describe Dan in 3 words? Beat building wizard. What’s the most annoying habit Dan has? Snoring is the only thing really. But the poor devil cant help that I guess. You’re both sporting impressive facial hair these days. What’s your best beard grooming tip? I’m all about beard oil. Woodsman is my favourite. Its the most manly smell ever. If Dan was really grumpy one day, how would you get him to crack a smile? God I dont know. Im terrible at these things. I would probably put some stand up on in the van and try to force it out of him. If you had to enter a TV quiz/challenge show, which one would it be? Crystal Maze. I’d smash it. Block out the shouting idiots, solve stuff, get me some crystals, go hang with Richard O’Brian. Standard. Tell us one thing about Dan you think we should know Dan le Sac plays a mean fussball. If you were Dan’s career advisor, what would you have suggested he do for a living (if music wasn’t an option)? Hmmmm if music (and the music industry) weren’t an option (there are loads of areas outside of PLAYING music) then I think I’d go with some kind of coffee shop or something. He would proper nerd out over different fancy kinds of coffee and Mrs le Sac bakes a mean cake.

RODRIGUEZ

It’s an interesting and mysterious tale that surrounds American folk musician Sixto Diaz Rodriguez. Mexican born but hailing from Detroit, Michigan he is most known for this 1970 album Cold Fact, with the follow up 1971 Coming from Reality not quite reaching as far. After being dropped from his record label in 1975, Sixto registered and ran for city council in Detroit. The county spelled his name wrong on the ballot and after failing to make an impact in North America, he gave up his career as a musician. However, although he was relatively unknown in his home country, his albums were starting to gain airplay in South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. After imported copies of his albums ran dry, an Australian record label, released his two studio albums plus a compilation album At His Best in the mid ‘70s. Unbeknownst to Rodriguez, it went platinum in South Africa, where he achieved cult status. His Bob Dylanesque brand of politically charged music inspired a nation stricken by apartheid and he became a prophet-like figure in South Africa with his music becoming anthemic to the uprising there. Due to his public obscurity (and this being long before the internet allowed us to keep such constant tabs on our musicians), rumours started to fly that Rodriguez had committed suicide, however, these were dispelled in 1979 when, with a new buzz around him, he toured Australia with the Mark Gillespie Band as support. Two shows from the tour were later released on the Australian-only album Alive—the title being a play on the rumours of his death. After the ’79 tour, he returned to Australia for a final tour in 1981 with Midnight Oil before quietly slipping away from the limelight and back into normal life, gaining a degree in philosophy while working as a demolition man and reigniting the rumours of his demise. In 1991, both of his albums were released on CD in South Africa for the first time and his popularity grew, making him bigger than Elvis or the Rolling Stones in this corner of the world. His fame in South Africa was completely unknown to him, until 1998 when his eldest daughter came across the website dedicated to finding him and solving the mystery of Rodriguez (www.sugarman.org). In 1998, he played his first South African tour, playing six concerts in front of thousands of fans. A documentary about the tour “Dead Men Don’t Tour: Rodriguez in South Africa 1998″ was screened in 2001. Later he played Sweden before returning to South Africa in 2001 and 2005. Rodriguez’s albums Cold Fact and Coming from Reality were re-released by Light in the Attic Records in 2009 and in 2012, the Sundance Film Festival hosted the premiere of the documentary film Searching for Sugar Man, from Swedish director Malik Bendjelloul, detailing the efforts of two South African fans to see if his rumoured death was true—and if not, to discover what had become of him. The Searching for Sugar Man soundtrack features a compilation of Rodriguez tracks from his Cold Fact and Coming from Reality albums. Heralded as one of the great poets of our time it is amazing that this enigma of talent has remained largely unrecognised whilst his counterparts went on to become such massive stars. Rodriguez tours the UK this month and Bournemouth is lucky enough to have him visit the BIC on Sunday 9th March. We were lucky enough to get a few words with this wandering spirit about his time in and out of the music industry. We urge you not to miss this unsung folk hero.

RODRIGUEZ

How does it feel to resurrect your musical career after essentially putting it to bed many years ago? I am enjoying myself. I have always been a musician, in spite of having to do other things to make ends meet. There are many ways to make a living in the music industry. I have been lucky, I have been able to share my travels with the ones I love.

themes they use, like boy-girl themes, marching or dancing tunes, and call and response. I try to write about what I see around me. There is plenty to write about in that so this is where my material comes from. There are country tunes and there is ethnic music. I am urban and so are the descriptions in those compositions on my albums.

What was your reaction when you were first told about the Search for Sugar Man resonating out of South Africa? I never knew I was lost so when people were looking for me, it was surprising to say the least. South Africa was a place that I really hadn’t thought of until then. Three individuals, Brian Currin, Craig Bartholomew Strydom, and Stephen Segerman came a long way to track me down to where I was in Detroit.

Are there any plans for making another album? Yes! Always. I am writing and getting together different riffs all the time. I am looking forward to getting back in the studio this year.

How has the film Searching for Sugar Man changed things for you? The film has opened up new music markets to me and introduced me to audiences where I didn’t have them before. Your music is quite anti-establishment and politically charged. Have you always tried to write about what you believe in? I am a musical-political and writers have different

DORSET MUSIC | MARCH 2014

What are you most looking forward to about touring the UK? The best part is meeting the people. I have a great audience - I enjoy my audience. Saying hello, having a cheers, breaking bread in all of these places. I feel lucky because I get to enjoy this all with my loved ones. Take a few people with me. This time, I will have a chance to see a couple places I haven’t been like Bournemouth and Birmingham so I am really looking forward to that. I enjoy the cultural exchange; and I want to make rock and roll history here, in these places. Maybe we will see you out there, man.

ROCK REGENERATION As we arrive in March I can only hope that we have seen the end of that appalling weather and it is blues skies all the way ahead for the spring. Yet again despite the weather being an absolute nightmare I have managed to have a very busy couple of weeks since I last wrote.

At the end of January a recently formed Dorset based band by the name of “Broken Branches” came along to the Hope Fm studio for an interview and acoustic session. They totally impressed with their 90’s inspired tunes with a slice intriguing Americana. In February a band formerly known as “Lucky 13” reinvented themselves as “Neon Dawn” and played one hell of a show supporting a tribute to Green Day at Mr Kyp’s in Poole. Their performance of loud twin guitars and epic tunes reminded me just how live music should be played, certainly one to watch for the future. At O’Neill’s in Bournemouth town a wonderful group of big hearted people put on an amazing charity event for Cancer Research featuring four local bands The Jack Ratts, Walk The Night, Dakota and 9 Left Behind. The evening went really well with some great full on live performances, it was very well attended and raised a large sum of cash for a really worthy cause. Turning my mind to March I have the pleasure in helping with another charity event “Hospices Rock” at Mr Kyps on March 7th. The event is being used to raise funds for the local Lewis Manning and Forest Holme Hospices. There are four great bands performing Empire Affair, Saints of Sin, Walk The Night and Sansara, please come along to support this event it is sure to be a great evening. The other now annual event in March that I am really looking forward to is “Takedown 2014”, ok so it is over the border in Southampton but as well as some really big name acts you will also find Bournemouth bands Voodoo Vegas and Western Sand both performing at the event, so get down early to check them out. ONES TO WATCH

place at the right time. We all wanted to make something funky and uplifting and really try and make something of our music. What bands do you guys love listening to? We literally listen to all kinds of things. Sam’s always been big into his jazz, blues and soul, Otis Reading, Howling Wolf, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, that kind of stuff. Duncan’s actually a massive metalhead, so we’ve been listening to a lot of Periphery recently. Bonobo, Oceansize, Cat Empire, Fatboy Slim, James Brown, anything we can get our hands on really. We’re really enjoying listening to Pachango’s album in the car at the moment. Poor Michael’s new EP is sounding pretty awesome too.

Formed on the shores of sunny Bournemouth in April 2013, Sunstone Collective play a blend of original grooves, jazz, rock & funk inspired by their surroundings on the South Coast. In September 2013, Sunstone Collective released their self-recorded, self-titled debut EP on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and more through Ditto Music. Having hosted a successful launch party at the Winchester, the band were subsequently offered an ongoing residency and it’s here that we first caught a glimpse of their sunshine-filled magical powers. With a strong DIY attitude and belief in self-sustainability, Sunstone Collective use their residency to run monthly nights focused around the collaboration and support of their local and broader art and music scenes and pride themselves on carrying this attitude with them to all their shows. Their brand of summery grooves and laid back rhythms should ensure they appear at a festival near you this summer but these guys play a lot so there are plenty of chances to catch them in and around Bournemouth! Who are you and what do you do in the Sunstone Collective? Hi Dorset Music Magazine! We’re Sunstone Collective, there’s five of us here: Sam Wyatt, our guitarist and lead vocalist, Ben Jones, bassist and general busybody, Duncan Petrus, lead guitarist, Jamie Smith, drummer and James “Djembe” Goff, our percussion player. How did you guys form as a band? [Ben:] In an unusual turn of events, we were actually offered a gig before we had a band. A good friend of mine had asked if I could get a band together to play at the first Collaboration Station in Bournemouth and we decided to give it a go. I’d met Sam at an open mic night the week before and we were keen to play together - we gathered a bunch of our musical friends into the studio and it all went from there. Six weeks later we played the event and we haven’t stopped since. What made you first decide to start making music? We all grew up around various musical inspirations; Sam comes from a line of singers, Ben’s dad was in a jazz band, we all had music around us while we grew up. As far as starting up Sunstone was concerned, it all just seemed to fall into place: Duncan knew Ben from school and had just returned from studying guitar at university, Ben and Jamie were playing together already, Djembe was keen to get gigging again and Sam was basically in the right

DORSET MUSIC | MARCH 2014

If you could play any festival in the world (and any stage) which would it be? Glastonbury or Burning Man would be incredible! They’re just on a whole other scale in terms of size and atmosphere. If time travel was an option then Woodstock would have been pretty cool too! What’s on the game plan for Sunstone Collective in 2014? We’re working on quite a few things at the moment….we’ve got another EP coming out soon where we’ve tried something a little bit different. We’re working on a bunch of videos for a show at the Anvil at the end of March too. Got our first few festival bookings, more collaborations, new band members, new material, all kinds of things, it’s all pretty exciting. Do you have any other talents, apart from music? We spend most of our time playing music, so not many! Djembe has a workshop at home so he makes all manner of weird and wonderful things from wood and metal. Ben does a bit of graphic design when he’s not in the studio. Sam’s got a pretty mean moonwalk! What’s your favourite post-gig snack? We usually eat a proper meal before the gig if we can so we don’t normally eat afterwards. We love a good burger from Smokey’s though. Sam makes a pretty mean pulled pork, generally anything slow cooked is a winner. Most of the time we just stick around at the venue and have a couple of drinks instead. Tell us what your most elaborate on stage costume would be if you had no limit on your budget…. Duncan essentially wants to be Wes Borland from Limp Bizkit - elaborate head gear, crazy lights, full body paint that kind of thing. Sam wants an elephant costume that he can still play guitar in. Anything with loads of LEDs and various lights would be pretty cool! Other than that…. birthday suits? And finally, complete this sentence…..If you like ??????? you should check out Sunstone Collective. If you like music with a groove and a feel good vibe you should check out Sunstone Collective.
