WELCOME
Thanks for picking up the March 2015 issue of Dorset Music Magazine, your one stop guide to the best music in the county and beyond. This month we chat to the twisted genuis that is Devin Townsend about the return of his coffee loving alien alter ego (no really). We also ask some silly questions to Bury Tomorrow and we talk to flamboyant songstress Paloma Faith who is performing at the BIC this month. All this plus previews, listings and announcements from all of the best venues and events in the Dorset area and a chance to win tickets to see Devin Townsend Project’s Albert Hall warm up show at the O2 Academy Bournemouth.

FEATURE Space opera. Yes, that’s a thing. It’s one of the many things that the inimitable Devin Townsend has brought to the world of music over his wide and varied career. And now he’s bringing it to Bournemouth. Plucked seemingly from nowhere (but perhaps actually from a galaxy far, far away) he first appeared on none other than Steve Vai’s album ‘Sex & Religion’ where we were introduced to his vocal talents. Then came the Strapping Young Lad years – years filled with aggressive accounts of his experiences in the music industry and a whole lot of metal. After becoming a father in 2006 and giving up drinking and smoking, Devin turned his attention to more solo projects which eventually lead to the formation of The Devin Townsend Project and the allegiance with the enigmatic Ziltoid. It’s nigh on impossible to describe the varied back catalogue involved with TDTP so let’s focus on what exactly the O2 Academy is in for on Saturday 11 April. The Return of Ziltoid. In short, an intense and hilarious performance of 2014’s Dark Matters, the second instalment of the Ziltoid story which sees the ambitious rock opera brought to life through music, visuals and a stunning stage show. Having sold out the Royal Albert Hall for the main event, we’re feeling extremely lucky that Ziltoid has decided to grace Bournemouth with the warm up for this show. Now Devin is not your ordinary musician so we decided that this should be no ordinary interview, so we opened this up to his fans and gathered some of our favourite suggestions for questions to put to the man himself. So this is what happened, when YOU interviewed Devin Townsend…
DORSET MUSIC | MARCH 2015
How are rehearsals going? Really good, we’ve been at it since December. I came back from what I’d done prior to December and I think I was a little discouraged with it. You know, you do what you do for so long and after a while there’s this possibility of losing the plot and the connection to why you’re doing it and I found that I was so busy, so I’ve tried to use this opportunity to really get into it and I’ve changed the set and I’ve got something that I think is really great. What exactly can we expect from The Return of Ziltoid? Should we be afraid...? Oh my God, it is a lot of effort, a lot of people and life is really difficult for the most part so I just want it to be fun. I want it to be an escape. I want it to be something that is enjoyable for the audience. I mean, everything tends to get so grim all the time that I would love to just have a good time with a bunch of artists and hopefully the audience will share that. Life’s so short, right? Is it true that you might actually take a break after the Royal Albert Hall? Well I took a break and I didn’t like it. I mean I think the thing is, there’s a difference between taking a break and then just being forced to work. When I stopped I had the assumption that I just needed to stop working completely so I just did it, I went away and I stopped. I didn’t do anything and I lasted about a week before I was like ‘I love what I do!’ I love making music and
DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT
creating puppets and drawing and writing, I love it, but I don’t like being told to do it and I think that’s what I came to the conclusion of with the significant amount of time I took off. If I’m left to my own devices that’s what I want to do. I’ll just mess around until I don’t want to do it anymore and then I’ll go off and build a chair or a table until I get bored of that, then come back and make some new things. It’s when I’m not being told to work that I get the most done. I heard a rumour that you hate milk. Is that true? Yeah, it’s gnarly! I also hate milk. It’s always nice to meet someone else who doesn’t find this weird. Apparently it’s weird. What is it about it that bothers you so much? Have you seen where it comes from!?! That’s gross! I mean, I have a hard time with my body and human bodies in general, it’s disgusting. When I see a cow, I’m really attracted to the face of a cow, I think they’re beautiful creatures but the udders are just so weird. And the fact that there’s this white, mucus-filled crap that comes out of there that’s made to feed baby cows…and I’m going to put that on my cereal!?! Holy crap! I’m just not into it, it’s gnarly. What is your favourite bit of studio gear (for any reason, coffee machine included)? Well I think the studio acts as like one organism to me in many ways, so not any one piece of it means a great deal to me but the combination of it all acts as a tool, so it’s hard for me to take any of those bits apart and single them out as more important. I don’t have a big set up, it’s a small set up. I find the path of least resistance works best for me and I actually work at other studios too with people who are better than me at technical things and make better coffee. I mean I think that too! But if I were to choose one thing, the computer I guess! With the state of popular music is there any chance of another genius concept album akin to Punky Bruster? Well that was the first record I ever did. I mean I think Dark Matters in a way is similar. As I grow I find myself less and less interested in things that I’ve done so I end up repeating things and I get more interested in patterns rather than actual musical things, and that’s what happened last year, and that had to come to an end so today I’m writing something that I think is really interesting for the future. I don’t really spend too much time planning, I just roll with it so…. maybe? Would you ever consider making a full scale theatrical production of Ziltoid? In a sense that’s what we’re doing with the Royal Albert Hall and the Bournemouth show but we have such a strict budget for this stuff that we can’t do it in certain ways. The only way we could do it would be if an investor came up and said ‘I really feel strongly
DORSET MUSIC | MARCH 2015
about what you’re doing, here’s several million dollars, make it happen’ but right now we’re struggling just to be able to make it happen so we’re doing the best we can and we’ve come up with some solutions. So that’s really less of a decision and more of a financial situation. What kind of music would a giant cat made of blue gas that has a claw on the end of its tail and makes you hallucinate when the claw bites your head have written for it? [without missing a beat] It would have a lot of echo on it and a lot of reverb and it would hide its intentions all the way through. And I think that’s the thing that would annoy me about a project like that because it would be so much up to the listener to work out what they were trying to say but you know, if it was a DOG rather than a cat then I think it’s intention would be easier for, well at least men, to understand. It’d be like ‘hey, I’m hungry’ and I could say ‘OK, here’s a song about food’… But with a cat, you’re never gonna know… You’re never gonna f*ckin’ know! And I tell you, after a while it becomes irritating. Y’know, I’ve got a lot of sh*t going on and I don’t have time to play these games, I know you WANT TO EAT but unless you tell me…. I mean, I’m sure it’d look good on a t-shirt but as a concept for an album it would be too much for me to take right now. It would be ultimately frustrating and whatever you came up with, it would never admit to liking it… It wouldn’t. That’s the thing that would irritate me, because you know it does!!! The reaction to the Strapping Young Lad songs at Retinal Circus last year was incredible, would you ever consider touring that band again in the future? Well, I don’t want to so there’s my answer to it right now. I mean, it’s not necessary to re-do. But I mean I may re-mix some of Strapping’s music but I think the thing is, after this whole Ziltoid thing I want to write a symphony and I wanna do it with a whole different world of musicians, people who have nothing to do with rock or metal. Like maybe, animation or cinematic stuff. I think the problem with Strapping and what will probably happen with DTP and Ziltoid and everything is that I just run out of interest in it. The end result of it is predictable after a certain amount of time. It’s a never say never situation but that also has a caveat of me saying ‘I don’t f*cking care’ so who knows? In the past I always said absolutely not, but I’ve updated that answer to ‘I just don’t want to’ however I did find a whole bunch of tapes of Strapping’s stuff and I started working on it and remixing it and that’s interesting, because I like the music. But would I ever let anyone hear it? I don’t f*cking know!

One of the UK’s funniest females, Gina Yashere, returns to her home country from across the pond with her highlyanticipated brand new show this month. A former lift engineer (yes, really), the multi-award winning comedian is now a true headline act the world over, from Japan to Dubai, Hong Kong to Singapore, Australia to Canada, South Africa to Europe and in America, where she currently resides. In fact she is so busy globe-trotting that we had to catch up with her in Borneo, no less! Having made her comedy debut at the Edinburgh Festival in 1996, it’s the countless TV shows she’s appeared on that have made her one of the most recognisable faces in comedy. She’s been on EVERYTHING from The Lenny Henry Show to Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo, Celebrity Fame Academy and Celebrity Come Dine With Me. Stateside, Gina has guested on American TV shows such as The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, Def Comedy Jam , Comics Unleashed, The Rosie O’ Donnell Show and a regular appearance as a
crap psychic on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She has also had her own 1 hour stand up special airing on Showtime. But that’s not all. Did you know she was in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Mr In Between, AND she’s starred on the West-End stage in The Vagina Monologues? After losing 5 stone, Gina released her critically acclaimed DVD Skinny Bitch in 2009 and this helped to propel her into the public eye. But what can we expect from the new show when she storms into town? Laugh Riot will explore it all, Gina-style; her recent move to New York and the ridiculous auditions which made her leave Los Angeles. Her new fear of cats after being terrorized by three super intelligent felines at her friend’s house. Being coughed on, stared at and followed in China, and finding herself in a brothel in Singapore. Gina, as always, has plenty of stories to tell in a way that only Gina can tell them and we couldn’t BE more excited about seeing her live in action…
At what age did you discover you could make people laugh? I didn’t realise I’d be making a living from it, that came much later, but as a kid I was always messing around in class at school making people laugh, and all my school reports said that I was disruptive. Always clowning around in class. Obviously I was doing my work first haha, but yeah, I’ve been doing it since childhood.
Have you ever improvised anything you’ve instantly regretted, and what the hell do you do about it? Yeah, I remember taking the piss out of a guy walking across the room, it was years ago but I remember I said ‘why are you wearing sunglasses indoors, it’s friggin night-time DUDE!’, basically taking the piss out of his sunglasses, and then it turned out it was because he was blind.
What did you do before you turned professional as a comedian? I was an engineer, fixing and building lifts. This is what I did before. If I wasn’t a comedian now I’d be building lifts still. I just thought that looks interesting so I’ll do it’.
What’s it been like for you working in a mostly male dominated industry? Well I used to build and repair lifts before I did this. People always asked me ‘was it really hard?’ but I used to work on building sites where there were no female toilet because I was the only female engineer on site, and I used to walk into the men’s room pulling my hard hat over my head . Comedy in comparison is a walk in the park.
Do you prefer TV or live stand up? Live, definitely. You’re not censored, you can say what you want, so live is always my favourite. But TV serves its purposes because that’s what gets people to come see me live. Just how easy is it to improv, because we imagine it’s not easy at all… Yeah, it’s a skill, because of years of doing stand up and having a certain amount of confidence to be able to come out of the script and mess around, and be able to relax your brain and let whatever comes out of your mouth come out. So yeah, it’s a serious skill to have that’s taken me years to hone. Is it a case of having a huge bank of material to pull from or does it just flow organically? Improv should be improv. Obviously you might use a live bit you’ve used before but the fun of improv and finding a mote of humour from something that’s totally impromptu is much more fun than just using pre-rehearsed lines.
dorset MUSIC | MARCH 2015
Do you feel like you fit in as ‘one of the guys’ then? Yeah, I’m not a typical female comedian, all girly and selfdeprecating, that’s not the style of comedy I do. If it was the mid 90’s they’d probably call me a ladette. Who’s your personal favourite comedian? Ohh I’ve got many favourites. Dave Chapelle, Pat Williams, yeah, those are my two favourites. What’s currently rocking your iPod? I listen to a bit of everything, there’s no particular genre I’m into. I have eclectic tastes. On my iPod I’ve got Florence and the Machine, Midnight City by M83, MGMT, I’ve got some house, allsorts, it’s a mix. Words: Marianne Harris

Your tour bus breaks down on a dark and lonely road in the middle of nowhere at midnight you have no phone signal no wifi what do you do? Hahahaa you’ve got two options the way I see it, sleep or explore. I’m going to go for the latter and see what’s about, you never know what you’d find. Who has the most annoying habit on tour? Nobody really has any to be honest? The worst thing is probably the smell! After a couple of days of hot sweaty shows 9 dudes start smelling ripe. What’s your favourite cinema snack? I’m an ice blast man! I loooove the slush puppies. If you were stranded on a mountain top and one of you had to get eaten, who would be the tastiest? It’s obviously going to be me, I’ve got the most meat on me. If you couldn’t be in Bury Tomorrow anymore, which band would you want to be in? Slipknot. They are the greatest band in the world who wouldn’t want to be in them. What would your super power be? Invisibility! There is so much you can do with that, hahaha! Who has the weirdest irrational fear and what is it? Our Merch guy hates his knees being touched so much that if done in the right way you can bring him to tears. Who would win in a fight-a rhino or a giant octopus? Well that depends if it’s taking place on land or in the sea.... Do you ever give working titles to new songs, and if so what’s the best one been? On the last album we called one Tina The Llama , I loved that one. Tell us why we should come and see you at the Sound Circus in April? Because we party hard and make you circle pit harder!

TEDDY ROCKS music festival returns to Blandford, Dorset on 1, 2, 3, 4 May 2015 at The Greyhound, in the heart of the town. The fourth Teddy Rocks Festival continues on its mission to raise thousands of pounds to help children fighting cancer. The festival does this by showcasing over 26 live rock bands from originals, to covers, to tributes on a stunning outdoor stage. Alongside this there will be over 40 acoustic acts performing on the newly improved second stage during the four day event. A taster of the acts at the early summer festival include Guns or Roses, Dookie (Green Day tribute), Oas-Is, Foo Forgers, The Funky Munks (Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute), Link 182, The Decatonics and Orange Street, plus many more! All proceeds made at the festival from ticket sales, merchandise and donations goes straight towards making a difference to sick children’s lives. Last year saw Teddy Rocks Festival raise over £15,000 in one weekend, bringing the total of the festival’s three-year history to over £26k. The Blandford based charity behind the festival, Teddy20 was created by the Newton family in 2009 to raise money and awareness for children’s cancer, in memory of Ted Newton, who tragically lost his fight to a rare bone cancer at the age of 10, in June 2010. To date Teddy20 has raised over £110,000, making a huge difference to a lot of children and their families. Tickets for the festival are £6 per day or £20 for the weekend + extra for shuttle buses. Available online from www.dorset-music.com and The Greyhound, Market Place, Blandford Forum, Dorset DT11 7EB. Tickets will also be available during the weekend on the gate and the shuttle bus services are available on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday; For further information please view our website http://www.teddy20.co.uk/ Official Teddy Rocks T-Shirts will also be on sale from 28 February, available to purchase from The Greyhound, Blandford and online for £15. This event would not be possible without the support from The Greyhound, Basement Hire, Resn8, The Blandford School, Sunrise Motors, The Impressive Group, CPH Scaffolding, Area 55 tattoo studio, Benjamin O’Brien, Dorset Music Magazine and all the bands who play over the weekend and all of our volunteers.

The incredible, glamorous and beautiful Paloma Faith seems to have bought herself a one way ticket to stardom. The iconic redhead’s trajectory has been permanently set to skyward for the past few years and she’s topping it all off by heading out on her first ever arena headline tour. “I have only done one arena before in London and it is exhilirating.” says the lady herself “It’s scary as well because you’ve got to get your shit together and get organised, put on a good show. I am really excited but also nervous as it is a lot of seats to fill and it is very obvious when you haven’t filled them. It’s not going to be the same as this tour, it will be all bells and whistles. I have a lot of good things planned for the tour, it’ll be bigger and better than I have ever done, with a lot more people involved and visual elements and stuff.” Her previous UK tour sold out completely and many of the arena shows have already gone the same way “I am looking forward to it but I am also concerned I am going to lose my voice” she laughs “But I have a three-week gap which is more than enough, I just need two days for recovery.” Paloma’s current album ‘A Perfect Contradiction’ was one of the huge success stories of 2014, recently being certified platinum. A new edition of the album was recently released, featuring five new tracks, including the fantastic single ‘Ready For The Good Life’ and a live recording of her knockout performance at the BBC Proms. “That was the best moment of my career to date. It was just all of it. I have done quite a lot with that orchestra before, become friends with a lot of them, it was nice to walk on to the Albert Hall stage for the first time and feel like I was with a family rather than being really nervous. I have done a lot of stuff there before where I’ve done one song but it was my first proper own show” beams Paloma “The venue suits me, it wasn’t my choice that it hasn’t happened before.” As each tour gets bigger, so does the production surrounding little Miss Faith. “I don’t find it scary. It makes me feel confident that I have staff. I feel good I have built a little empire.” she explains about her ever growing army of contributors. With a penchant for drama and a keen eye for all things beautiful you can guarantee there’ll be something a little different at her shows. “It’s a bigger band, there are three additional players, there’s a brass section, 12 people on stage including me.” Currently in Europe, then steaming across the UK this month and onto Australia in May, life on the road must take its toll. “We’re on a tour bus most of the time so we all have a lot of different exciting types of pyjama. A lot of onesies flying around. You know in the Big Lebowski how the dude is always in his flip flops and dressing gown holding a white russian? That is basically me on tour. In my flip flops
DORSET MUSIC | MARCH 2015
and dressing gown until two hours before stage then I go and turn into this glamorous thing. The rest of the day I have a pyjama party.” she tells us. Oh, so maybe it’s not quite so terrible then…. “It’s funny, people always say being on tour must be so grueling but I think it is the most ungrueling element of my job. It’s basically luxury to me to get up every morning and have literally nothing to do for an entire day, then do two hours’ work at the end of the day. Two hours to get ready, then two hours on stage, that’s four hours’ work a day. That’s nothing compared to normal days. Yesterday I woke up, started work at 8 and finished at 1.30 am, that’s a normal day for me. I was doing personal training, then interviews for the entire day, then went to the studio to record more music, and I got home at 1.30 am. I just think it’s ridiculous. On tour is like going on holiday. All those musicians who are telling you it’s hard are bloody lazy bastards. It’s easy. And also you get to perform so you get full of natural drugs every night, adrenaline and stuff.” And once she’s done with the UK, she turns her attention to the rest of the world, packs up her onesie and heads off to all four corners. “US tour, Oz tour and European tour as well. I was No1 in Australia and that’s my first No1 in my career, that was for a few weeks so it’s pretty amazing. It’s building nicely and doing well in Holland which is reassuring as it was Holland that broke Pharrell with ‘Happy’ on his comeback. So yeah I am pleased. I am doing a lot more damage than I have in the past.” And we’re guessing it must be a great chance to visit a whole load of new places, getting out and about to explore the cities “I tend not to because when I’m outside London it’s quite difficult for me to go incognito and I find that quite exhausting. I try to really just reserve my energy when I am on tour.” Paloma explains “If I go out and do pictures with everyone in the street all day I’ll be tired by the time I come to perform. I tend to just hide away. Even if I go out in my flip flops and my onesie they do recognise me, believe me, I’ve tried it.” So with all this running around across the globe, are there plans to release any new material, that’s what we want to know! “On this repack I have been working with people I haven’t worked with before and I am really enjoying it. I’m concentrating on that. The next album won’t be ready for a while as I have to get all these tours out of the way and I have also been writing for the repack.” In the meantime we can amuse ourselves with ‘The Perfect Contradiction’ and she’s even found time to record with the inimitable Dame Shirley Bassey “I recorded a duet with her for her 60 years in music album. It’s not a secret bond track, I wish it was.” Maybe that’s one for the future. We certainly wouldn’t count anything out for the wonderful Ms Faith!

PALOMA FAITH
www.rock-regeneration.co.uk I still get a buzz when hearing brand new original music and each month in my “Recommended Music” section I list music I have come across at gigs or artists that have come on the Livewire Live radio show on Hope FM. I urge you all to check some of these artists out. My musical tastes have been well and truly educated over the last few years with not one genre dominating my listening any longer. Why don’t you give something different a chance, you may well just enjoy the change. Local artist Darren Hodson with his band The Southern Companion have just released their 2nd album “1000 Days of Rain”. The album features some great original heart-warming tracks that take influences from many different genres with a wide range appeal. Darren hosted an album launch event at the newly refurbished Thomas Tripp in Christchurch in February. The place was packed and the Southern Companion did not disappoint with a great 90 minute set. Darren Hodson is currently on a European Tour with Rumer. This month cannot pass without a mention of local hero Si Genaro who appeared on BBC TV show The Voice for the 2nd time in February. After performing an impromptu version of the addictive “Chicken Song” the 1st time, Si returned and again impressed the judges with a very emotional new song “When The Last Bird Flies” dedicated to his Mum. He was not picked by any of the judges but got lots of positive feedback and plenty of free publicity along with Wil I.am’s e-mail address. Si was back on stage the very next day performing a full set of his own songs at a charity event in Creekmoor at the Acorn Pub. A great character from Dorset’s music scene supporting other artists and putting on his own events all over the area.

So blown away were we by Between the Void’s performance at the Empire show at the Anvil last month that we simply had to get them into the mag so we could share them with you all. Bournemouth’s answer to all things alternative rock blew the lid off proceedings when they took to the stage with their blend of crunching guitar riffs and emotive vocals. This four piece bring together a huge range of influences from funk, dub and world music to blues, folk, punk and metal. With an album release set for early 2015, we’re certain Between the Void’s unique rock sound will generate momentum and elevate their name within the plugged and unplugged live music scene in 2015. We caught up with them recently to find out more…
Who are you and what do you do in the band? I am John, vocalist and rhythm guitarist How did you guys get together? Oli and I had been playing together for over 10 years, then Oli moved to Tanzania and on his return we decided to form a band. After going through various bassists and drummers we picked up Pippa in 2012 and Marc in 2013 through the joinmyband website. We officially started playing together as Between the Void in the summer or 2013. How did you pick your band name? We all picked a couple of band names that went into a hat, we drew out two and flipped a coin for the final decision! What’s been your biggest achievement so far? We played the Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth last year which was a great experience and later this year we will be releasing a full length album which none of the members have done before so we are really excited about that too! What’s coming up for Between the Void… We are taking a break for two months as Marc is adding another member to his family, then we are back in April with 5 gigs in a month including Lord Nelson in Poole, Culture Café in Three Legged Cross, Talking Heads in
DORSET MUSIC | MARCH 2015
Southampton and Sound Circus in Bournemouth with an album launch party to organise for the summer! We have a couple of new songs to showcase at those gigs which we haven’t played live before as well. If you could go on tour with any band, who would it be and why? Pippa: I’d go with Snot personally - they seem like they are doing it for the love of it and it would be great to see them play every night. I might be alone with that one! John: Soundgarden - they are my all-time favourite band for over 20 years so it would be an honour to support them Oli: Killswitch Engage - just because I would get to see them every night! Marc: NOFX - they have been a band longer than I’ve been alive so it would be awesome to experience what they do day to day Do you have any other talents other than music? John can cook a mean curry Oli can speak moderate Swahili Marc can juggle clubs Pippa is a qualified entomologist Tell us 5 things you think we should know about Between the Void… 1. We have our debut album coming out this year 2. We have a huge range of musical influences including world music, dub, ska, punk, reggae, funk, rock and metal 3. We are avid supporters of the local music scene 4. John has an unreasonably unreliable amp 5. We were nearly called ‘escape the weasel compound’ Why should we come check out your live show? We have a unique rock sound drawn from a wide range of musical influences with heavier and progressive riffs, a solid rhythm section and melodic choruses, we have a bit of everything really! We are also a reliable source for BtV branded guitar picks!
