After taking some time out writing and recording their 3rd studio album, Klaxons are back! ‘HURRAH’ we hear you cry, and yes, so you should be excited, the band certainly are. Since forming in 2005 the London based ‘new rave indie rock’ band have collected a string of awards, including numerous Brit and NME awards, as well as the 2007 Nationwide Mercury Prize, and toured around the globe. Following a European stretch of dates in May they’ll be visiting a handful of small UK venues in towns and cities they may not have played in some years to promote the album release, giving their fans a rare opportunity to see them in much more intimate settings. We were excited to grab 10 minutes with vocalist and bassist Jamie Reynolds to ask him about the highly anticipated new album, and to find out about their clothes shopping habits…. Your new album comes out in June, what’s it called and what can we expect? The new album is called ‘Love Frequency’, and you can expect an electronic/dance twist. We worked with the incredible Errol Alkan (The Chemical Brothers and Gorgon City) to help us produce the album. It’s out on the 16th June and is basically our traditional sound, but in a dance remix format. So, quite a step in a different direction from your last album ‘Surfing the Void’... Yeah, hugely. I think that before we were a solid performance group. This is more about the production, more about synths than being guitar based. What do you think the reaction from your fans will be? We don’t know. We’re making contemporary music, we’ll see what happens. From the live performance aspect everything has been pretty wild playing the new material. I think the new sits very well beside the old. You’re often dubbed as ‘new rave’, explain to us what that means... HAVING IT! The New Wave movement - we took away the ‘w’ and replaced it with an ‘r’. That’s it. We’re making exciting, colourful music and trying to inject some sun. You like to wear quite ‘lively’ outfits on stage, do you have your tour wardrobe picked out? Yeah and it REALLY smells. It’s horrific. We went to a Turkish

Dorset MUSIC | MAY 2014

wedding shop and picked the most outrageous outfits we could find in there. We look like we’re going to a shiny Turkish wedding on a daily basis. What can we expect from this run of shows? Maybe an extra entertainment element. We’ve started talking between songs and making gags during the set, we’ve turned the show into entertainment. It’s just us being loud and exciting on stage. Will we be seeing you at any festivals this year? We’ve been announced for Reading & Leeds, and we’re playing a load of shows and festivals in Europe. We’re sure there’ll be something else announced in the near future but for now Reading & Leeds, and some exciting Euro festies. What’s your favourite stage (indoor venue or festival) to play? We’re playing intimate club shows again, which we love. It reminds us where we came from. We love playing huge festivals, but the small ones are also good. There’s no preference really. Tell our readers in one sentence why they should come to the show in Plymouth? Because it’s a hot ticket, a chance to catch us in an intimate situation, in a smaller venue...and to have your ears blown off! WORDS MARRIANE HARRIS

You’ve been away for a little while, what’s been going on? We’ve been busily working on songs for the new album, which will be ready for release very soon! Billy is producing the new album, so the recording process has been a huge amount of fun, though a lot of work for Billy! We know Bournemouth is excited to have you playing such an intimate venue, what is it that attracts you to smaller shows? We’ve not played any shows yet this year, and we thought playing small venues would be an awesome way back into touring. We started out playing small venues and it’s what initially gave us our love for playing live - we can’t wait for this tour! So will we be hearing a lot of new material? We will be playing some new songs, which we’re always a bit nervous about, but it’ll be interesting to see the crowd response. We’re really proud of the new songs, and are lucky to have loyal fans, who have been telling us how excited they are to hear the new songs! Billy has been leaking small teasers via Twitter, which have been getting a great reaction. When is the new album coming out? No official date yet....sooooooon!

In 2005, Welwyn Garden City three-piece, The Subways crashed onto the UK rock scene with their, now cult, debut album ‘Young For Eternity’ and international party mix tape classic ‘Rock & Roll Queen’. On the International live circuit, The Subways have earned praise from all corners. Five consecutive years at Reading & Leeds festivals along with appearances at Glastonbury and T in the Park cemented their reputation as festival favourites. Their 2011 album ‘Money and Celebrity’ was well received amongst

What can we expect? As Billy is producing the record, it’s been a very internal effort, with the recording taking place at our rehearsal room and the vocals even in Billy’s house. We genuinely have had a lot of fun throughout the process, which I think you can hear on the recordings. The songs are very energetic and have quite a heavy rock sound with pop melodies over the top. You have an extensive history on the festival circuit – do you have a favourite? Very difficult to pick a favourite! It’s always exciting to play on the big stages like Rock am Ring and Reading/Leeds, but I think there’s sometimes something really fun about the small festivals. We’ve played some festivals in Eastern Europe, which are quite small and we’re the only British band and they’re awesome!

critics (Kerrang! described it as “an album packed not only with exuberant and quirkily innovative songs but a sense of energy and defiance’) and got the band onto the coveted Radio 1’s playlist. They went on to play in 25 countries and 100 + cities as part of their European tour as well as headlining their first European festival in Cologne, pulling 60,000 people in front of the stage. According to Billy, Charlotte and Josh, “There is nothing more exciting for us than being on tour. We never want to do anything else. To get up onstage and to play rock and roll every day, to visit new towns, new cities, new countries, new continents and to make new friends along the way, it’s the most amazing experience we’ve ever felt”.

You’re headlining Camden Rocks, are you excited? Most definitely a massive YES! The Electric Ballroom is a great venue and one of the few in London we’ve never played. The line up for the festival is really cool too, so I think the whole day will be a great experience.

But for the last year or so things have been pretty quiet for The

And finally, if you could play with one band (past, present or deceased), who would it be? For me personally....not a band, but an artist. Kylie Minogue is my favourite and has been since I was 5. If we could play a few songs as her backing band that would be incredible! I’m sorry if that’s the most over the top enthusiastic interview you’ve ever read...but that’s genuinely the place I’m in at the moment! Bring on the tour! WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

Subways. They’ve been taking a well-earned rest, working on new material and honing a new live show and now they’re BACK for a string of intimate shows and festival appearances. We grabbed a few moments with Charlotte (bass/vocals) to find out exactly where they’ve been and where they’re headed in 2014…..

DORSET MUSIC | MAY 2014

Have you got many other festivals lined up this summer? We’ve got quite a few, with more coming in too. After not playing any shows so far this year, we can’t wait to jump into festival season! We’re approaching the 10 year mark for The Subways, any plans for celebrating? We have some plans ;) Which can be enjoyed by all our fans!

Festival food is always an issue but apparently if we took all the burgers consumed at Reading festival last year (50,000 say the organisers) then it would take 167 cows to produce all the meat. if we assume 1.2million people visited a festival this year then roughly 690,000 burgers would be made and consumed. That’s 2,300 cows!!! Sorry veggies...

THE BEST OF THE REST... THE BLOCK PARTY, a multi-venue metropolitan festival which takes place over six venues in Lansdowne, Bournemouth, returns for the 6th time on Saturday 10 May. WILD LIFE takes place from 6 - 8 June at a secret location in Dorset….. No acts have been announced yet for 2014. Expect the Low Life Allstars, plus some big DJ surprises, more live music, cabaret and comedy. The 3rd annual COLOURFEST takes place at a secret location in 5000 acres of private lands on the Shaftsbury Estate, at Wimborne St. Giles 6 - 9 June. 13 – 15 June get folked at WIMBORNE MINSTER FOLK FESTIVAL. After its triumphant revival in 2013 the historic East Dorset town will once again be filled with the colours and sounds of folk music and dance from around the UK and beyond. 28 – 29 June sees the triumphant return of FOLK ON THE QUAY to Poole following its successful debut last year. 3 stages of music, ceilidh sessions, morris dancing & more – and it’s FREE! The Isle of Wight is busy again this year hosting I.O.W. FESTIVAL 12 – 15 June featuring headliners red Hot Chili Peppers, Kings of Leon, Calvin Harris & Biffy Clyro, RHYTHM TREE FESTIVAL 18 – 20 July, VDUB ISLAND, celebrating all things VW, 14 – 18 August and BESTIVAL with the musical heroes Nile Rodgers and Outkast leading the pack 4 – 7 September. Rhythm Tree celebrates a diverse mix of world music and prides itself on being the friendliest festival on the island. We’ll leave you to decide which is your favourite! FROME FESTIVAL is back for its biggest year ever. From 4 – 13 July over 200 events take place featuring top names in comedy and music, wonderful creative workshops, hidden gardens, treasure hunt, Frome tunnel tours, classical music, local talent, literary events, story-telling, poetry and much more. The intimate and rather luxurious FESTIBELLY takes place in the New Forest 11/12 July this year. A kaleidoscope of theatre, music, fine foods and feasting. The 25th SWANAGE JAZZ FESTIVAL takes place from 11 - 13 July at a variety of venues around the town. Celebrating its 24th year, LARMER TREE FESTIVAL near Salisbury remains a firm family favourite for its eclectic mix of music, theatre, crafts, storytelling and workshops running over 5 days from 16 – 20 July. Alright, it’s not really Dorset but TRUCK FESTIVAL in Oxford is so good it’s worth travelling for. This year’s festivities take place 18 – 20 July and feature an eclectic mix of rock, folk and indie music. Organised by the TUC, TOLPUDDLE MARTYRS FESTIVAL runs 18 – 20 July. The event offers seminars, and talks during the day and main music evenings.

rock regeneration If anyone tells you not to meet your heroes, ignore them. If you get the chance just go for it. I was lucky enough to meet up with the Northern Irish punk legends, Stiff Little Fingers, after their excellent show at the Wedgewood Rooms on 1st April and all four of them were total gentlemen.

w w w. ro c k- re g e n e rat i o n . co. u k Ironic Encounter

A trip to the Joiners on 4th April for the an EP Launch of the new Saints of Sin EP “Seven Deadly Sins” produced another really impressive display, showing the guys are well on the way to stardom with many future international gigs in the pipeline. In 1991 the Manic Street Preachers played the Joiners in Southampton and as a wide eyed music fan I went along and was blown away by their Clash inspired new wave punk anthems. They returned to the area for a gig at the O2 Academy in Bournemouth on 8th April to promote their two new albums “Rewind The Film and “Futurology”. The gig was an excellent display of what a great band they still are. They produced a near perfect two hour set featuring many highlights including “Stay Beautiful”, “Mowtown Junk” and the 90’s anthem “Design For Life” A new band formed out of the embers of local alternative band Sepia Daze, called Ironic Encounter, came along to the Hope FM radio studio this month for a great acoustic session. Despite only being 2 gigs old the band performed together four original songs that showed a great new direction. CHINNERS

Calling all jungle warriors!

Old skool jungle legend Aphrodite heads up a fantastic line up with assistance from the king of ragga Ed Solo and the killa MC stylings of Ragga Twins. As the man who well and truly put the bass in drum & bass, working alongside Micky Finn on their joint Urban Takeover label, they have released some of the scene’s definitive dancefloor tracks. A techno fuelled tech-house party

Southampton-bred Alan Fitzpatrick leads a pack of excellent house DJ’s at the Winchester. His debut release ‘9 Hours Later’ on his own 8 Sided Dice label has been in the Beatport techno top 10 for some time and has received support from Pete Tong on his Essential Selection show on Radio 1 and John Digweed who asked Alan to remix a track for his legendary Bedrock label.

Coming up to see you and make you smile

A classic English rock band that began in the early 1970s, Steve Harley’s music covers a range of styles from pop to progressive rock. With a greatest hits set jam-packed full of your favourite tunes, add to the bill 90s rockers Toploader and Reverend & the Makers and you’ve got yourself one hell of a party!

Vintage sounding glamourousness

Feisty, energetic and highly talented this band strive to write music that compares with their heroes. The songwriting trio of Emma Baldry, Martin Sloyan and Jon Kearley are the creative heartbeat and in Emma they have a vocalist that could send a house crashing to the floor. Recent single, a cover of The Beatles’ Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, is a powerhouse of soaring vocal goodness. FOR FANS OF: HAIM / SKIN / THE BEATLES

THE WORRY DOLLS

MAY 17 | CHAPLIN’S Electro-Indie that we know and love Over the last few years, Klaxons have somewhat fallen off the musical radar. Their debut rocketed them to fame, but since then, you’d be forgiven if you thought that they were all klaxoned out. However, with their 3rd album on the horizon, the band who expertly blend indie and electro in a marvellous musical milkshake are back, and they mean business.

Veteran guitar maestro

A hugely versatile guitar player, Robbie McIntosh is just as happy playing blues and rock on electric guitar as finger picking acoustic guitar. An accomplished and well renowned slide guitarist too, he’s sessioned for pretty much every musical hero under the sun including Paul MCcartney, Direstraits, Paul Young, John Mayer & Roger Daltrey and played as part of The Pretenders for 5 years.

With one of the finest albums of 2013 under his belt, the Pale Green Ghosts star ends his string of UK shows on the south coast. Brit Award nominee John Grant has one of the smoothest and intense voices on the music scene today. Synthy electro noise provide the background to his dulcet tones.

The founding father of synth-pop

Gary Numan’s influence extends far beyond his lone American hit, “Cars,” which still stands as one of the defining new wave singles. His dark, paranoid vision, theatrically icy alien persona and clinical, robotic sound is echoed in the work of many goth rock/industrial artists. While he is known for his electronic innovations, he prefers real instruments and his live show is definitely not one to miss. FOR FANS OF: ULTRAVOX / THE HUMAN LEAGUE / SOFT CELL

Redifining the troubadour for the 21st century

Formerly a 5-piece band, Passenger has now pared back to basics, literally bringing music to the streets on a series of lengthy busking journeys across Australia, America and the UK. A classic journeyman musician, cut from the same mould as Van Morrison, Neil Young and John Prine, Passenger has the unique ability to move from the humorous to heartbreaking with every song. ONES TO WATCH

the recording of ‘Sparks in the Dark EP’ at a London recording studio and then organised the tour of Croatia. In the UK we are lucky that we have an incredible musical heritage that has a reputation in the continent, so people came to see us just because we are an English band! Are you excited? Very excited. They go crazy for live music over there. It’s also nice playing in new venues and cities. Have you got any festivals lined up this summer?

Formed in 2011, Empire Affair are blazing a trail for their own brand of ‘dark disco’. So far these Bournemouth lads have managed to extend their reach right out across Europe and are fast building a varied fan base across the UK too. Stating the likes of The Killers, The Strokes, Franz Ferdinand, Joy Divison, RHCP, Bloc Party and Smashing Pumpkins amongst their influences it’s a melodic electro-pop indie sound emanating from Empire Affair and we like it. We caught up with them recently to see what’s planned for the rest of 2014…

We are playing at a couple festivals in Croatia, but back in England we are playing at the Bournemouth 7s festival. Who do you guys like to listen to? On our new material I play a lot of synth, which is not something I’ve done before so lately I’ve been immersing myself in Goldfrapp, The Cure, Flaming Lips and the new album by Crosses is incredible. Other than that, we are big fans of Spector, Arcade Fire and the Top Gun soundtrack. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to? Crikey, that’s tough. Editors at Southampton Guildhall is up there. We all went on a band outing to see the Killers at Wembley Stadium last year and Gaslight Anthem was the support act. That was a really good show!

Hi, who are you and who does what in your band?

How did the release of Sparks in the Dark go?

Hello, my name is Matt and I play guitar, synth and occasionally backing vocals. On lead vocals we have Neil, Tom on bass, Jack on guitar and backing vocals and at the back of the stage we have Darren on drums.

‘Sparks...’ was released in July 2012 and went really well, we had a lot of positive feedback for it. I’ve been keeping half an eye on the online sales for it, and its getting picked up in far off corners of the world, which is somewhat surreal.

If you had to describe your sound in three words what would they be?

Are you planning to record more this year?

Big, catchy & intricate. How did you guys meet? Empire Affair was formed in early 2011 from the ashes of a band called Echo that had a number of line-up changes over the years. We all joined the band through various adverts on internet sites and music shops etc. Because we all came from different backgrounds, we all have slightly different approaches and influences to music, which can make for interesting song-writing sessions! What’s your favourite venue to play in Dorset?

We are working on a new EP at the moment, which will be 4 songs that have never seen the light of day. It’s a big risk to release four unheard songs, but it seems to be getting people talking about it. We are aiming to release it in early July. It’s still going to sound like Empire Affair, but we have taken 5 months to develop these songs and get them to be as detailed and developed as possible. There will be a lot of growth on the new EP. Tell us why we should come check out your show… We have gained a reputation for ourselves for putting on a big and energetic show. We have never been a band that just turns up, gets on stage, plays the songs and go home again. We love a party.

I really like playing at Mr Kyps in Poole, it has that intimate feel but still has plenty of space to dance about on stage. The lighting and sounds guys there also know what they are doing, which really helps. I also love playing at the Anvil in Bournemouth, it’s a crazy little sweat box that always gets loud and messy. You’re heading out to Croatia this month. You’ve played there before, how did that happen? That’s a classic tale of being in the right place at the right time. We were spotted by a Croatian music promoter at a gig at Dublin Castle in Camden. He helped us organise
