For over a decade now, and through various recordings, The Cat Empire have carved themselves out a unique place in the musical firmament, as a band with no guitars, with no easily definable style and no corresponding haircut, but a band that can step onto any stage in the world and make the crowd move. More than move, in fact. Make the crowd lose themselves in a frenzy. Bursting out of Melbourne, Australia in 2001 they’re the kind of band that are guaranteed to bring the sunshine to the rainiest of British festivals. You cannot help but move your feet to these You’re currently on tour in North America, how’s it going out there? It’s going great over here! We always have a good time doing this run. We’ve built up a really good following over here in Canada and the East & West Coasts of the USA. Some of the cities and venues feel like a second home to me now because they’re so familiar, especially Vancouver. ‘Current Swell’ are supporting us and create a rockin’ vibe for us to follow! It looks like 2015 is all about touring for you guys, what’s the best thing about being on the road? I feel so fortunate that we have this opportunity to travel to amazing places in the world on a regular basis. Experiencing different geography, climates, food and languages is all part of the perks of touring, as well as being able to take your music from place to place and have people come to the shows. Being a father of 4 young boys, I miss my family a lot when I’m on the road, but it must be said that I enjoy catching up on sleep on the tour bus or in hotels! With 8 of you in the band, plus guests, plus crew that’s a lotta people on a tour bus, how do you cope with being all together all the time or is it just one big party? Yeah it’s a full bus. All 12 bunks are filled. We’ve been doing this for long enough now that we have learnt how to respect each other’s space and privacy when it’s needed. There’s always the occasional bus party after a show which is fun, perhaps not quite as many as we used to do though. Has there been any particular highlight from the shows so far? Vancouver was the first show of the tour. I was blown away with the energy of the crowd. It quickly quells any jetlag that may be hanging over you. Montreal was wild as always. Those French Canadians know how to make noise and have a party! Your music is made for dancing, but who in the band has the best moves? Definitely Jumps! Or maybe Ollie if he is feeling inspired by certain liquids.

DORSET MUSIC | MAY 2015

guys. Seriously, you’d have to be completely devoid of the ability to have fun not to enjoy their energetic and exuberant live show as they power out uplifting, feel good tunes packed with the bounce of ska, the twang of latin, the groove of funk, the complexity of jazz and the simple, laidback temperament of reggae. Call it what you will – we call it GREAT. This team of crazy cool katz hit the O2 Academy in June and we can’t wait to shake our funky groove thangs so we jumped at the chance to speak to drummer Will Hull-Brown as they sped across the United States… Do you have a signature dance move? Yes, it’s called the ‘no dance’. You’ve recently been back in the studio – how did that go? We had one of the most easy-going relaxed recording experiences we’ve ever had I reckon. We went back into the same studio with the same engineer/producer as Steal The Light and we just jammed for a few hours on the first day while the record button was on. I think 2 or 3 songs have come out of those jams! Felix brought songs in as usual too. We’re happy with the path it’s taking. We’re heading back in there in May to do more. What is your approach to writing new material? Often it’s been very Felix and Harry driven, but the most recent recording sessions have been more collaborative, especially with the jamming and relinquishing creative decisions to the producer. That’s been refreshing - not feeling like you have to be in control all the time, but letting someone else call the shots for a change! Your music is categorically difficult to categorise – do you feel like it’s time to do away with musical genres? I think there will always be a place for musical genres, they will evolve however. So in the future I don’t think you’ll see as much of the stock pigeon-holing of styles like rock, funk etc. I’ve always struggled to describe our music! Perhaps it’s time for some new adjectives. You’re back in the UK soon, what can we expect from the live show in Bournemouth? Looking forward to Summer in the UK! What can you expect? To be honest we never do a tour with any particular intentions. It’s always energetic music and plenty of spontaneous sections with crowd interaction. We’ve got more songs now so the setlist is more varied. Might be some really, really new stuff thrown in there too. Bournemouth should dig it! Words: Zan Lawther

We spend most of our summer with a car boot permanently packed, ready for another festival at a moment’s notice. Our top tips for festival survival? Always pack a waterproof jacket and something warm to wrap up in, you can never trust the UK’s weather – baby wipes are essential – never leave the tent without some bog roll in your bag – with gaffa tape and carrier bags you can fix pretty much anything, including leaky wellingtons!

FESTIVAL ROUND UP

Did you know that music festivals are believed to go all the way back to ancient Greece in the 10th century BC? Ethereal deities, rather than rock gods, were honoured though times haven’t changed so much with the recent emphasis placed on looking your absolute best (weather permitting!) in the field. Dry shampoo has been around since the 70’s but last year Asda reported sales were up a whopping 37% as we all struggle to keep our barnets fresh for five days without a shower!

The Block Party, a multi-venue metropolitan festival which takes place over six venues in Lansdowne, Bournemouth, returns Saturday 2 May. The Cursus Cider & Music Festival takes place from 15 - 17 May 2015 in the green open setting near Sixpenny Handley, Cranborne Chase, Dorset. It features 2 alternating stages of music as well as a great selection of cider, ales & food. Wild Life takes place from 5 - 7 June at a secret location in Dorset. Expect some big DJ surprises, loads of live music, cabaret and comedy, wrestling and even a tug of war. The 4th annual Colourfest takes place in 5000 acres of private lands on the Shaftsbury Estate, at Wimborne St. Giles 5 - 8 June and hosts music from the likes of James Frost, The Teak Project, Jonathan Maher and more. 12 - 14 June get folked at Wimborne Minster Folk Festival. After its triumphant revival in 2013 the historic East Dorset town will once again be filled with the colours and sounds of folk music and dance from around the UK and beyond. The Isle of Wight has become a central hub for festival season. This year the island boasts I.O.W. Festival 11 – 14 June featuring headliners Blur, Fleetwood Mac, The Black Keys and the Prodigy, VDub Island, celebrating all things VW, 23 – 27 July and Bestival is back at Robin Hill 10 – 13 September with the likes of Duran Duran, The Chemical Brothers and The Jacksons. We’ll leave you to decide which is your favourite! The 11th Boogie Woogie Festival will be held at Sturminster Newton British Legion 2 - 5 July. From 3 – 5 July Christchurch Festival provides an affordable family festival in the beautiful setting of Christchurch Quay. SWANAGE JAZZ FESTIVAL

Frome Festival is back for its biggest year ever. From 3 - 12 July over 200 events take place featuring top names in comedy and music, wonderful creative workshops, hidden gardens, treasure hunt, Frome tunnel tours, classical music, local talent, literary events, story-telling, poetry and much more. The 26th Swanage Jazz Festival takes place from 10 - 12 July at a variety of venues around the town. Dorset’s most chilled out music festival, Grooves on the Green is to celebrate its 15th anniversary this year, returning to Ashley Cross, Poole in Dorset on 11/12 July. Also that weekend, the 4th Wonky Donk Festival takes place at Halls Road Farm, Lytchett Matravers. LARMER TREE

Celebrating its 25th year, Larmer Tree festival near Salisbury remains a firm family favourite for its eclectic mix of music, theatre, crafts, storytelling and workshops running over 5 days from 14 - 19 July. Alright, it’s not really Dorset but Truck Festival in Oxford is so good it’s worth travelling for. This year’s festivities take place 17 - 18 July and feature an eclectic mix of rock, folk and indie music.

Sticky Fingers (or STIFI to their mates) is a melting pot of reggae, psych, pop and bourbon. Hypnotising you into a swaying trance, then punching you in the face for dancing like a hippy. Their borderline contradictory fusion of flavours speaks to every walk of life, and it’s this multiplicity which makes the world their oyster. Some bands meet from lame gumtree advertisements, while others are formed with a touch of the divine. One Summer’s night some years ago, on a drunken street in Newtown, Sydney, Australia Dylan Frost was wrapping up a fruitless night’s busking. Paddy walked past, when a by-standing bouncer commanded he, “give the bloke some coin, brew!?” Instead, Paddy and Dyz struck up a chat, bonding over mutual hobbies like music. Soon, associate degenerates Seamus Hollywood (lead guitar), Freddy Crabz (keys) and Beaker Best (drums) banded together, and STIFI was erected. Debut album, Caress Your Soul, dropped in March 2013 and the album went into the top 40 in Australia and stayed in the top 50 for 3 weeks. The album tour sold like hot cakes. STIFI sold out every venue that ‘Stralya could throw at them, then they boarded a plane to give Europe the Finger. 2014’s Land of Pleasure cemented their place as Australia’s ambassadors of the chilled out sunshine grooves, if said grooves were all liquored up. This month they hit 60 Million Postcards and as they’re currently selling out shows 10 times the size in minutes in their homeland, NOW is the time to get on board, get in and get sticky. We nabbed a few minutes with fab Freddy Crabz to talk about what life is really like on the road, farts and all…

You’re obviously very successful in Australia, how does it compare coming over to the UK? It’s different you know but definitely exciting. A lot of our favourite bands and music stemmed from the UK so it’s nice to get the opportunity to come. We’ve been to the UK three times now and each time has been a ball. We’re hittin’ The Forum in London as well which is a big step up so I think you lot are starting to catch on. Oz obviously has a much smaller scene, but where we’re from in Inner Western Sydney there’s definitely something brewing. Bands like DMAs, the Preatures, Delta Riggs are all starting to hit it worldwide and we only live a few streets away from each other. I think good Oz music is on the comeback. You’re off to North America for the first time soon, are you excited? Yeah you can’t not be. None of us have even

DORSET MUSIC | MAY 2015

travelled there before and I think the states has the best and worst of what the world has to offer so I’ll be keen to just check it out. We were all holdin’ off cos we thought we might tour there one day and now here we are. It’s been great to see the support that’s been building over there as well. We’ve never played there before or had much association with the US but peeps are goin’ nuts for it and travelling hours to get to some shows. We’ve all got a good feeling ‘bout this one and will most likely follow up with another run soon after I reckon. I’m personally looking forward to hittin’ the south to load up on some fried bird but also keen to get legitimately fried in the west. Land of Pleasure really took off last year and has lead to you selling out tours before they’re even fully announced. How does that feel? It’s pretty surreal considering how we started and where we came from. When we were playing our first

STICKY FINGERS

shows we used to send massive texts and spam all our mates’ emails making sure they’d come. We’d make loads of shitty posters and bomb ‘em up in every semi busy street or naked pole. Though recently we haven’t had to lift a muscle which is a strange thing for us cos we’re used to doing crap, whatever it is. Even with the band’s ongoing success we still haven’t really changed much. We go to the same pubs, drink the same beer, stay close to our true mates at home and still play like shit. The beauty of it I guess is that we can invest more time into the choons and the videoclips which we all do ourselves. There’ll be another one comin’ real soon and it draws a lotta inspiration from an 80s UK ska band but I can’t really reveal too much more now. Sorry. What’s been your biggest achievement so far? Don’t know if we have any one single achievement but we’ve played all the biggest festivals in Australia and have sold out some of the biggest venues in the country. We’ve travelled around Australia and have played for just over seven years so packing out venues is the biggest achievement I reckon. There’s one venue in particular in Byron Bay called The Great Northern. We’ve played there since we were 18 to a crowd of around 20. Now we’re selling out the joint twice without any promotion and no help from labels. We just do everything ourselves and with the help of our management team at Sureshaker. The beauty of where we’re at is that our fans have been there for a while and love our live show. Plenty of bands come and go and I think it’s cos they’re either missing those loyal fans or their live shows stink. Your music is the perfect accompaniment to sunshine. What’s your favourite thing to do in the sunshine? Cold beer, you guys haven’t quite figured that one out yet. I do like comin’ to Bournemouth and just admiring your seagulls. They breed ‘em differently there - they’re like 3 times as big as Oz gulls. Once I was chillin’ with the lads by the beach and saw a gull deep-throat a whole chicken leg like an anaconda. It wasn’t one of those free range chickens either. It was a big caged boy. Crazy.

called Just for You. It’s always fulfilling when you can get one down on the road. Farts can be pretty hectic in the car rides. None of the boys hold back so I feel like there’s always a manky green cloud hovering over us wherever we go. Aside from that there isn’t too much of a worry on the road. We meet some of the biggest leg-ends that we end up building lifetime relationships with. Shout outs to Andy from Bournemouth ya freak we’ll see ya soon! What can Bournemouth expect from your live show? It’s different every show. We always vibe of each other and the peeps around us, but sometimes even the smallest shows are the most fun or the biggest shows feel like a sloppy pub gig. We recently played a festival called Bluesfest in Byron Bay which was to a solid 10,000. Diz jumped into the crowd mid track and when he finally made his way back to the front of stage he got into a scuff with security. They thought he was part of the audience! There were a lot of younguns around and Diz is pretty fresh faced so it’s no wonder they thought he was just another lil raging punter. Like most things it was caught on camera so you can check it on the good tube. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to (not your own)? It’s tough but I’d say seeing Kendrick perform at Enmore in Sydney almost a few years back where we played was one of the best shows I’ve seen. He was younger then and had never been to Oz but he fuckin’ smashed it. For me he’s the most impressive artist goin’ round today. War On Drugs more recently in Sydney was something special. Those guys have been hittin’ it for a while so it’s def inspiring to see ‘em playing some of their best ever shit crinkle faced. Don’t know what our music’ll sound like when we’re their age but I know we’ll be around. Words: Zan Lawther

Catch them live @ 60 Million Postcards | may 14

What are the best and worst things about being on the road? I definitely love the music in the car rides. A coupla trips ago we were pumping alotta Thinktank by Blur which I reckon is their best album. There’s already some influence from that record in the tracks we’ve been comin’ up with of late. I don’t think you realise it at the time but the music you hear on the road subconsciously affects your songwriting and for me, I come up with a lot of ideas on the road. We played a tiny show in Hoorn, Holland and there was a piano there so I tried nuttin’ out an idea goin’ on in my head from the car ride. Paddy and Diz were quick to turn it into a song adding lyrics and a strong hook which laid the foundation for one of our favourite tracks yet

Big Country

www.rock-regeneration.co.uk Get our your camping gear ready as May heralds the start of the summer festival season with plenty of local Dorset festivals happening this month. It all starts on the 1st May at the Greyhound in Blandford with the four day Charity spectacular Teddy Rocks” The 2nd May at Hall’s Farm in Lytchett Matravers hosts a celebration of music, poetry and wellbeing at Calanfest. A new festival filling the void left by the much missed ”Indorset” Festival is three day The Cursus Cider & Music Festival at Sixpenny Handley near Blandford (15th-17th May). On 24th May there is the County Music Fair at the Three Tuns in Bransgore, a brand new festival on this year’s calendar that hosts a very diverse amount of national and local acts. April was once again a very busy month kicking off with a thrilling gig at Mr Kyps with Scottish rockers Big Country who performed a fantastic set in front of a devoted packed crowd. Bournemouth’s Escapefrom’98 returned to the live stage after a short hiatus to support New York Ska band The Toasters at Talking Heads in Southampton. There was a chilled night down at the Anvil with the Lifeboat Records promoted gig featuring one of Southampton’s finest singer/songwriters Lion and The Wolf. The all-acoustic gig reminded me just how passionate singer songwriters can be with some emotional from the heart felt performances. Hope & The New Flower Generation and Laura Goucher graced us with exceptional performances on the Livewire Live radio show on Hope FM. The CMI music Conference at the Cottonwood Boutique Hotel in Bournemouth hosted by Matt Black and Suzy Wheeler was a considerable insight into the music business. In very well structured one day session a host of speakers from the Musician’s Union and Music Glue as well as film makers and promoters give their advice on how to find your way in this difficult sometimes business. The event was attended by a host of well known faces from the local music scene and is a great way of networking. The next event is on Sunday 20th September tickets are just £10 each (Limited to 50 spaces) and can be purchased from Suzy or Matt on 01202 405010.

ones to watch

Singer songwriter Jack Grace bends the rule when it comes to your everyday soulful shoegaze. As likely to take to the stage alone as he is to invite various musicians and friends to join him, his indie fuelled blues is fresh and exciting.

and have not a single soul give a sh*t about who you are or what you’re even singing about. But to play to a room of 70 people with them all singing your lyrics back at you... that’s an achievement.

Describing himself as genre’ly challenged, Jack doesn’t believe in limiting himself from experimenting and expressing so you can hear all kinds of influences in his work, sometimes including strings, sometimes going straight into the bluesy land he’s seemingly most comfortable in, sometimes veering into indie, soul and even a hint of country. So let’s do away with the genres and the attempts to clarify everything and simply say that Jack is a confident, charming performer with a talent for songwriting that should see him on much bigger stages in the future.

Tell us about your next show and why we should come check it out? I’m playing the Skinner Street Church in Poole (9th May) supporting my good friends Fearne. I like to change and challenge myself all the time, so I can guarantee you wont see the same gig from me twice. So if you want to experience a moment that only you would have shared with whom ever is in the room that time, leave your phones and cameras at home and come share something with me.

We were lucky enough to have a few moments to chat with Jack and find out what he’s all about…

What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to (not your own)? I’ve been to many great gigs that are incomparable to one another, but one that always stands out to me is when I saw Ryan Adams play in the Brighton Pavilion solo. I’ve been a Ryan fan for many years and in my option he is one of the greatest songwriters ever. That gig completed me.

Who are you and where do you come from? My name is Jack Grace and I’m a musician from Bournemouth. What made you decide to pick up an instrument and learn to play? I’ve always been intrigued by music from an early age. Music has always been in my house, the first thing I would do coming home from school was put a record on. But the moment I thought “Yep. That’s for me. Whatever this is, I want to do that” was Arctic Monkeys first album ‘Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not’. It just spoke to me. It was in a period where music was so metaphoric in terms of lyrical content. Turner’s lyrics were just raw and honest about every day life from the prospective of a teen living in England. I got where he was coming from. Who are your biggest influences? Without a doubt my biggest influence is Jeff Buckley. My Dad gave me his album (coincidentally call ‘Grace’) in my late teens. Wow, that for me set the standard. I thought, “This is how good I want to be” I had never heard a male voice like that before, the swooning vocal elasticity caught me completely off guard. My opinion of how a man should sing was completely shattered. He’s my Elvis.

If Hollywood made a film about you, who would play you? I’m told I’m like a less charming Brad Pitt if you took away his good looks, money and everything about him. So if Brad was free, him. But I’d settle for Michael Cera. Tell us one thing not a lot of people know about Jack Grace… The Queen once commented on how shiny my shoes were. I’m not even lying. This totally happened. What is on the agenda for 2015? Gig as much as I possible can. Festivals. Maybe another record. Just keep on keeping on and love what I’m doing. www.facebook.com/jackgracemusic

Catch Jack Grace live @ Skinner Street Church, Poole – 9 May 2015 ‘Salisbury Live’ festival - 30 May 2015

If you had to describe your sound in three words, what would you call it? Genre’ly challenged sadness. What’s been your biggest achievement to date? I’ve had the privilege to play at some pretty amazing venues over the years, also meet some of the greats in the industry. But probably the fact people buy my records, listen to them, listen to them again until they know the words, then come to a gig and sing along with me. That’s my biggest achievement. Anyone can play the London O2 (with the right connections)
