new music on a more frequent basis. I think that’s important because we live in a society that is based on instant gratification. Our attention spans aren’t nearly as long as they used to be. There is so much information bombarding us from every angle that it’s difficult to navigate through it all. We just felt that the EP’s would whet the appetite of the listener without being over indulgent. How have you found the reaction to the new releases? So far the reaction from the audience has been amazing! But then again I’m biased. Every artist is going to think that the last piece of work that they created is by and large their best. I don’t know if this is our best. All I know is that I love the songs on these EP’s and I have loved the whole process of creating them and recording them.

Skid Row. Skid muther-flipping Row. They’ve spent the last 30 years banging out heavy metal classics, selling over 20 million records worldwide and endlessly touring the world. They’ve played shows with anyone who is or was anyone in hard rocking music. “When I was 18 I had a band called ‘Steel Fortune’. We ruled! (not really). We had the distinction of opening up for Metallica’s 1st show ever with Kirk Hammett in my hometown of Sayreville, NJ. A bit of trivia for ya’.” founding member and almighty axe-wielder Dave “The Snake” Sabo tells us. A chance meeting with Rachel Bolan at a music store in 1986 lead to the pair quickly forming a friendship and songwriting partnership that would last a lifetime. Skid Row was born. All these years later, the same core principals apply to Snake as a guitar player as well as a songwriter; commitment at all costs. Be true to yourself and have as much fun as humanly possible. Well, why wouldn’t you? You’re in one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time! We had the absolute pleasure of meeting the man himself to get a glimpse into life on Skid Row. Ladies and gentlemen… Mr Dave Sabo…. You’ve recently released the 2nd in a series of 3 EPs ‘Rise of the Damnation Army - United World Rebellion’ – what made you decide to go for EPs rather than a full album release? We decided to go with EP’s rather than a full length release because, in this day and age, things are so much different in the music business than they were 10 years ago or even five years ago. The way we create music, the way we distribute it, the way we monetize it, everything is completely different. People are working harder now than they ever have. People work three times as much for a third of the money. They’re working two jobs, supporting a family, and they have no leisure time of their own. You can’t expect a person to dedicate an hour of their day listening to new album by an artist. That time just doesn’t exist anymore. So we figured that by doing an EP, it’s only 30 minutes of music and it doesn’t take up a lot of someone’s day. And hopefully it will leave the listener wanting more. Plus it costs less to produce so therefore it costs less for the consumer. From the band’s standpoint and a songwriting standpoint it takes so much pressure off of us. Instead of concentrating on writing 20 or more songs for a full-length record we can concentrate on writing six or seven songs. The process is much more enjoyable and it doesn’t burn anybody out. And this way we only spend about two weeks in the studio from start to finish. That is far different from the way we used to do records. Now we can release

DORSET MUSIC | OCTOBER 2014

You and Rachel have been working together nearly 30 years, how does your songwriting process work? Our process is so simple it’s pretty ridiculous! Since day one it’s pretty much been the same; we grab a couple of guitars, some beers, shut off the phone, lock the doors and just have at it. Every time we start writing for a new record it always starts with a conversation. We’ve known each other and have been best friends for nearly 30 years. I know him and he knows me better than we know anybody else in our lives. We speak every day and we hang out nearly every day. So we both pretty much know what’s going on with each other. But when we pick up the guitars and lock the doors, it gets a lot deeper than that. We talk to each other about things that are affecting us in a profound way. And that conversation guides us to and through the songwriting. With these EP’s the conversation gravitated towards why we do this in the first place. And it always came back to the very same thing, that we are still the same 15 year-old kids standing in front of the mirror pretending to be Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons or whomever. And music is our great liberator, our ultimate communicator. Nothing has changed since we first started playing music. After playing music for over 30 years, music is still the greatest form of expression that we possess. Once we got back to the basic ideal of which we started with all those years ago everything just seemed to flow effortlessly. The whole process of making this EP from the writing to the jamming on the new songs to recording, to mixing, to the packaging, everything about it was the most joyous experience I’ve ever had making a Skid Row record. Have you found it a challenge to evolve from your classic ‘youth gone wild’ era sound as you get older? Everything that has occurred with our songwriting since day one has always occurred naturally. Nothing has ever been forced. We are just like anybody else. We’re extremely affected by our surroundings, by current events, by life. And those influences have a direct effect on the music we create. But as you get older your viewpoint may change a little bit, maybe your perspective changes a little bit. Yet we seem to have a certain style of writing that we don’t really diverge from. Which is why the songs on the new EP’s fit seamlessly in with the songs from our first few records. Do you still get as much of a kick out of playing the classic Skid Row songs live? I love playing the old skid Row songs! For me, I’m so proud of everything that we’ve created throughout the history of the band. I get so sick and tired of hearing people say how much of a chore it is for them to play their classic songs. We are so fortunate, as a band, that we have songs that people have connected with. I still am amazed when we play on stage and I look out at the crowd and they’re singing back the lyrics to “18 & Life” or “Youth Gone Wild”. It is the most amazing compliment! And it is still

SKID ROW

FEATURE incredibly humbling. The one thing that never gets lost on us, as a band, is the fact that we are lucky enough to have been a part of something that has connected with people around the world. What we do for a living is an absolute privilege. And it’s because of those people that we are afforded the opportunity to do this. It is the greatest gift in the world. Does it bother you that people still whinge about it not being ‘real’ Skid Row because Sebastian Bach is no longer fronting the band, despite the fact that Johnny has been the real Skid Row for longer than Sebastian ever was? No, it doesn’t bother me. It may have at one point but it’s been so long already that it kind of just rolls off my back. I prefer and choose to live in the present, in this moment right now. The truth is that Rachel and I started this band in 1986. So it will always be the “true” Skid Row as long as we are a part of it. But I understand that people have an attachment to that era of the band. They were able to connect with some of those songs at a particular time in their life. And so when they think of the band they think of that time of their lives. I respect that. As I said earlier I am proud of everything that this band has ever done. From the release of our first record in January 1989 to today, I’m proud of it all. And I absolutely love where we are right now. Johnny has been in the band for over 14 years and he wouldn’t still be in the band if we didn’t all love and respect each other. We all played music because we love to play music. And part of that is loving the people that you’re playing music with. What do you think the future of heavy metal rock n roll looks like? Are there any younger bands coming through you can recommend to us? Hard rock and heavy metal will never, ever go away. The way I look at it, the future is always bright with this type of music. The boundaries are always being pushed and the musicianship is always getting better. It is amazing to me to go on YouTube and see these 9– 10–11-year-old kids playing guitar or drums or whatever at a level that is completely out of my belief system! It’s truly amazing the amount of talent that exists out in the world today. And it’s very inspiring. I just hope that the amount of time and effort that people are putting into their instruments, they put the same amount of time into their songwriting. Because at the end of the day it’s the song that means the most. Imagine you’re putting together your ultimate classic heavy metal era festival line up, who would be on the bill? (regardless of whether the band are still together or not)… In no particular order: Kiss, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Van Halen, Black Sabbath and Ozzy w/ Randy Rhodes, Hendrix, UFO, Angel Witch, Slayer, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Accept, Venom, Metallica, Celtic Frost, Anthrax, Guns N Roses, Motörhead, Rush, Down, Pantera, Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, (should I keep going?). You’ve been touring a LOT these past 12 months, do you have a favourite country or town? Ha ha! We’ve been touring a lot these last 12 years! And longer! At the end of the day we’ve been able to visit so many amazing cities and towns and cultures and people. But New York City will always be my favourite city in the entire world. There is an electricity and an energy in New York City that is unparalleled by any other city in the world. Maybe because I grew up so close to New York City that I am biased. But no matter where I go, I always look forward to coming back to New York City.

DORSET MUSIC | OCTOBER 2014

On this UK leg of the tour you’re hitting some of the smaller towns that are often forgotten on touring schedules. Are there any you’re particularly looking forward to? I’m looking forward to all of them and I’m not even kidding. As far as I can remember we’ve never been to Hull, or Bournemouth, or Stourbridge, or Wakefield, or Buckley or Nuneaton. It’s pretty awesome that after touring the world for 25 years there are still places that we have never been. And the UK has always been amazing and incredibly gracious towards us. We feel incredibly lucky to be able to continue touring to this day. And we’ve always played anywhere that would have us. So having the opportunity to jam in these towns is really exciting! What can those of us lucky enough to have seen you before expect from the live show this time round? We take great pride in performing. We realize that the people in the audience could have done anything that particular night but they decided to buy a ticket and see us! We don’t and have never taken that lightly. It’s the ultimate compliment. And we want to make sure that when they leave our show that they feel that they got their money’s worth. That they spent their time and money wisely. And if they didn’t feel that way then we failed. So every show is immensely important. We’re allowed to play music for a living and we’re able to do this because of the audience. We don’t ever take that lightly and our performance reflects that respect we have for the people out there. And what would you say to encourage new fans to come join the fold? It’s all about the music and having a great time! We love playing these songs and we love performing for people! And I think that shows every night. Music is communal. It’s the interaction of the audience and the band that makes every show unique and special. It’s that experience that makes going to a concert a personal experience that lives with you forever. Plus we have a blast doing what we do and it’s infectious. What essentials are you packing to come on tour with you? The usual, I don’t require a lot. Being on the road for as long as we have you learn to live with a minimal amount of “things”. It’s all about the show so if I have the band, the bus, some clothes, food and some beer then I’m all good. We’re all pretty low maintenance. And finally, what’s the most diva-y demand or argument you’ve ever witnessed on the road? Be it Skid Row or not Skid Row, you don’t have to name names! Whenever huge egos are on display there’s always a certain amount of ridiculousness that follows alongside of them. I’m sure there are thousands of stories of Diva-like moments and I’m pretty sure I’ve been a part of some of them! That being said, I always find it amusing when a famous person gets pissy when he/she thinks someone is staring at them or “ogling” them. I mean, what do you expect?! You’re famous and recognizable and sometimes people are overwhelmed that they’re in the same room or area that this famous person is in. It doesn’t happen every day for people so instead of being pissy, certain “Rockstars” need to be thankful that people even recognize them and give a fuck about who they are!

Would you rather kiss a jellyfish or step on a crab? I reckon a crab because they walk sideways and I think that’s a bit shifty. People need to know that crabs are dodgy. I once saw a crab fighting in a nightclub toilets and the bouncers let him off because he walked funny. That to me is proper wrong. Plus they would be good for air hockey once you’d ripped their legs off What’s the best thing about being a northerner? Northerners are cool as fuck. So everything. Yorkshire is the biggest county and we are all proper people. The rest of everything else is pretenders. Plus, we shout Yorkshire really loud as a proper good chant. I see you’re a fan of Kestrel lager. If you had a real kestrel, what would you train it to do and why? Firstly, I would train one kestrel to recruit and train more kestrels. Then I would plan a series of burglaries in argos because some of the things are kept on really high shelves in Argos warehouse so a kestrel would be able to fly and get stuff and then get more stuff. What colour brick would you rather be and why? I think I’d be a regular house brick because they are notorious for smashing windows, faces, having scary threats tied to them and being the best. Breeze blocks are dicks. Which reality TV show would you most like to go on? Big brother because it’s just like my day normally but with more nobheads. If you were made mayor of Doncaster, what would be the first thing you’d do? Change its name to Devcaster and then sign myself up for Devcaster Rovers as a striker. I would then change all my stats on the cheat screen and I’d end up playing for Manchester United. Do all MC’s drink in the same pub? Are you mates with MC Hammer? I used to do a bit of tiling with MC Hammer actually. 39 Granby Road in Sheffield has got some of the finest grouting you will ever see. What’s the best (non-swearing) insult you can hurl at someone? Bell end. It’s somewhere between a swear and not. What’s your ideal night out? Cans in the park after dark What’s your ideal night in? Cans in the park after dark Tell us one thing about you that people might find surprising... I have written a book and I’m bringing it to my gigs. What? How much? £5, pal. If you could fight any character from Eastenders (past or present) who would it be? All of them. I would line every single one of them up and I would do my 1 inch punch on all of them one after the other until someone said it was hometime.

Brace yourselves as three American powerhouses of nu-metal come crashing into town this month. It’s fair to say that these three bands have been around the block, honing their head-pummeling rock skills to absolute perfection and bringing you the very best of heavy music. All three of these bands have toured together before, they all work the same circuit and have their own friendships across the scene so we thought we’d cut out the middle man and get them to interview each other because let’s face it, who better to ask those behind the scenes questions than the bands themselves…?

Spawning in 1997, SOiL have been through a few changes over the years but continue to melt faces the world over with their crunchy groove metal. Perhaps most famously known for 2001’s smash album ‘Scars’ and hits ‘Halo’ and ‘Unreal’ their 2013 offering ‘Whole’ is just as rocking and their live show proves them to be masters of their craft. Last seen hitting the UK soil (sorry!) with American Head Charge in 2006, we asked bassist and founder member Tim King to put his questions to American Head Charge… How does it feel to be back together after the brief hiatus? Any new plans for a new album? Ted Hallows: It’s been great and yes, thanks to our successful Indiegogo campaign we are actually in the recording studio at the moment, recording the new album. It’s been since 2006 that we last toured together on a UK tour. We are looking forward to the upcoming run with you guys. So are we going to throw all the dishes and tea kettle out the bus windows again? Chad Hanks: Only if the windows open, that said, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Do we need to bring Cameron a bag of white socks for this tour (inside joke)? Chad Hanks: I guess it depends if we are either going to jack off a lot or do our reprisal of The Uplift Mofo Party Plan tour. I have heard many people compare your sound to FAITH NO MORE. I see it a little but there is still a lot of originality in your music. How do you feel about the comparison? Chris Emery: It’s better than saying we sound like Disturbed. What’s your favorite food from the UK? Chris Emery: Is this a trick question? I’m quite partial to white pudding. Chad Hanks: It’s definitely not pizza or taco bell. Anything that’s not from the UK.

UPCOMING SHOW 28th OCTober | WEYMOUTH PAVILION

DORSET MUSIC - october 2014

Industrial-edged metallers American Head Charge burst onto the scene in 2001 with a slot at Ozzfest and debut major label album ‘The War of Art’ which contained the huge hit ‘Just So You Know’. For the next few years they toured with pretty much the Who’s Who list of metal until the death of guitarist Bryan Ottoson in 2005. The band managed to stumble along following this huge blow, releasing a live album and DVD however in 2009 the group disbanded. But in 2011 they came back, refreshed and stronger than ever and embarked on the hed2head tour alongside (hed) PE and Mushroomhead (see what they did there?) and having slammed an Indiegogo campaign promising a new album on the way there’s definitely more to come from AHC! We asked them to pose their questions to Jahred Gomes from (hed)PE… Chad Hanks: We heard your DJ isn’t in the band anymore, what happened? He’s doing other things right now. We will always be family. Chris Emery: Are you going to play anymore reggae on this tour? We close the show with a reggae track for sure. Ted Hallows: Do you guys wanna do another Hed2Head Tour? OH hell yes. Especially now that Mushroomhead has blown the fuck up! It would be huge and Mushroomhead could close every night, which is also great cuz its easier for me to watch their show. Chad Hanks: If you had to choose between being the top scientist in your field or having Mad cow disease which one would you choose? Definitely the top scientist, as I am not a fan of diseases of any sort. Ted Hallows: What was your favorite Robin Williams movie? It’s not what is my favorite Robin Williams movie, it’s what is my favorite Robin Williams character, and that without a doubt is Mork from Ork. I’m an old geezer, so when Robin Williams first came on Happy Days as the Mork from Ork, I totally resonated with his comedy and laughed with him from that day on.

(hed) PE complete this epic line up. Having lead the way for their own brand of gansta-punk or rapcore in the early noughties they effortlessly combine hugely danceable beats with crushing breakdowns that epitomize the sound of the baggy jeans crew of the time. Their latest album ‘Evolution’ was released this summer and has a decidedly Rage Against the Machine feel to it. Jahred from (hed)PE asks Tim King from SOiL… Jahred: Don’t you guys hate touring with (hed)PE? I hear Jared can be quite obnoxious, constantly overcompensating for his insecurities? Quite the contrary. One of the funnest tours we have ever done is the first “Born To Ride” tour we did in Aug/Sept 2012 with (hed)PE. We all love you guys!! How has it been with Ryan back in the band? It’s been great. It feels like SOiL again. The albums we did without him (True Self/ Picture Perfect) were great albums, but it just didn’t have that classic SOiL feel to it. The new album “Whole” definitely brings us back to that original vision we had when we started. We are also getting along great and just having a real good time playing together. How about doing “Born to ride 3”? Bring it on!! We had such a great time on the first 2, let’s do a 3rd! Tim also works at (hed)PE’s label Pavement Entertainment. How did that come about? I have always liked the band. When we toured together and got to be friends I liked the band even more. We started talking about their current label situation and what they wanted to accomplish on the new album and my ideas on what they should do were exactly what they wanted. It turned out to be a perfect situation. I think they have made one of their best albums and definitely the perfect album for this stage in their career. I’m really proud of them. This will be our first time playing Europe together and sharing buses. What can we expect? Many laughs and good times…..and yeah….. PLENTY of drinking!!!!!

Brace yourself Southampton, for the countdown has begun. The south coast’s premier alternative one day festival is revving its engines in preparation for what is set to be the biggest and best Takedown Festival yet. Originally born in Salisbury, 2015 marks the sixth Takedown and the fourth in its current home at the University of Southampton. Showcasing the best in rock, metal, tech and punk the festival prides itself on bringing you the best in up and coming artists, as well as smacking you square in the face with huge names. You Me At Six, Mallory Knox, Skindred, Don Broco and Lower than Atlantis have all graced its stages over the years and we’ve had a sneaky peak at this year’s line up and you will NOT be disappointed. Its indoor setting means that despite being the first festival of the season, you won’t need your wellies and there’s not a portaloo in sight as 2,000 music fans take over the custombuilt fun factory that is the University of Southampton

Student’s Union. Heralded as one of the UK’s best organised festivals, both by punters and the bands themselves, the team behind Takedown fest work tirelessly to ensure you have a non-stop party with 10 hours of live acts across a whopping five stages, all followed by the infamous aftershow which allows fans and artists to carry on into the small hours, without having to leave the site. Now we can’t give too much away just yet but what we can tell you is Takedown 2015 will be brimming with even more fun than this year (and we should know, we were there, we even had our own Introducing Stage!). More, more, more is, in fact, the order of the day….MORE bands, MORE stalls, MORE activities and EVEN MORE PARTY. And for a limited time only you can get in on the action for a ridiculously reduced price of just £20 when ‘Uber Early Bird’ tickets go on sale on Octber 3rd. But don’t just take our word for it…..here’s what some of the bands have to say...

“We loved Takedown festival, it was our second time playing and it was a pleasure. The staff and organisers smash it every year and the crowd are always up for it!” Joe James, Blitz Kids “There’s tonnes of great bands on the bill and it’s awesome to be asked to be a part of the festival” Tom Marsh, Baby Godzilla “Takedown took a lot of festivals to school on how run a festival. Line-up to ticket price ratio should make the big ones hang their head in shame. We were honoured to be invited back!” Stu Henshall, Black Futures “We were only on our second gig by the time we hit Takedown 2012, the vibe was awesome, the fans were tuned-in - everything was perfect!” Sam Matlock, DEAD! “Last year’s Takedown was awesome for us, Southampton has always been one of our favourite places to play even when we first started out and we were playing to no one, we always wanted to play Takedown fest so to play two years in a row is rad” Matt Sharland, Idiom

There has been a hive of activity during September as myself Gemma Varnfield and a carefully selected team of volunteers are preparing for possibly the biggest charity event of the year in Bournemouth... The Bournemouth Oxjam Takeover! This event is put on each year to raise much needed funds for a host of well deserving projects throughout the world. This year’s event will feature 6 local music venues Chaplin’s, Mr Kyps, Inferno, The Anvil, Sixty Million Postcards and The Winchester Pub. They will each of them to host a very different mouth watering line up of largely local talent on the same night. Music fans will be able to go to the Oxjam Bournemouth website www.bournemouthoxjam.co.uk and purchase a wristband that will allow you entry to all of the venues for just one price. The wristband will allow you free bus travel on the Wilts & Dorset ‘More’ buses throughout the day and into the early hours of the morning to get you home. We have worked hard to get just about every genre of band to fulfil every possible taste. The line up includes some of the area’s best known acts as well as a few well chosen acts from further afield. There is Dorset Music Awards winners Peace, Love & Gloves along with Disco’s Out (Murders In), Empire Affair, The Bamboo Vipers, Sansara, Saturday Sun, Soulhole, Brothers Grimmer, Four Fighters(Foo Fighter Tribute), Saints Of Sin, Galahad and simply lots more. Keep your eyes posted on the Bournemouth Oxjam website and the Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/bournemouthoxjam where we will be posting the complete list of all the acts performing on the day as well as how to get your wristband. The date for all of this is Saturday 18th October and each of the venues will be opening early so we can give extra value for money with masses of live entertainment on offer. Myself, Gemma and the team are really looking forward to welcoming you all on the 18th October to what will be a fantastic day not to be missed.

With over 2.5m record sales, 15 platinum discs, 32m YouTube views, awards, a string of sold out tours and ‘The Shocking Miss Emerald’ entering the charts at #1 it’s fair to say that Caro Emerald is having a good time. Her retro-pop sound is a mix of vintage jazz, beats and pop that’s rooted in the past yet thoroughly modern with its samples, scratching and beats blending with the rhythms and style of yesteryear.

OCT 17 | HALO Balls out rock n roll

Local hard rocking heroes Western Sand take the helm at Chaplin’s once more, bringing their wailing guitars, stonking riffs and searing vocals with them. Having toured with the likes of Black Star Riders (Thin Lizzy) they’ve learned from the masters so it’s well-crafted old skool rock n roll infused with a new lease on life. So why not bust out the drainpipes, big hair and fist pumps because it’s time to get RAWKED!

THE THREE DEGREES

The Three Degrees are a female soul and disco vocal musical group, formed in 1963 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although it has always had a 3-girl lineup, the group has undergone numerous changes, and a total of 12 women have represented the trio so far. Having made their way through the swinging 60’s, the disco 70’s, 80’s pop and survived the 90’s they’re still touring their beautiful vocal stylings. Hailing from tiny Lincoln, comes the hard working, melodic hardcore quintet Climates. They’ve taken the hardcore scene by storm with a huge number of shows with the likes of Parkway Drive, A Day To Remember and Architects. Climates’ unique melodic hardcore, combines the urgency in Wes Thompson’s voice and heartfelt lyrics, backed by the explosive music hammered out by the rest of the band. NOV 19| O2 ACADEMY

Arriving after the peak of Brit-pop the Kooks revived that catchy clatter in the mid 00s with a smooth blend of accessible pop and rock. Success came quickly and they were one of the must-see artists of the time although they struggled to maintain their momentum. Their latest offering ‘Listen’ branches out into soul, dance and new wave while retaining the love for guitar based rock.

RUARRI JOSEPH

A breath of fresh air for singer/songwriters

Cornish singer-songwriter Ruarri Joseph (his first name is pronounced like ‘brewery’, in case you were wondering…) creates an inventive fusion of blues, rock and soul, inspired by the likes of Tom Waits, Elliott Smith and Django Reindhart. You can almost smell the fresh sea air from Joseph’s hometown of Newquay in his music. Since sgoing solo he’s achieved lots of praise for his relaxed acoustic songwriting.

New album 48:13, their 4th consecutive #1 album, receivied fantastic reviews across the board. FOR FANS OF: KAISER CHIEFS / KLAXONS / FRANZ FERDINAND

NOV 25 | BIC UK alt-rockers

Combining post-hardcore with anthemic pop-punk, Norfolk sextet Deaf Havana burst onto the scene to fly the flag for British alt-rock in 2005. Starting out with two sets of vocals and a much heavier sound, they’ve now developed a much more considered pop rock sound with an acoustic edge and flawless vocal harmonies. It’s easy to see how they’re picking up fans in droves with their uplifting tunes.

ones to watch

How would you describe your music to someone who had never heard it before? Classic style heavy metal with a modern take on it. If you like your heavy metal the old fashioned way then (hopefully) you will love us. Formed in Portsmouth in 2010, Dendera have already gained themselves a reputation of being one of the most promising NWOBHM bands in the south. After putting out their first EP in 2011, debut full-length The Killing Floor was released in 2013. Crafting an assault of Heavy Metal with a modern edge, each track is led by vocalist Ashley Edison’s superbly executed melodic wails and screams, backed by fantastic riffs, piercing solos and high energy rhythms that put the band right up there with their peers. Their fantastic sound and live capabilities have given Dendera the chance to impress on the big stage, playing as support to some legendary artists including Saxon, UFO and Alestorm – as well as doing shows with Ill Nino, Firewind, Wolfsbane, Primitai and a full UK tour with Gloryhammer and with a new release planned for summer 2015, Dendera are continuing to breathe new life into the Heavy Metal scene. We caught up with lead vocalist Ashley to find out a bit more… Who are you and what do you all do in the band? Well, we are Dendera, a five piece heavy metal band that features me [Ashley] as the singer, my brother Bradley on Bass, Steve Main and Tony Fuller on Guitar and Andy Finch on Drums. What made you first want to start making music? Well, for me I first listened to rock / metal music around the early 2000’s, really got into bands such as Foo Fighters, The Darkness and Linkin Park, and shortly after I got into heavier stuff such as Metallica and Iron Maiden. It was then I decided I wanted to be in a band. For the other guys they all had different bands that started them off, ranging from Maiden, Dream Theater and earlier stuff like Thin Lizzy and Queen. Who are your biggest musical influences? The Iron Maiden link comes up a lot, but we just embrace it now. So I guess you could say them; I am a huge fan of Bruce Dickinson too. We also get inspired by many other bands such as UFO, Saxon and Judas Priest.

DORSET MUSIC |OCTOBER 2014

Are you recording or writing at the moment? We are currently finishing the writing stage of the new album, working on demos at the moment and will be recording it very soon. What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2014? Well, we will be playing the odd show here and there, but I think the main goal is to get this album finished so we can kick next year in the arse. Who’s been your favourite band to support and if you could tour with anyone, who would it be? Saxon is my favourite band we have supported by far. We have supported some other incredible acts like UFO, Soulfly, Firewind, Alestorm, but the Saxon guys were so welcoming to us and it was very surreal. As for bands to tour with, I am certain I speak for everyone when I say either Metallica or Iron Maiden, also Kiss would be special. Tell us something about each of you that we might find surprising…. Well, Steve is a golf expert, Andy plays in several cover bands, Tony has an obsession with Cottage Cheese, Bradley often gets mistaken for Jack Black, and I am a huge Doctor Who nerd and once told a girl I was Spider-Man to impress her (I was 6 by the way). Who in the band would make the best girl? I think Tony would be the one that would be the best looking as a woman, but I am pretty vain, so maybe me? And finally, why should we come check you out at a show? People should come to see us because we give 110% at every show we do. We take a lot of time working on our live performances, so we want to prove to people we are a good live band. So come see us for a very loud, energetic and fun metal show. We promise to give it everything, and leave you and the venue a sweaty mess. Words: Zan Lawther
