Also this month we chat to pop-folksters Hudson Taylor ahead of their Festibelly appearance plus a chance to see them for yourself courtesy of our Festibelly ticket competition. We have an exclusive interview with legendary electronic music pioneer Gary Numan and we get to ask Katy B some silly questions. The New Forest’s intimate and luxurious festival Set in the glorious New Forest, Festibelly is fast becoming one of the UK’s most charming, intimate and grassroots festivals. A kaleidoscope of music, theatre, arts, fine food and feasting awaits those that journey to Lymington this July. With a focus on local produce and homegrown talent festival goers will be welcomed with open, loving arms into this most relaxed affair. Now in its sixth year, Festibelly is once again providing music lovers with an eclectic bill jam-packed with up and coming names and break out artists alongside some firm festival favourites. Already announced are the fantastic Hudson Taylor (we chat to them a little later on). Brothers Harry and Alfie have been honing their stirring folk-pop sound over a series of rapturously-received singles and are on the verge of a big breakthrough, having amassed a huge underground following. They’ve toured with Jake Bugg and Kodaline and supported the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park. They are currently finishing their debut album, which will be released in the autumn so you can bet your bottom dollar you’ll be seeing them everywhere real soon. Also on the menu for this musical feast is Reggae DJ icon David Rodigan, joined on the dub themed Saturday afternoon by Bristol collective Jus Now and ‘Belly favourites Reggae Roast. The line-up also contains hotly tipped Femme and Mighty Oaks and welcomes back raucous folk troubadours Skinny Lister and electronic-soul trio Dems. Festibelly hot-picks Mausi, Wild Smiles, Ginger & The Ghost and Lexy & The Kill are names you will also be hearing a lot more from soon. As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting new and emerging local artists, Festibelly has been busy hosting a series of warm up events across the New Forest and Hampshire region. Bands and musicians of all types were selected to play across various local venues, all vying for the chance to join the bill for the Festibelly weekend. But it’s not all about the music. 2014 sees the addition of a brand new bar stocked with fine festival tipples, from craft ales to decadent cocktails. A new dining experience is offered for those wanting to get off their feet and indulge in an extravagant three course feast, prepared and hosted by some fantastic New Forest foodie institutions, alongside culinary masterclasses and belly-rumbling bake offs. The Owlery, a space dedicated to wee Festi-critters, returns bigger and better in 2014 ensuring that the festival-goers of the future are well looked after throughout the weekend.
What made you first decide to start a festival? Why the New Forest? We had a chat with the lovely Andy Bell, founder of the Festibelly magic and all round nice guy because, well, who else is better placed to explain to us exactly why we should be booking our tickets and heading down to Lymington this July? What made you first decide to start a festival? The festival actually started as a birthday party - a few friends’ bands performing and a couple of tipis in a field, and then combined with a general hunger for a more intimate and thoughtful festi, starting our own seemed like a no brainer! Why the New Forest? It’s an absolutely stunning area and yet it’s amazing how many people who live in the UK have never explored it - there’s a real sense of adventure driving through the Forest with the wild ponies and cattle roaming, like stepping back in time and completely escaping what you left behind - and that’s exactly the experience you want when going to a festival. Traditionally you’ve had a keen eye for booking bands on their way up. Who should we be looking out for this year? Hopefully all of them! We always make a point of supporting new talent and generally just booking music that we love. If I had to pick some personal faves I’d say Charlie Cunningham is definitely one to watch - amazing songwriting and completely unique sound. Dios Mio as well - totally captivating & emotional but with a grungy edge. You’re also a supporter of local artists. Tell us about the ‘Festibelly Local’ shows… Festibelly is first and foremost about supporting local artists and the general community, as much as possible. By hosting the local warm-up events it’s meant we’ve discovered so much incredible music that otherwise we wouldn’t have had
the opportunity to hear first-hand. We’re programming a stage at the festival for the whole day with the artists that we’ve been able to discover! For festival-goers that have never been to Festibelly before, what can they expect? A completely grassroots festival, bite-size portions of what, we think, makes a great festi - eclectic and fantastic music, totally relaxed and friendly atmosphere, top quality food and music, weird and wonderful venues and plenty of silliness. Can we bring the kids and what is there to keep them entertained? Definitely! Kids are very much a part of the festival and this year we’re expanding our kids’ area with more silliness - plenty of workshops, fancy dress, kids’ theatre etc. Is there anything else new for 2014? Yep, we’re teaming up with The Craft Beer Co. for a brand beer tent and venue, which will be a chilled spot to sample a range of amazing craft beers and also witness some of the more alternative entertainment: comedy, cabaret, theatre and more. And finally, how much do you love your job? What would you be doing if it wasn’t Festibelly? The day that I start calling this a ‘job’ I won’t be doing it! WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

There is an endearing simplicity to Hudson Taylor that underpins almost everything they do. Why did these two Irish brothers begin playing music together? Well, because their father told them to. Why did they start busking? Because their mother had lost her job and they wanted to make some money. And how do they write their deceptively straightforward folk-pop songs? Well, there isn’t an easy answer to everything. There is a refreshing lack of conceit to Harry and Alfie – Hudson Taylor is their surname– that’s at the heart of their music. Theirs is a breezy easy-come-easy-go approach, perfect for the forthcoming festival season. Growing up in Dublin, they were brought up in a house that was rarely silent. Their dad, a trumpet and keyboard player in a ‘60s brass band, would feed them a cocktail of classics and jazz standards. Harry began playing the trumpet aged 3 and had moved onto the piano by the time he was 6. Alfie, meanwhile, was an Irish champion dancer as a child. But their story really started on a caravan park not far outside Venice. “We played a White Stripes song, a Beach Boys song, Wonderwall, stuff like that,” says Alfie. “We got drunk for the first time, stayed up really late and people really enjoyed it. That was our first musical bond.” When they got back to Dublin they set up a YouTube account and began So, you’ve got a pretty busy summer ahead! How does it feel to be in such high demand? Harry: Ha it’s great! Yeah we’ve got a mad summer ahead of us. I can’t wait, it’s going to be a blast though. Alfie: Yeah, we’re really looking forward to it - it’s basically a summer full of festivals and then our album is out in September, so exciting times! Do you actually enjoy going to festivals? Alfie: yeah we love them, it’s the energy - it’s just that whole summer festival feeling, you can’t beat it. We’ll have the lads [in the band] with us too and we’re all really good mates so it’s just like a constant road trip where you’re playing music and having a laugh. Has there been a particular moment where you’ve thought ‘this is it, this is actually going to happen’? A moment where everything suddenly changed…. Harry: I don’t think for me there was a particular moment per se because everything we’ve done over the last few years has been about getting to the point where we’re ready to release our album. We’ve done 4 EPs, been on tour and played festivals and worked with some amazing people so it’s all led to this point where our album is actually ready to go, and that feels really, really exciting. Alfie: Yeah I’d say probably now feels like the most excited we’ve been so far, the album is there, it’ll be released in September and people will be able to hear it and get a sense of the journey we’ve been on over the last few years I hope. Do you two ever argue? Alfie: No not really at all, the odd time we’d disagree about something but nothing major. What’s the worst thing one of you did to the other as a child? Alfie: Oh God we were brutal to each other when we were little, just ask our mum! Not sure what the worst thing we ever did to each other was but whatever either of us did we always both got the blame. I think because we’re so close in age and we went everywhere together our parents just figured no matter which one might have started something it was likely we were both involved so we’d both get punished regardless!

uploading videos of their covers. Busking seemed a good option; they already had the songs and just needed to take them out of the house. Soon enough, and via a sign they erected whilst playing one of their busking sessions, more and more people were viewing their YouTube channel. All the while, they’d begun writing their own songs too. “We’d done a song that was just us, stripped-down with no drums. There was something about it,” explains Alfie. “Even though we sometimes have drums now, that song is where our sound came from. It was just honest.” Their debut Battles EP, released in August 2012, made an impact in Hudson Taylor’s quietly compelling way, going to number 1 on iTunes Ireland and no.14 in iTunes UK purely as a result of word-of-mouth. They play their acoustic guitars with a buzzing vibrancy, their songs all static strums and lovelorn vocals driven with the sort of desperate, hopeful energy that only young men whose dreams are coming to life possess. Their lyrical themes go from the “typical lad stuff – girlfriends and ex-girlfriends” to the struggle of moving to London last year. “We want to be known as a live band,” says Harry. “We plan on touring constantly… forever.” For the brothers who haven’t known anything else for the past five years, sitting still is not an option. A brave new world awaits and it all kicks off this festival season at Festibelly. Harry: Ha! True! I think it’s probably taught us to always have each other’s backs though in a weird way! What’s the best thing about making music with your brother? Alfie: I think we’ve developed a strong understanding and respect for each other’s strengths as musicians and neither of us would ever deny the other one their input or ideas creatively, I’m not sure if that’s just because we’re brothers but I suppose that helps! Harry: Yeah and I think working with your family is actually great because you don’t have to have any airs and graces in front of each other or worry that you’ll offend the other one because they know exactly who you are. It’s also nice that wherever we go and whenever we meet new people we have each other so it’s never lonely! You moved to London last year, how’s that been? Harry: Yeah it’s great, we’re really settled in now. It was hard in the beginning leaving our family, living on our own and getting used to that, but we’ve got a great network of friends and people around us so we’re really comfortable here now. There’s still nothing like going home though! What one thing do you miss most from back home in Dublin? Alfie: Our family and friends obviously, and then just the people in general mainly - there’s nothing like the way people will talk to you and tell you stories at home, it’s magical - you can get in a taxi or get talking to someone in the pub or waiting for the bus and the next thing they’ll have you in stitches laughing or bawling your eyes out. It’s hard to explain but there’s nothing like it. Harry: And Guinness of course! It just not the same outside of Ireland and it definitely helps people’s ‘stories’ get a little more interesting! Ha! When you were playing covers, what was your favourite song to play? Harry: We’ve always loved playing covers, it comes from our busking days but some of our favourites would be Irish songs like ‘Monto’ and ‘Rattlin Bog’ they’re just so much fun to play. Why should we come and check you out this summer? Harry: Well our set will basically be all album songs so it’ll be a good preview we hope! WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

FOLK ON THE QUAY is a free folk music festival in Poole with four outdoor music stages, two ceilidh dances and over twenty teams of morris dancers in the streets overlooking Poole’s lovely Harbour. All the local pubs get involved which means plenty of great food and great beer!

Did you know that music festivals are believed to go all the way back to ancient Greece in the 10th century BC? Ethereal deities, rather than rock gods, were honoured though times haven’t changed so much with the recent emphasis placed on looking your absolute best (weather permitting!) in the field. Dry shampoo has been around since the 70’s but last year Asda reported sales were up a whopping 37% as we all struggle to keep our barnets fresh for five days without a shower!
Saturday 19 July sees Jurassic Rocks Music Festival at Grove Playing Fields, Portland. Headliners The Wurzels are joined by The Skimmity Hitchers, Guns of Navarone, The Other Guys, The Devils Rejects, and loads more. Forever Sun Festival takes place on new dates 26 - 27 July a t Came Down Estate, Dorchester. The first acts confirmed are Professor Elemental, Estimators, Exit Calm, Dub Pistols, Peyote, Jayce Lewis, and The Dolmen with many more still to announce for the festival’s five stages. Camp Bestival returns to Lulworth Castle 31 July – 3 August with a Circus theme. Family focussed with over 100 things for kids to do and special emphasis on fancy dress, this year’s headliners are De La Soul, James and Basement Jaxx. Saturday 2 August is the 20th anniversary of Stompin’ on Quomps Smooth Jazz Festival on Christchurch Quay. Possibly the craziest of all the festivals BoomTown Fair literally divides an entire town into a melee of the weird and wonderful – with a different fancy dress theme in each part of town, put on your explorer’s hat and dive in 7 – 10 August at Matterley Estate. Wareham Music Festival returns for a 6th year a little earlier this year, 8 – 10 August 2014. It’s still absolutely FREE though! The bi-annual The Music and Merriment Festival returns offering two days of musical entertainment, kids club, circus skills workshops, fire juggling, hot air balloon display, local artists, food, an inflatable county pub at Spetisbury Rings, near Blandford 15/16 August. Purbeck Folk Festival is a family friendly event set in the Purbeck Hills from 21 - 24 August at Wilkswood Farm in Langton Matravers, near Swanage. GARY NUMAN
Gary Numan has been quoted as an influence by everyone from Damon Albarn to Kanye West and Wu-Tang Clan; Beck to Queens Of The Stone Age; The Foo Fighters to Nine Inch Nails [the latter inviting Numan on stage at several shows in 2009; Prince to Lady Gaga. While Numan’s unique, pioneering style continues to connect with fans from the worlds of Metal, Hip Hop, EDM, Industrial and Indie, he remains as focused as ever in pursuing his own singular vision. His new album, SPLINTER [SONGS FROM A BROKEN MIND] which came out in October 2013 - utilises many new sounds and ideas but is still very much a Numan record. Perhaps it’s the voice, one of the most distinctive in rock music. It’s often associated with machinery and icy alienation, but for those who are drawn to his music, there are strong emotions within the electronic noise. And clearly, for a man whose career started in the early 70’s and is STILL on tour the connection between Numan and his fans works. We caught up with him during the New Zealand stint of the tour to dig a little deeper into the man behind the façade… What does it feel like to be in your 4th decade of such a successful career? It’s all I’ve ever known really so it feels completely normal. I signed my first record deal when I was 19 and I’ve been doing it ever since so making music, being in a band, has been my life. It feels good to still have a career after so many years, I guess. I’ve seen an awful lot of bands come and go so I’m very aware of how precarious it can be, even if you are lucky enough to have a lot of success at times. For me things have just got better since my lowest point in 1992, each year being stronger than the one before, so I’m happy. If you could go back to when you were starting out and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be? Strangely enough it would be to not listen to advice. Many years ago I went through a difficult period where things weren’t going so well and I lost faith in myself, in my own vision of what I wanted to do, and I started to listen to advice. Biggest mistake I ever made. We seem to be surrounded by people who all think they know what’s best, what we should do with our careers. In my experience, bitter experience that is, none of them knew what they were talking about and it almost ruined my life. I’m not good at taking advice anymore. Your latest sound is pretty dark and industrial, was that a conscious thing you decided to try to achieve or did it come about naturally as the album progressed? It started in 1994. I made the first of my dark and vaguely industrial albums back then, called Sacrifice, and I’ve travelled ever further among that path ever since. It was less a conscious decision at the time and more just a return to writing exactly what I wanted. I had made a very bad album two years before and my career seemed hopelessly lost. I went back to making music for the love of it, from the heart. Music made with no thoughts about commercial success or about trying to keep a record label or A&R man happy. I went back to doing it as a hobby as I thought my career was finished. As soon as I did that the music was darker, heavier and more aggressive. As soon as I abandoned all thoughts of trying to save my Pop Star career the music became more interesting and I headed up a different road. How have you found the reaction to Splinter and how do you feel about it as an album? The reaction to it has been nothing short of amazing, which obviously comes as a great relief. Many of the reviews talk about being the best album I’ve ever made so I certainly can’t complain about the reviews. It was album of the month in a number of big magazines across Europe and the US so it was all very satisfying and exciting. It really helped my confidence, which was cool for me as I’ve often struggled with that. Personally I’m very happy with the album and I also feel that it’s one of the best, if not THE best album that I’ve ever made. I’ve made about twenty albums now so to get that kind of reaction, especially when the album is a dark, heavy, brooding kind of thing, was very special. Most people that have been around as long as I have tend towards bland middle of the road material, or they go the nostalgia route; I’ve done neither, quite the opposite actually, and yet I get the best reviews of my life. It’s a good position to be in.

What’s your favourite way to listen to music? I don’t really listen to music. I don’t like it on in the house as the house is noisy enough with three young children. I don’t like it on in the car as that’s the place I tend to do all of my thinking. I have a lot of ideas come to mind when I’m driving and noise ruins that. I do go to gigs reasonably often but, generally speaking, I don’t really listen to music much at all. I work in the studio a lot, I play live a lot, so when I’m not doing those things I like to stay well away from music. Do you still enjoy playing your massive hits live? If I’m honest, they’re not the high points of the night for me but it’s okay, I’ve just done them so many times I guess. I do try to rework them from time to time to put some new life into them, more for my benefit than anyone else’s. But, it’s always nice to see the crowd react to those songs so I have no problem with playing them. What can we expect from the live show on this tour? Is it big production or stripped back? This is an ‘intimate’ tour, playing those places more out of the way that we mostly didn’t visit on the first Splinter tour, so it’s a smaller, closer affair. The last tour had the big light show, with the video screens and the whole spectacular vibe going on, which was great, but I wanted this one to be different. We played some shows in Europe that were smaller and I really enjoyed being up close to the fans so I wanted to do that in the UK. We are back to the big spectacular in November when we play the Hammersmith Apollo. Are you looking forward to Sonisphere festival? Very much so; Sonisphere is a great festival and I’ve had some amazing times there in the past, both on stage and in the crowd. The line-ups are good, the organisation is good, the fans are very supportive of all the bands that play, from early afternoon to the headliners, so it’s a very positive experience. Who will you be checking out on the Sonisphere line up? Prodigy, obviously, as they’re always phenomenal to watch live, but pretty much everyone I can get to see while I’m there. As I said before I don’t listen to music much when I’m at home so festivals are one of the ways I find out what’s going on. It’s also a good place to meet up with old friends though, and as I live in Los Angeles now I don’t get to see my British friends as much as I’d like. And finally, if you hadn’t become an international musician, what career do you think you would have ended up with? Well, my two big interests outside of music have always been aeroplanes and racing cars. So, my intentions as a 16 year old were, should the band idea not work out, to get involved in both of those activities. I wanted to do something that was exciting, involved travelling, had lots of variety and was constantly challenging. It was more those requirements that I wanted for my life, so I just had to find something that gave me those things. Being in a band is perfect but a pilot or racing driver would have been a very acceptable alternative. WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

rock regeneration The warmer month of May heralded the arrival of our 1st outdoor Festivals of the season... The first of these was Quay To Folk on w w w. ro c k- re g e n e rat i o n . co. u k Christchurch Quay. With the sun high in the sky revellers were treated to local artists like the very talented guitarist Christ Woodford, long with local legend who recently appeared on BBC TV show The Voice, Si Genaro and the brilliant Mother Ukers who really take festival entertainment to the next level. The next was Vdub at the Pub at the Wimborne Football club Kadia where a huge line up of local acts were put on to entertain music fans for just £5 a day. The fantastic Our gigs of the Month Eleven XI provided an excellent theme track to the 1st June The 24’7’s - Thomas Trip, Christchurch summer with songs from their debut album ’Look 5th June Robbie McIntosh- Mr Kyps, Poole 6th-8th June- Gunstone Gathering- Wimborne Football Club At The Time’ and the hotly tipped Saturday Sun performed an outstanding set to a huge crowd of 7th June - Lady Winwood’s Maggot- Mr Kyps, Poole 7th June- The Bamboo Vipers- Legion, Swanage excited fans. There were also great performances 13th-15th June- Wimborne Folk Festival (Various Venues) by comedy pianist Matt Black with his son Chris 24th June- Drew Allen- Bournemouth Rock Cafe Payn and a fine energetic set by The Cramatics. The Ocean View Hotel is the setting for regular gigs by the Bournemouth Folk Club where in May I had the pleasure of seeing a very memorable set by Dorset Music Award winners Fearne who were supported by a great new band called Kadia. Kadia are a 3 piece band fronted by vocalist and Cello player Lee Cuff who delivers some delightful infectious melodies combined with acoustic guitars and ukulele. If you would have told this old rocker 10 years ago I would be sitting in a Folk enjoying this sort of music I would say you were mad, but thankfully my mind is now more open to new styles of music and my ears have been now more well educated. Mr Kyps played host to The Worry Dolls who used some great new technology to live stream their gig into peoples homes, giving an additional audience the chance to see the live gig for a small fee. A great idea if you cannot make the gig but nothing makes up for actually being there in person. On the night The Worry Dolls invited a choir “Bourne Harmony” to join them on stage for an exciting collaboration.

If you could collaborate with anyone, living or dead, who would it be? I used to have a strange obsession with Elvis when I was little. Pop-tarts, pop-corn, Popeye or popping candy? Definitely popcorn! The cinema experience is not complete without it. I love having girly sleep overs with my friends as well and I definitely get the popcorn out if we watch a good rom com. What’s on your iPod RIGHT NOW? Kelis’ new album Food! She was in the same rehearsal studio as me the other day as i walked in playing her album. That was pretty surreal! I’m a massive Kelis fan and her new album is really lovely. What’s your favourite snack? Nuts! I love them, I eat them every day! Pecans are my favourite at the moment. When was the last time you cried, and what was the reason? I was chopping an onion making a curry yesterday. Does that count? You’re playing lots of festivals this summer, do you have a favourite? I love Glastonbury, that was my first ever festival experience when I was 18. The quality of music was incredible and I discovered lots of new bands there too. What’s your standard festival outfit? I love a good playsuit, they’re so easy to fling on, and a pair of Hunterwells because they’re so comfortable, they won’t hurt your feet walking around in them for 3 days, mine have lasted years. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to? I remember seeing ‘The Beat’ which is a ska band from the 2tone era at Brixton Jamm when I was about 18 and i just remember every single person in the room dancing, even the bar people, even my friends who didn’t dance were dancing. It was infectious and I didn’t even know their music, I just went along with a friend who wanted to see them. Kittens or puppies? Puppies I have to say. I have cats and a dog and my dog is a lot more friendly. You’re faced with a choice: never kiss anyone ever again OR be allowed to kiss whoever you want but first you have to snog a tearful Ian Beale (Eastenders). What do you do? I’d have to go for Ian, he’s not that bad is he? Snow covered mountain top or warm sandy beach? The beach all day every day. What three things will you definitely be taking with you on tour? A travel pillow! (You never know when you’ll need to catch up on sleep), an iPod dock (I’m one of those people who have music playing in a room at all times) and some fluffy slipper socks (gotta be cosy on the tour bus). What’s your favourite song to dance to? ‘The Cure and the Cause’ by Fish Go Deep (Dennis Ferrer Remix). What’s your musical guilty pleasure? Abba. My mum is an Abba fan so they were always playing in the house so they make me think of good old times when I hear them and i can’t help but like them now.

What’s been the highlight of Sansara so far? Sam: Everything has been great so far, but currently we are recording our next EP with Romesh Dodangoda and it’s sounding amazing! Hailing from the buzzing rock scene in Bournemouth, Sansara have made a remarkable stamp in the memories of fans across the UK over the last year. This four piece alternative rock band, mostly in their early twenties, have risen to their highly deserved acclaim through relentless gigging and countless late night sessions in the studio, accompanied by well received national performances, from London to Glasgow and almost everywhere in between. The band is fronted by lead vocalist Tom Sawyer, who delivers heartfelt vocals with every show, evidently fuelled by the passion the entire band work hard to portray. With over a decade of performances under his belt, Sam Hughes comfortably fills the role of lead guitarist, pleasing listeners from all musical backgrounds with displays of skill and integrity. A key player in both the originality and development of the song writing process. Dee Aldwell works seamlessly with Mike Rigler on bass and drums respectively, to deliver a punch to the chest of an enthused crowd. Together they create the Sansara sound that fans have become accustomed to. With shows now appearing regularly across the country, Sansara are becoming increasingly popular among fans of all genres so we decided we should go see what all the fuss is about and caught up with the lads to find out more….
What do you think are the biggest challenges facing new bands trying to break into the industry today? Sam: Financially it can be very difficult. The decisions we make to invest in the band whether that be towards tours, merchandise, recording, promotion etc. have to be viable and in order to keep the band functioning we need to make that money back. Despite what a lot of people say with a bit of ingenuity it can be done even for an independent band! Which venue/festival would you most like to play? Sam: For me it would have to be Sonisphere festival. What would you be doing if you weren’t doing Sansara? Dee: I think we would all be massively involved in music, a passion like that cannot be suppressed. Describe your sound to us in five words… Mike: Energetic Dee: Groundbreaking Tom: Elevating Sam: Real & powerful Why should people check out your live show? Dee: Because it will improve their lives 10 fold!
Where does the name Sansara come from? Tom: Basically sansara derives from sanscript meaning the eternal cycle from life to death. This band is a journey to each member and we wanted a name to represent that, so that’s where it came from. Which bands have had the biggest influence on your music? Mike: The great thing about the four of us is that our influences are different in some way from pop punk to metal and everything in between so there’s a great mix when it comes to the some writing process. Most people say that we sound similar to Nickelback and Alter Bridge.
