How did you guys meet? Dainton: Accident and emergency, Pritch had fallen off his skateboard in the shower and broke his bottom... Pritchard: I went to a gay club for the first time and there he was eyeing me up and down and winking at me. From there on I never looked back and we’ve been lovers ever since. How do you come up with the ideas for your stunts?

It’s been over a decade since Dirty Sanchez first hit our screens with a very British take on home video, daredevil madness, as one publication at the time pointed out, ‘it makes Jackass look like The Teletubbies’. But even before the Sanchez there was Pritchard vs Dainton, what started as a daredevil fuelled skate-boarding romp evolved into the carnage you are about to witness sqeezed into Finns Bar in Weymouth. Be afraid, be very afraid... you come up with, hahaha!

Dainton: Most of the time it’s just bad luck, like being in the wrong place at the right time, we turn that around into something to laugh at then, and hopefully, the cameras are rolling. Pritchard: We don’t really come up with the ideas, they normally just happen. If we do come up with a stunt then the person whose idea it is has to see it out. So be careful what

Has there been anything suggested that you’ve drawn the line at? Dainton: Umm I’ve had the fear a few times. When we did the last Dirty Sanchez series in Japan I thought I’d been set up to lose my ass virginity on a live game show, luckily it was only a bondage scene and some sort of traditional jap scat, not my cup of tea mind, but, it made a lot of people laugh and mum proud. Pritchard: Sticking my willy up Dainton’s ring piece is a definite no no, hahaha! What’s your biggest fear? Dainton: Biggest fear, loads, I suffer with obsessive compulsive disorder and hypercondria so I’m constantly living out my biggest fears inside my What’s the most annoying habit Dainton has? head with all the intrusive thoughts, putting Being late, no excuse for it. Although he’s getting better… myself through stupid situations helps keep If Dainton had to describe you in 3 words, which words would he choose? these at bay, a little. Idiot, gullible, sexy Pritchard: Spiders, electricity and How would you describe Dainton in 3 words? Mentally disturbed, OCD, sexy claustrophobia. If Dainton was really grumpy one day, how would you get him to crack a smile? Tickle his balls If you had to enter a TV quiz/challenge show, which one would it be? Wipeout, as I reckon I could win it easily Tell us one thing about Dainton you think we should know… He once took magic mushrooms in my parents’ house when we were younger and proceeded to do skateboard tricks in my mother’s best china room. I really wanted to stop him but I was tripping my balls off to so I sat in my bedroom studying my mate’s moving face. If you were Dainton’s career advisor, what would you have suggested he do for a living? Be a vicar

DORSET MUSIC | FEBRUARY 2014

Do you ever have days where you think ‘you know what, I just don’t feel like beating myself up today?’ Pritchard: Yeah quite often really. I’m massively into keeping fit so i do lots of swimming, cycling and running and that really puts me in a good place. Dainton: I don’t know man, I think

PRITCHARD VS DAINTON

there’s a lot more laughter to our brand of humour than just beating ourselves half to death but, we all need a little shake up from time to time to feel life and know our place in this tiny rock… How do you get over that and get on with the show? Dainton: To be honest I’m more nervous about walking out on stage than going ape shit so the part where you take the hits sits right at the back of your head until the hammer comes down… I also like laughing a lot, so I’ll go to lengths to put a smile on my face, and also the fans... it’s all about having a solid laugh... What’s the best perk that’s come from doing what you do? Dainton: The best perk hands down is travelling the world, it’s taught me a ton about life. Mind you it might have gone back out the other ear now... if you don’t go see what this planet has to offer you’re ripping yourself off, period… save up, beg, sell your bottom, do what you have to do to travel the world, I’m not talking a tourist hot spot either, go away get lost, travel to the unknown... eat that up all day... Pritchard: Yeah, definitely. Travelling. I love visiting new places and seeing new cultures and through Sanchez and skateboarding I’ve got to travel the world. I’m a big fan of the sun so getting to go to hot climates around the world is a treat

Witness the carnage at Finns, Weymouth on Feb 15

What’s playing on your iPod right now? Dainton: All sorts, I’m listening to Mike Patton right now, the original score from “the place beyond the pines”, I’ve got stuff from Death Grips to Celtic Frost, Odd Future, Trash Talk, Slayer, Die Antwoord, John Murphy, Ol Dirty Bastard, Wu Tang, Strauss, Pink Floyd….. Pritchard: From my 2 day party I had on the weekend I mainly played Queen as I’m a massive Freddie Mercury fan. Motorhead, Slayer, etc.

ZAN LAWTHER

What’s the most annoying habit Pritchard has? Shitting with the door open, dropping his rubbish all over the inside of my car!! If Pritchard had to describe you in 3 words, which words would he choose? The Noodle King How would you describe Pritchard in 3 words? MR 50 50 If Pritchard was really grumpy one day, how would you get him to crack a smile? Remind him he’s not in the Guinness Book of Records. If you had to enter a TV quiz/challenge show, which one would it be? Um? Probably some dodgy Japanese game show Tell us one thing about Pritchard you think we should know… Pritchard once stuffed 18 Monster Munch crisp packets inside his foreskin, and also 22 £1 pound coins, now that’s a God given talent my friends haha… If you were Pritchard’s career advisor, what would you have suggested he do for a living? I’d have to say a tour guide at the Freddie Mercury experience in Geneva haha...

ROCK REGENERATION

In January there was a buzz around Bournemouth town concerning the release of an album by a much hyped band from Swanage called ‘Saturday Sun’.

w w w. ro c k- re g e n e rat i o n . co. u k Saturday Sun

These guys have made the music scene sit up and listen with a debut album called “Orixé” that features some excellent creative song writing with haunting vocals and smooth melodies. The band opened their tour at the Winchester Pub in Bournemouth and had a little surprise for their fans in the form of two new musicians. Allan Varnfield on drums ( The Longest Day/Wasted Generation) and Toby Fitton on bass ( Neon Abeo/City Of Echoes) added an exciting new dimension to the bands sound with a new heavier feel to it. Supporting Saturday Sun on the night were a new band three piece called “The Plastic Dots” who showed great promise with a great set of original Psych/indie influened Our gigs of the Month songs. They have just put up some of these songs on 1st February- Dave McPherson (Inme) + Tom their soundcloud page here www.soundcloud.com/ Somerfield + Tom Clements - Inferno, Bournemouth theplasticdots. Check them out I reccomend it!! At the end of December, we at Rock Regeneration had our Christmas Shindig featuring some of the best rock bands that Dorset had to offer with Sansara, Saints Of Sin, Walk The Night and Western Sand. The evening was very well attended and all four bands put in some amazing performances concluding in a unified collaboration from all the bands with a Christmas song encore. The evening went so well that we have been asked to make it an annual celebration. Watch this space for more details. February is shaping up very nicely with a whole load of great gigs arcoss the whole of Dorset, we have been busy widening our gig guide to include lots of new venues accross the whole of the Dorset, Hampshire and Wiltshire region. If you would like to add your venue or gig to our gig guide please just let us know using the contact details below. CHINNERS

ROCK REGENERATION

James "Bob" Davies (guitar) What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you guys when touring? We toured Europe with Limp Bizkit a couple of years ago, that was pretty ridiculous in itself, but to top it off a few of us were asked up on stage in Hamburg to play ‘Counterfeit’ with them, that’s probably the most ridiculous thing that’s ever likely to happen to any of us.

FRIDAY 28TH FEBRUA8PRY M BOURNEMOUTH THE WINCHESTER

Which band you’ve toured with have been the biggest riot? Most of the bands we have toured with have been awesome guys. The two Kerrang! tours we’ve done, with All Time Low and New Found Glory, as well as Young Guns, My Passion, While She Sleeps and Letlive they were probably some of the best tours we’ve done. What was your inspiration for your last LP ‘Start the party’? We just wanted to make an upbeat, positive rock album. Everyone knows the world is in a terrible mess, there’s no point mentioning it again. We just want to an entertaining diversion, and if people can come to one of our shows, or put on a record, and forget about all their other worries for an hour and have fun, then we’ve done our job. If could cover any One Direction song what would you pick? I don’t know any One Direction songs by name, but I heard one in club once and it was quite good, so that one. Who has the worst tour bus habits? Someone in the band keeps murdering prostitutes and leaving their corpses in the back lounge. That’s annoying.

ers.indd 11

03/12/2013 11:29

Who out of the band is the biggest nerd? We’re all pretty nerdy, probably the least cool band there’s ever been, but probably me or Gav are the most ‘geeky.’ We both love video games, Gav can ‘do computers’ and he wears glasses. So he wins. What’s the best tour food? Anything that’s cheap, filling and won’t give you the shits. Not prawns!!!! Who was the cutest baby out of the band? I haven’t snuck into any of the other boys’ houses and dug through their baby photos so I can’t say for sure. At least two of the band were never actually babies at all, and were born as adults. See if you can guess which ones. If you could have one superpower what would it be? The power to have any superpower I thought was applicable for any given situation. Either that, or the power of thought. Would you rather have a mouse sized penguin, or a penguin sized mouse? A tiger with caterpillar tracks, like a tank. and a jetpack .

If you could be a cookie what kind of cookie would you be? A revolting one, so I’d never get eaten and could continue with my life. Dog shit and pus. What’s your favourite pizza topping? Pepperoni is always a solid bet. Or £80,000,000 in cash, non-sequential, unmarked bills. What is the meaning of life? This is where I smugly write 42 and leave it at that. The meaning of life is not to get lost or killed. Tell us why we should catch your set at The Old Firestation? If you haven’t bought a ticket you should because we have a collection of high quality rock songs of varying tempos and keys and we jump about a bit. FEATURE The formidable driving force behind I AM I is singer ZP Theart. A founding member of the renowned UK metal act Dragonforce, he made four studio albums and a live record with the band and toured the world for a decade, eventually performing to audiences of up to 85,000 people. His time with the group also saw him nominated for a Grammy in 2009. After his departure from Dragonforce in 2010, ZP worked tirelessly to put together his own group and after carefully handpicking a set of expert musicians, the result was one of the most exciting new rock bands of 2012, I AM I. A promotional single entitled ‘Silent Genocide’ in the summer was followed by the release of a debut album, ‘Event Horizon’ in September 2012. Written and produced by ZP and Polish born guitarist Jacob Ziemba and mixed and mastered by Roland Grapow (Helloween/Masterplan), its stunning blend of melody filled metal and riff based rock topped off by ZP’s soaring vocal performances completed a package that was acclaimed worldwide by critics and audiences alike. Released shortly after their first festival performance at Bloodstock Open Air, I AM I supported the album with a set of UK dates. Tours with Ugly Kid Joe and Skid Row ensued, while the band also performed electric and acoustic sets at both Hard Rock Hell 2012 and Download 2013. Generating positive reactions wherever they have played, the band are an absolute must see live, while ZP performs honestly and effortlessly, epitomising everything a real rock front man should be. As they now embark on a spring tour, fans have an opportunity to witness the line-up of I AM I, which has recently seen the former Power Quest duo of guitarist Andy Midgley and drummer Rich Smith join band mainstays ZP, guitarist Jacob Ziemba and bassist Neil Salmon to complete a formidable quintet. We met up with ZP to dig a little deeper…….

You had 11 huge years with Dragonforce, what’s it like starting from the beginning again with I AM I? When Dragonforce started to get noticed it was the best and most exhilarating time for me personally. Everything was fresh and new and a total rush. Unfortunately that dies off after a while and you seriously miss it, but with I AM I it’s the same all over again and the feeling is fantastic! Have the Dragonforce fans remained loyal and supportive towards you? Most definitely and for that I am eternally grateful. The only thing is that there are fans globally and for a young band it’s not financially easy to get to them all as soon as we want, but we’re working on it! It seems as though you were able to hand pick the best musicians to join you in I AM I, did you know each other before and how are you bonding as a unit? When I started to conjure up this band I knew who it was I was looking for but I didn’t know them yet. All my musician friends are in high profile bands and they all had very busy schedules so I knew I had to look at putting a fresh group of guys together. We inevitably had a few line-up changes as most new bands do, but we have finally settled in and the unity is great! All the boys are exceptional musicians, but

above all, they’re nice guys, and I felt it time to surround myself with such individuals. What’s the best thing about being on tour? For me it’s definitely the ‘another morning another city’ thing. I love travelling and this is unequivocally the best job for it. Also the fact that you’re out there as a group of friends doing what you love most, meeting fans and tearing it up onstage every night. And the worst? Doing interviews... HA! :) No seriously, the fact that no-one’s yet broken through with a proper theory of traveling through the time space continuum! I love to travel, but travelling can get up your arse at times! What’s on the cards for I AM I in 2014? We are currently working on a new album but we will still be very busy on the live front as well. What can we expect from your live show? A live band first and foremost! We all put a 100% into our show and that will be what fans will see and experience. I AM I is a live band not to be missed... or misjudged.

ONES TO WATCH

SATURDAY SUN In 2010 Saturday Sun began as an open-ended acoustic jam session between two like-minded music fans, Alex Hedley vocals & guitar and Bill Merrick – guitar. As the duo’s sound grew into something more sonically encompassing, the band likewise expanded into the present plugged-in line-up of today. Taking their name from the Nick Drake song, Saturday Sun this 4-piece from Swanage make music echoing in parts Drake’s 60’s acoustic sound, but with an added fusion of folk, rock and blues recalling maverick John Martyn, with a touch of psychedelia and a style akin to early Pink Floyd. The mixture of influences creates a sound built on gentle but intricate acoustic guitar work, but one that sonically grows into something bigger, with lush expansive melodies. Vocalist Alex Hedley’s range veers from falsetto to an earthy, almost growling baritone, giving even their most gentle tracks an emotional weight. In 2012 Saturday Sun released their debut Seagull EP. A low-key release put out on their own label ‘Viva La Fleetwood’ the nickname given to Merrick’s home-caravan, situated on the grounds of a derelict Swanage school in which they spent their first two years rehearsing and recording. The EP’s title track of “gentle acoustics and lush melodies” - Q, was awarded a Q ‘Track of the Day’, with iTunes making the entire EP one of their homepage Recommended Releases. The limited run of EPs sold out in a matter of weeks. 2013 saw Saturday Sun tour extensively, playing The Eden Project twice, once as support to Sigur Ros, The Larmer Tree Festival, Beautiful Days and Gold Coast Festivals, numerous East London gigs as part of the Independent Artists Movement and most recently as support to Nordic Giants. In-between gigs, Saturday Sun spent 2013 also laying the finishing touches to their debut Orixé (out now). The album was recorded variously in a cave in the cliffs near Swanage, the aforementioned derelict school, a dark dank cellar somewhere in East London, a studio above a shopping precinct near Southampton and in the basement of Producer John Cornfield’s house. Cornfield (Muse, Oasis, The Stone Roses) mastered the entire album, and co-produced parts, with other tracks being recorded with Gareth Matthew and Erik Mikalsen. The band took time out from their recent tour to have a little chat with us….

So, who are you and what do you do in the band? Hey, I’m Bill and I play guitar in the band / chiller / ballistic spice bag If you had to invent a new genre that describes your music, what would you call it? The extended withering of thought before it cascades in on itself, the do you me tree. Or tao post folk if you’re speaking to a flaming gorilla with a waistcoat on down at the water hole or maybe psycho folk if you’re talking to someone who believes so hard in their belief system that they run around trying to put people in cages. Your new album has just landed, what can we expect? Hopefully it’s not staying landed for too long! After spending so long making an album you would have thought I’d have an answer but other than saying an album’s worth of songs that we put a lot into, you’ll just have to listen and see. Where have your biggest influences come from? I once knew a man called Rotli Wonder and he taught me pretty much everything from blowing up bouncy castles to removing teeth with wire cutters. I once saw him breathe a puff of smoke onto a hedgehog’s back and the hedgehog was suspended midair in a state of extreme ecstasy. I pretty much owe it all to Rotli, that brave psycho king. The music industry is getting more and more difficult for up and coming bands. Are there any particularly important lessons you’ve learned so far? The music industry is the after wake institution that whitewashes / rides itself out from the initial push. So if you want the music industry to take note of something you have to take them off their whitewash and give them a new wave. That’s my weird logic to it anyway. Which band would you most like to tour with and why? Maybe Radiohead, maybe Brian Jonestown Massacre, maybe a reformed Oceansize. If I could trade off the tour for a festival I’d go for that and put all my favourite bands who have mapped the most musical space time. Do you have any other hidden talents, other than your musical skills? I can swim to the bottom of a black hole and swim back out, Rotli taught me that one. What’s been your biggest achievement as a band so far? I guess from an outside perspective it would be that we have financed and recorded a whole album ourselves but I’d have to say that the jams and generally sharing some space turf together for this much time has to be the coolest thing. Who has the worst habits in the band and what are they? I can’t really think of any which probably means that I have loads! We normally try and avoid stuff that we know will annoy one another. And finally….why should we come check out your show? Imagine you’re a Pepperami that’s caught in a storm, walking down the broken sidewalk, getting pushed over, generally having a bad time. Then a huge hairdryer falls from the sky and starts blowing relentlessly at the Pepperami till it’s giggling itself silly and its meat has gone all soft and warm. Yeah, don’t really know where I’m going with this…. I guess, basically, come to a gig if you want to go to a gig and hear some great live music. ZAN LAWTHER
