Pulled Apart By Horses originally hail from Leeds, now based in London they’ve spent the last 6 years strengthening their fan base and playing explosive live shows across the UK and Europe. Right now they’re finishing up the recording of their 3rd studio album and getting ready for some UK dates at the end of April/May. We thought we’d collar drummer Lee Vincent for the low down on how the album’s coming along and when we can expect to get our filthy mitts on it.

What was the inspiration for the band name? It was our guitarist’s idea really, and the name was there before we even had a song written or been in a room together. It was just meant to be, and fitted the music perfectly. Even after 5 years we still like it. How’s the album writing been going, and when are we getting new Pulled Apart By Horses?

as I am playing music - I started a career in music journalism when the band was taking off. Yeah, I think I’d be a writer, writing something for the screen, fiction maybe, maybe even a novel. Do you guys ever use working titles for new material, and if so what are some of the best ones? Working titles are a dangerous game....if you use one for long enough it becomes like a person, like a child you get used to and grow fond of, and they run the risk of sticking. We tend to stick to first ideas as well, they were a bit more ‘out there’ on the first album. An example of this is that we have a friend who used to be in a band called Grammatics - Rory is his name. He’s a strange man. ‘I’ve got guestlist to Rory O’Hara’s suicide’ is the title of a track on our first album. It was a joke, sick tour humour, and it stuck.

It’s going very well. We took quite a long time to write this time around which we never had the opportunity to do before. It’s our strongest set of songs so far. We’ve been recording with friends in Leeds - in a cool Leeds studio, with people we know, have worked with before and feel comfortable with. I could second guess a release date, but then inevitably it would not come out then so we have no solid release date as yet, hopefully at some point in the summer, but people will be hearing a new song sooner than they think. What do you imagine you’d be doing if you weren’t in a band? I don’t really know, I’ve done lots of menial jobs though which has made me realise I definitely don’t want to have a boss. I’m as keen on writing

Any stand out PABH shows come to mind?

all just itching to get back out on the road.

It’s really hard to pin it down to just one. I generally love smallish rooms, where it’s packed and everyone’s losing their mind. When we were touring ‘Tough Love’ we played a show in Manchester Academy 3, and it was raining sweat. Was hot and mad. I’d rather play in a sweaty basement but massive gigs are fun as well. Translating the energy and atmosphere of a small basement to a large stage is fun.

What are you hoping to get out of 2014?

Do you ever get song envy, or think ‘I wish I’d written that!’?

We’re just aiming to make the best album we can and hope that people like it. It’s really that simple at the moment. There’s a sense with any first album that people know that you’re here to stay. We’ve set ourselves down as a UK band that’s not going anywhere else. We’re hoping the new album allows us to keep touring and playing to more and more people. We all really respect bands like Biffy Clyro and Muse, bands who’ve been around a while, building their profile up and forming a loyal fanbase gradually, rather than exploding out of nowhere very quickly. They can now afford to do whatever they want and we’d like to be able to do that.

Hmm maybe. There are definitely songs I can look at and think ‘fuck you guys, it’s so good!’ ‘Obstacle 1’ by Interpol was the first one that made me think that. That song from start to finish is perfection. To be fair I’m more in awe than wishing I’d written it. I love seeing when a band gets it right, that’s total inspiration. Looking forward to getting back out on the road? We’re used to touring a lot and we played like 2 shows last year. We took a step back on purpose to write. When you tour for a long time you become like this dysfunctional family and it can drive you nuts. Now we’re

Your tour bus breaks down on a dark and lonely road in the middle of nowhere at midnight you have no phone signal no wifi what do you do? Hahahaa you’ve got two options the way I see it, sleep or explore. I’m going to go for the latter and see what’s about, you never know what you’d find. Who has the most annoying habit on tour? Nobody really has any to be honest? The worst thing is probably the smell! After a couple of days of hot sweaty shows 9 dudes start smelling ripe. What’s your favourite cinema snack? I’m an ice blast man! I loooove the slush puppies. If you were stranded on a mountain top and one of you had to get eaten, who would be the tastiest? It’s obviously going to be me, I’ve got the most meat on me. If you couldn’t be in Bury Tomorrow anymore, which band would you want to be in? Slipknot. They are the greatest band in the world who wouldn’t want to be in them. What would your super power be? Invisibility! There is so much you can do with that, hahaha!

Goth pop-rockers

Emotion fuelled and energetic, Fearless Vampire Killers have struck a chord with many an angsty teenager over the past few years. One of the hardest working bands on the circuit at the moment, when you throw goth-rock contemporaries (and mates) Dead and Ashestoangels onto this bill you are guaranteed a night of not only great music and great fun but a whole lotta eyeliner! Expect old skool favourites and a smattering of new material from Yorkshire ska punkers Random Hand as they hit the road again this month. Typically associated with the punk scene due to their ethics and lyrical content, the main themes represented within the songs are usually of a social and/or political nature, which reflects the environment in which they were written. With a sound that merges the plaintitiveness of post-hardcore with the punishing heaviness of metalcore, BT attack listeners from all sides with their emotionally charged metallic assault. Despite the name, Memphis May Fire are not from Tennessee, but rather Dallas, Texas, where everything is bigger and bolder. Unsurprisingly, the band’s musical output is extremely difficult to classify, having siphoned from the very best of its various post-hardcore / southern rock influencers to create something wholly unique; the result of which presents an unparalleled blend of elegance and aggression that can only be defined as, well, Memphis May Fire! Nothing more, nothing less. No trends. No excess. Simply a group of individuals that stand in defiance of all things mundane. Having many of their UK shows already sold out, the band has developed an almost disciple-like dedication that continues to spread across the globe. The success of their first full album The Hollow in 2011 caused their popularity to spread like wild fire throughout metalcore fans. “I think that fans really connected with The Hollow because it dealt with personified life experiences and outside perspectives on a variety of relatable topics” spoke guitarist Kellen McGregor regarding the album’s universal appeal and why it was so well received. MMF followed The Hollow, a critical success far from the emptiness its title implies, with 2012’s Challenger. The album showcased the depth and breadth of their songwriting prowess and cemented their cohesion as a unit. A now well-oiled machine, MMF have proven themselves light years ahead of a scene in dire need of reinvention and we think new album Unconditional might do just that. We caught up with Cory Elder just as the band are about to travel over to Blighty to grab a quick insight into just how excited they are to be coming back to the UK. New album ‘Unconditional’ has literally just reached our ears for the first time – what’s the response been like so far? The response has been mind-blowing to us! I see people buzzing about it online that have already really delved deep into the lyrics and latched on tight.

young, big or small are going nuts and screaming it out. We love it. A lot of your dates are sold out already – how does that make you guys feel? Beyond honoured, amped to meet as many folks as possible to chat with and slap high fives around.

How has your writing/recording process changed over the years? This go around we tracked all the guitar and bass at my home studio and all the production was finished when Jake and Matty went to Arizona to do drums and vocals.

Who’s been your favourite band to tour with? We’ve always loved touring with Fact, The Word Alive, & We Came As Romans but have attained tons of friends in every band we’ve been out with.

Are you excited to be coming back to the UK? Excited isn’t anywhere near the proper word. We have played some thrillers over there and are always tickled pink to get back.

What did you do before Memphis May Fire? Loads of things! Worked at Journeys, a furniture store, a lumberyard, a plant nursery, toured regionally with my old band, and was a student in college.

Do you find there’s a difference in the audiences here compared with the US or Australia? Besides accents, nah. The fans coming to shows old or

With a brand new album out in April and a whole string of upcoming UK dates on the imminent horizon, as well as a coveted slot at Takedown Festival on the 15th March, we cought up with LostAlone front man Steve Battelle to grill him about the album and recording and to ask what it’s like to tour with The Darkness. What can we expect from new album ‘Shapes of Screams’?

What was it like on tour with The Darkness?

I would say that if you’ve heard our previous album this one is a big leap in terms of vocals. I would compare it to a musical, with many layers of vocals, it’s definitely something you can imagine being played out on a large screen. If people like musicals they’ll probably like it when they hear it, especially the opening track.

Oh it was a great tour! It was loooonng 6 weeks, but such a good time. The people who are the most successful are those who are down to earth. I haven’t got a single bad thing to say about those guys, they’re lovely!

Where did the title come from? I really love writing lyrics, it’s more of a visual representation of what I’ve been writing about - time and the lack of it. I’m not sure if you ever heard about what [David] Bowie used to do..? He used to cut up bits of newspaper, spread it all out on a table rearranging the pieces, and random words would spark ideas. I did just that, and got inspiration for the new album. Then I realised the initials are S.O.S, a cry for help - it all gelled as the theme for the album. I mean it wasn’t quite as simple as that, but if you ever need some inspiration it’s amazing to do this and see things you might not have seen before. Where did you record this time? We recorded the album in four different ‘studios’. The idea behind this is similar to how bands from the 70’s that we like used to record...in places that aren’t actually studios, like a manor house for example. Part of this was spending 3 weeks living and recording with Dan Weller [from Sikth] in a secluded place that used to make beer. You’ve decided to release a vinyl edition too. We think vinyl is having a massive comeback at the moment. Why do you think vinyl is relevant today? I’m right in front of my own record player right now. Even though we all have iPods and use iTunes we’re all big fans of vinyl. I think the need to have something physical is coming back, and vinyl is just so cool. It’s timeless really and the recordings always sound amazing. We’d argued with our label about putting something out on vinyl, and then they asked us ‘can you release it on vinyl?’ and we were like YES! For us to have an album out on vinyl is big for us.

DEVON MUSIC | APRIL 2014

Just how much are you looking forward to festival season? Very much so, when you’re in a band it’s something you aspire to be doing. Being part of a festival lineup is a special feeling. What better way is there to spend your summer than playing with your band in front of a lot of people at a lot of different festivals around the world? What’s your favourite space to play – arena? Small venue? Festival? We’ve played Wembley Arena 3 times now, as a support band, and it was incredible, but turning up to a venue in Helsinki and playing to 500 kids all singing along to your words was just as amazing. I’d say playing in an arena to your own crowd would be the best experience. If you could cover another band’s song what would it be and why? We covered a Marina and the Diamonds song, ‘Numb’ off her first album. When we recorded our last album in LA I listened to the whole album all the way on the flight over, and became a little bit obsessed with it, especially ‘Numb’. We recorded it and just put it up on our Youtube channel. We’ve also covered Meatloaf and Metallica too. What’s on the agenda for LA in 2014? Very simply, releasing the record on April 7th and then tour. It’s going to be a very busy year for us, and for me, I hope that at the end of the year we’re already thinking about the next album. I don’t understand the years waiting to make new albums, I’ve constantly got ideas and new songs in my head and just want to get them out.

ONES TO WATCH

What bands do you like to listen to? Mainly bands in the hard rock area, especially 80’s hard rock, Skid Row, Guns ‘n’ Roses etc. We’ve all got all sorts of individual influences as well, for me personally it’s the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Adam is a big AC/DC fan, Rob is a big fan of Heaven’s Basement and for Skinns it’s more Rise Against which he likes to mix with an old school punk vibe. What bands would you most like to support/go on tour with? We’d love to go on tour with Airbourne. That’s one seriously rocking band! I think our music would go down very well with their fanbase. They’re not particularly a band that we try to emulate but we’ve got massive respect for their music. And of course, the after parties on that tour would be carnage! What’s your favourite festival? Download, definitely! Me and Rob last went in 2011, we had such a blast, met so many cool people and saw some amazing bands. I only wish we could remember more...

Formed at the beginning of 2010, Badland Bandits are an original Hard Rock band currently based in Plymouth. The band was formed through a passion for music and a mission to bring rock music back to the forefront of peoples’ minds and music tastes. After completing two successful European tours covering Germany, Hungary, Italy, Bosnia, Czech Republic and Holland the band set their sights on California playing 13 shows over 17 days early this year. They have now returned to the UK and are working on big plans for the future. We caught up with them just after opening for The Answer last month to find out just what makes these rockers rock as hard as they do!

Who are you and what do you do in the band? My name is Dave Crane and I play guitar How did the band meet? Well me and Rob (Bassist) met in school when we were about 14. We were both musicians in different bands. We were always talking about doing a project together. We used to jam together a lot and wrote a few tunes, totally different to Badland Bandits at the time. When we were about 18 we moved into a flat in Plymouth where we jammed a lot more and partied like there was no tomorrow. Rob knew Adam (Singer) back from primary school and randomly met up with him by chance in a pub around the same time. We all knew Skinns (Drummer} through mutual friends so he fitted in right away. What made you first decide to start playing music together? To be honest with you it was initially just for fun. There wasn’t a lot of music in our local scene that we were into at the time so we kind of just thought to ourselves “look we don’t like any of this stuff coming out at the minute, why don’t we start writing music that we enjoy playing and listening to”. I guess our logic was that if we were feeling this way, then surely there were others feeling it too.

DEVON MUSIC | APRIL 2014

What’s been the biggest achievement for Badland Bandits so far? I’d probably say our biggest achievement so far would be the tour of California that we have just come back from. We played 13 dates over 17 days all up and down the west coast. One of the highlights was playing the world famous Whiskey a-go-go, it had always been a lifelong dream of the band to play there, so finally seeing our name on the “Live Tonight:” sign outside and then being on that stage infront of the crowd was pretty surreal. What’s on the agenda for you guys in 2014? Our main plan of attack this year is to get more stuff recorded for you guys to hear! We have just completed a brand new EP and are currently in the process of filming two videos for a couple of the tracks from it! We’re really excited to put this EP out as we feel that this is kind of the first true representation of who we are as a band and of our own individual sound. How would you describe your music to someone who had never heard you before? Balls-to-the-wall Rock’n’Roll!! Why should we come check out your live show? If you come to see us live you are guaranteed three things; a sore neck, a hangover and a new favourite live act! We are the type of band who don’t do anything in half measures, especially not when it comes to live performance, so if you’re the kind of person who likes to see guitar solos on bars, singers doing stage dives and all the other things that used to make rock music so much fun, then we are the band for you!
