It may not feel like it yet but summer and the glory that is festival season is just around the corner. And there’s no one able to bring a little sunshine into our lives in quite the same way as King Charles. The gangly yet wildly debonair singer-songwriter’s sound has been described as everything from psychedelic rock to folk-pop. We’d call it ‘great’. It’s a rousing and uplifting mix of twinkling guitars laced with lilting melodies and lyrics as kooky as the man himself. His live shows are a slightly crazed affair, energetic and charming…..much like the man himself. Born and raised in London, Charles fell in love with country music, took up the guitar, and was writing his own music by the age of 17. Following a year at Durham University, Charles returned to London in 2007 without a degree but with the new moniker ‘King Charles’. And that was that. After two years of touring his phenomenal album LOVEBLOOD, King Charles ended the 2014 festival tour season and went straight into recording his next as-yet-untitled sophomore album with what he calls a “return to his roots”, blending the sound that fans have come to love over the years with the inspirations from the world on and off the road. And a ‘return to his roots’ is particularly apt given that he recently made a drastic change to his image, chopping off his legendary bum-length dreadlocks and reappearing with a glorious mop of chin length curls. We couldn’t resist the opportunity to have a chat with Charles ahead of his Exeter Phoenix show this month so we called him up to ask him all the important questions… OK, I can’t start asking you proper questions until we’ve talked about your hair. Hahaha, that’s the most proper question of them all! What made you decide to cut your dreadlocks off? I think I needed a change. I wanted to let a few things go and push my life in a new direction. I was getting a little tired of it, I have to say. I wanted a new hairstyle and I was getting very jealous of other people’s hairstyles and I was like ‘dammit, I don’t want to be bound to this for the rest of my life’ so I thought it was a good time to go. It was an exciting time in my life and I just wanted a new start. And are you happy with your new bonce? Yeah I love it! It’s so amazing. Being able to run your hand through your hair is a luxury I’d never dreamed of! It’s so light now and it stays in the same place so I wanna experiment with a whole bunch of different haircuts and then grow it back again. Eventually. You’ve literally just finished in the studio with recording the new album, how is it shaping up? Amazing. It’s been a pretty amazing process, I’ve loved it so much. It’s been a long time coming and now to be at this stage with things being mixed and mastered it’s fantastic. I’m really excited about being able to get it to everyone. Marcus Mumford is producing it isn’t he? How’s it going working alongside him? It’s been great. He’s done a lot, he’s played a lot of drums, he’s done some

singing, he’s had a good direction for the sound. It’s been a nice weight off my shoulders. I’ve just kind of kicked back and written the songs and sung them and played guitar and let him do the rest. It’s been great. They’ve got a little folk, almost commune going these days (we were at Glastonbury and caught your show as part of their secret Gentlemen of the Road takeover of the Avalon Café), how did you get involved with Team Mumford? I toured with them before, I toured America with them and they sang on my last record on ‘Brightest Lights’, so I’ve known them for a while. So I had a conversation with Marcus, telling him what I wanted to do next and he said he really wanted to be involved so we ended up making an agreement that he would produce it which is great because he has a good idea of my sound and the way it’s changed over the years so he had a specific idea of what he wanted to get from the album. Has your sound changed again? Are going to hear something slightly different? Yeah, it is different. It’s kind of back to the way I started. When you start writing songs it’s a very truthful undertaking and what comes out first is purely indicative of what’s trying to get out of you before the world takes its toll and there’s a lot of songs that I’d never managed to record. For example, the first song I ever wrote is going on this album and a couple of other early songs along with it because that’s a style that I wanted to go back to. That’s what first inspired me and set me alight to become an artist. You’re about to go off on tour, doing 28 shows in 28 days – that’s pretty intensive, how are you going to look after yourself on tour? How will you maintain your voice? I’m not, I’m just going to let it roll. I’m having a dry January so I can have a monster of February and I’m not going to do anything to look after my voice but usually it’s quite robust so hopefully it’ll survive. It’s a pretty tall order playing that many shows in a row, not many artists would do that. What inspired you to do this? Well a couple of years we did 31 shows in a row in March so this year we chose February cos it’s a slightly lighter load haha. But taking days off before, I’ve just never seen the point. It’s like well, what are we going to do today? Are we just going to sit in the pub and chat? So I was like let’s just stay on the road. Who will you have with you out on the road? I am bringing two bands out with me. Gallery Circus and Sasha Siem who’s a very exciting musician. You’re also known for your eccentric and flamboyant style, do you enjoy being creative with your appearance as well as your music? Do you think they go hand in hand? Well I’m just the same person expressing myself in different ways so it kind of all just comes out in a similar style I think, whether that’s music or clothes or sketches it’s all along the same lines. I don’t think it’s something that stays static throughout a lifetime. It’s always going to change and move around so I look forward to different phases and reinventions. You’ll see me with a short back and sides one of these days! And in a suit and tie? Well…..maybe not a tie. Unless it’s in southern Italy and it’s really blue skies, hot weather, sunglasses and suit and ties look really gangster, so I might go for that. I can just picture you strutting down the street in your suit and tie, with your newly shaved head, being totally gangster… Haha I’d look so gangster with no hair at all. That’s terrifying! What can we expect from the live show this time round? I think there might be some surprises. It’s going to be a very exciting new blend of songs and instruments and it’s the first time that we will have played any of these songs anywhere so it’s like road-testing the album cos the album’s not going to be out while we’re on the road so it’s going to be all new stuff. Do you know when the album’s coming out yet? How long do we have to wait? I think Spring / early summer. Perfect! Just in time for festival season!

UNSUNG HEROES

Here at Devon Music HQ we see examples every day of people who work tirelessly in the background to bring live music to an audience and we thought it was about time we turned the focus to those organisers, promoters, DJs, musicians and even venues that have persevered year on year to keep Devon’s rich live music scene alive. This month we turn our attention to Plymouth’s answer to Michael Eavis (if Michael Eavis had tattoos!), ROCKFEST founder and organiser Cuz Cussens… Now in its 13th year ROCKFEST started as an afternoon of bands in the garden of the Junction to raise money for charity. Since then it’s grown into a 2 day affair which last year raised a whopping £10,000 for St Luke’s Hospice. This year’s festival is set to be the biggest yet as bands from all walks of music take over Plymouth’s Voodoo Lounge for a whole weekend of punk, ska, rock, indie, blues, psychobilly, metal - you name it, ROCKFEST will bring it to you, and what’s more, they’ll only charge you a tenner for it! “I’m just a tattoed truck driver. I do this purely as a 13 year hobby cos I love my music! And it’s a cracking event; everything for everyone” says Cuz. And since they’ve raised £42,000 in the past 6 festivals, all the while entertaining hoards of music fans, long may ROCKFEST reign. We’ll see you down the front! ROCKFEST takes place Easter weekend 4/5 April 2015 at Voodoo Lounge, Plymouth www.facebook.com/events/1419970934935044

ones to watch

Combining the raw edge of hard rock, the energy of punk, and catchy pop melodies, Glasstide are here to breathe new life into the music scene….apparently. Fresh faced, young blooded, and ready to take the world by storm; Glasstide are set to be Exeter’s hottest new export, so they tell us. And we have to say, when we caught them opening for The Dirty Youth at the back end of 2014, we’d be inclined to agree. So new to the scene they’ve barely had time to release any material yet their live shows are becoming something of a phenomenon and we simply couldn’t wait to see what they had lined up for this over the coming months. We talk to the band to find out just when we can expect to see a little more…

Who are you and what do you do in the band? I’m Tris, and I play guitar in Glasstide

What’s coming up in 2015? Our first show of the year is with Emp!re at the Cavern, and we’ve just got the first cut of our debut video back. The band launched itself last year, and we spent the early part of 2014 preparing ourselves. The material, sound, general feel of the band, and every aspect was paid attention to, so it could be the best we could possibly make it. We recorded at the legendary Rockfield studios, and are raring to get those track out! 2015 is going to see us launch debut singles, videos, as well as a few killer shows and festival appearances we’re involved with. If you could go on tour with any other band, who would it be? Wow, so many… Fall Out Boy have just announced an amazing tour, that would be awesome to play! There are some killer bands doing the circuit at the moment too, such as Pierce the Veil, Lower Than Atlantis, and Royal Blood. AC/ DC’s new world tour could be good. I think we’d take that if the phone rang.

What made you decide to form a band? This group formed off the back of various breakups of previous bands. After getting a lineup together, we decided we wanted to do something upbeat and positive - Do you have any other talents apart from music? something that was a bit of fun!
