Proving themselves a powerful force for good in not only musical spheres, Enter Shikaris fourth studio album The Mindsweep pushed them even further into the realms of success when it was released at the very beginning of this year. Combining punishing breakdowns that sear through their dubinfused rock with lyrics that poetically discuss their political views, the band are no strangers to causing a bit of a ruckus. And thats precisely why we love them. After a killer 2015 with hater-crushing sets at some of the worlds biggest festivals, the band hit the road in February to play some of the biggest venues of their career and theyre coming to the BIC. We caught up with frontman Rou Reynolds to learn a little bit more before we go rock our socks off

So Hospitalised is out now, how has the reaction been so far? Its been really good so far. We didnt really know what to expect. I think theres a small portion of overlap between drum n bass/Hospital fans and our fans, which I guess is where I myself fall. Y’know I listen to our music but Ive been a drum n bass fan for years. Has there been a different reaction from the drum n bass/Hospital Records fans than from your own fans? Not really. One thing is that everyone seems to have their own favourite track and its very dispersed throughout the album. Its a very diverse album, as is the original Mindsweep album so I guess that really comes across which is quite cool. You guys have always crossed the genre boundaries, being just as at home at Download as at Glastonbury. Is it something you’re particularly conscious of or is it more a case of just being focused on producing the best music you can, regardless of its classification? Its always been pretty subconscious really. We were lucky enough to grow up around all sorts of different music scenes. Y’know whether that was ska punk or hardcore, as well as living just on the outskirts of London we had the pleasure of watching dubstep grow from its very early days. And Rory’s brother was a drum n bass DJ when I was 15 and we were always huddled round the decks getting an education on drum n bass. And then having parents who were into motown and soul so for me, I enjoyed all these types of music and I guess it all just naturally comes out in what we make. Your live shows are always something of a spectacle. How do you go about designing them and can we expect anything special for this next run of shows? Its our biggest headline tour ever so its quite scary but now we’ve got a few months off tour because Rory is having a baby, so basically weve got a lot of time to get stuck into the production and planning and we’ve already got a layout of how we want everything. We’ve currently in the budgeting stage which is incredibly boring and often frustrating because you want to put everything into it. But weve never really eart our first show at the Astoria we didnt make a penny because we literally spent it all on lasers haha. You guys have been playing together for over ten years now, with no line up changes at all. That’s fairly unusual these days. What do you think it is that keeps you all getting along? Without venturing too far into cringey romanticising everything, friendship is a really big deal. Yknow weve known each other forever, we went to the same primary school and stuff like that which really helps. Another thing that definitely works for us is were all fairly laid back as individuals so when someone is having an off day, we dont get too heated. I think thats a big part of it, having a relaxed attitude to things. Catch them live 22 February @ The BIC | Words: Zan Lawther
