Winter is now in full swing and Dorset’s music scene is still buzzing with a plethora of artists, promoters and venues getting 2017 off to a running start. This month we speak with the winner of the Skirmish Battle of the Bands Jack Grace, about his experiences in the competition, his future and what he is doing with his prizes, as well as catching up with the awesome Stevie Parker ahead of her Sixty Million Postcards show.

So Jack, youve had a few days to let it sink in. What are your thoughts now on being crowned Skirmish Presents battle of the bands 2016? I still can believe it if I’m

honest, seeing the calibre and level of the acts throughout the competition. Obviously I’m very happy at the result, and I like to thank both Skirmish for the opportunity to take part in the competition, and secondly to my followers/fans for supporting me throughout this competition.

You have won four hours in the studio courtesy of Absolute Music, plus you get to choose either £750 to spend on a music video with Bootprint Productions, or anywhere in store at Absolute Music, or £500 in cash. What will you choose?

Back in the first heat, you were beaten by Sirpico and went through as a wildcard. What did you think were your chances of winning at that point? Sirpico are a great

You started out with a guitar, a mic and a loop pedal. Your current band lineup seems like the start of something really magical. How do you feel about the journey so far, the rest of the band, and what are your aspirations for the future? Starting out as a solo artist is hard when you are alone touring and recording. It can be a bit lonely. I don’t feel like a ‘solo artist’ anymore, and I love the feeling that I’m doing what I love with my closest of friends. Much like entering in the Skirmish Battle of the bands, it was great to work as a team to put together a set that ultimately won us the event.

Its great as we’re all still playing around with ideas of direction and things feel fun and new, but at the same time everything came together so quickly and effortlessly in the beginning that I feel I’ve been playing with

the guys for years. As mentioned we’re doing an EP in February, working in a studio is where I probably feel most at home, so I’m looking forward to sharing that with the band. We’ve hired a cottage in Devon for 7 days with Joe Reeves who’s done all my previous recordings.

How does the dynamic of being in a band differ from going out as a solo artist?

For me, it’s everything. Back when I started my music career in 2011, I envisioned my music to develop in to a full band line up and I’m so pleased that it’s exactly what I have now. I can put the guitar down and let the boys carry the music and have every confidence in doing so, I can sit back and just watch

band, and in that situation there isn’t anything we can do differently to compete with them. I had to keep confidence in what our band had prepared as a setlist for the final. We worked very hard on the set and had to cut out a lot of our favoured songs because of the way we wanted our set to flow for the final.

it all happen in front of me. It’s great! Writing has become a more organic process now. I’ll come up with a vocal melody or a set of chord progressions on the piano and we just jam the ideas. It will either start to take form or we’ll jam for so long it will be so far removed form the original idea that it’s a new song in itself. This is the first time I’ve ever collaborated writing ‘Jack Grace’ songs. Christian (guitarist) and I will set up all the guitars and amp and just jam for hours. This gives us a great platform for coming up with new ideas for songs and interludes between songs that we play for live sets.

when it comes to writing, it is important that you are honest with yourself. Why are you writing? If you know that, then the rest is easy. For me, writing is an outlet for all the negative things I have to deal with; such as people I’ve lost and relationships I’ve seen fade away. It’s a form of selfreflection, whether it works its way into song form or is kept as spoken word. It’s a process that I think is key to emotional

what advice would you give to yourself if you could go back to when you were first starting to write and gig? I

would tell myself to not worry about trying to please everyone and to stay true to myself and not follow trends.

Smirkish was a great contest and attracted such a high calibre of acts. What was your experience of the competition? If I’m honest,

I’ve never been a fan of how battle of the bands have been run. I find them to promise one thing and deliver another. You’re often competing against your peers and friends, which is a hard thing to deal with on a personal level. However, with Skirmish I have found this to have not been the case. Everyone was kind, friendly, on time and professional, so I can only credit them on how the competition was run. All of us bands were in it together, and it was great to share the stages with friends I have made throughout my musical career, such as Soulhole and Wickerman. The event enabled me to see some incredible live music, and I also found it as a great platform for networking within the industry.

We heard that one of your friends calls you ‘The Feels’

development and (although it sounds corny), if I didn’t write I believe that I would be a very sad person as I have no way of venting my struggles.

Using these life experiences to create the content of my work can be quite emotionally taxing at times, and perhaps the reason people cry is because all of these emotions are reflected in to how I perform.

You’ve been a fixture of the local scene for a number of years now, who are your favourite local acts, & why?

That’s such a hard question, but I’ll break it down into two bands, past and present. My favourite past band would have to be the Saturday Sun, with the combinations of Alex’s voice and Billy’s guitars, the music was just entrancing. I’ll always remember seeing them down in cellar bar playing new material for an album that sadly was never released. I was just in awe, the craftmenship and level of attention to detail was astonishing. Now my favourite

3 highlights of your musical career so far? My first highlight

would be doing session work for pop band ‘Fanfair’ and playing with them to support Lamar at the O2 Academy London. Another highlight for me was playing a Cellar bar gig last year, that turned out to be one of the best gigs of my life. I don’t know what it was, but there was something really special about that night. I was told that I’m an inspiration to the next line of local talent, which was such an amazing thing to hear. Lastly, performing for BBC introducing was a major highlight... they played my new single on their NYE show for ‘Ones to Watch 2017’.

Whats the next stop on this amazing journey of yours?

Once we get this EP done, we will be going with the flow with a few gigs and festivals lined up. I can’t wait to start performing outside again! There’s nothing quite like singing with the sun on your face. And, of course, the Mr Kyps show supporting Fearne February 25 th .

How would you describe your music and genre? Always find this difficult - but - I would say its a sort of fusion between a darker, more ambient and unusual style, and classic good old pop - but hopefully slightly more soulful and emotional Who has influenced you and how has that impacted your creation of music? Many things have - my life experiences, the artists I was brought up with (lots of Motown, soul and singer songwriters like Eva Cassidy and Elvis Costello)...more recently bands like London Grammar, The Japanese House Massive Attack... and generally that pulsing and textured electronic sound that is really prevalent and everywhere at the moment, but is amazing How long have you been touring for and what have been your highs and lows on the road? I havent ever gone on a tour but

have some shows coming up, I’m supporting C Duncan this month and have some dates in February. I do have extensive gigging experience having said that. It can be exhausting to get so nervous all the time, so I think thats always tiring. But I guess after being drained by nerves youre subsequently pumped full of adrenaline the moment you get on stage, so it kind of levels out If you could choose to collaborate with any living artist on a cover of one of their tracks, who and what song would you choose? Currently I would choose the XX. The sparsity of their production would be really amazing to sing on, and I feel like they really dwell on their lyrics which is something I can relate to. The song I’ d choose would probably be “Sunset” Your music conveys a lot of emotion, how much of your real life experiences do you put into your songs? Its all pretty autobiographical stuff. Im quite a private person in reality, despite the practice of broadcasting all of my woes in audio form worldwide - but I think writing songs has always helped me express the stuff that I cant talk to anyone else about

We read you are based in Bristol. We find many creatives spread across the 3B’s, Bournemouth, Brighton and Bristol. Bristol in particular is well known for its strong music scene, with many hopeful musicians flocking to the city. What do you think it is about the city that creates this enviroment? Its really hard to say, but Bristol just has a vibe about it I think. It probably helps that there are music colleges etc that draw people in, but theres definitely a reason students choose to stay here long after. I think it must have something to do with legacy, loads of great bands come from Bristol, creativity breeds creativity perhaps? You recently released The Blue E.P how did you find the recording process and what else should we be keeping an eye out for in the future? Recording is pretty great, I had the joy of working with great people on the E.P and the whole process was so satisfying. I have an album out before summer and a couple more singles, Im showing a slightly different side to me with the next one

(Breakbeat drum roll)… DJ Hybrid ! to talk about his own record labels, music production and advice for up and coming artists. What music did you grow up listening to and does it influence the music that you produce now?

Was there any specific DJ or artist that inspired you to get into music? And if so, what was it about them that influenced you?

I’d say, like many people, Andy C was a big influence when I started out and it was seeing him live at Creamfields for the first time in 2005 which really made me want to start mixing DB more. It was mainly how fast paced and energetic it was that really made an impact on me, I’d always liked all forms of dance music but it was that night that made me 100% want to be a DB DJ myself.

Where do you start with an icon like Don Letts? The DJ, film director, musician and videographer has long been central to the UK punk and reggae scene, most notably working with The Clash throughout the 70s and 80s. His fabled dub and reggae DJ sets during the birth of the punk movement is credited with bringing the sounds of the Caribbean to the London scene, influencing The Clash and other major punk bands. Letts went on to manage influential punk and postpunk band The Slits, before forming Steel Leg v The Electric Dread with Keith Levene, Jah Wobble and Steel Leg. In 1984, Letts joined forces with Mick Jones of The Clash to form Big Audio Dynamite. During all of this, Letts somehow found the time to direct music videos for Musical Youth, The Psychedelic Furs, The Pretenders and Elvis Costello, as well as the feature documentaries The Punk Rock Movie and The Clash: Westway to the World. Now Don Letts, The Rebel Dread, presents Culture Clash Radio on BBC Radio 6 Music, in addition to playing his inimitable sound clash selection to hand-picked venues across the world.
