2017 is upon us. Who ever would have thought that humanity would be upon the edge of the future and yet still, no hoverboards and no flying cars. One thing is for certain however, as we march relentlessly into the future, the primal beating of a drum accompanied by inspired musicians still forms the centre of many of our lives.

INDEPENDENT VENUE WEEK IS GOING FOURTH…
FOR ITS BIGGEST YEAR YET.
A host of new venues have signed up to hold gigs between 23 and 29 January 2017, taking the total of venues currently confirmed to take part in Year 4 of IVW to over 130 – and there’s more to come. Among the places that have signed up are The Anvil, 60 Million Postcards, The Old Firestation and Sound Circus. Each of these venue are bringing something different to the table from rockers Skinny Girl Diet at The Old Fire Station to Pirate-Enthused-Folk Outfit The Bonsai Pirates at The Anvil.
Founded in 2014 with Colin Independent Venue Week is a 7 day celebration of small music venues around the UK and a nod to the people that own, run and Greenwood of Radiohead as work in them, week in, week out. Three down to Mars girls from North London, these young women are fearlessly taking on societies problems one political lyric at a time. Skinny Girl Diet, forcing all to face the repulsive reality with this ingenius name that’s a social commentary on the slim fast culture the worlds been dragged into. Standing for all those that feel oppressed from feminism to black rights, their music oozes honesty and feeling. Inspired by the heavily male dominated grunge scene, the 70s punk and the 90s riot girl movement, their music is completely their own, something new. This group of raw, serious, teenage, DIY musicians will not be ignored. They will not go away and you can be sure they don’t give a damn about you, me or anyone’s opinion for that matter. They are like the punk power puff girls defeating all obstacles in their way. They certainly put skeptics, critics and sexists in their place and defy labels of how people view females in music. he king Iggy Pop recently said “Here are some people who just want to reach out and grab your ears” when he played them three times on his Iggy Pop Confidential guest BBC Radio 6 music shows and everyone from XFM’s Jon Kennedy, BBC Radio 6’s Steve Lamaq, BBC Radio 1’s Rob Da Bank and Amazing Radio have put them on the airwaves loud and clear. - Live @ The Old Fire Station 27th January 2017

Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles is the superb new musical endeavor of Billy Bibby, former and founding lead guitarist of Catfish and the Bottlemen Catfish and the Bottlemen relentlessly gigged their way across the UK, and occasionally abroad, building a fiercely loyal fan base, selling out increasingly larger venues, and ultimately securing a recording deal in 2013 that would lead to the release of a Top 10 Certified Gold debut album in the UK, and Billy Bibby and his band are ready to do it all again. Billy Bibby’s current musical journey began in the summer of 2014 in the same, grass roots, DIY style that served him well in the past. Penning new tunes and trialling them in front of live audiences, as well as via demos posted to SoundCloud, garnered overwhelmingly positive feedback. Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles are out to win over new fans one by one with their energetic, tuneful, and optimistic rock. It’s been non-stop for the band since their first live show in November 2015 and it’s bound to be an excellent show in Bournemouth as part of Independent Venue Week 2017. Support comes from local 80’s influenced Psych-Rockers Chimpshed A.D and folk trio Willowen.
28th January - The Anvil The Wytches are a U.K. three-piece whose buzzy, doomstruck rock has made them the talk of the British rock cognoscenti. They’ve been spreading their subversive message across England in the dark guise of 50s surf riffs, desert whips, melancholic shuffles and a kaleidoscopic stage performance that will put you under. The Wytches occupy their own universe and their new album All Your Happy Life is the new soundtrack, a road trip of a record with an Altamont-esque end times outlook and anxiety forever floating around the peripherals. Based in Brighton, their trip along the coast has been long in coming. They last played in Dorset over four years ago at 60 Million Postcards, so it’s only right that the band come back to this venue bringing with them the nihilistic, sludgey, fuzzy, original and downright dirty sound which is fast propelling them to true mega stardom.

by Harry D-Tox Wrec Records is a record label focused on Drum & Bass music. Working with a talented group of producers based on and around the south coast of England. D-Tox caught up with Stylus & Rizzle from Wrec Records ahead of their event to celebrate 5 years of the label, at The Winchester in Bournemouth. Firstly, thanks for taking the time out to do the interview. 2016 has been a busy year for you guys. I guess question number one would be, how did Wrec Records start and what is the ethos behind it? Hi, thanks for having us! 2016 has been a good year for all of us so thanks to everyone who has supported us so far. Essentially, we threw some house parties in 2012 and came up with the idea of creating a label to promote the local producers as we felt the scene was full of really quality unrecognised talent. Ok, so who does the crew consist of? The crew consists of Stylus, SKG, Rizzle, Host, Ma:Saru, Riley & Pangea. We’re all local to Bournemouth/Poole, however, Host has moved up to Bristol for uni recently. What was the first release for the label and how many releases have you had so far? The first release was a single from Rizzle Bangta Rights, Aura and Tell Me. Weve also had a killer release from Host Movements and an EP from Rizzle entitled Locked in Sound, which came out last December You also have a YouTube channel with videos of your previous events as well as a live DJ performance section (WrecTV). What DJs have you featured and are there any plans to continue that part of the channel? Weve featured quite a number of artists over 10 episodes of Wrec TV now and were looking to start this up again in the New Year. Weve had Rizzle, Ma:Saru, B1 Noz, SKG Ca:ro, D-Tox, Konaxx Niche, Benzo, Tasca, Host Habitat. For anyone that hasn’t been to one of your events, you put a lot of effort in to the production and overall look of the event, transforming the venue. Whose vision was this and how do you make it happen?
Weve always strongly believed that production in your night needs to be top notch, we may not have the same space to do our events as some others, but we definitely try to transform the venue as much as we can. Usually this will include things like our projection mapped Wreckage signs, smoke/co2 cannons, a quality laser lighting show and of course a world class soundystem - VOID! We find that all this really makes the difference. What sound systems have you used for your events to date and are there any you would like to work with in the future? Weve worked with Phaze 2 soundsytem before and also Riggamortiz, both really heavy custom soundsystems that definitely had the venue rocking. We now use VOID as their rigs are insanely good for the space we use and we also like to promote local businesses. What can people look forward to at the Wrec Records 5th birthday party? For one they can look forward to Spectrasoul, if you dont know them already they are a couple of badman! They’ve just started their own label-ish Chat and we have them coming down to headline. Weve also got Pola Bryson coming down, who have cemented themselves firmly in the game recently with their Soulvent imprint. Were also going further in than we ever have done on the production, so look
forward to bigger Co2 cannons and maybe even a bit of confetti cake - it is our birthday after all! Are you planning on moving to bigger venues and other towns or cities? We would love to take our Wreckage show on tour, weve always talked about throwing events in Brighton Bristol, where the scene is really great, but not made any moves on this front yet, maybe in a couple of years when we have raised ours our artists profiles a bit more we will look into this. Its certainly not out of the question at all! What plans have you got for 2017? First up weve got a single from Habitat, which has already been receiving great support, you can stream one of the tracks on the skankandbass YouTube channel at the moment, we’hre yet to reveal the other track so keep and ear out for that everyone. We’re also going to be continuing our events and we plan to be taking our birthday tour all around the country for the whole year so if you would like us at your event/ festival - get in touch! www.facebook.com/wrecrecords www.soundcloud.com/wrecrecords www.youtube.com/wrecrecords Twitter/Instagram: @wrecrecords

A few years after Busted ended, members Matt and James formed McBusted with the McFly guys while Charlie took a heavier direction with his band Fightstar. Their new sound, although stylistically unrecognisable and far darker around the edges, should prove to be an interesting live experience for both new and old fans. BOURNEMOUTH
