Dorset Music July 2017 July sees another jam packed summer month for the Dorset music scene, although festival season is in full swing the venues of Dorset are also stepping up their game, with some amazing events coming up across the county. This month we chat to organiser Alasdair Keddie about the Greenpeace Summer Jam at chaplins and interview Anvil Rock Bar’s general manager/in house promoter Ryan ‘Bear’ Mills about the bar, the scene and his history of putting on gigs. On top of that we take an in depth look at some summer highlights of local promoters We Broke Free, a closer look at The Poole Harbour Festival and The Julia’s House Family Fun Day at The Bell in Pokesdown, as well as the usual column from from Chinners of Rock Regeneration, the Drum’n’Bass round up from D-Tox and all the previews and listings you need to plan your summer.

The Greenpeace Summer Jam is an all day fundraising event at the stunning Chaplins and Cellar Bar, featuring a Plastics of the Caribbean theme to match the organisation’s current campaign against plastic pollution in the oceans, a load of the areas best musicians performing live as well as a fire display, African drums, an ‘epic’ raffle, amazing cakes, kids activities and face painting. In the garden throughout the day there will be some acoustic performances from Kimari Raven, Jack Grace, Aaron Jamie, Jemma Davies, Jonny Newton Jagger Phillips and Burg and the Back Porch Band with a set from Mischa and his Merry Men and more TBA in the evening. We sat down with organiser Alasdair Keddie to find out more. Give us the lowdown, what is the Greenpeace summer jam? The Summer Jam is Bournemouth & Poole Greenpeace’s annual fundraiser. We held our first one 6 years ago to celebrate Greenpeace’s 40th birthday. The support we had was amazing so we decided to make it an annual event. Since those humble beginnings we are now the longest running

Chaplins is one of the most visually impressive bars in Bournemouth but I’m sure there are other reasons you picked this prestigious venue to host this event? Chaplin’s have been incredibly supportive to us as a group from the very beginning. They offered us a free space for our monthly meetings, without which we couldn’t have got started locally. We are now one of the largest Greenpeace volunteer groups outside of London with a number of our members having received Non Violent Direct Action training which lets them participate in the large scale Greenpeace actions. Chaplin’s is also a real creative hub; every warrior poet, philosopher, artist or musician walks through their door at some point. It’s a great place to engage people in what we do and a great place for finding creative support. I understand you were also the local Green Party parliamentary candidate, how has the fallout been from the election and how important are fundraisers such as this one to the cause? I volunteer for both Greenpeace and the Green Party. It can be a fine line sometimes as Greenpeace is an apolitical campaign organisation and cannot be seen to favour one part over another. As a Green parliamentary candidate I knew this election was going

We have a minimum team of 12 volunteers on the day ensuring everything goes smoothly, clearly visible in Greenpeace t-shirts. They will do shifts from setting up and dressing the venue at 11 am until close. It’s hard work but we all get to let our hair down by the end. Having an event like this really gets our volunteers working together and we always feel stronger as a group afterwards. I think we have one of the best charity raffles in the business and it adds a good chunk to the proceeds. We have prizes ranging from slack lines, surf lessons and restaurant meals to a 36 pint box of Alasdair Keddie in action cider up for grabs. We also have our queen of cakes, Sara Lee no less, organising an epic cake table of delicious vegan and gluten free treats. We are the only party other than the Tory’s that has any track record of being elected to council in the last 7 years and we need to build on that.

Party in Pokesdown! THE BELL - 29th JULY
Everyone loves a good cause, right? Right. And what could be better than raising money for a good cause and having heaps of fun at the same time? Martine Phillips Hannen looks into the feel good event of the summer! On Saturday 29th July, a fundraiser for Julia’s House is taking place - and it’s shaping up to be a big one! After the rip-roaring success of last years event, the organisers have decided to hold another Family Fun Day at the same venue, The Bell in Pokesdown. The pub boasts a large sun-trap of a beer garden and allows children until 8pm. Getting to the Bell is easy, as it is situated opposite Pokesdown train station and is right by a bus stop with routes covering from Mudeford to Bearwood to Ringwood (and everywhere in between) Firstly, let me tell you the reason for this Summer Holiday bonanza and why this is due to be an annual event. Having a child with a life-limiting illness can happen to anyone – and when it does, it is absolutely devastating. Imagine being told there is no cure and no-one knows how long your child will live, only that they will need constant round-the-clock care. Julia’s House is the only children’s hospice situated in Dorset and Wiltshire dedicated to providing life-changing support to help families from diagnosis through to the end of a child’s life. They provide practical and emotional support for families caring for a child with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, providing frequent and regular support in their own homes, in the community or at the hospice. Because Julia’s House rely on fundraising and donations for 95 per cent of the vital income they need to support our families, they simply would not exist without your support. As this cause is close to the hearts of many, the organisers of this Fun Day have gone to town with the planning - to bring you everything you could possibly need to keep the whole family
entertained. With stuff for the kids and adults alike and free entry to boot, this 11am - 8pm party is the place to be on the last saturday of July. The day features a full day of live music from an eclectic bunch of acoustic talents including Phil J King, Kimari Raven, Alexz Allen, Jemma Davies and a headline slot by this year’s Bournemouth Unplugged winner Lee Rasdall-Dove. For the adults, the party continues inside with some hefty classic rock covers from local band Beyond Redemption from 9pm. One of the highlights this year is the auction - especially for anyone who likes their football. The item in question is a Cherries football shirt, signed by the current team. You can bid on the night in person or via the Facebook event page (Just search ‘Julia’s Housed Family Fun Day 2017) This years raffle is already looking great, with prizes including vouchers for tattoos and mini facials, as well as hair treatments, gardening services, gifts and lots more. Last year’s photo booth proved to be hugely popular, so this year the wonderful Pink Giraffe will be making an appearance - watch out… this booth has attitude. There will be an array of stalls selling a variety of things including baby and toddler accessories, second hand children’s clothing, jewellery, handmade gifts, glassware and more. To ensure nobody goes hungry, this year the organisers have arranged for an increased selection of food including a BBQ and a fish n’ chip van from Chuckles, as well as a cake and sweet sale, and Karla’s Kones who will be selling delicious Lovington’s ice cream. Not forgetting the little ones, there will be a bouncy castle (also free of charge), beautifull hair braiding with Hana for those who fancy a temporary new ‘do for the holidays and an arts and crafts stand. Here the kids can create and keep a choice of simple fun items …. and also give you a breather to enjoy one of the many drinks on offer at the bar. With plenty more to be confirmed, you can rest assured there’ll be something for everyone at this Fun Day. Bournemouth based promoters We Broke Free have been massively stepping up their game as of late, and when they aren't found DJing the many venues of Bournemouth and beyond they are busy scouting some of the hottest up and coming bands around. We take a look at some of what's in store this summer RYAN BUTTERWORTH - 6TH JULY - 60MPC Bournemouth’s own Ryan Butterworth has most recently been seen competing in BBC One's leading talent show ‘Let It Shine’. Ryan made it into the quarterfinals of the live shows and performed with the Kaiser Chiefs. This special event marks his first Bournemouth live show and the launch of his new EP 'After Rain Look For Rainbows'. Citing inspirations to his bleak folktronica such as Radiohead, Oasis and The 1975 his sound has seen the 21-year-old earn high praise from the likes of BBC One, BBC South and Forrest FM.
THE DEATH OF POP - 27TH JULY - THE ANVIL We Broke Free will be stepping into local rock bar The Anvil to put on one of the UK’s most exciting indie bands and pioneers of ‘jangle-gaze’, the mostly London based The Death Of Pop. For those wondering what exactly Jangle-gaze is, the band say it’s “the jangly guitar sound of Johnny Marr and the Smiths mixed with a noisy shoe-gaze thing of the late 80’s / early 90’s”. Having seen these guys live a few times all I can say is The Death of Pop are super tight and super catchy with some really interesting guitar work to really set them apart from the pack.
SUNSHINE FRISBEE LASBERBEAM / YR POETRY / POWDERED COWS - 3RD AUG - 60MPC Born in 2011 in Birmingham S.F.L have been churning out their unique fusion of psych punk energy and alt pop hooks with manic frequency, having an impressive recorded output of over 75 songs already. Their 4th album is currently in the works being recorded by Dan Sprig, whose production credits to date include bands as diverse as Cradle of Filth, UB40 and Bring Me The Horizon. In their words they play “Aggro chill-out/Jizz pop” but generally they are just outright loud with a huge range of influences from Fugazi and Shellac to Modest Mouse and Sun Kil Moon. Tour mates YR Poetry are another really interesting band, who describe their newest release as a “a pop punk musical” and features Alexei and Junior from Brum legends Johnny Foreigner. SLØTFACE & HONEYMOONS & TOWERS - 28TH SEPT - 60MPC Formed in 2012 in a small town on Norway's west coast, Slotface started out as a pop-punk rock band before gradually adapting their punk sound to include more of the bouncy pop sound that defines them. Seemingly taking a lot of influence from the badass riot grrrl movement and its inherent feminism in recent years, the band are currently recording their upcoming album with Dan Austin of Pixies and Maximo Park fame. Support comes from Dream Pop band Honeymoons and Death Of An Artist alumni Towers.
DREAM WIFE & LEECHES - 24TH OCT - FIRESTATION Named after the 1953 romantic comedy starring Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, The pop punk trio were formed within the walls of art university in Brighton, originally as a “fake girl band” as part of art project for a gallery exhibition. Dream wife soon became so much more than an art project and after leaving uni they embarked on some high profile tours with Sleigh Bells, The Kills and their recent US triumphant stateside debut on tour at SXSW which earned them praise from NPR, DIY, Stereogum, Nylon and Entertainment Weekly etc, truly cementing their place as one of the best new live bands around. Armed with razor sharp pop tunes and a take no prisoners punk attitude they’re are known to elicit pure chaos at their raucous live shows. Drum&bass | jungle | bassline by Harry D-Tox This month for the Box Fulla Records Sub:Section we talk to Fabian Lodder, the promoter of Bournemouth based event, Dreemy Daze, about past, present and future movements. Ok so let’s get straight to it, when was the event founded and what is the music policy and concept behind it? Dreemy Daze was founded in 2015 by me and Tom Dubyes, the original concept was to fuse drum and bass with heavy bass and funky house. After the first event we decided it was best to have just drum and bass as Tom runs multiple heavy bass and funky house events already. A year later Tom decided that it was for the best that I continue Dreemy Daze on my own due to him having a lot of work on his plate, it was then that I decided to cater for the full spectrum of drum and bass with every other event having bassline, garage, Grime and Hip Hop. There is always an impressive visual display put on by Roberto and Sian from 3Dimensional Media. Do you work with anyone else when you do the events and have you got resident artists you work with? Agreed Roberto and Sian put so much time and effort into the visuals as well as the after movies and photography for the night. They always deliver 110% and for that reason I have stayed loyal to them and let them take care of that side of things. I have multiple residents such as DJ Hannigan, MC Hustle, MC MDB, Pangea, Sneaky Pete and DJ Snap, Who always bring nothing but pure fire to every set. I’m always on the hunt for fresh up and coming talent! Can you tell us about the headliners you’ve booked in the past? Originally the idea was to have no headliners and have just up and coming artists, but due to success of the event I decided to start investing into some of the more renowned well known Djs. I’ve had the pleasure of working with SAXXON (Natty Dub Recordings/ RAWDIO), VIYNL RICHIE & SONIK PRESHA (Druid Records), SHIMON (Ram Records/Audioporn), CODA (Switch/Charge Recordings), AL PACK (Soul Deep Recordings) and ED:IT (Dispatch/ Shogun Audio). Every one of them was nothing but humble, down to earth, genuine, approachable people, which is so refreshing to see in the music industry. It was a real pleasure meeting Ed:it at your last event, he was a proper gent, even staying around after his set to check out the rest of the event. It was a good vibe although your last event was also unfortunately the last Jungle/D&B event at Bournemouth’s beloved music and arts venue The Winchester. Now that has closed down, what are your plans for the future? Ed:it has to be one of the realist people I’ve worked with. Not only did he deliver an absolute monster of a set but the fact he stayed for the whole of the event and showed full support was overwhelming. I’m still in upset and shock about the Winchesters

You’ve been at The Anvil since the start, what was the original concept for the bar and how has this changed as the years have gone by? Yea, i’m almost part of the furniture now surely lol Well, originally, the owner Tom wanted the concept of the bar to be more Blues based but with the loss of vital Rock venues like The Gander & Metropole, and Champions on it’s way out, i strongly suggested going down the Rock direction and filling the gap in the market, and luckily enough, he was good enough to get behind it and back the vision. You’ve been a promoter in bournemouth since long before The Anvil, what are the differences between flying solo and being an ‘in house guy’? I love both aspects, being independent is more rewarding in terms of achievement but being in-house is definitely less pressure, especially financially. I really admire the independent promoters that still work hard to put on great shows, because despite what the general punters think, they really aren’t sitting on a mountain of cash and work hard to bring both good bands and gig goers to the venue. I hear a lot of grumblings from promoters about over reliance on using social media to tell people about their gigs and the changes some of the more popular sites have made to their advertising features. What are your thoughts on this and do you think a change is due in the way gigs are advertised online?
Oh man, this has been a topic of conversation since Myspace haha. Things are constantly changing with Social Media, and it’s definitely made it harder for promoters to reach people. Is this something people prefer? I’m not sure. It’s 6 of one, and half a dozen of the other. Sure, people don’t want to be hassled, and myself personally have made a personal list of people i know are regular gig goers, as opposed to inviting everyone to everything, but i do see a lot of people whining they didn't know certain gigs were even happening. Again, one downfall with Social Media is over saturation so a more focused approach like tagging and targeted marketing is definitely worth it in the long run. There’s a new site in the works called Music Planet Live that sounds promising which looks to bring together the music scene and help each other from roots level and upwards, so we’ll see how that goes What do you feel is your greatest achievement as a music promoter, and does this differ from The Anvils? I think, personally, and also as a fan, that getting Threat Signal here was something special. Their show was intense and one of the most active mosh pits ive seen here. They are a metal band that obviously hold strong credibility within the Metal world, and with reason. Under Reprisal (2006) is still one of the best modern metal albums to this day! Anvil wise, having the guys from Thin Lizzy here would certainly be up there in terms of in-house bookings. Otherwise, we owe a lot to promoters such as Dom Patience, Choff and George Fullerton, who

have brought us many a great band from up coming bands like Moose Blood, Beartooth, Mantar, Mothership, Astroid Boys, Junior, to legends such as Chuck Mosely(Faith No More), American Head Charge, The Subways, Stray From The Path and Nick Oliveri (Queens Of The Stone Age). One thing I see The Anvil doing annually is the Bloodstocks Metal To The Masses competition, a slot at Bloodstock festival is the grand prize, but there is a lot more to it than that. Why do you think Metal to the Masses is so important to the UK metal scene? Supporting the underground level bands is almost as important as putting on the big ones. Thats something Bloodstock, and more importantly Simon Hall are doing with Metal 2 The Masses and i fully support that! Yes, the winner of the Metal 2 The Masses event in their area means they get to perform at Bloodstock, but if they do it right, and run with the momentum, it can mean so much more! One great initiative with Bloodstock is their link with other European festivals. Previous Bournemouth winners Metaprism were given the chance to play Wacken after they did really well at Bloodstock, and i’ve seen many a band win the competition and go on to bigger and better things. You obviously come into contact with a lot of bands, who should we be keeping an eye to become the next big thing and why? Post Metal / Sludge band Steak Number Eight from Belgium, without doubt!! They are both some of the nicest but talented chaps i’ve had the pleasure to work with! They literally started the band when they were kids! A few years, beers and beards later, they have just released their 4th album and are due to support MASTODON in June in Europe. They aren’t as big in the UK as they are in Europe and that’s a crying shame! Last year, I actually got the opportunity to see them play a headlining show at an open amphitheater in Antwerp, Belgium in front of 1500 people. It was one of the best shows i’ve ever been to! Such a great set, and location. Do you feel you have had a hand in getting any bands their big break, and which ones? Myself directly, I’m not sure i could take the credit for anyone getting their big break. I do remember a funny time at Bloodstock tho in 2008 concerning The Defiled. They were just breaking into the scene and had a little bit of a buzz, so were doing A LOT of interviews. However, their interviews almost cost them their debut slot at the festival. Like most festivals, they keep to a strict time limit, and if you aren’t there on time, you don’t go on. They came out of their interviews really late, and were all panicking they wouldn’t make the stage time. I think they literally had about 10 minutes to get to their van, get all their equipment out and get to the stage from the carpark. They would of never made it! Lol Luckily, with good contacts and a dash of charm, i was able to blag a AAA pass which meant we could jump in the van and literally drive right up to the back of the stage!! I didn't get them their big break, but i definitely saved their bacon that day and who knows what would have happened had they not played! What are the best ways for a band to go about not getting a gig, and any funny stories you can share? Ha. there’s been some total twonks over the years, that’s for sure! Over the top constant pestering is the worst and gets you nowhere! The best story has to be when we were asked for a gig on the wednesday evening, hassled for an answer thursday and friday, and by friday evening myself and the venue were being slagged off in a facebook

The things being said were pretty bad and completely unwarranted as well so needless to say i was pretty annoyed at the time, but it makes me chuckle to think of the silliness of it now! What would you like to achieve with The Anvil over the next few years? Anvil is strange. In some ways, it never changes and is the same beast it was 5 ½ years ago when we opened. Obviously the moving of the bar was a big change for us, and opened up a lot of space, but i think i’d like to see the same happen for the downstairs venue area. A new stage/lighting setup would be grand, with maybe a new layout to accommodate the great shows we get. Other than that, it’s just adapting and evolving with the times i guess. There’s always a new drink to get behind. Whether that be craft ales, a new tasty spirit or a new tasty shot we randomly create one shift that sticks and becomes a regular favourite. That’s how the Twister shot and Black Death were born, and have both since gone on to become favourites with customers! Ryan ‘Bear’ Mills in action!

THIS MONTH'S OFFERING IS THE POOLE HARBOUR FESTIVAL, HOT OFF THE HEELS OF AN INCREDIBLE DEBUT EVENT LAST YEAR THE BAITER HARBOURSIDE PARK WILL BE HOSTING 30 LIVE ACTS ACROSS THREE STAGES, A LARGE BEER TENT, THE HARBAR VIP AREA WITH COCKTAIL BAR AND LOUNGE, 40 STALLS OF QUALITY STREET FOOD, WORLD CUISINE AND LOCAL ARTISAN PRODUCE AND CRAFT STANDS. SIAN EVANS Sian Evans was the front woman and singer-songwriter of the band Kosheen, with two top 10 albums and top 10 singles including "Hide U" and "All in My Head". Sian also famously teamed up with Dj Fresh writing and featuring on the number 1 smash hit and club anthem 'LOUDER' and more recently penned 'Hot Right Now' for Rita Ora. Sian has teamed up with her long term writing partner Ron McElroy for her new solo project and will be performing a special acoustic full band set featuring all her hits and some new material! THE OUSE VALLEY SINGLES CLUB This Bedford based ‘comedy skiffle’ act have been very busy since their formation in 2009, racking up numerous festival appearances including Boomtown and Bestival, support slots with Chas and Dave, Pete Docherty, and Bob Geldof & The Boomtown Rats as well as finding time to record 3 albums. Sound wise they fuse the traditional 1950s skiffle sound with rock’n’roll and a punk rock energy to create a tuneful sonic assault which goes down well wherever they play. Having been described as “George Formby meets The Clash” in the past, these guys will fit the atmosphere of the Poole Harbour Festival like a glove. REMEDY SOUNDS Portsmouth based acoustic musician who makes special use loop pedals to create his unique sound, which includes beatboxing, rapping, singing and guitar work, he has become a master of the layered songs that loop pedal artists are known for since being announced as the runner up of the Acoustic category of Live and
Unsigned. Hard to pin this guy to one genre as his art crosses over into so many, he has shared a stage with the likes of Chase and Status, Katie B, Tinchy Stryder, Labrinth, Wiley, Chipmunk and Maverick Sabre, Macy Gray, Kaiser Chiefs and many more. THE ROLLING CLONES The Stones are the quintessential rock’n’roll band, and short of selling a body part The Rolling Clones are as close as you can get to seeing the real thing, having been honing their craft all over the world for 17 years, in their own words “distilling the show down to a pure hit of Rock ‘n’ Roll, with a chaser of sequinned Glam”. TANIA ALBONI AMY WINEHOUSE TRIBUTE Sadly we will never get to see the real Amy again but Tania Alboni’s take on the award winning singer classics is truly phenomenal. Not content with only perfecting that unique vocal style and sound that Amy has since become infamous for, she believes that every head tilt, skirt flick and even the hair twirling has to be spot on, making her act so much more than just a tribute. Indie nutters make their return
PLG built up an impressive reputation when they hit the local scene a few years ago, and after a short hiatus they are finally back on the stage where they belong. The band made a name for themselves due to their beautifully crafted hip-hop infused indie anthems, legions of extremely raucous fans and odd football like crowd chants of “goujon” (maybe you had to be there). As of 2017 the band are hoping to pick up where they left off and start getting the national attention they deserve after this hometown show at The Cellar Bar.

Anvil welcomes back the kings of ‘acoustic metal’, Texas’s Whiskeydick. They tour like maniacs and normally make a stop at Bournemouth on their UK leg, having built up a fair following here over the years. Musically they are a mix of gravelly and soulful vocals, interjected with a metal roar, placed over some incredible acoustic work that defies what you should be able to play without an electric guitar.

Yodelling Rock Legends With their unique brand of progressive rock, Focus manifested themselves at the start of the ‘70s as the most successful and appreciated of all the Dutch pop-rock exports. Yellow Brick Festival is a brand new family friendly, youth orientated music and arts festival, taking place at the picturesque riverside of Julian’s Bridge in Wimborne Minster this July, featuring a ‘flea market’ style traders area, an entertainment zone, a ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ eating area and 2 stages with artists over the weekend including Cassia, Little Giants, Leeches, Doors To Manual, Wolf Culture, Lee Rasdoll-Dove, Fullmarx, Surfin Birds, Kevin Mcguire, Ryan Butterworth, Soulhole and loads more.

AUGUST 4TH | CANVAS Supercut remix masters in action ADDICTIVE TV - ORCHESTRA OF SAMPLES In association with the One World Festival, Dorchester welcomes Addictive TV with their project Orchestra of Samples. The group have spent the last five years filming improvised sessions with more than 200 artists playing all manner of instruments in over twenty five countries, from singers in Bhutan to musicians playing bagpipes made from whole goats, via Stereolab singer Laetitia Sadier, and Motörhead’s original drummer Lucas Fox.

Born in London and with her dad as a musician, Dua grew up right from an early age listening to an eclectic mix of great music spanning generations and more, from Tupac to Action Bronson, to Dylan & Bowie and on to Alt J and Chance The Rapper. This early education gave Dua her passion and drive to become an artist herself and she has since immersed herself into her singing, songwriting and performance, having recently charted all over the world and entered the UK top 10 with single ‘Be The One’.

Gigs of the Month www.rock-regeneration.co.uk Deltorers In Bournemouth and the surrounding areas there are hundreds of bands of lots of genres all jostling for our attention and once in a while one band seems to stand out from the rest, a band that can potentially make the next big step. One such band that have been working really hard on impressing their audience is the Deltorers. They are three piece that have played virtually every venue in town along with plenty of festivals and each time you see them live they upped their game just a little higher. The band fronted by Nathan Evans really like to push the boundaries with their punchy hard-hitting grunge inspired, effect laden sound that has to be heard to be believed. Their live shows are full of infectious energy and the band have a real chemistry the sets them aside from the rest. They are not afraid of hard work and really put themselves out there willing to travel hundreds of miles to play a 30 minutes set. They have some really original songs like
“The Powerful Few” and the epic “I Guess We’ll Wait & See” that shows these guys have an excellent creative abilities. A new single is in the pipeline and I promise you it is an absolute corker that with the right airplay could catapult them to bigger things. If you see only one local band this year make sure it is the Deltorers you I promise won’t be disappointed.
