Purbeck Valley Folk Festival is a small festival set on a farm on the beautiful Jurassic Coastline. We take Catherine Burke away from the organisation for a quick chat to talk about this years festival The Purbeck valley folk festival has been running for a few years now, bringing together not only folk and acoustic music but also a poetry slam and arts and crafts. How would you describe the festival to someone who hasn’t been before? It’s a very familyfriendly festival that is enjoyed by people of all ages from little kids to grannies. We are a festival that focuses on great music and performance. We have a very respectful and appreciative audience, so musicians love playing here too and quite often, even the top names come and hang out, sometimes camping for the whole weekend. Purbeck is called a folk festival, but it has a very wide definition of folk music - it covers everything with roots, from folk music from around the world, reggae, blues, Irish, gypsy, and good singer-songwriters. It’s different to most festivals because our stages are in barns, with hay bales and there’s loads of real ale and cider. All of the gigs are intimate and you’re never too far from the music. The location is amazing too with views across Corfe Castle and the Purbeck Hills. What inspired you to set this festival up and how did you go about doing that? We are really into folk music, play folk music and have run the folk club in Bournemouth for years now. I have always gone to festivals and I really wanted to take all the best bits of the festivals that I go to and put them together to make an awesome festival full of great music.

How has it been working together on this festival? What are your highlights so far? It has it’s tough bits, but it’s always worth it when you see so many people enjoying themselves and when they send you feedback afterwards telling you how much they enjoyed it. The sentence we hear the most is “we didn’t think we really liked folk music, but we came for the weekend and loved every single band that we saw.” And one of the highlights so far has been seeing how quickly the tickets starting selling as soon as we put them on sale for this year’s festival. It just shows that the audience love the new site as much as we did. It’s working really well. Organising and promoting live music events is notoriously difficult what would you say your main challenge has been so far and how did you overcome it? There have been loads of challenges over the years. One of the earliest challenges when we were first starting out was making sure the right people that want to buy tickets get to hear about the event. Advertising in the right places is key. Every year we spend ages putting flyers and posters everywhere we possibly can. You book bands from all over the world and also younger and up and coming bands which has been your favourite band to work with so far? Nizlopi. They came in 2014 and were an absolute pleasure from start to finish. They did a songwriting workshop for us too and it went so well, we had to have them back for more of the same, so we’ve booked

Catherine Burke

them again this year. They’re brilliant performers - and amazing to have hanging out at the festival. What are your personal highlights from the festivals so far? I always love the beard competition and the fancy dress. Especially the kids when they put their beard wigs on. And since we’ve been doing the quite open fancy dress themes, some of the ideas that people come up with are hilarious. What advice would you give someone looking into booking a festival of their own? Make sure you get a good team of people to work with you. There are always so many things to do - more than you’d even imagine and having the right team is essential. When you yourselves go to festivals what are your must haves in regards to items you take with you camping? Any festival survival tips? Wet wipes, toilet paper, camper van with my own personal toilet! Is there anything else you’d like to say to the people going or thinking about going to the Purbeck valley folk festival? Make sure you book your tickets early because they’ve been selling really well this year, and as the festival is getting a little bigger each year, there’s a distinct possibility that we will sell out this year. I’d hate anyone that knew they wanted to come to miss out by not getting their tickets in time! - Interview Questions By Pip Sickness

DORSET MUSIC | JUNE 2016

CRAIG CHARLES

You’re quite prolific on the Dorset festival scene and are involved in several events... tell us a little bit about yourself and the events you run... After many years of being in Pronghorn and being a major player in putting on the Endorse It Festival I decided it was time for a change of direction. So after jumping ship from Endorse It in 2011 and Pronghorn in 2012, I had the idea of putting on a small festival, for around 500 people with a hillbilly/rockabilly/ skiffle feel to it. So set about putting the Wonky Donk Festival together. The first official one happened in 2012 and within a couple of years this became a sellout event. We felt that what we’d created was something we didn’t want to change too much, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it right? So rather than making this bigger we decided to look at putting other events together, so we introduced Acoustic Movement in 2014, followed by Calanfest and Alice’s Wicked Tea Party in 2015. This year sees us adding Rustic Stomp festival in Lymington (Hampshire’s own version of Wonky Donk) and Dark Holler as well as the Crawwdaddy Roots Club at Freestyle on Holton Heath near Poole.

FROM ENDORSET IN DORSET TO DARK HOLLER AND WONKY DONK

We pull aside one of the busiest festival organisers in Dorset. With 5 festivals this summer plus the launch of a new roots club, there’s no stopping G and his team.

“ YOU NEED TO GET THE BALANCE RIGHT BETWEEN THE HARD WORK YOU PUT IN AND GETTING TO ENJOY YOUR OWN FESTIVALS. “ Aside from live music what else can people expect from your events? At this years Wonky Donk we will have the Gentlemen and Rogues Club barbers so the gents can get their barnets sorted out with a live music accompaniment, a good selection of ales and ciders from the bar including the Bath West award winning Cranborne Chase Cider and ales from the Bournemouth Brewing Company, some fantastic coffees from the Greatest Little Coffee Box on Earth and a few other little surprises as well.

Graham “Big G” Cullen

How do you decide which bands/acts to book? Do you have any specific criteria? Each event has a slightly different criteria. Wonky Donk and Rustic Stomp have this Rockabilly/Skffle/Hillbilly vibe going on with lots of local favourites such as Quinn’s Quinney the Trav Cats and Black Water County, Dark Holler’s line-up comes from a darker end of roots music having links to the Muddy Roots Festival in Belgium and featuring artists from America and mainland Europe. Acoustic Movement is very much a chilled end of season event with a fair few solo acts and duets but all, as the name suggests, very much acoustic rather than electric based music. Alice’s Wicked Tea Party is very different from everything else we’re putting on coming from an alternative/punk direction and The Crawdaddy Roots Club is a new venture where we will be putting on a monthly club night at Freestyle Music in Holton Heath. The first one will be on 1 st July where Goddamn Gallows will be supported by Catratcher.

If you had to narrow it down what has been your biggest high and lowest point booking these events so far? The biggest high is always when the tickets are sold, everything is running well and people are on site having a great time. I spent years when first putting events on, not being able to remember watching bands and then realised that I was always facing the wrong way. I was getting my highs from watching the audience having a great time rather than from a particular performance, and knowing that I’d played such a big part in providing that. The lowest points are always harder to remember after it’s all over, but I suppose on the occasions where we’ve worked really hard at something and afterwards it’s in the red. That can be a bit demoralising, but fortunately that has only happened very rarely. Do you get to enjoy your own events? I do now, compared to Endorse It, which became all work and no play, when we put the first WD on I spent the week leading up to it running around, sorting

the bar out etc. My partner and I did the first shift on the bar then the second shift turned up saying “Right off you go then” and it was only at this point that I realised that from there on in I had very little to actually do. I was able to do weird things like watch bands, have a drink and chat with people. So yes I do get to enjoy my own events. Having run these events successfully for a number of years now if you could go back in time and give yourself one piece of advice what would it be and why? The agreement when we started putting on Wonky Donk was that if it stopped being fun then we’d stop doing it. You need to get the balance right between the hard work you put in and getting to enjoy your own festivals. Were at the beginning of summer now what should we be putting in our diaries for the rest of 2016? We’re putting on our newest event The Crawwdaddy Roots Club on 1 July at the new venue at Freestyle on Holton Heath. Wonky Donk 15 16 July – this is the not to be missed party of the summer. You need to have a seriously good reason not to be at this one. Acoustic Movement 16 17 September – the chilled out last airing of your tent before the cold nights draw in. All festival tickets are available through Big Brother in Parkstone, Square Records in Wimborne, Beatnik Emporium in Southampton or online on www. wegottickets. Calanfest Rustic Stomp Alice’s Wicked Tea Party Dark Holler have already passed this year. They’ve gone down a storm, so next year there will be a higher demand for tickets! BEHINDwith THE SCENE Dom Patience

“There’s just something incredible about someone telling you that they picked a line up you believed in to be their first experience of live music”

Welcome to our new BEHIND THE SCENE section. We will be taking a look at the promoters, venues owners and other valuable assets who keep the local music scene alive. This month we have a chat with Dom Patience who has been successfully running Chalk Inc promotions and bringing great shows to town for the best part of a decade. You’ve been promoting shows for a number of years now. What would you say has been your most successful show to date and why do you think it was?

It all depends on how you’re measuring success. I mean from a numbers point of view, it will probably be Hadouken! the first time I had them play, and sell out, the Old Fire Station. As that’s the largest crowd I have had at a show. But then, Skindred was my first ever sell out, which for my 10th ever show I considered a massive success. Or Jim Jefferies, as it was my first comedy show and sold out 2 months in advance. There are others, but yeah, all I could consider to be the most successful for reason or another.

What has been the show you are most proud of booking.

This again could be any show. As the thing that gives me a lot of pride in what I do is when someone walks up to me or messages me and says it was their first ever show and how much they enjoyed it. I dunno, there’s just something incredible about someone telling you that they picked a line up you believed in to be their first experience of live music, as that memory will last with them for a lifetime.

If you had unlimited resource and could pick a line up of three bands who would you book? Oh god...

urmmm... I’m taking this as a dead or alive deal too. If I had the resources I am sure I could handle some resurrection if needed. So in that case, it will probably have to be the 3 bands I first really go in to, as it’s those bands I owe the most to. Pantera, Deftones and Nirvana.

What’s coming up in the future?

had. So I decided I would put on a charity show at my school. I spoke to the teachers and got the ok, and then started to talk to bands locally / at any show I’d go to across the UK. Slowly got a line up together and went from there!

What is the “biggest” band you’ve booked. Or who would you say is the biggest band you’ve booked?

The band I’ve booked that have gone on to be the biggest is probably You Me At Six. But I put them on when they were still in the 3/400 capacity venues.

You’ve been known to support upcoming bands that then make it big quite soon after - who do you currently have your eye on as the next big thing? Black Peaks. Creeper (been saying it since their first show). The Lion & The Wolf. I could keep listing so many bands, so much good music around currently.

Which have been your most successful show to date in terms of attendance and also for sheer enjoyability?

The first time I put on Hadouken!. 800 people, sold out show. It was crazy. And we all went to party after and the guys (and girl), did an impromptu set in iBar (now the Anvil). It was a great night.

Most promoters will also have their fair share of failures what are the most frustrating aspects of being a promoter? Finding the new / best ways to reach your audience. I have had kids complain about missing a show (the day after) when I had put a flyer in their hand for it the day before. Another is people complaining about not having money the day before a show, when it has been on sale for 3 months previously. Or that they wish they had gone to a show because now band X are their favorites. Just the constant conversation of telling people to go to shows regardless. If you trust the promoter to do good shows, take a risk. Every band you love started off as a local band, so go watch them.

Bands can be notoriously difficult to organise at times (the phrase herding cats springs to mind) - what are the most frustrating issues that come up?

I have some great shows coming up, one of the fastest rising bands in the country at the moment, Moose Blood, and cramming them in to the smallest venues they have played for a while (July 28th : Anvil (matinee) and The Winchester).

Putting on the shows hasn’t been too bad... there’s the whole turning up late and then not having enough time to set up and then there being issues with the show. But, there’s only so much I can do. Its when I have been on tour that it becomes a bigger issue.

The Hyena Kill & LTNT... two great rock / bluesy bands from the UK. Certainly bands to be keeping your eyes on (July 22nd : Anvil)

You also work full time around the gigs you put on - how do you find the time?

Napoleon, who have constantly been on the fringe of taking the next big step in the UK metal scene. And their debut album has just come out, so hopefully that will start giving them the push (Aug 1st at Anvil). And have some other bits in the pipeline that will be getting people excited. Go like Bournemouth Live on Facebook to catch announcements.

How did you start booking shows?

Was whilst I was doing my GCSE’s. I wasn’t in a band but wanted to get involved with music and the band bashes we

I don’t really stop. My phone or laptop are constantly close by, everyday. My other half will confirm this and probably say how much she hates it haha. I just send offers, put together costings, put out flyers or posters, whenever I can.
