This month we sit down with Mark Berry of The Winchester to talk about the history of the venue, what created it’s success and what the plans are for the future. When it closes it’s doors this month it will mark the end of a nine year venture, which has seen countless bands and DJ’s grace it’s stage. We also take a look at the upcoming festival season with Dorset Volksfest and Yellowbrick Festival among those providing music and sunshine.

Bournemouth has an ever growing rock and metal scene, so we were excited to learn that there was a brand new rock bar coming to town - Zephyr. This is in keeping with the recent countrywide trend of bars becoming the hotspots of town centres, slowly replacing all but the best clubs as drinkers go-to social zones. We went down on opening night to find out what the crack was, and from what we remember (after a few lemonades) had a great night! The bar has an international feel, lots of open space with communal tables as well as booth style seating and a couple of pool tables. This was complemented with an awesome 70s and 80s rock soundtrack and a long bar with some interesting spirits and bottles. Decor wise Zephyr is quite americana in style, what I would imagine an LA rock joint to be, but in the heart of Bournemouth. We caught up with owner Tom ‘Atlas’ Wyatt after the dust had settled to find out more.. So, new bar! Your a month in now, how’s it all been going? Hey man, it’s been a crazy month with all the trials and tribulations you’d expect from a new venture. I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t hard but it’s been supremely rewarding as well. Finally seeing the last few months worth of work come to fruition is a fantastic feeling. We’ve been getting nothing but positive feedback for everyone coming in, and when they’re in here they always seem to be smiling and having a great time. Can’t ask for more than that. Tell us about the vision for Zephyr and what we can expect from a visit there? The vision for Zephyr is to create a chilled classic rock bar, somewhere you can come and experience both classic tunes and discover new drinks you might not have heard of. We’re bringing back the feel and vibe of classic American bars where everyone knows your name, and is always ready and willing to suggest a new drink to you. There a few other rock bars in town, have you made a conscious effort to do something different in order to stand out from the pack or are you not thinking too much about what others are doing on concentrating on yourself? We’re not thinking too much about the others and focusing our efforts on ourselves. The concept of Zephyr is so far removed from anything Bournemouth has to offer. The base idea for the bar is something Gordon and I have been working on for a few years. However the more unique aspects, such as the lack of draught beer and the heavy emphasis on bottles is something I picked up while travelling and working abroad, especially in New Zealand and Australia. It’s not something you see in the UK a great deal so I figured I’d be a great addition to the Bournemouth scene. I see from my research this isn’t your first rodeo, having been a part of Sharkeys in the past, what lessons did you take from doing that project to Zephyr? Are you stealing my catchphrase? I’m pretty sure you are. The main things I brought from Sharkeys to Zephyr are organisational, contractual, and general negotiation skills. All the incredibly fun back office stuff. Gordon says I bring a flamboyant aspect to the bar, and I’m not disinclined to disagree with him. Speaking of Gordon, thanks to his years of service in various venues,
including a long tour in Aruba, the front of house is mainly his domain. So you have him to thank for anything you can physically see. Between the two of use, we somehow make one competent manager! One of the things that jumps out from your bar is the eclectic bottled beer selection, was there a deep selection process or did you just pick things that you guys like, and if so which ones do we need to try? Honestly, we just flick through the catalogue and choose the most exciting and interesting looking bottles, generally with the funkiest looking labels. Joking aside, with Gordons cocktail experience he’s a dab hand at picking unique spirits and knowing what to pair them with to create awesome cocktails and just general drinks. Thanks to my history of running a local brewery, ale knowledge is my forte and I can normally find a beer to suit each person’s taste. But it mainly comes down to the labels. As for one to try? Gordon’s suggestion is the snow leopard vodka, mixed with whatever you like. His pick is somewhat altruistic as for every bottle that is sold, 15% of all profits go towards the Snow Leopard Conservation Project. Talking of drinking, where do you like to hang out when you’re not at your place, and have you taken any inspiration from other local venues? When I’m not at my place, I’m sleeping in my flat and Gordon tries to spend some time with his non work wife. However, on the off chance we’re not working and exhausted you can usually find us propping up one of Bournemouth’s other fine establishments. This place has been a plan for many years, so most bars we might have taken inspiration from have closed or changed since then. However you’ll always notice little things to take onboard... You’ve got an amazing space with a strong ‘rocker’ vibe, any plans to further your entertainment in terms of jukebox, DJ, live? Well our Jukebox is finally close to how we want it. I still wake up, sweating after nightmares about reprogramming it to remove all the 90’s and 00 rap music. Those are some bad dreams. As for the others, there are conversations we’re having and certainly some exciting plans in the pipeline. As soon as we’re ready to announce anything, you’ll be the first to know! Finally, tell our readers why they should come to Zephyr! Because I work here and I have the best hair in town. Seriously though, we’re extremely proud of what we’ve created and we just want to share it with everyone. If you’re looking for a more classic rock feel, great drinks at stupidly low prices, friendly staff who’ve always got time to chat, then we’ve got you covered. Throw in a handful of pool tables and some classic console gaming and what more can you want?

For the past nine year, The Winchester has been a cultural hub like no other. It’s rare that in this day and age a venue puts creativity above profit and in doing so The Winchester gave birth to a loyal What a ride it’s been for The Winchester, community. The friendly and relaxed atmosphere created an enviroment where people could feel comfortable to be themselves without any pretences. These encouraging surroundings allowed for a venue where you were as likely to stumble upon a poetry night as a 60’s psych night or a drum and bass event. It also meant that these subcultures met, the people crossed over, minds met, many new ideas were born and of course Mark was willing to give those new ideas a home. We caught up with Mark Berry to discuss the life of Bournemouth’s best underground club and to discover what lies in store next.

It has been an inspirational response in such a sad and difficult time and I really want to say thank you so much to everyone for their love, support and kindness to me and my staff. Thank you, it really means a lot and has really helped us get through and stay focused.
What was your initial vision when you started the project and has it changed over time? I have always loved the arts, all
of them no matter what shape or form. I am passionate about freedom, creativity and self expression. I am also passionate about community, bringing people together and giving them a space to be free, to vent, to dance, to sing, to be happy and find kindred spirits and although I didn’t realise it at the time or as it was evolving this is what has happened here. I would like to say I planned it but I didn’t, it just happened, almost magically. They say energy is magnetic and people are drawn together and attracted to each other and places by their shared energy,dreams and
spirit and somehow I feel this has happened here. I don’t want to sound corny but there is a line in the film “Field of Dreams” that somehow rings true “build it and they will come.” So many wonderful, talented, creative and kind people have come to the Winch over these last amazing nine years and helped and given and shared.In many ways they made this place, we all made it happen because there was a need for it to happen.
Did you imagine it lasting 9 years at the start or was it more of an ‘open and see what happens’ kind of venture? To
be honest I wasn’t sure at the beginning. I knew what I wanted but I didn’t know if it would work. I left Dusk till Dawn to come here and in many ways a lot of the groundwork and contacts I had made started there. The Winchester, 39 Poole Hill, as a space had so much more to offer as a physical space, so much more potential to do so many cool things. It is much more of a theatrical performance space than Dusk, which even though I loved it and enjoyed my time there was essentially just a nightclub, a great nightclub but the physical space had limitations. Where as with The Winch the sky was the limit, we could put on live music,live art,cinema, theatre, exhibitions anything communal, pretty much any type of event and with the late licence we could also push
the envelope on the underground dance music scene. And because it isn’t too big, two hundred and twenty capacity we could take chances on the more edgy and challenging, thought provoking entertainment we didn’t have to do commercial or mainstream stuff, which in a way helped us create a niche because Bournemouth already has so many commercial and mainstream venues so it felt like there was a need in Bournemouth for something different.
The whole landscape has changed since you opened, in both the way people consume entertainment and alcohol to the economic climate, how has this affected your business over the years and can you remember some of the key changes? One of the key changes was the
late licencing. When I was young you would be out by eight pm on a friday or saturday night and back home crashed by two or three am. The more relaxed late drinking laws really changed people’s social habits and behavior. Also the Winch started up at the same time as the global economic recession kicked in and that was really challenging times. At the same time it was exciting because it felt new. The old rulebook had been torn up and it felt like we were in new and unpredictable territory, almost making it up as we went along and the ethos of The Winch seemed to suit these new times. Don’t get me wrong, it has been tough to survive, a real battle sometimes but incredibly rewarding and memorable.
Do you feel these changes have made it harder or easier to survive as an independent venue? The changes both
helped and hindered. Like any changing landscape, you had to adapt to survive. I almost feel that it is harder as an independent venue to survive now in such a corporate and commercial social and business culture we are living in today. There is economically less opportunity for independent business today, it has all been soaked up by the big guys, big money, big entertainment. Every high street all over the country looks the same, big chains, lowest common denominator Like you say people have changed the way they consume alcohol and entertainment. I don’t like to generalise but it feels like we all want to conform nowadays, like we are being brainwashed by social and mainstream media.
Despite losing the physical space, I hear The Winchester is far from dead, tell us about the council petition. Louise Keeley
organised the petition. It is not really a petition in the sense that we cannot change what is happening, that is all big business and contracts have already been signed. What we wanted to do is show to the powers that be, is that there is a need and demand for what we do in Bournemouth. We wanted to give a voice to our community of creative and independent souls. This is a moment in time and we wanted to record it, to have something to show that we existed and what we have been doing here for the last nine years mattered and meant something. I have really enjoyed the collaborative working experience, it has been rewarding and incredibly challenging at times but I feel it has shaped what we have done here. This has been a community space. For the people, by the people and I am grateful to everyone who has put on or tried to put on events here. Obviously it doesn’t always go smooth and some people are difficult to work with, sometimes I have been difficult to work with. The best promoters are the ones who love what they do and combine that with a sound business sense and a willingness to work hard. People,communication and networking skills are vital to a promoter but you also need to have original ideas and be doing something that people want to get involved with.
What are the next steps and where would you like it to end up? The next step
is to try and relocate. Louise, myself and all the Winchester staff and family still feel there is a purpose in what we do and we very much want to continue it. We are not done yet, I think we are even more passionate about it now than when we started and I think we know more about stagecraft and events and how to make things happen now, we have learnt the hard way. I think we may struggle to find a space as beautiful and perfect as 39 Poole Hill has been but we are determined to try. Yellow Brick Festival is a brand new Little Giants - Taking influence from the likes of Robin Schulz, Avicii, Years & Years, Clean family friendly, youth orientated Bandit and James Bay, Little Giants started life music and arts festival, taking place at the picturesque riverside as a covers band before moving on to their own material fusing indie, dance and acoustic. of Julian’s Bridge in Wimborne Minster this July. The event aims to support and showcase unsigned artists and entertainers from across the UK but with a strong emphasis on local talent. Organiser Emily has also been working with local traders, hoping to achieve a ‘flea market’ style vibe in the heart of the festival, including an entertainment zone and ‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ eating area. Music wise there are 2 stages to enjoy - ‘The House Party Tent’ and ‘The Homegrown Tent’, each with a great lineup of live music over the weekend. We’ve had a look at the headliners and listed some of our top picks below: Cassia - Saturday’s headliners hail from
Macclesfield and play, in their own words, ‘Calypso Tropi-pop’, which is unique fusion of a West African influenced rhythmic calypso style with indie and garage rock to create a catchy but different sound that is perfect for a summer’s day! A relatively new band on the scene they have already developed a strong following with debut single Moana racking up 11 thousand plays in a couple of months.

Leeches (pictured below) - Dorset Music have seen Leeches a few times now and they are an outstanding live act, fusing infectious pop hooks with fuzzy alt-rock. Mellow but yet somehow heavy in parts with lots of psyche influence and even some stoner rock riffs thrown in. Their debut single, ‘Inside Voices’ was released in early October 2016, and the band have finally got themselves together to release their debut EP on cassette via Leisure Records.

Formed in 1977 to promote Ian Dury’s album ‘New Boots and Panties’ on the first Stiff Records tour of the UK. The Blockheads are fronted by Derek ‘The Draw’ Hussey, who was Ian’s best friend and is now the band’s vocalist and wordsmith. Chaz Jankel, Norman Watt-Roy, John Turnbull and Mick Gallagher still remain from the original band and the current line-up is augmented by John Roberts on drums and a rolling line up of saxophonists.These legendary Brit-Funkers will be playing all the old favourites and some new material spanning their illustrious career!

Dumb Lovers is a new project from the South Coast, a pair of friends with a clear-cut musical vision. Fusing synth pop with ethereal vocals, early writing sessions swiftly found the two musicians clicking into place. New cut ‘Oscar’ is the pair’s introduction to the world, the first point of call for those new to Dumb Lovers. Dumb Lovers employ the intelligent arrangements of Cocteau Twins with a juxtaposition that introduces darker guitars that are closer to The Kills.

by Harry D-Tox For everyone that’s survived the heavy weight line up at On The Bus Festival, recovered from the busy Back to Basics Birthday weekend and still in Dorset with itchy raving feet over the Glastonbury period, fear not, as the mighty Low Down Deep recordings crew take over the Old Fire Station and bring you an onslaught of fresh jump up dubs at this month’s Enter/Drumfunk’s event on Saturday 24th . Every time Low Down Deep come to town it’s a road block session so don’t expect any different this time. On the night they have head honcho and fully certified badman Logan D, this artist lives and breathes DB and being the son of Jungle royalty Micky Finn, you know this aint no hype talk and there will be no half measures! He will be giving you 90 minutes of dubplate bassline pressure, alongside studio and dancefloor dons Heist, Pleasure and Dominator with MC’s Azza and Grima (TNA), Eksman and Traumatic with support from Whitey, Ultrah, Dysko and local golden tongued big guns, MC’s Skydro and Felon. Low Down Deep Recordings is one of the strongest DB labels out there, having gone from strength to strength bringing you anthem after anthem over the last 10 years, winning best record label at the 2015 National DB awards, then staying in the top 3 at last year’s and this year’s awards. Heist is one of those rare artists where his production is of such high calibre and tracks so versatile whilst always keeping his sound, that he has releases on pretty much every big Jungle/DB record label there is out there. Make sure you check out his Purple Haze release on LDD’s Weed Series Vol 5 which came out last month.

The album features searing resonator guitars and even Dorset based singer/ combines ‘80s Hip Hop’s songwriter Phil “Jinder” signature drum machine Dewhurst released his critically acclaimed album the Roland TR-808, with a “Traditional Dark” in 2015. raucous blues slide guitar. This year sees the release The whole album was of this latest offering called entirely directed, recorded “Kingsize Blackfoot”; a ten and performed by the one track album that embraces man machine that is Jinder. American Roots music, Country/Blues and a whole The album opens with the lot in-between. The title is a atmospheric “Great Plains”; nod to Jinder’s 6’7” height which conjures up the huge rolling open American and his Blackfoot Sioux American Indian heritage, landscapes, and would not be out of place playing of which you don’t see
over the opening titles of Western movie. Over the 10 tracks Jinder follows a path covering traditional Blues styles with plenty of expertly played slide guitar, combining with acoustics. Each tune benefits from his considerable vocals which have an incredible range and give the tunes a real depth and belief. The lead single to be released ahead of the album is “Brother Can You Spare a Dime”. The guitar intro to “Automobile Blues” is worth the purchase money alone and this version of the Lightnin’ Hopkins 1944 track is given a traditional makeover. Jinder is indeed a very rare talent who has produced something here that is quite extraordinary and well worth investing in.
