Its spring (nearly) This month we kick things off with a review of the grand re-opening of Sixty Million Postcards, as well as a sneak peak at the brand new Buffalo site in Lansdowne, and more importantly, their music line ups… Elsewhere in the mag we take a look at the countywide Sing To Raise event in support of the Diverse Abilities charity. Chinners looks at pop cult heroes Tours’s on off gig at The King Charles, D-tox gives us the low down on his new radio show plus all the previews and listings you need to plan out your month.

Let’s face it Bournemouth’s indie community may as well have extended ‘dry January’; Postcards is their church so what are they to do when it’s closed!
Upon arrival you immediately notice heated beach huts in the garden, a welcome feature many people said they liked, as well as an adequate level of other seating.
As an avid member of the parish I, like the rest of the punters filling the venue to the brim at the reopening party, was excited to see what they’d done with the place. Postcards created a lot of hype around the event enticing the social media user to drag themselves off their sofa on a freezing Thursday using sign up tickets (legitimate, it was packed) and Instagram Stories to give people a quick tour of the venue and its ‘one night only’ oyster and beer tasting treats on offer!
Heading inside you’re welcomed by a lighter colour scheme: candyfloss gone trendy! Noteworthy changes include updated toilets, more open plan booths in the same place as before with graffiti beach scenes as backdrops and a more stylised bar rid of clutter serving a massive selection of drinks, craft beers and ales.
After 11 years Postcards was clearly in the need of a good lick of paint which they have not only done but they’ve revamped the whole style and layout. In my opinion venues get their identity in the dust and grime, which Postcards has unavoidably lost for a short while, but with an incredible list of upcoming events we will be dancing those quirks straight back in as we fall in love all over again with Postcards and it’s new look.
enjoyed with a cold pint of cider in the summer sun of a festival field. Each band had it’s different idea on dancefloor anthems with Hotsteppas tracks being instant singalongs and Dharma’s skilful lyricism but with both bands deservedly having the biggest dancing crowds I’ve ever seen at Postcards; it’s obvious everyone was loving the night! Nice work 60, you’ve pulled off the near impossible; pleasing most of the old clientele as well as putting beaming smiles on the faces of quite a few new members of the Postcards clergy.
My favourite feature is creating a clear gig area moving the DJ area and stage to the back corner - James Wadsworth ready for throwing dancefloor shapes. Kudos to promotors We Broke Free who moved away from their love of upcoming indie to put on the perfect party line up blessing the crowd with the very musically accomplished Hotsteppas and local supergroup Selby and the Dharma Blitz. It seemed brilliantly ironic that on the coldest week of the year we were all dancing to tunes that were clearly written to be
BUFFALO BAR IS BACK AGAIN
Over the past ten years or so, Winton’s Buffalo Bar established itself as something of an oasis in a desert of identikit chain pubs that line that particular stretch of Wimborne Road. A place where artists and musicians mingled with bricklayers and plumbers, united by the promise of a decent pint, good honest pub grub, and the best rock jukebox on the South Coast. That dream ended New Years Eve last year, as the building was sold to Lidl to extend their car park. Winton’s loss however, is Lansdowne’s gain, as owner Tom Russell used the funds to take over the popular, if criminally underused, Bomo Bar building. Anyone into the reggae, ska, drum n’ bass, and (then fledgling) dubstep scene about a decade ago will fondly remember the site as Empire Club, home of the iconic Dubnium club night, among many others. Utilising the building’s sizeable ground and first floors (the basement will continue as the Bomo Bunker under current management), Tom and his team have successfully transplanted everything that made Winton’s Buffalo Bar such a success. Every scrap of wood, every Martin Butler doodled door, every fixture and fitting (including the staff themselves) has been brought over to ensure that old regulars feel that the move has been nothing but an evolution in the story of Buffalo.
Continuing the tried and tested ethos of ‘anything goes as long as it’s good’, managers Charlie and Craig will be bringing to Lansdowne a venue that oozes charm and good vibes, with a jukebox as varied as its staff and regulars, a mix of quality, free, live music and an eclectic, ever-evolving line-up of alternative DJs every weekend. The food at Buffalo was always a major reason for making the trip, and the famously generous portions of decent pub grub, including our home made signature burgers, will survive the journey across town fully intact, with an expanded veggie and vegan menu, plus chef’s specials, seven days a week. They say everything happens for a reason, and although the old Buffalo Bar will remain a huge part of many people’s memories (or lack of...), sometimes a clean break with the past coupled with a clear vision for the future is the best thing for everyone.

High Energy Dirty Grooves Formed way back in 1995 Mr Fungus are back gigging after a short hiatus. The band, fronted by local face of the open mic scene ‘Nacho’ Jase along with Lee Randall and Paul Williams, are the definition of dirty rock’n’roll. Expect a set packed with big riffs, catchy choruses, pounding drums and filthy guitar solos, paying homage to the best hard rock of the 80s with their own modern twist. 15TH MARCH | CELLAR BAR A night of Motown
A nine piece live band based on the South Coast, Wonderband first performed together back in 2013 for a fundraising event playing the music of Stevie Wonder. Due to popular demand the band have since been performing on a regular basis adding more show-stopping classics from the likes of Earth Wind & Fire, Chic, The Jackson 5 and more. Now fronted by soulful vocalists Ivan J (Dellimore) CJ Edwards and Kimberley Kirby, alongside rhythm and brass sections to die for, Wonderband faithfully and authentically reproduce these iconic tunes in a powerful and highly entertaining live show!
16TH MARCH | CANVAS Detroit bruisers head to Bournemouth
Negative Approach are an American hardcore punk band, formed in Detroit, Michigan in 1981. Initially little known outside their hometown, they are now idolised on the Detroit rock and punk scene as an elite ‘old school’ band and have been cited as influences for countless hardcore bands since, despite only releasing one studio album in their time as a band, although the rumor mill has been spinning as of late about a much anticipated follow up.

West Yorkshire’s Embrace once achieved Indie anthems of epic Coldplay proportions (who actually supported Embrace early in their career!). From multiple top ten hits to their three number one albums, sold out arena shows and well over a million album sales behind them, Embrace were on the crest of a wave when they suddenly vanished without a trace. They returned some eight years later and are now firmly back on a roll with a 2018 album; ‘Love Is A Basic Need’.

His excellent band comprising of Sam Kelly on drums, Spy Austin on bass and Paul Jopson on keyboards will be joining him when he hits Dorchester this April.

6TH APRIL | DORCHESTER CORN EXCHANGE Hometown heroes back where it all started
Alt-rock band Air Traffic became local sensations after signing to major label EMI and releasing a string of a hits back in the mid 2000’s before supporting Snow Patrol on a UK arena tour. The band would go on to enter the UK chart multiple times including their top 30 single “Shooting Star”, and shared a stage with Elbow, R.E.M and Radiohead. Having recently reformed last year they are set to rock their hometown once again this April.

Founded all the way back in 1955, Diverse Abilities is the only charity in Dorset that supports children and adults with profound physical and learning disabilities, and their families. The charity has grown massively and now supports over 700 children and adults throughout the county. Providing a range of assistance, support and education services through its Children’s Team, Adult Services and Langside School, it has become a lifeline to many families in Dorset. This month a number of Dorset community groups are hosting music events as part of the Diverse Abilities ‘Sing to Raise’ initiative from Boscombe through Wimborne to Weymouth. The event will unite choir groups, pubs, individuals, bands and schools singing and performing in various ways to raise funds for the charity. Most of the events are free entry with the venues asking for donations toward this great cause. Here our some of our top picks to check out:

Andy and Mark started playing together in 1991, forming their acoustic duo 12 years ago. Gut & Steel, named after the guitar strings they play with (one plays gut, one steel), is, in their own words: “music stripped right back to it’s acoustic bones, we like to do things our way, rather than slavishly copy the originals’.
