Within a genre dominated by US bands such as Less Than Jake, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish, Ska-punk rockers Spunge are one of the UK’s leading acts. The band claim to have hit upon the sound by accident, having amalgamated their collective influences of Sublime, Stiff Little Fingers and The Clash. Pip Sickness caught up with Alex Copeland ahead of their show at The Anvil with Slagerij, Crash Landings and Escape From 98 on the 29th May 2016.

Aside from your own genre what other types of music do you listen to? (Any secret Justin beiber fans in the band?)

I listen to anything, if it’s a good song, it’s a good song, regardless of the genre. Having said that I don’t search out some types... but if I accidentally hear it on the radio or whatever and I like it then it doesn’t matter to me one bit who or where it came from...

What rules do you have on your bus to stop you hating each other after a week?

You made a point in earlier days of always taking an unknown band on tour with you. Is there anyone out there Constant piss taking from the first at the moment that you have minute of tour. And by that I mean brutal piss taking. That way we have no your eyes on?

level to take it to for anything actually serious... The one actual thing we do respect though is if someone needs a bit of space for whatever reason, we give it to them, we’ve been around each other so long that anything that Without incriminating is bugging someone can either be yourselves what would you say noticed before it gets any legs, or we is your biggest guilty pleasure know when to give each other 5 mins that people might not know and then all is back to normal.

about you?

I’ve put most of it out there.... I guess my man crush on Robert Downey Jr might count though....

Oh, and if you fall asleep with your shoes still on then you’re fair game for any pranks at all.

DORSET MUSIC | APRIL 2016

My fave live pub in Cheltenham shut down a few months ago and I am yet to find a new watering hole with music like that place... so I’m out the loop a little at the moment... but you do see a lot of openers on tours that are 10 times better than a lot of the stuff that gets a chance because of luck or ‘talent’ shows... shame...

“ MY MAN

CRUSH ON ROBERT DOWNEY JR

SPUNGE

You played the inaugural download festival in 2003, If you could pick the headliners for 2017 ([spunge] excluded) who would you choose?

The [spunge] cover band that we would form with the current members of [spunge] now that we know [spunge] can’t do it ;) Or Sublime if we can turn back time a little...

If you could have one of your songs covered by any current artist, of any genre, who would it be, which song and who

Stupidly.... Kicking Pigeons by LMFAO for the crack. Seriously... Change Of Scene by Blink 182 - because I think that would really work... plus the royalties would be nice...

What’s next for [spunge]?

Live (mini) album coming out in May and then playing SlamDunk Festival and our own tour in the same week.... after that we have some one off shows planned (including the rescheduled Birmingham and London shows we had to rearrange from May) and then more of the same until either we fall down or no-one comes to say hey and bounce at a gig...

If you were only able to take one item with you on your next tour what would it be ?

The music industry has changed a hell of a lot over the last 20+ years. Especially with the shift to online music distribution, [spunge] seem to have embraced this shift using pledge music a few times now, how did you go about getting involved with this?

It seemed the natural thing to do. We had no label (well, our own) so it was a good way to get some buzz out there... also it is a very cool way to let the fans get involved properly... for our Greatest Hit....s they even chose the songs we would go into the studio to rerecord for the album... the money raising is good too of course because they are pre-ordering and getting exclusive stuff as a thank you... How we actually got involved doing it at first though was just a case of perfect timing, we were approached by PledgeMusic about doing something on there just as we were starting to discuss what we were going to be doing the next album on.

Do you believe this is the future of music?

I believe that giving the power back to the band is the future of it... although that’s how it used to be way back when too so it’s kind of full circle... which I’m happy about.

My shorts. Because otherwise I’d be completely naked. And I have only played maybe 3 shows in that entire time with long trousers on.... and one of those was because it was below zero and an outdoor show...

A QUICKIE WITH THE SUPPORT BAND

If you could go back to 1994 and give your younger selves one piece of advise on the night of your first ever gig what would it be?

Don’t turn the smoke machine on. (we hired it and it broke so the room filled with thick smoke for half the set, so much so that the video of it is just a white screen for most of it...)

How difficult do you think it would be if you as a band were just starting up now?

I don’t think it’s a case of more or less difficult/opportunities... it’s a case of different difficulties/opportunities... it still involves a lot of work and a dash of luck... just a lot more online promotion now than it was when we were playing every little place that would have us... we’re that old that the internet wasn’t really part of the deal back then... but we were on the road a LOT rather than trying to be seen on YouTube or something... so it’s the same game with different rules.

You’ve always been a DIY band and it seems that this is the way forward for a majority of new bands nowadays. Having had a lot of experience and upps and downs do you have any advise for younger/ newer bands? Any to do’s and not to do’s?

I always say the same to this sort of question.... Make sure you are doing it because you love to do it, that way if you make it then that’s a killer bonus, but if you don’t then you are still having a shit ton of fun while you stay at whatever level you are at.... The Crash Landings - what do we need to know in one sentence? Punk rock: 3 chords, 2 minutes, hooks & 4/4 time Most debaucherous act committed by your band? Guitar solos Pet peeves of gigging? Stairs. Especially when you’re bringing cabs. Two bands who influenced you the most Can’t give you two bands, but stuff on Hellcat, Randale, Earache, A-T, Fat Wreck & 90’s Epitaph spring to mind. We hear you are starting a new label? Yep, finalising a local label to help bands distribute out to the digital download & streaming platforms. The plan is to front

the release costs and include mastering & marketing support as part of the label service. Eventually I’d like to offer studio time. If any readers would like to know more please contact me through social media. Whats in store this year? We’ve got a couple of gigs in May; the Watford Punk Collective 2 Night Stand on 14th & 15th.... that’s a great lineup with UK Subs, Argy Bargy, Wonk Unit, Dirt Box Disco...loads of good bands. Then we’re at The Anvil on the 29th supporting Spunge. Can’t wait for that one, it’s a bank holiday and heading towards a sell out. Then write some new songs and release an album!

Wareham’s ‘On The Bus’ is one of The South’s fasted growing festivals. Now into its fifth year, we’ve asked Adam Trimby to give you a little taster of what to expect from one of the South’s most vibrant mini-festivals. a Freefall gig disappointed and this time wont be any different. Not only this, but the collaborations with major music events, such as Vibez, Toma Sundays, Electric Chair and more, brings a local festival ambiance to its devotees. This distribution of local talent is not only a welcome change to the mainstream music festival but also delivers a diverse range of budding artists. However, not everyone can dance to every beat, so in those low periods when your feet are sore and the energy levels are low, head over to the Twisted Teapot for some acoustic jams and verbal remedies that will feed mind as well as your stomach.

estivals are becoming a staple of the Great British Summer. Sod your picnics, begrudging trips to Cornwall or just hanging loose at Butlins*. These days, festivals are taking the reigns and music appreciators of all ages are running for the fields of Avalon. After a plaguing few years of corporate domination in the festival scene, we are now seeing a revival in small-time carnival gatherings. At the mini-festival, spirits are high, the grass is clean and everyone smiles like they’ve just climbed Kilimanjaro, when they can barely make it out of their tents. This ethos is encapsulated by one of the South’s most exciting and accomplished festivals: On The Bus. Now into its fifth summer, the festival’s organisers offer music across four stages, featuring artists from near and far. Their focus is and always has been on local talent, amalgamating multiple events native to the Dorset area into one three-day celebration. However, On The Bus can also deliver big names. Last year highlighted Goldie Looking Chain, Mouseoutfit and Pronghorn as the headline acts, bringing some truly memorable performances to those in attendance. This year is no different, with three amazing artists waiting to take their places on the main stage early this June. First up is Ed Solo & Deekline, two Britain’s most talented DJs, ready to please the crowd with their formidable turntable skills and eclectic mash-ups. The Four Owls will grace the stage with their intense oral concoctions, potent in feather and verse. These guys will be one to watch for sure. Lastly, but by no means least, is Dorset’s very own Freefall Collective. These guys produce a carnival atmosphere with their fastpaced, intelligent music. No one has ever left

Sod your picnics, begrudging trips to Cornwall or just hanging loose at Butlins*.

All this and more is what has made On The Bus such a welcome addition to Dorset’s already bustling festival scene. Most festival-goers are looking for the next Glastonbury, but in the 70s Glastonbury was nothing like it is today. It was small, filled with local talents and supporters enjoying the beautiful British countryside to the sounds of music and the rhythms of dance. That same feeling is captured at On The Bus. You may think it’s fifty years too late - and you might be right - but maybe the idea of On The Bus isn’t to “make it big like Glasto”, a place which is now filled with a thousand faces you’ll never know the names of. Maybe the philosophy of the smaller festival is to consider the collective experience in locality, to rebuild a community through song, dance and musical expression. Therein lies the true purpose of the miniature-festival and the reasons why we should all pack up our tents and hop on the bus.

www.rock-regeneration.co.uk Once in a while someone who is usually frustrated with the local music scene comes along and tries their hand at promoting gigs. Sometimes this works and in most cases it fails miserably as things without proper care and attention can easily go wrong. The founder of a new venture Lifeboat Promotions George Fullerton is a massive fan of live music and is particularly passionate about the local music scene. He has been playing in his own band “Willowen’ since 2010 and has gained masses of knowledge dealing with promoters. This Knowledge along with a desire to bring out of town bands to Bournemouth and put them together with suitable local supports has given George a fast growing reputation as a new reliable go to promoter. There have been some very exciting events including gigs with Welsh rock trio The Decoy, acoustic punk from Arms & Hearts and a well-attended punk/pop show at the Anvil with Tuskens. The future is looking very bright for George with seven shows already booked with many more in the pipeline. There are shows featuring Death Remains, Bad Sign, Pretend Happy, Summer Drive Home, K**t and the Gang and an intimate 40 ticket only gig at Blueline studios with the hotly tipped singer/songwriter Katie Malco.
