Bournemouth rock bar Zephyr is fast approaching its one year anniversary. Since opening it has built a legion of dedicated regulars who love the chilled out vibes, great drinks selection and classic rock soundtrack. Zephyr will be holding a massive party to celebrate reaching one year old called Zephfest, it will feature a massive lineup of live music with acts including Metaprism, Black Water County, Compass, The Wilderpeople, Miseria Hallows, The Succulence and PXR5. We catch up with main man Gordon Kimber to recap on the last year and focus on the next. One year on! How does it feel to make it to your first birthday? - Scary

In truth all those were prior to opening, so much hard work went into turning the right, it has come round so quickly. It’s a venue around into what you see today. The bar top was particularly hard work, big achievement for everyone involved. Opening a bar there are always risks, so we had help from a good friend Joe, to make it to our first birthday in the style but making a bar top and back bar from railway sleepers was a real challenge. we have feels great.

It must have been a whirlwind of a year, can you tell us some of the highlights for you and the team?

It really has! Highlights? After all the hours we have put in, still being alive is one! Haha! Seriously though, I think we all would go with Easter weekend, we expected to be busy, but not as busy as we were. It was that busy on the Saturday we had a queue for entry at 3.15am, that’s just crazy! We broke every record we had set previously, it was mental but so much fun at the same time!

Was there any particular ‘smack your head against the wall’ moments you remember where you wondered why you did this to yourself?

What is the inspiration behind the upcoming Zephfest?

I want to provide our loyal customers with awesome events. I have always wanted to do something like this, so for us to do it ourselves and completely self fund it is awesome. For me it’s a real marker to show what we can put together and I’m not done yet!

The diversity of the line up is incredible, from heavy metal to rock to folk! How did you go about selecting the acts?

As you can imagine I had so many acts contact me to play when I announced ZephFest earlier this year, but this is something I had been planning since August last year. So when it came to

selecting acts, with exception to Sarges PXR5, I had been turning up at gigs and making notes on what I liked and didn’t like. At one point I had a list of 25 bands and had to whittle it down, it was hard work!

Which act(s) are you most looking forward to seeing in your venue?

I always look forward to Sarge doing something, he is such a character! All the bands are great at what they do, they are all worth catching so I can’t separate them, after all I did chose them all to play!

Often bars open up and are moulded by the regulars that make it their home away from home. Has Zephyr changed from your original vision pre opening, and if so how?

The only real thing we changed was our opening hours, most will remember that early on we were shutting at 2am, now on Thursday, Friday and Saturday we are open until 5am. We gave it a trial run leading up to Christmas and the response from our clientele was superb. We were getting thanked for staying open later and more and more people were coming down. So after New Years we made an announcement that from now

“Opening a bar there are always risks it feels great to make our 1st birthday in style”

Last time we spoke the secret back room was all very hush hush… can you spill any beans on your plans for it yet?

Haha, I’m fairly sure you ask me this every time you see me and you get the same answer, wait and see dear boy, wait and see!

With the experience you have gained running Zephyr over the last year would there be anything you would do differently, and if you could go back and give one year ago Gordon some advice what would it be? It was my idea to launch slow and go for word of mouth promotion/ recommendation and let it spread. I truly believe that word of mouth is golden, you listen to your friends far more than an advertising campaign. That’s not to say that in the early days I wouldn’t sometimes get a little worried and I probably stressed myself out a bit. Therefore, the advice would be have a whisky, chill out and stick to your ideals. As you can see, a year down the line it really has paid off! People who have been with us from the early days almost feel like family now and we have a fantastic rapport with our customers because of it.

on we would be open until 5am on the weekends, and Thursdays followed soon after. They asked, we responded and we were happy to!

What have you got planned for the next year of Zephyr?

Come on, do you really think I’m gonna give away all my secrets? Haha! All I will say is that I am starting to utilise my contacts in the music scene; of which I have many. You know the drill, keep your eyes on me as I have big plans for the future.

Gordon Kimber

It is out on the 6th June on Music Bear Records. The EP was recorded locally in Bournemouth at The Burrow with the capable guidance and expertise of Mathew Musial. The eight-piece band have built up an unshakeable chemistry with each of them having their own very individual parts to play. The melting pot of influences stretch far and wide with the band continuing to deliver infectious tunes that will push the very boundaries of your cranium.

Mark sings the hook that repeats ‘After the Rain’ that could easily get a crowd singing along together, it could possibly be describing a typical English Summer. Things are turned right upon their head for the final tune where Alison (Jay) gets her chance to deliver some very beautiful and delicate vocals. These are sung over some gentle acoustic guitar and Brad’s neatly plucked banjo. ‘Sick & Tired’ tells the hurt and pain of a troubled relationship. The band have a long list of dates ahead of them this Summer and they will be rolling out these and other new tunes at some of the many festivals that they are due to play.
