It all started when Ed Cares, one of London’s most in demand male nannies, was overheard humming a song he had written, by Katie, aged six, who persuaded him to form a band. Josh, eight, boldly proclaimed: “You’re probably my second favourite artists after Katie Perry”. We wanted to find out more about this band who have captured the hearts of the next generation, so caught up with Ed himself, ahead of their forthcoming show at 60 Million Postcards. Your sound certainly is unique, very 80s influenced with lots of synth, but also you’ve previously stated some of your inspirations come from the punk sounds of The Clash, which can be heard in the rawness of some of your more raucous tracks. Did you have a set sound in mind when you set out on this journey and has it changed over time? Oh hi! So I suppose we’ve always just wanted to make decent guitar music. I grew up listen to punk bands and will never tire of the sound of an electric guitar and the energy it brings, so in childcare we wanted to combine that with other soulful and more melodic influences. Could your summarise your music for the uninitiated? Like Toni Braxton in a cold bath. I understand you are a nanny when you’re not performing, aside from having school hours to write music how has this shaped you as a musician and do you play the children your music? Yeah the kids have heard all my music. We play it on the school run home. Incessantly. Nothing else. I could say something about them keeping me

young and shaping our music to be more youthful and open-eyed but it would probably be a lie. It’s just been a great job to have where I get in early, take them to school then spent five hours writing before picking them up, cooking dinner etc... Is Ed Cares a complete stage persona or yourself amped right up? Ed Cares is actually exactly the same as the real me. I Ed cares. You recently toured with indie heavyweights Bastille, how was the experience and how did it differ from your own headline shows? They were marginally bigger than our headline shows, I guess that was the main difference. It was really fun playing to such big crowds and gave us a confidence boost. We did only sell eight T-shirts on the whole tour though. What other upcoming bands have you played with recently that we should be keeping an eye out for? Jagara, The Spindlepop blues and Sissy Sissy. How has fan reception been to your new EP, ‘Made Simple’, and are there plans for a full length? It’s been great and it’s fun now releasing some more tunes, we’re gonna release our second EP next Easter. Not quite ready for an album yet but it’s starting to come together in our heads. What is next for Childcare? Glyn and I and maybe Emma are gonna have a jam this afternoon and we’re gonna make some jokes and slap each other on the backs. Mike Davis - The Guitar Shed The Guitar Shed in Boscombe is quickly becoming the place to go to restore your damaged axe to its fullest potential, with owner Mike Davis having been involved with bands and guitars since 1973. We sit down with Mike to chat about his career, from his youth work with the legendary 896 club in Boscombe, meeting Prince Charles, guitar teching, up to his current project. First off, tell us about the shed! How did you get started and how is it all going so far? Well, I think the idea of the Guitar Repair Shed has always been with me in some form or other. In the early days I always found myself tinkering with guitars and trying to find out about how they worked and eventually two years ago I did my first ‘official’ repair after deciding to start a proper repair business. I understand you were an integral part of the legendary 896 youth center in Boscombe. That venue was a big part of my early teens, can you tell us a bit about that project? The Bournemouth Youth Service asked me to start a music project for young people and so ‘Baseline’ (yes , that’s the correct spelling!) was created and it involved mostly young musicians who were in their first band. I’d concentrate on helping them plan live shows at the 896. They were

taught everything from how to properly soundcheck right down to the catering and all points in between. I’d take them on an annual trip to Marshall Amplification in Milton Keynes where we’d get shown round by Terry Marshall (Jim’s son) and the kids would hang on his every word - it was great for them. In the end we were taking young bands abroad and doing exchange visits - tiring, but happy days! Sadly the budget was pulled and the project finished and now, of course, the 896 is closed, but I was involved with that for about ten years.

Any bands from that time that went on to great things? Not really, you probably know yourself that at an early age bands come and go so quickly it’s difficult to hold something together for any length of time. We were organising a bandbash in Dorchester once and Richard Oakes was in a band that was going to play - he called to let us know that he couldn’t make it because he had an audition with Suede - the rest is history of course. I also ought to mention four guys that were in a local band called The Sons of Geronimo. They stayed together and even helped me out on some of the Youth Service stuff, they recorded an album (‘Twist’) and I went on to do sound for them at their pub gigs, we became good friends and they came so close to signing a record deal with Sony, I think they did two showcases. It was a sad day when they decided to split.

I hear you went to meet Prince Charles off the back of the music based youth work you did down here, what was that experience like and where did it end up going? Ha, yes, it was a bit surreal. March 2000, a letter dropped on my mat out of the blue asking me to attend a meeting at Prince Charles’ office in Regents Park to launch a Prince’s Trust project called ‘Mapping Hidden Talent’. When I got there, the launch was on the roof of the office block, all the equipment was set up and there was Charlie along with Jools Holland and Simon Mayo. Charlie told us that he wanted to stage a show for the young bands and asked me if I’d manage it! The young band put on their instruments and played Get Back, just as The Beatles did on the roof of the Apple Corp Building in Saville Row and Jools Holland sat in and played the piano solo for them. I thought any time now I’m going to wake up. It ended up with the Prince’s Trust hiring a club in London and we basically put on a posh version of a Baseline Bandbash - All the bands learn to work together sharing gear etc and take away a great memory - I certainly did.

‘How did the Georgia Satellites influence you in guitar teching and has it given you a unique approach to guitar repair?’ Yes, funny how music can change your life isn’t it? In my lifetime four bands have influenced what I’ve done in the music world and the Satellites were by far the most prominent. It was 7th May 1987 at the Marquee Club in London. It was their first UK show and they were at number two in the charts with their first album. Their gear had got held up at customs and they had to hire in from John Henry’s - guitars and all, and I just offered my help. They were so grateful for the help, that we all stayed in touch and they invited me out for the following three UK tours - talk about a learning curve……..I still try to keep my hand in these days on the live shows, I do guitars for Rick Richards (Izzy Stradlin) when he’s over here from Atlanta, last one we did was supporting Blackberry Smoke at Camden Barfly and when I was over there last year I was working with Toby Marriott (Steve Marriott’s son), he’s a nice guy. Another worthy mention is Willow Robinson, his bass player Jimi Crutchley (Dead Sea Skulls /Quireboys) got me the gig at the O2 in Oxford, supporting the Jesus and Mary Chain. As far as guitar repair goes at an actual gig, you generally find that guitar techs only do things like string changes, cleaning and maybe lowering the action if it’s required, the actual nuts and bolts of a proper setup is usually done in the workshop although I usually take all the tools I need to cope with a major breakdown.

time You’re at a gig, go up to the band and talk guitars to them, look what happened to me at the Satellites gig. You never know where that conversation is going to take you. Classic cases of right place right time - it happens. What is the most challenging repair you have undertaken, and also the most common? That’s an easy one, it was a guy called Mark who asked me to look at a guitar he’d bought from the States that had arrived in a state of disrepair. The guitar was made by a concept company called Obstructures and it was completely made out of aluminium. The only things that weren’t aluminium were the frets and the strap buttons. He asked me to make a brass nut for it, do a partial refret and dress and a setup. I was a little apprehensive to say the least and I spent a lot of time emailing America for advice. I was exchanging notes with the guy who actually built it, this thing weighed twelve pounds! He told me in an offhand way ‘Oh yeah, just use the usual tools that you’d use on a wooden guitar’. What he didn’t tell me was that you needed the strength of ten men just to remove a fret, let alone hammer a new one in…….yes sir that was scary. Finally, what is next for the guitar repair shed and do you have any long term goals? I think that while I’m trying to build up a name for the Guitar Repair Shed I’d like to do some short educational videos or at least guitar maintenance in pictures. I’m very lucky to have served with people like Steve Winstead, Mike Campbell’s guitar tech and Jeff Ousley who’s out with Cheap trick at the moment. These guys have taught me such a lot in the early days that I can now start passing on the knowledge to people who want to try it for themselves, so watch this space.

Can you tell us about the luthiery course you did at the awesome crimson guitars in Dorchester? Ah, Ben Crowe at Crimson Guitars the man who’s given me a lot of inspiration when it comes to taking guitars apart. Ben is the sort of guy who ‘shares the knowledge’ by doing literally hundreds of Youtube videos. There’s people out there that like to keep everything to themselves for some strange reason hey, we’re all in this together guys, c’mon. Crimson have gone away from designing guitars using the three classic guitar shapes and have ended up forming a nice little niche for themselves, take a look at their website. I just went on a day course with them. There was about thirty people there of all age ranges and they covered just about all aspects of luthiery, it was definitely good for me. They now do a complete range of services from building your own guitar in the workshop to selling their own range of tools, online forums etc. Good bunch of guys. How would you reccomend getting into the business for any aspiring guitarists out there? Well that’s a tough one for anyone to answer but I’d say apart from lots of practice in the spare room, one of the simplest and most effective things to do is just talk to people. Next

DJ Format and Abdominal just can’t stay away from touring the UK! After another incredibly successful tour earlier this year, the infamous hip hop duo head out once again to showcase their very first full-length album together. ‘Still Hungry’ was released in May this year and it saw the guys play live on BBC 6 Music for Lauren Laverne. The first single from the album, ‘Behind the Scenes’ was play listed on 6Music. The duo have released several videos to accompany the album and they have clocked up over 150K plays .

Jules is no stranger to the music world, he’s released countless records, performed on every corner of the globe, had a BBC Radio 1 residency, has won dozens of awards including the number 1 DJ in the world, yet 2017 has proved to be one of his most monumental years yet. by Harry D-Tox This month for the Box Fulla Records Sub:Section in the Dorset Music Magazine we have the pleasure of chatting to Dean and Joe aka Cush-D and Preacher, promoters of iRATE & HG (Homegrown) and two of Weymouth’s longstanding DJ’s, flying the flag for D&B in the area for over a decade and a half! We talk to them about how they first got in to the scene, where they met and what their plans are for the future. First things first! Maximum respect for taking the time out to do this interview, we all know there ain’t enough hours in the day, Big up! Let’s start with what musical influences you guys had growing up and how/when you both first got in to the scene?b Dean – I have a wide taste in music, but D&B has been the one constant since my early teens. A shared passion with the friends I grew up with. I remember the days of tuning into Joe’s NRG FM pirate radio show and getting the cassette ready to record! My first rave was back in 2003, at the Sanctuary (Slammin’ Vinyl), which was an eye opening experience for a 16 year old who rarely left Weymouth, and I was instantly hooked! I rushed out to buy my first pair of turntables, and started travelling to record shops and raves across the country! My first records, or influences, were the likes of Dillinja, Fresh/BC, Roni Size & Krust, Adam F, Ed Solo, Ram Trilogy… I could go on, but these are the ones who immediately stick out. Joe – Similar to Dean, I listen to a wide selection of music with DnB being at the top of the list. I first discovered DnB when I was about 15, staying up to listen to Fabio and Grooverider’s Radio 1 show and sneaking into a small local club occasionally. My early influences would have been people like Roni Size, Micky Finn, and Hype, but my main inspiration from the first cassette I bought to this present day is the legend that is Nicky Blackmarket! He’s probably our most frequently booked headliner. You recently celebrated 15 years of HG, 10 years of iRATE and 5 years as one crew. How did you start, what venues did you use originally and can you remember who was the first headliner you booked? Joe – The move from pirate radio to DJing at club events came about in 2002 after a friend put our names forward for a local

event, headlined by Kenny Ken, at a venue known as The Kiva. A couple more events followed until the following year when the club decided to step back and let us run things, So with Micky Finn booked as our first headliner, Homegrown was born! Dean – It feels longer than 10 years! But yeah, 10 years of great memories. I was involved in local ‘free parties’ before starting up the brand, and secured the use of a local pub’s function room. A small group of friends evolved into a pub overflowing with ravers, which grabbed the attention of other venues and opened doors for us; including some memorable times at The Rave Cave, which was a converted skittle alley at the back of a well located pub. The big step up for iRATE though was in 2010. Being trusted with the biggest club in Weymouth, at the time, Banus; we booked a relatively unknown Wilkinson (Ram Records) and the legend Twisted Individual. The place was rammed all night, and iRATE was cemented into the local club scene. How did you guys meet and what made you decide to bring the two brands together? Dean – I was a regular at Joe’s early Homegrown events. But it wasn’t until I run the first event at Banus that we had to cross paths and communicate, as we now shared a venue. A number of months and events passed, working around each other, and then a drunken conversation in the smoking area led to our first event together, with Loadstar headlining. It was a great success and easy to work together, so it was inevitable that the two crews merged as one.

Although we certainly don’t always agree on ideas, it’s a formula that seems to work time after time. That’s a big chunk of time running events and bringing top D&B artists to Weymouth. In your opinion what have been some stand out events in that time and who have been your favourite headline artists to work with so far? Dean – Hmm, where do we even start? The landmark birthdays have always been good fun, one of which we got Annix, Guv & AMC all on the same line up; 3 names that have exploded since! Bringing Dillinja down for the 15th/10th bday was very special, but for me it was probably the first few iRATE events at Banus, where we had Hazard, Danny Byrd, Wilkinson & Twisted Individual all headline within a few months. That’s where a hobby became a way of life, for me.

11pm and 5am. Its mad to hear people chanting for more at 5am as the sun is making an appearance across Weymouth Beach (we have sea views from our current home, Boombox). Personally I’m still undecided on whether the late hours is a good thing, but it seems to be working for us. Finally what dates have you guys got coming up and where’s best for the readers to find out more about your movements as individual artists and a brand?

There truly is something for everyone within this scene, even some commercial hits for my mum to enjoy (shouts to my mum). Drum&Bass being number 1 in the charts, who’d have thought that? I think the crowds are more reactive too, which is great for a DJ. Although mosh pits need to do one! Joe – Drum&Bass being used for backing tracks for BBC programs? That never happened back in the day! Ha! It literally is taking over. Although I’ll always prefer mixing on vinyl, the switch to digital and the growth of the web has also made it a lot more accessible for new artists to get their work noticed, which can only be a good thing. Another big change is the opening hours. Our nights used to run from about 8pm until 2am, and would be packed from start to finish. Now people come out after 11pm, perhaps due to the late licenses, so we operate between

WILDERPEOPLE The Wilderpeople are a new Alternative Rock 5 piece outfit hailing from Bournemouth with members coming from different corners of the UK. These guys may be a new band but are certainly not new to the music scene, having been around the block and back in past projects, including Malagodi, Colt 45, Walk The Night, Neon Dawn and Hightown Parade. The Band came to be after bass player Scott’s long 3 year hiatus from performing to focus on writing new material for his next venture. During this time he set up Studio

Luca in Bournemouth, as well co-writing with several local and major artists, all while he finally began piecing together the dream team for the band that came to be The Wilderpeople. “After many changes we hit the studio and set out to make the greatest debut record we could achieve” says Scott, this led onto being contacted by several influential rock/metal bands across the U.K. for gigs including Dorje, Halfwait and Danger Kidz.

Their triumphant uplifting live shows along with their dark sense of humour has made them very popular with audiences across the region. The band have released 4 cassettes, 2 EPS, 5 Live albums and 11 studio albums since forming in 1996.

The material is a complete mixing pot of influences taking in country, folk, punk and everything else in between. What you get is infectious foot stomping racket that gets right under your skin drawing you in. From the 50’s style surf guitar on “That Murder of Crows”, to the toe tapping banjo of the fast food anthem “Going to Kentucky” and the mystic mandolin on “Tiizak Hamra”. If variety is the spice of life that Lady Winwoods Maggot are the pick n’mix of music, giving you Middle Eastern style classics like “Aphrodite in a Nightie Does the Keybab Shuffle”.
