Manchester based five piece CABBAGE were recently summed up by The Guardian as “The wonderfully disreputable Cabbage, inviting hero worship and parental disapproval…” They’ll be performing at 60 Million Postcards “serving up an idiosyncratic, satirical attack in the form of discordant neo post-punk” on the 27th October. We caught up with the band ahead of the gig in an attempt to get to know them better. First things first, Cabbage, what’s that all about? Selby and The Dharma Blitz are a eight piece Alternative, Funk, Hip Hop project that merges arresting lyricism with a unique musical direction. Fast becoming one of Dorset’s most exciting and infectious bands, we caught up with band leader Selby to talk about the how the band formed and their ambitions for the future.
The Dharma Blitz, what’s the inspiration behind that name?
Well we were looking for a name that had some contrast in it. Something that would resemble the sound, blissful but hard hitting at the same time. Dharma is a Sanskrit word which has many different meanings and spiritual associations. In Buddhist teachings it can be interpreted as “cosmic law and order”, but Dharma is also a path you choose, a right way of living. Blitz is the bombardment of this that we bring through the art of music and dance.
You mix together Funk, Hip-Hop and a host of other genres, what is the closest thing you could compare to your overall sound? I don’t think we could lock it down to certain genre, or compare
Selby has been known locally for his philosophical and clever use of words on the spoken word scene for some time, does The Dharma Blitz have any recurring lyrical themes or is it more about the music? There are definitely some reoccurring themes
in there. We have a strong lyrical focus. Many of our songs start off as poems and stand alone verses, but when we started the Dharma Blitz we wanted to create a full blown merger between the words and music, songs with big instrumental sections and catchy grooves, that didn’t compromise the content and feeling of the lyrics.
This band is relatively new in the grand scheme of things, what are your aspirations for it? We’ve got our dreams, but being
it directly to a particular act or two, but the u.k’s live underground scene is a musician in this day and age is crazy road to set out on, at the moment full of acts that bring all sorts of vibrant fusions. I am sure being a part of we have the time and resources to create original music that we love, this has inspired us to do our thing the way that we do it. all we can ask for is for this to continue, to get our art heard by as many people as possible, and for the project to fuel itself toward future prospects. Blimey, there’s eight of you. How on earth do organize practise? Sometimes it’s more difficult than others but we manage all right. Your music screams “festival” to me, what are your favourite
I bet the sound guy loves you, is your soundcheck a nightmare and have you ever failed to all fit on a stage? Soundcheck is always hard with big projects, especially when you’re starting out and doing lots of support gigs, but we always get there in the end, or just get on with it at least. We’ve definitely had some tight squeezes on stage but we get on enough to cozy up together.

We’ve had the pleasure of playing some of the country’s best. Boomtown Fair and Shambala were crazy fun this summer. If people are looking for a good local festival “On the Bus” has great music, good people and friendly vibes. One to check out for sure.

make our music thought provoking and get you moving like a nutter all at the same time. It goes off down at Cellar bar so come and have a laugh in a welcoming joint with some good people.
I imagine you see a fair few local acts with your gigging schedule, who are some of your favourite south coast bands we need to hear? Laura Goucher and “Banquet of Sound” are
awesome, “Kaia Vieira” and her band are not to be missed, “Afro Tallawah” have great vibes and a sick sound. I’ve probably missed loads,there’s plenty out there.

“They were going nuts until they realised it was the sound man” Hurrying out of the light drizzle of the Bournemouth town centre and into the bustling The Moon In The Square, George Fullerton gingerly takes a swig from his Magners. Taking a break from his promoter duties, he has just finished a band practice with Willowen, but takes a moment to discuss a few things about Lifeboat Promotions where he has been carving a name for himself in the Bournemouth music scene. Hello George! Before we get started, can you give us a backstory into how you got into promoting? It kinda happened without planning it! One day I looked at gig listings in Bournemouth, but it only really seemed like the top end was on offer at that time. The smaller touring bands didn’t really have a way of playing in Bournemouth, and in particular some friends of mine in Midday Committee from Portsmouth had never played Bournemouth and I wanted them to so I thought why don’t I just do it? So I messaged Sully at The Anvil asking if I could do the show and he sorted me out hire and a sound guy, and that’s how Lifeboat Promotions was born – just wanting to put on a mates band. You do a lot of shows at Blueline in particular, what is so special about that venue? It’s this whole thing about DIY music, I watched a documentary the other day about whether DIY is sustainable and about making it happen beyond the promoter’s traditional duties. For a lot of my shows, I go and pick the singer/songwriter up, have them around my house, cook them breakfast. Rather than just put them on, I’d befriend them and it just means that regardless of how the show turns out, everyone is in good spirits. That’s why I use Blueline because it’s essentially just a space with a PA, no real rules, and so you get a genuine raw atmosphere as a result.
And on the other side of the coin, what’s one thing you dislike? The fact some people just aren’t educated on what it’s like being a promoter or in a band. There’s lots of things, if they turn up and don’t have the right equipment, or if they turn up and leave after their set – promoters all over the world would say this. What’s your favourite show you’ve put on? There’s probably two that come to mind; Katie Malco: It was so intimate, 20 to 30 people sat down in a rehearsal room, her voice alone was just so crazy. You’re amazed it’s live because it’s so good. The other one when we put on Space Blood from Chicago recently. We were really sweating because it was an expensive show on a Wednesday night, but we went ahead with it. We had people coming down not because they were friends of the support bands, but that they were genuine math rock fans. The fact that word got out and made it viable was weird. That was the best because it made me have faith in Bournemouth. What is your funniest memory as a promoter? One of the first shows I did was with a band called Junior in Cardiff. During one of their last songs, the sound guy for the night was crowd surfing. They looked a bit confused and usually they would be absolutely going nuts but when they realised it was the sound guy, they were thinking oh god what if something goes wrong. That was a pretty cool moment, I’ve got a picture of it somewhere…
So what tips or advice would you give to someone considering entering promotion? Be realistic, the way to do it is start small. Obviously if it’s a clever booking and more or less guaranteed to sell out, like Moose Blood, then you can do that but if it backfires you’re gunna be scared. The Southampton has been known for its DIY culture in only problem with e-mailing those types of recent times, is that something you’re trying to emulate? booking agents is that you won’t get replies Yeah, [I admire] people like Kate Coulson and Ricky Bates if you have no history, there are certain on a Joiners level, and also 1985 and all the house shows lower level bands that will charge there. Actually, the reason I like Blueline is because it’s much less, so start there. similar to a DIY venue in Nottingham – no bigger than an average living room area. It’s a bring your own booze, Don’t do it for money, there’s house party atmosphere and they do really well. no money in promoting unless What’s one thing you love about being a promoter? At the end of the day, I put on bands I want to see and that I think other people would want to see. I hope that people see that I am in the room when the bands are playing, that I’m watching every band and I don’t book a band just because they say they’ll sell 40 tickets.

Farewell tour show promises chaos in a tiny room
Dead Harts were last in Bournemouth as support for Beartooth when they tore The Anvil a new one in 2015 and their spiky punk flavour went down a treat before one of the most memorable shows in Dorset that year. This show, on their farewell tour, signals a string of goodbye shows for a truly talented band. To quote them, this Blue Line show will ‘guarantee carnage’ in a room big enough for just 40 people to attend.

Towns and cities up and down the country will be putting on music stages to raise money for Oxfam. With Bournemouth playing its part, the Boscombe Cellar Bar is offering an acoustic and main stage across the all-dayer. Kicking off the acoustic stage is Daisie Ukeladies followed by Monkeys Uncle, Shannon White, Chris Collins, Nick Hayward-Young, Oceanside UK, Mikey Ball and then rounded off by Soulcreek. www.rock-regeneration.co.uk It’s October which is the month on the calendar for the crazy live music day which is the Bournemouth Oxjam Takeover. An event that Bournemouth has always embraced and supported whole-heartedly. The live music community around here have again been very generous with their time and we have four venues all hosting fantastic line ups of handpicked local live acts. At The Anvil Rock Regeneration’s Punk correspondent Ross Ferrone has put together a mouthwatering line up of bands which include The Crash Landings who have just released their top rated debut album “All Guts No Glory”. At 60 Million Postcards local label The Burrow have a host of eclectic bands include the last ever performance for local festival favourites Disco’s Out (Murders In). The Winchester is hosting a rock night which includes the might “Sirpico” as well as hotly tipped newcomers “The Kung Fu Chicken Fighters”. I myself will be at Chaplin’s running a full acoustic line up in the afternoon from 2pm with an evening topped off by a rare performance Ska/Punk legends The Sporadics.
