With Festival season firmly in the rear view mirror the weather may be cooling down but the club and venue scene is just getting warmed up. With the arrival of the new students to Bournemouth, The Old Firestation has put together a really strong line up of gigs, we have a gander at their official warm to the Arts By The Sea; Glitter Not Litter, as well as Marmozets at their sister venue, the o2 Academy. Elsewhere we preview the Oxjam takeover, which will be hosting some of the area’s best musicians in a massive multi venue takeover, as well as taking an in depth look at the Eric Gales show at Mr Kyps. Also in the issue, Rock Regenerations Chinners reviews Death By Shotgun’s new EP, D-Tox keeps us up to date in the world of drum’n’bass, plus all the usual previews and gig listings.

Local promoters We Broke Free and Ding Dong are kicking off the revered Arts By The Sea festival this month, with the official opening party, Glitter Not Litter, hitting The Old Fire Station on the 14th October. Now in its 7th year, the publicly funded Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival is delivered annually by Arts Bournemouth, and works in collaboration with many partners, both locally and nationally. Their aim is to encourage a greater awareness of, and participation in, outstanding and engaging arts across different media and art forms through a famously diverse line up of acts and performers from intimate theatre shows through to illuminated installations, live music and large scale outdoor spectaculars, many of which are free to the public. Glitter Not Litter takes over both rooms of The Old Firestation, the main room features Live Music from The Brass Funkeys, The Bomo Swing, an MC/DJ set from Lazy Habits, and DJs Mike Dyson, FRAU, Adam Fox and Space Cakes, while room 2 is being hosted by The Night Garden, a local collective who transform venues in into magical and imaginative spaces. Also throughout the evening the event will feature Drag Go Go Dancers, a biodegradable glitter station, recycled fashion show, decor and fancy dress theme artwork and loads more. Heres our take on some of this awesome line up

Lazy Habits Sound System - We at Dorset Music had the pleasure of seeing Lazy Habits a few years ago at On The Bus Festival and they were easily the band of the weekend playing their super tight brand of brass - hip hop fusion. Known for their slick lyrics about modern British culture and urban life, the stripped down MC and soundsystem set seems like the perfect showcase! The Brass Funkeys - Drawing from the traditions of New Orleans marching bands The Funkey Monkey’s fuse reggae, hip hop, gypsy, swing and Latin to create an eclectic live show of ‘soulful jazz funeral marches and brass driven funk.’ Bomo Swing - Coming from the

ashes of local legends Pachango, these guys deliver a manic fusion of Reggae, Balkan and Swing that has quickly cemented them as one of the best party bands on the south coast.

Frau DJs - All-girl party collective,Frau DJs are a dynamic group of empowered females, throwing events together across the UK since early 2011. A Frau party is one of the most inclusive nights around, and always include copious amounts of glitter, dancing and just the right amount of cheese.

If you’re sad that the festival season has come to end, worry not! You can look forward to the Oxjam Festival coming up this Autumn - with not one, but two fantastic all-day music performances to look out for this year! Oxjam started in 2006, and since then over 1.2 million people having attended an Oxjam event nationally, raising over £2.3 million for Oxfam! Year on year this national music event has saved lives across the world, helping Oxfam to provide clean water, sanitation and emergency response to around 25countries across the globe at any one time. 83p of every £1 given to Oxfam goes directly to helping to helping save lives.

Following the release of his incredible new album ‘Middle of the Road’, guitar whirlwind Eric Gales will be returning to the UK for an 8 date tour in May, calling in at Mr Kyps in Poole. Itching to get back on the road and over to Europe Eric adds; “I am finally happy to announce the upcoming UK tour coming the end of May through June. Wow are we excited to be touring in the UK.”

“one of the greatest guitarists on the planet” “This is gonna be amazing. Get ready over there because we’re coming!” His latest album Middle of the Road was released on 24 February and received rave reviews from Classic Rock, Powerplay, Fireworks, Blues Matters, Blues in Britain, Total Guitar, Guitar & Bass and Guitarist magazine amongst others and was called “scorching”, “rocket-fuelled” and he was declared as “one of the greatest guitarists on the planet” not to mention counting fans in the shape of Dave Navarro, Carlos Santana, Mark Tremonti and Joe Bonamassa. It’s well documented that Gales was a child prodigy and heralded as the second coming of Jimi Hendrix when he released

ERIC GALES American blues-rock 29th october, mr kyps

his debut album The Eric Gales Band in 1991 as a 16 year old on Elektra Records. It was the first of 10 albums on a major label and the start of a blistering career. He has released 14 studio albums in total ahead of Middle of the Road and a host of other collaborations, one of which led him to work with producer Fabrizio Grossi (Alice Cooper, Joe Bonamassa, Billy F. Gibbons, Ice T, Leslie West, Slash, Walter Trout, Steve Lukather, Steve Vai, Paul Stanley, Supersonic Blues Machine). In 2009 he spent time in the Shelby County Correction Center for possession of drugs and a weapon. Elaborating he adds; “While I was in there all the officers and guards were like, ‘bro you know this isn’t where you’re supposed to be. When you get out of here, go take the world by the horns and ride it all the way out.’ It took a couple of years after but, I’m here.” Whilst he was incarcerated he was able to play shows, for the Mayor, the city and festivals, his own version of Johnny Cash Walk the Line. Middle of the Road has seen Eric Gales reborn and this upcoming tour is going to be an unmissable opportunity to see one of the greatest guitarist in the world up close and personal.

After some time away working on new material, MARMOZETS’ incendiary live show is back on the road. With their current warm up dates entirely sold-out in advance, the band can now announce details of a headline tour that commences in October. The tour – scheduled below – comes as MARMOZETS prepare to launch their eagerly anticipated second album which has been produced by Gil Norton (Foo Fighters, Pixies). The album follows their 2014 debut ‘The Weird and Wonderful Marmozets’ which

earned them Kerrang!’s coveted Album Of The Year award as they became the hottest new band on the Brit alt-rock scene.

momentum gains traction. “We’re all in a really good place and we’re totally ready for what’s to come.”

Further acclaim for the album came from The Guardian (“Songs flit around from riff to riff, as if Marmozets were bursting to fill each song with ideas”) and Q (“A very impressive, ambitious debut”), while Noisey highlighted vocalist Becca Macintyre as someone who “could be instrumental in a big change for British rock… Becca is challenging British rock and setting a high bar for other bands because she’s just an amazing fronthuman.”

Vocalist Becca Macintyre said of their new material: “The sound we have so far is incredible. It’s still very much Marmozets and when you listen to it, it sounds like we’ve all recorded it in the same room.

“Everyone’s so excited to get back on the road, we really can’t wait,” says guitarist Jack Bottomley as the band’s

“That’s exactly how it should be. It transmits the energy that we have when we play live.”

THE SUB:SECTION

drum&bass | jungle | bassline

by Harry D-Tox For this instalment of the Box Fulla Records Sub:Section, as well as bringing you the Jungle and Drum’n’Bass listings for Dorset, we’re very pleased to announce that the big bad and heavily influential Playaz is coming to Halo in Bournemouth town on the 3rd November! Playaz Recordings, otherwise known as Real Playaz and formally known as True Playaz (before DJ Zinc’s amicable departure) is one of the scenes defining brands, consistently moving with the times and last year celebrating its 20th anniversary. Responsible for massive dancefloor anthems from DJ Zinc’s Super Sharp Shooter, Reach Out, Ska and the crossover tune 138 Trek, to DJ Hazard’s Mr Happy, Machete, Time Tripping and Bricks Don’t Roll, to name just two artists and a few of their notable releases. Apart from head honchos DJ Hype and Pascal, the Playaz roster also consists of (in alphabetical order) Annix, BassBrothers, Decimal Bass, DJ Hazard, Heist, Jam Thieves, Jaydan, Konichi, Lynx, NC-17, Optiv & BTK, Original Sin, Placid, Protential Badboy, Prolix, Sub Zero, Taxman, The Voss and Tyke. Unleashing more bangers than a Guy Fawkes night and a steady flow of breakthrough talent, the Playaz camp has also run regular events at the internationally renowned Fabric for over 15 years. In a recent interview with Marko Kutlesa for Skiddle, DJ Hype was quoted saying “I’m old, but I’m not old school. I never do old school sets. I like the new stuff. I can listen to old stuff and I don’t mind playing some of it on the radio, but when I play out I’ve

never really played it. I say to people that I played those tunes when they were dubplates, I don’t play them when they’re old and worn out.” This is clearly one of the reasons why Playaz has continued to keep fresh and cutting edge. Performing at Halo on the 3rd November for the Playaz night will be: DJ Hype, Sub Zero, Taxman, Tyke and local badmans Ultrah, with MCs Funsta, IC3, Magika, Felon and Hustle. Support from Operate and Newton.

Absolute Music moved into the 24,000-square foot music superstore and studios complex in 2012 with dedicated showrooms across two floors for guitars, amps and effects; DJ & live sound; synths & keyboards; hi-tech and drums. There’s also an in-house Guitar Workshop, gear hire department, a climate-controlled acoustic guitar room, four guitar booths, two soundproofed drum booths, Support & Service Centre, plus space and staging to hold regular workshops and events. The on-site recording and rehearsal studios are always in high demand with local musicians, not to mention the attached café, serving hot and cold food and drink to visitors 7 days a week. Absolute Music’s store and studios has become the place to try and buy music gear, as well as record, rehearse, play, learn and chat about music!

The EP was recorded in conjunction with the Southampton record label Suicide Notes with George Daly engineering and producing it at the Ranch Production House in Southampton. The ep kicks off with “Forget About It” and the band show from the start they can produce sweet melodies and catchy lyrics. They combine electric and acoustic guitars to great effect with some well delivered

vocals. The second track entitled “Hate My Brain” is a fast paced earworm that grows on your more with each listen. “New Year’s Eve” is a tune of anticipation and also looks back at the past year. It features some cleverly put together festive chiming style guitar parts. “Surf’s Up” is possibly the best of this collection, an uplifting 3 minutes or so that features more great melodic guitars with some spot on foot tapping rhythms. For the last track “Repeat” things slowed down with a simple but effective acoustic number taking things back to the band’s original beginnings. It is clear that they can write decent relevant tunes and they have a good understanding of the music creation process. It’s a promising start for this new band who show here that they have plenty of potential.
