Local promoters WE BROKE FREE have been putting on great parties for a fair while now , with some great shows announced over several venues in the coming months, we catch up with leading lady Tor Byrnes ahead to find out what’s cracking. How would you describe a a WBF event? We focus on live music from across the globe to headline our events usually, and then support the Bournemouth music scene by adding local support that fit with the headliners genre. We then finish the nights generally with a DJ set, where we can showcase all our new findings and what we have coming up! How do you go about selecting your acts? By listening to them! We search the internet, go to live shows, and spend most of the summer in fields at festivals scouring for new exciting acts! We also get offered bands when they’re touring as we have a great relationship with lots of booking agents now. What has been the highlight of doing these events so far? A highlight is always when you see a band and know that they deserve to do well then watch them work their way up the music industry. Currently, the number 1 album in

the charts is held by The Blossoms, who played for WBF in February 2015! They really work hard and are lovely lads so deserve it, plus they’ve got some lovely indie pop tunes. Being so involved with the local music scene you’ve worked with a fair few acts, who are favourite local bands and why? The music scene in the area, is really starting to put itself on the map again, with other great promoters too! WBF are massive fans of quite a few local bands, particularly Coosbay, Jawbone, Powdered Cows, Poor Michael, The Deltorers and Howland. Who is the ‘biggest’ band you have booked? For 60 Million Postcards 10th Birthday we booked Mystery Jets, that was huge, to have such a massive band in such a small space! Putting on shows has it fair share of ups and downs, what has been your biggest frustration with it to date? Honestly, the Bournemouth music scene can be frustrating. We put on a lot of FREE shows and people need to trust us that we are putting on quality acts and to come experience something new! People need to BREAK FREE! What advice would give to yourself (if you could) when you were first starting to put on events? Don’t get upset when people don’t come to shows. In the end, they are the ones who missed out, and all I can do is offer them the opportunity

AUGUST DORSET DORSET MUSIC MUSIC || SEPTEMBER

and guarantee an exceptional show week in, week out! When you’re not at your own events where do you like to go out for drinks/music/food? Locally? Drinks, The Brewhouse in Southbourne or Cellar Bar for a chilled pint, or The Four Horsemen. Cocktails, it’s gotta be Smokin’ Aces. Food - Coriander is very much up there, with The Nippon Inn, and special occasions The Larderhouse. Music wise, locally The Winchester is a brilliant venue and Canvas are also doing some pretty exciting things. We are excited to be putting more and more shows into the Old Fire Station too so keep a look out. Any one you have our eye on as the next big thing? We’ve got Plastic Mermaids playing at The Old Fire Station in October, we saw them last year at Bestival, and are honestly one of the best live acts i’ve ever seen. I’ve been trying to get them to Bournemouth since then so it’s going to be a very special show! Also watch out for The Magic Gang and The Big Moon. Whats next for WBF? We are doing a lot of shows this year. Our aim is to put Bournemouth on the map for live music. A lot of bands miss the area, but we want to get those bands playing here. Get rid of that ‘sleepy seaside town’ rep! We Broke Free, you can too!

BATTLE of This autumn The Winchester will be hosting a mammoth battle of the bands.

THE bands

A host of local acts will duke it out at the prestigious venue for the right to be called Bournemouth’s best! Also up for grabs for the winner is a £750 music video, A studio recording session at ABSOLUTE MUSIC and a feature in DORSET MUSIC MAGAZINE later in the year. We highlight some of our personal favourites in anticipation of the contest. Jack Grace - When watching Jack Grace either as a solo act, or in his band, you can’t help but be fixated by his intense stage presence and stunningly powerful voice. A master of loop pedals his songs flit between atmospheric acoustic and heavy rock riffs. Kung Fu Chicken Fighters - Having seen these guys a few times they always impress and seem to get better each time. Their Rage Against The Machineesque sound makes for a live show that is packed with energy, and they are sure to have the crowd bouncing around in no time.

Soulhole - My first impression of seeing these guys live was how unbelievably tight they were. Mixing funk-rock with a hint of blues, the energy doesn’t stop and theirs sets fly through at breakneck speed, leaving the the crowd gagging for more. Choppers Children - This acoustic duo have been gigging relentlessly over the summer and all the practise has honed their retro tinged acoustic sound to a fine point. Normally they play a mix of covers and original material, so it will be interesting to see their set list in a competition environment. Bonsai Pirates - A band who need no introduction, forming all the way back at the start of the decade they are a sight to behold live, mixing folk music with rum, pirates and a good time. Yui Karlberg - An ace face of the local open mic scene, Yui is rarely seen without her guitar, be it in venues, pubs, or busking, she definitely has the edge on gig experience in the competition, and that mixed with her heartfelt songwriting style will take her far. Brothers Grimmer - Another local band who have been gigging a fair while, and it shows on stage with their tight performance and relaxed stage presence. Mixing hard rock with a psychedelic influence its easy to get lost in the music of this talented act.

a transcendent dance through pop music history

DJ Tom Loud hails from Sydney, Australia and for the 2011 Sydney Fringe Festival he created a show which has lead him on a journey around the globe, The Hot Dub Time Machine.

Hot Dub Time Machine is the World’s First Time Travelling Dance Party, taking festivals, theatres, rooftops and venues all over the world on an transcendent dance through pop music history! Adding to the HDTM action and movement is Loud’s wife, who goes by the name Lulu Loud, who brings commentary to proceedings. She is the show’s hostess, Loud says. “She guides the journey and appears on screen,” he says. There’s a video component, sometimes using the original music video for the song or, in the case of the earlier material, using stock footage relevant to the period and/or the music.

Starting with Bill Haley’s 1954 classic, Rock Around The Clock, this show takes you on dance friendly hop from Haley-era pop and rock through every decade, right up to today. Songs are played in “strict” chronological order from with enormous mashed visuals all scratched live from vinyl turntables. Loud, who lives with his wife and two young children, had aspirations as a musician before DJing took over 14 years ago. “I was a very bad drummer,” he says. “I needed to practise more. Then in 2000 I got into raving and thought that was fantastic. I was always intrigued by what DJs were doing, so I bought my first turntables in 2002. Then I started DJing in bars and at house parties.” Since its debut in, Hot Dub has broken dance floors at sold-out shows all over the globe along with headline main stage slots at some of the biggest festivals. Hot Dub is all about singing, dancing and having the best, party, EVER!

BEHIND THE SCENE

With Richard Bottom From Absolute Music

“If you put the work in, you’ll see the results. It won’t be handed to you on a plate!” Absolute Music has long been the go-to place for local musicians to restock, reherse and with the move to their new center and addition of a cafe, to relax. We had a sit down with Absolute’s Richard Bottom to dig deeper. What was the vision for Absolute music when the business was conceptualised ? To offer the best mail order experience and give the best advice to our customers, specialising in hi-tech equipment.

How has that vision changed over time?

Adding to the mail order side of the business and expanding product ranges. The desire was to become a hub for local musicians that offered everything under one roof, from the store, to rehearsal rooms, tuition, studios and cafe.

How did the move from the old unit come about and was it always the plan?

Bournemouth and Poole College had music teaching facilities at Knighton Heath, which is where our warehouse was located. When they moved out we saw an opportunity to make use of their classrooms (now our rehearsal rooms and studios), and take on all three units so everything worked together with easier logistics and better infrastructure.

Do the different departments integrate well or is there a friendly rivalry?

environment. The cafe serves great food, and is great for mums, dads, wives (or even husbands) wanting to relax while waiting for a lesson to finish, or finish shopping. It’s also ideal for bands rehearsing in the evenings to take an ear break.

You guys alluded to a big announcement last time I was in, can you spill the beans (or at least some of them)? Yes, we can! We have taken over BAMM - Bournemouth Academy of Modern Music and will be running B-Tech courses from Absolute Music for instrumental performance and music production starting in September.

What advice would you give to a new band starting the live circuit on the South coast?

Get practicing, get out there, be nice, and grow your fanbase. If you put the work in, you’ll see the results. It won’t be handed to you on a plate!

Some of your workshops look awesome, what is your personal highlight running these?

Andy Timmons guitar clinic was brilliant - he’s a great ‘feel’ player. As a guitarist that’s been my favourite, but there have been many good drum clinics too, including the legendary Dave Weckl

Absolute truely is a world of wonders for musicians, what’s the quirkiest/weirdest product you’ve encountered in your time there?

Probably the Neumann KU-100 Dummy Head. It’s a rubber head with microphones inside the ears. It’s used for ‘binaural recording’ - which is a way to record that sounds incredibly natural when listening on Running the studios you must see the best (and headphones.

We all help each other out where we can, and there’s not too much departmental rivalry. Probably more so within each department, however!

worst) local talent, who are your favourite local What’s the most common song played by bands? people testing new guitars?

There’s loads.. The Other Guys, Attack on Mars, Thin Wire Fence, Endea, Dukebox Three, Southern Brotherhood to name just a few.

The cafe seems like a hub of knowledge and local musos, tell us about that side of the business

The cafe seems like a hub of knowledge and local musos, tell us about that side of the business It was always our goal to provide a space where musicians can go, not just to the store, but a more social

We haven’t banned Stairway to Heaven or Smoke on the Water, but I think people know not to play those these days just in case they get ridiculed! Classic blues licks probably permeate the shop more than anything else.

www.rock-regeneration.co.uk This area has not had a true music contest since the Dorset Music Awards in 2012. A brand new event hosted by Aaron Lowney of “Skirmish Presents” is being hosted by The Winchester Pub in Bournemouth. The event is designed to give a massive shot in the arm for the local music scene with an aim to find a balance between getting exposure and being paid with exposure, which to Aaron seems more like exploitation. The artists have been selected, which includes solos, duos and bands with a great mix of genres. Skirmish Presents has previously hosted a series of events geared around all things battle! ...dance-offs, comedy battles, rap and poetry slams, and now battle of the bands! The main aim is to give all the bands that enter much needed exposure and the eventual winners with get a music video made worth £750. September’s events take place on the following dates: 1st September: Round 1 - Heat 3 Featuring: Jack Grace, Harpin’ On, Sirpico and The Underdogs 8th September: Round 1- Heat 4 Featuring: Yui Karlberg, Brothers Grimmer, Bonsai Pirates and Matt JR Hurley 15th September: Round 1- Heat 5 Featuring: Soulhole, Matthew Jure and James Seaward
