Where’s the weirdest place that inspiration for a song has struck? Probably an aeroplane toilet!!! Because there’s absolutely nothing you can do in flight it’s an amazing time to get creative! Maybe not in the toilet though! Ha! What album/song are you ashamed to admit you secretly love? It has to be Lionel Richie!! I think he’s everyone’s secret!? If you were a fly on the wall, who would you spy on? I’d love to be in Motorheads dressing room just to see if Lemmy really does drink that much Jack Daniels!! What’s your favourite ice cream flavour? Chocolate chip for sure!! What’s your favourite song to play live? I really enjoy Renegade as it’s probably the most personal song on the album. Who would you rather tour with: One Direction, Lady Gaga or Cher? Cher every time! Plus I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for her after seeing her on that war ship as a teenager!!! If you could be a superhero which one would you be and why? Superman! Flying, running at lightning speed and X-ray vision!! What more do you need?! Would you rather fight an elephant sized spider or a 1000 spider sized elephants? 1000 spider sized elephants!! I hate spiders and love elephants! What’s the worst thing about being on tour? Driving the van!! How many motorbikes do you own and which is your favourite? I only own my 2007 championship winning Honda Fireblade so that has to be the one! If you had to cover one of Katie’s (Melua - James’ wife) songs, which one would it be? Spiders Web definitely! It’s an amazing song! Why should we check out your show? A lot of the feedback we get at our live shows is how obvious it is to see we all love what we do and it means a lot to us on stage.

The 14th century grade I listed medieval warehouse has been a merchant store, a 19th century jail for Napoleonic prisoners of war, an engineering company, a maritime museum, an arts centre and now it’s been reinvented as a micro-brewery and pub by the Dancing Man Brewery, the team behind The Platform Tavern.

After three years of planning and a run in with fans of the previous incarnation, a community arts centre, the historic Town Quay building reopened it’s doors as a micro-brewery and pub/kitchen last month. The Dancing Man Brewery plans to operate The Wool House as a community space as well as a pub. The site will also host a Tourist Information Centre as well as plenty of seating to enjoy craft beers from round the world and even some brewed right on site. The interior looks absolutely stunning, we can’t wait to get down there to sample some ales.

FEATURE Singer songwriter Lucy Spraggan is probably best known for her appearances on TV talent show X Factor in 2012, not only for unusually performing one of her own songs ‘Last Night’ from her debut self released album ‘Top Room at the Zoo’, during her audition, but also for her untimely departure part through the live TV programs due to illness. Prior to this she was arguably already an emerging star, following her success in the Live & Unsigned national competition in 2011, gaining her a huge online following, mass views on her Youtube videos and with her debut album crashing into the album charts at a number 22 slot. In 2013 Lucy released her second studio album ‘Join the Club’ through Columbia Records, to much critical acclaim and achieving her a top 10 album place. In a mere matter of weeks Lucy’s third album ‘ We Are...’ will be hitting the shelves, with her heading out across the UK shortly after in May. We jumped at the chance to have a chat with her to find out more about the new release and to find out more about what makes her tick. At what age did you know you could sing? Everybody’s been singing since they were three but yeah, I wrote my first song when I was 12, and it wasn’t very good but I did my first gig around that time. So around 10 or 12 I reckon. You won Live & Unsigned in 2011... Well I came second, which is kind of a win.

It’s always the runners up who do better though, right...? Well yeah, so I’ve heard.
If you could choose any job in the whole world that’s not singing and not something you’ve already done what would it be? I’d be a police officer, or a professional fisherwoman. I love fishing!
You already were a fairly successful artist at this point. We hate to say ‘Youtube’ successful, but you know what we mean. What made you decide to enter X Factor in 2012? I took my cds to record labels, and they’d say ‘oh we love the songs but’, there was always a but whether it was ‘you need to change your image’ or something else, and I just thought ‘you know what I’m just going to try and get on one of these shows and play a song, and hopefully people like it.’ I didn’t even think I’d get through the first bit, I just thought I might get a couple more likes on my Facebook page. I think everything happens for a reason. I’m not sure if I would do it again but I don’t regret it. That would have been one of our questions...whether you would do things differently now you know what the process is? I imagine so, mainly because it’s mental. I don’t enjoy the celebrity side of things as I’d rather just play music. I wouldn’t do it again, but I don’t regret it. I don’t really regret anything because there’s no point. What one fact about yourself that people don’t know can you tell us? That people don’t know...? I tell everyone everything - I have no secrets, but...my favourite food is frogs legs. I don’t really tell anyone that in case they think it’s odd. And I’m accident prone, but everyone knows that. I nearly lost my eye in a wildebeest incident. I bought a stuffed wildebeest head and put it into the back of my car, and I forget it had 2 foot horns when I was getting it back out and jabbed myself in the eye. A bleeding eye is a symptom of Ebola so when I went to the hospital I had to say ‘guys I do not have Ebola, I hurt myself on a wildebeest’. Haha! You’ve done loads of different jobs [trainee fire fighter, apprentice plumber, a cave tour guide] and they’re all soo different... I didn’t really have many friends when I was little so I got a magic set instead of having a mate. I got picked up by Rolls Royce doing all their corporate events and meetings. I was 12/13. I had this thing called ‘Lucy’s Magic’. I got

Your new album is out on the 27th April, what can your fans expect from it? The album is just like a diary of the last 2 years. There’s a bit of traditional me in there but also some new stuff and a lot more singy material...sonically more pleasing I think. It took ages to write but I think it’s important to really mean what you sing. It took a while to get my feelings into it. Have you ever done any collaborations, and who would you like to do one with? I’ve done a few colabs...one with Joel Baker, and I wrote some stuff with David Sneddon, and there’s a song with Boy George on my new album. That’s something else you might not know about me, but that’s my claim to fame. He’s lovely! We didn’t really know what we were going for but it turned out really good. It’s a song about when you meet someone who’s really into you but you don’t really give a shit about them. It’s a bit of a Tinder-esque song. You’re touring the UK in May - silly question but are you looking forward to it? Got anything unusual happening? Yeah it’s the thing that I’m about. I love it. I don’t think there’s anything I can tell to possibly describe how I feel about it. Playing to an audience is something I’m really passionate about. There’s going to be some new material and some old material, and hopefully people will enjoy it. We’ve yet to decide or release details but we’ve got some special guest vocalists coming for the shows, and I have a new drummer so everyone can welcome him. WORDS: MARIANNE HARRIS

Milton Jones, the king of the one-liner and Mock the Week regular, is back. His new tour ‘The Temple of Daft’ will take him to some of the country’s bestknown venues including our very own O2 Guildhall but, in comedy terms, he’s embarking on uncharted territory. That’s because joke machine Milton, the man who can cram in up to 250 gags a night, is now a joke machine with a purpose. His new tour strings the quips together in to a broader story, one that sees Jones take on the mantle of Indiana Jones, don the hat and set off on a madcap journey in to surrealist comedy. We caught up with Milton to talk about big hair, bad shirts, Mock the Week and his new direction… Your new tour is called The Temple of Daft. Why? Basically, previous tours have been lots of jokes in different forms, but basically lots of jokes. This is more of a story, more like one of my radio shows. It loosely, and I say loosely, follows a kind of adventure-archaeology type story. It started off with me noticing that I had the same surname as Indiana Jones, and it has all transpired from there. Do you wear a hat? Do you have a whip? I do wear a hat at one point, not for the whole thing, ‘cause then people would never see my hair. You talk about using a narrative style, and you say this is a bit of a departure. What brought that on? Two things. When people see you on telly, they want to come and see the same sort of thing when they see a live show, but obviously not the same jokes. Moving to a narrative was a way of keeping the same style. It begins to mine other areas of jokes as well, in terms of, if you can do a scene where you’re talking between two people - even though I’m the only person there - that’s a different sort of writing than just one-liner after one-liner. How do you prepare for a tour? After this tour begins, anything I write will go in to the next tour. I’m amassing jokes from the moment my last tour begins, and then once it finishes, I begin to go to little out of the way places to test them. Generally speaking, the further you travel, the more pleased they are to see you. I will go with bits of

paper and ideas, and it will be throwing mud against a wall and seeing what sticks. Eventually I’ll accrue enough material to do try-outs nearer home. So, it’s a trial and error process from the beginning of that. Years ago I started as an actor, and I’d quite like to incorporate more of it. For instance, previously the footprint of the tour has been I’ve gone on and done 15 minutes as a character, and then there’s a support act, and then I do the whole second half. There’s a different character this tour. Previously, I’ve done my granddad, but this will be a different relative. Who? This is my uncle, my great-uncle, Sir Randolph Digby Jones. He’s an explorer, I quite like warming the audience up with an obscure character to begin with, then making it more of a show. Your schedule is preposterous. How do you remain sane? Is there a Milton Jones signature workout regime? Well, it is difficult, and there are some weeks, or some months, where you’re away from home quite a lot, and maybe it’s the winter and maybe you’re up north and it’s quite grim all round… But it’s actually harder to write a tour, creatively, you know, that’s where the brain ache is. Once you’ve got a show that’s up and running, it’s more a physical battle. I try and see as many people around the country as I can, friends and relatives. Because there’s nothing worse than talking to hundreds of people, and then being the last person out of the car park, go to a hotel, and then the next time you talk to someone properly is when you talk to hundreds of people the next night. That’s a recipe for madness. What do you do to reenergise? Me and some other comedians get together - I did it yesterday - and play football. We like it because we see each other, but also it’s one way of turning your head off, to become completely involved in something else. Isn’t that football match full of people trying to outwit each other? Well, to be fair, there are about five different running commentaries. A lot of your comedy is quite word based - can you just come up with it? No. It’s all about writing as much as you can, and then taking the top 10%. There’s lots of stuff I’ve discarded. The new show

will have between 200 and 250 jokes, probably, but that doesn’t mean that’s all I’ve written; I’ve written another 100 that I’ve put in the bin, at least another 100, probably, maybe three times as much, and that’s the hard work. Even after all this time, I’m thinking I have just written the best joke ever, and I go and do it and it just doesn’t work - however, the thing I improvise off the back of it does work. But, I wouldn’t have got to that place had I not tried the first one. Do you have books and books of jokes that you might return to? Do ‘the Jones files’ exist in a filing cabinet somewhere? Never throw anything away, is my motto, in that if you thought there was a seed of something that was funny, keep it on file. Especially one-liners because one syllable, one word, changing the picture in people’s heads, can suddenly make something work that didn’t before. Has being known as the king of the one-liner ever been an encumbrance at all? Yeah I mean, in a way, I’ve got to be grateful... people want to put you in a box, so that originally it’s people who are booking gigs; they want to know what type of comedian you are to fit on a bill. And I think that’s true of television as well, to some extent. On Mock the Week, I sit in the one-liner chair, and if it’s not me, it’s Stewart Francis or Gary Delaney - you know, it’s the ‘odd’ bloke, so that has gone in my favour. I’m sort of grateful for where it’s got me, but if I go for an audition for another show, albeit a sitcom or something, it’s quite often as the crazy neighbour. You think well, I’m glad I’ve got this audition, but it’d be nice not to have to do that role forever. So, I suppose this show is me trying to move things on.
Well, I did use to use wax, but actually under TV lights that’s not so good – it wilts, because it’s hot, and that’s not good. So now I use something called Backcomb Dust, which is actually far drier and keeps your hair higher for longer. Sounds like an advert. It does a bit, doesn’t it? I’m not sure I’m the image the company would want, necessarily, but it’d be nice to get some kind of sponsorship where I get free stuff. I usually say, the higher the hair, the thicker the crowd. Hopefully, on my tour, I won’t have to have it too high. And finally, we have to ask - where do you get your shirts from? Usually retro shops around about. It’s tricky with shirts because people think, ‘Oh zany shirt!’ but actually the zaniest of shirts is too much. What I like are shirts that people go, ‘Oh that looks… hang on, is that good or bad?’ It needs to be quite subtle, in a way, and I’ve got 100s of them. But yes, they are usually from Oxfam or retro shops where the old lady says, ‘Oh, that looks just you, that does,’ and they’ve no idea who I am.

Tell me a little about Mock the Week. Do you have to mug up, read all the papers beforehand? It’s a bit like doing an exam in that we actually get some stuff beforehand, but the list is so long that basically it’s every story that happened in the news that didn’t involve someone dying over the last week. So, there is no way I can cover all of it. You just hope, like an exam, that the bit you’ve revised comes up, because it records for nearly three hours for a half hour show. You hope that the 10 minutes you zoned out for isn’t the 10 minutes that appears on television. When I know I’ve got Mock the Week in the diary, I think, oh, it’ll be nice to see those people again, but it is hard work, there’s no escaping that, especially after you’ve done quite a few. When you get a group of funny people together in a programme is it competitive? I’ve known lots of those guys for years and we all get on and it’s fine. But the way it’s set up, it’s always seven people trying to get through a door for two. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a joke that would have fitted, and I just couldn’t get a word in. But I suppose from an outsider’s point of view, that is where the dramatic tension is, because you’ve got all these people trying to get a word in. It kind of makes for absorbing television. FEATURE First things first, how do you take your coffee? Yesss, fetid human...I like my coffee like I like my coffee. Black and hateful. I use the taste to define the coming day, bitter and full of embarrassment and regret. My mind is fuelled by the rescourful antagonism of my fight against myself. Coffee fuels my self loathing and thus, my ability to transcend the mundane social norms and into everlasting awkwardness. So yeah, black. Has our coffee here on earth improved since your last tasting? My tendency is to ingest it until I need to vomit, then I clear a space for lunch. I also felt the insignificance of the brew was just a great way to insist on perfection. Asking for perfect coffee is like asking for the pinkest black, it’s all intergalactic bullshit. It tastes like a hobos anus at the best of time. The secret is this: the ultimate cup of coffee is actually tea. I’m searching for a new instant coffee, do you have any recommendations? Grind your fears into a powder, sprinkle liberally with an inability to confront personal issues and serve in the skull of your vanquished foe. Barring that, Nescafé or some shit... Who knows? Again, the prerequisite is bitter and hateful. But also surprisingly mild... Like hot water with a brown crayon melted in it. Why have you selected Bournemouth as the starting point for this particular voyage? Because like I, it appears to be ‘born’ in the ‘mouth’ of the infinite! Haha... I kid I kid... I do it for the beach frazzled boobies. Please come to the show or I will be mortally embarked and with resort of more self deprecating heavy metal... God knows you’ve got enough of that. I choose Bournemouth because I crave the love of aquatic birds. What is your favourite thing about Bournemouth? Primary coloured balloons, aloft in the pristine skies, screaming woeful tales of innocence lost. The sighs of heavily chested young lasses as they watch knobbly kneed men in ill fitting speedos strut their latent homosexuality for all to see. The despondent mothers of underplayed baristas, glumly agreeing with their flippant sons that the band in question was better before they had mainstream success. And ice cream. They have yummy ice cream there...

How do you plan to defeat the Royal Albert Hall? I shall conquer it in the ways of my ancestors...with diligence, antagonism and utter desperation. My legacy shall be complete upon bringing my sense of awkward musicality to the esteemed halls of the Royal Albert. I shall make it my bitch, and then realize that it actually owned my soul in the first place. My phasers are set on ‘odd’ What essential items do you carry with you on your missions? The planet smasher, two tubes of tomato paste, a flask of oregano oil, my favorite nudey magazine, and four hundred tiny humanoid parasites that tell me repeatedly that my dad didn’t really hate me... He just projected his own insecurities. What do you miss most from Ziltodia when you’re on tour? My sexual option and my studio in Which I create reams of fractal absurdity. The creatures that inhabit the blue desert outside my door and the rainstorms of liquid methane. Fractal time bending and probably antiques roadshow... Have you heard of Devin Townsend and if so, what do you think of his music? I think if he can get past his need for validation and be strong enough to admit he is f**king sick of playing rock music, he could do well. He just needs to stop doing adolescent bullshit, and start to compose for symphonies and play beautiful quiet music instead of confusing his incredibly tolerant audience with musically masturbatory metaphors about his own repressed adolescence. He needs to be strong enough to choose what’s right for him rather than what his fear of going broke dictates. What do you like to do to unwind when you’re not destroying other planets? I usually beg mrs Ziltoid for a toothy blowjob and then sulk when it doesn’t happen. Either that or make furniture out of driftwood and play bass guitar in front of repeats of ‘how it’s made’ We heard a rumour that you are, in fact, a puppet. Do you have any comment on this? It’s all so meta. A puppet controlling a puppet is just a vessel for communication with the divine universal geometry. It’s all of no significance, the hope is that the process resonates in eternity.

Bristol rock band Turbowolf are one of those bands you find yourself struggling to categorise musically. With so many different influences and sound scapes within their music it’s easy to see why it’s so darned difficult. We could go with a ‘wonderful cacophony of punk rock and electronics’ but that’s probably still a bit of a cop out to be fair. We’d urge you to check them out and decide for yourself, but before you do that check out the little interview we did with vocalist Chris on their return from yet another European visit. Turbowolf sounds a bit like a baddie from The Power Rangers. Where did the name actually come from? Not too sure if it came out of our minds or not. We were intoxicated one day and it just seemed to fit. The next day we thought ‘it fits’. The music becomes bigger than the name of the band doesn’t it? What can your fans expect of the new album ‘Two Hands’? I think they can expect an expansion on our sound. If people have the first album they’ll see that the faster bits are faster, the louder bits are louder, the quieter bits are quieter. It’s dynamic in every way. We learned a lot since we did the first album, and a lot has happened in our lives, so this is an expansion in a way. You’re off to Europe in March and are hitting the UK once again in April. Yeah, we’ve been to Europe quite a lot and we’re just back from a European tour with Death from Above 1979. We always like playing in Europe. Every night is different. We love experiencing different cultures, and it makes you realise that music is universal and talks to all people. We’re looking forward to getting out and playing new music.
Most recently we toured with Death From Above 1979, and that was pretty amazing. Hanging out with them was quite surreal because they were such a big influence on me, but then once we got to know them it stopped being surreal and seemed perfectly normal to have them in my life. Jesse [Keeler - bass and synths] spoke to me first. He said he loved my band. That was a good intro and blew me away a bit. Who’s got the worse habits in the band? None of us have anything too terrible, or we wouldn’t be able to live with each other for months on end in a van. Everyone’s pretty considerate. I’ve probably got the worse habit - I get up every day on tour and do some yoga. I try to be quiet but it’s fairly difficult to I guess. It’s probably quite annoying. What’s the ultimate dream? I would just like a fairer, more just world but that’s beyond a dream really. I think we’re kinda unable to make those societal changes for everyone. I have nothing too selfish I’d like really. I’m quite happy as a person and feel lucky to live in such a good society that I do. What’s the plan for 2015? Well the album’s out April 6th. Between now and then we’re rehearsing lots. We begin our tour April 8th around the UK, then on the 23rd we drive to Europe, finishing at Groezrock in Belgium. Then we’ve got a bunch of festivals in the UK and Europe all summer including some majors which is cool. In the Autumn we’re gonna be back out on another headline run til Christmas. So our whole year is going to be lots of playing and meeting new people. WORDS: MARIANNE HARRIS
Where are your favourite places to play? Every venue and every town or city is different, and provides a unique way of experiencing the show for us. There’s no particularly favourite place to play, I just love the variety of places, but there used to be a bar in Bristol called The Croft. It’s sadly now not around anymore. It was a major part of our birth as a band. It had a special atmosphere to it. Who’s the most famous person you’ve ever met and what did you say to them?

Mia Grace We were lucky enough to catch this young new artist before she’d even played live properly. She’s going to be a big name on the Southampton scene, you heard it here first. So what makes Mia Grace tick? So tell us a bit about yourself and what you do?
What do you have coming up? I have a gig coming up at The Joiners on the 15th of April supporting Marika Hackman that I’m very excited about! Also, me and a mate are hosting open mic nights at The Saints Pub during May and will be carried through the summer regularly so that should be good fun!
If you could collaborate with any artist, who Well, I’m 16 years old and I study music at would it be? college and have been writing music for a good few years now. I’m a waitress as well ha Ooo, well Whitney Houston of course, thats ha if that counts? if she was alive! But I love Beyonce she’s just flawless! To perform with her would just be What made you want to start performing? incredible. At first, the thought of performing to an audience scared the life out of me, but after Tell us 5 things we should know about you. the first time I did it, at my auntie’s wedding Hmm, five things you should know about I realised how much I loved it. It’s the buzz me... I’m not sure if theres that much to know! i guess and i just wanna share my music to anyone who wants to listen so any chance to Right, 1 - I love live music, 2 - I used to DJ, 3 - Im hard working, 4 - love a challenge, 5 perform, I take it! Always up for a good laugh What artist influence you? Why should we come and see you live? Ooo, Lily Allen is cool, she just seems to say it When I perform live I always try and have how it is and not care about what the press or anyone will say about it. She doesn’t cover a good laugh to create a chilled kind of up, writes all her songs herself and is a good atmosphere. It’s always good fun!
