WICKHAM FESTIVAL

FEATURE

PETER CHEGWYN

What made you first decide to put on a festival? I used to attend festivals in Portsmouth in the late 80s and early 90s and thought that anything Portsmouth could do, we could do better. We started the Gosport Festival in 1991, moved to Wickham via Eastleigh in 2006, and are now firmly established in Wickham which is a fantastic location for a relaxed and friendly festival like ours. Wickham has developed and grown a lot over the years, what’s been the pinnacle so far? There have been many high spots and very few lows. Just seeing the Festival grow while retaining its relaxed and friendly atmosphere is what makes it special. Where’s your favourite spot on site to hang out? The ‘Groovy Movie’ solar-powered cinema tent. I love chilling-out in the early hours watching old music videos and short films from across the globe.

Probably the biggest surprise in the line up comes in the shape of Thursday night headliner James Blunt. Now, we all think we know James Blunt, right? But recent escapades involving some rather hilarious Twitter comebacks from the man himself have shown us a different side to one we may have written off not long after the success of hit single ‘You’re Beautiful’. First spotted playing at the South by Southwest Music Festival and signed up by Linda Perry to her new label, Blunt recorded an album, Back To Bedlam, with Tom Rockrock in LA and it was released, to universal indifference. And then THAT single came out.

And so there it was: one big hit, two more albums, three world tours, four number one singles, five Grammy nods (plus two BRITS, two Ivor Novellos and a host of MTV awards), a six-piece band, seven whole years on the road, eight kiss and tells, and then the numbers spiral out of control: nearly 17m albums and 20 million singles sold worldwide. Plus over 5m Facebook ‘likes’, 250m plays on Spotify and an astonishing 257m YouTube views. But what do those figures mean? Some amazing experiences – some youthful excesses. The chance to use his high profile to do some good, supporting charities such as Médecins Sans Frontières and Help For Heroes (including three foiled attempts to play in Afghanistan for serving soldiers), and to draw attention to the issue of climate change. Yes. But to a lad who picked up a guitar and wrote his first song at 14, wrote his university dissertation on the music industry, took that guitar to the war in Kosovo, and always dreamed of making music, what success has meant, more than anything, was freedom. ‘What it allowed me to do was go on tour with a band. That was absolutely amazing, and so I recorded our second album, All The Lost Souls, with that band, and made a deeper, richer album. Then I recorded the third album, Some Kind Of Trouble, in the UK with lots of musicians and a fancy studio, and enjoyed making a more upbeat album. I picked up an electric guitar and did the kind of songs that I’d heard as a teenager but couldn’t replicate on my acoustic. It was fun playing catch-up, exploring all the things I wanted to do and be - all the other musicians I wanted to sound like.’ But for new album, Moon Landing, Blunt wanted to go back to sounding… like himself. ‘I was playing a lot of ukulele - mainly because it makes me look bigger,’ says James. The result is a collection of songs that are raw, direct, and emotionally honest. Words: Zan Lawther

How would you describe the Wickham experience to someone who has never been before? Safe, relaxed, friendly with great live music in a lovely rural setting. A perfect festival for someone who has never been to a festival before. What’s new for 2014? James Blunt and The Lightning Seeds! Also more street theatre, a few more exotic food stalls, and a giant illuminated Love Heart sculpture which lights up and sparkles when two lovers hold hands beneath it!

“Playing festivals gives us the chance to see other bands because when we’re touring we often don’t get to watch other bands. At festivals we can. You get to see some beautiful places too; you are surrounded by stunning scenery that just adds to the experience.” PAUL SARTIN OF BELLOWHEAD

Would you rather be able to run 100 miles per hour or fly at 0.01 miles per hour? Fly, definitely. It’d just be like floating. Nobody needs to run at that speed. I’d end up tripping up and dying. What’s your favourite song to play live? Perfect. Everyone goes mad for it. So much so that we’ve decided to record a video for it and release it as our next single! It’s the best video we’ve ever done too, which bodes well. Where would you rather live, Mordor or Glasgow? I love Glasgow. Mordor is full of orcs. So yeah, definitely Glasgow. It gets a bad rep, but everyone loves a good time up there. I’ve had some cracking nights out there. Would you rather have a photographic memory that can only retain disgusting thoughts for life or have a 1 minute memory where you constantly introduce yourself to everyone? Constantly introduce myself to people. In honesty, I meet a lot of people when I’m drunk that I can’t remember next time I see them. So it’d be fairly similar to my life right now. Would you rather have an extra finger or lose a toe? Extra finger so I could SHRED on the guitar and piano. I’ve heard that if you cut off a toe, your balance is all off, and I can barely stand as it is. Would you rather kiss a jellyfish or step on a crab? Step on a crab. Jelly fish are Satan’s sperm. Awful creatures. If you could have your favourite celebrity as a tamagotchi, who would it be? Nicholas Cage. If you could only say one word for the rest of your life, what word would it be? Lager. What Disney Prince/Princess would you most like to see in the Royal Family? Beast from Beauty and the Beast. Which character from the Simpsons do you see yourself in? Hans Moleman. Complete this sentence ‘I like Twitter because…’ People are hilarious. What would you most like to see David Attenborough do a voiceover for that’s unrelated to nature? Robot Wars. Who would win in a race between you and Mallory Knox? Us. By a country mile. I’ve never met a slower band.

FEATURE So we reckon that Phil Campbell has probably done enough now to achieve ‘legend’ status. Not content with being the lead guitarist in Motorhead for 28 years, relentlessly touring the world, selling millions of albums and headlining the biggest festivals, he’s now struck out around the country with his very own All Starr band. Having instantly become very excited to have such a huge rock and roll superstar coming back to Southampton, we at Southampton Music realised we didn’t know very much about the man himself. So we got our Zan Lawther to do some digging, and then we called him up to quiz him a bit, because that’s how we roll…..so here’s our crash course in all things Phil Campbell... Campbell was born in Pontypridd, where he still lives with his wife and kids. “I am very proud of being Welsh, well actually I am also half Italian. One of the nice things about being Welsh is the amount of creative people we have here and of course a lot of Welsh people come from hard working class backgrounds which makes this country real to live in, not just a fantasy land like other places.” he says. Phil started playing guitar at 10 years old and was playing semiprofessionally by age 13. “I guess the main reason I picked up a guitar was after listening to Hendrix in the West. I was never that interested in much else and it was my dream to make a living out of playing it because I never really fancied getting up early and working for the rest of my life. So in that respect I have been extremely lucky.” At the age of 12, Phil got Motorhead’s notorious frontman Lemmy’s autograph after a Hawkwind gig. In early 1984, following the departure of Brian Robertson, Lemmy held auditions for a new guitarist, narrowing the candidates down to two guitarists - Michael “Würzel” Burston and Philip Campbell. Lemmy had first planned only to hire one guitarist, but upon hearing Würzel and Campbell play together, Lemmy hired them both and Phil has continued to tour and record with Motorhead for the past 28 years. “I keep the shows fresh in Motorhead by not going through the motions and trying to have the best time every night. Also if you have a lot of great songs, it never gets boring to play them. Of course you have to remember that you are playing to mostly a different audience at each show.” The formation of the All Starr band is an important step, allowing Phil to experience another side to touring and the creative freedom to choose his own material “It’s always nice to step away from Motorhead after all these years, just for a short time, to do other things. If I wasn’t in Motorhead I would be happy to be in Rammstein or The Eagles.”

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | august 2014

Phil has an incredible passion for music and the All Starr band was set up to give him a chance to play rock and roll music to the fans, close up and intimate, the way it should be. “The All Starr band came about a couple of years ago when my eldest son had a big party for his birthday.” he says “Myself and him and his brothers together with vocalist Neil Starr, took over from the party band and did five songs which we had rehearsed a little. We had so much fun and the crowd loved it so we decided to put the band together. Only problem is all five of us are really busy with other bands and projects so it’s not always easy to plan for tours and even rehearsals, but we are getting there and looking forward to what the future might hold for us.” But even with the heavyweight of Phil’s involvement behind them, it must be a strange experience to go back to being a band that’s starting out again with something new. “My advice to bands starting out would be…...be the best you can be, believe in your music and get a good lawyer and of course...keep it fun, otherwise there wouldn’t be any point in doing it.” The set list will be full of classic Motorhead songs infused with covers of some of Phil’s favourite bands including Black Sabbath and many more. “You can expect to hear the unexpected!” Phil teases, making sure not to give too much away. And with support coming from UK hard rockers Buffalo Summer, as well as local heroes Dendera and Kodiak Jack we think we’re definitely in for a treat at the end of this month. Having toured incessantly since 1984, it’s fair to say that Campbell has it down to a fine art “I must have some books to read and of course my reading glasses…… and a couple of fart machines!” but wouldn’t give up any juicy tales of wild times on the bus “There are far too many tales from the road to even think about choosing one.” Maybe he’ll tell us some at the show! FEATURE Two driven ex-pat Aussies meet on Denmark St, London both determined to be the best at their art, rehearse twice then hit the stage at London’s 100 club to an immediate fanbase. Having smashed their way through their pledge campaign, the band recorded their debut at Monnow Valley and Miloco Studios and was produced by The Graveltones along with the producer Charlie Francis (REM, The Noisettes, Future Of The Left). The album was re-released in March as a deluxe edition featuring new tracks.

With their lyrics being compared to Dylan, riffs to Rage Against The Machine, vocals to Howling Wolf and beats to Bonham it’s easy to see why The Graveltones have stirred up so much noise of late. An easily identifiable original sound that will still be here in 20 years’ time, it’s bluesy, it’s gritty and it rocks.

2013 was a hugely successful year for the band, having released their eponymous debut and played an impressive 350 shows across the UK, Europe and Australia. They also landed sync deals with the Irish Lottery and cosmetic giants Rimmel who took advantage of their phenomenal studio sound using the bands 1st single ‘I Want Your Love’ to front their national TV advertising campaign against the face of Kate Moss. So far 2014 has seen them smash their slot at Download festival and set a date for release of their new single ‘Bang Bang’ (8th September don’t you know) and now they’re coming our way. We nabbed a few minutes with Jimmy O to find out a little bit more….. So tell us the story, how did two Aussies meet randomly in London? How do you make so full a sound with only two of you? We were both working on Denmark Street (Tin Pan Alley). I was Well the obvious things would be that I run a bass signal and Mikey working in a guitar shop on one side of the street and Mikey in a drum uses four sticks at times but I think we’ve just worked out how to play shop on the other. I was looking at putting something together and the songs being just two. The way we both play would be different if we bumped in to each other one day and decided to have a jam a few we had a bass guitarist or keys etc... days after, it always just worked between us even in that first rehearsal. Do you ever wish you had other bandmates to hang out with? How did your sound come together? Did you set out with a primary Ummm... I think that might be too many cooks in the kitchen kinda focus or did it grow organically? vibe, we’ve been doing this for long enough now I think a third I had a bunch of songs I had been working on when we met so we member may just get in the way. We have spoken about it from time used them as a base and just went from there really. We never actually to time and we’re certainly not ruling the idea out but it’s never just us spoke about how we wanted to sound or anything like that, we just two on the road any more, anyhow we got good people around us, decided to book a bunch of shows and ended up booking quite a few. we’ve got a great bunch of folks to hang with. We never rehearsed, we just played Which three artists have been the biggest influences on you? live and that’s how our sound came Bob Dylan, Nick Cave and Neil Young. together so yeah, very organically I How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard guess. you before? Ahh... I really hate to describe our music to people, we always just say it’s Rock ‘n’ Roll that’s about as close as we’ve ever come to describing our music. If you have a listen and decide what you think and then if you could describe it back to us that would be really helpful for future interviews. You played Download earlier this year, how did that go? Download was incredible! It was a big old crowd there and we had a lot of fun. Do you prefer playing festivals or venues? They really are two different beasts. We cut our teeth on the club circuit and playing venues you really get an intimate vibe with the audience but we’re pretty new to festivals and we’re having a lot of fun playing them. What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2014? We’ve got a lot of touring ahead. We play a run in Germany then back to the UK for our tour here, a European tour then we go to the states for a few shows. We’ll be recording the next album in November and then hopefully Japan and Australia to finish off the year. What can we expect from your live show? A lot of new songs to start with.

THE GRAVELTONES

& I.D. DJ SET X-PRESS 2

DJ SET JUSTIN ROBERTSON jon cross

FEATURE The Undertones emerged from Derry in 1977, the result of five friends learning how to play guitar and drums in time with someone singing. Even by the standard of that decade Derry was not the rock and roll capital of anywhere. With no live bands worth watching, they learned by listening to mail order records, reading one of the few copies of NME that made it to Derry but most of all from listening to John Peel’s wonderful show on BBC Radio One...

Practicing in their bedrooms eventually led to the band recording ‘Teenage Kicks’ in 1978 on the Good Vibrations indie label in Belfast. The legendary DJ John Peel received a copy and liked it so much he played it twice in a row on his radio show. For the following five years, John O Neill, his younger brother Damian, Feargal Sharkey, Billy Doherty and Michael Bradley crafted further numerous punk-pop gems and almost enjoyed the life of professional musicians. In 1983 Feargal Sharkey left the band to pursue a solo career and the remaining members decided to call it a day. But in 1999 The Undertones reconvened, without Feargal Sharkey, to once again perform their two-minute, three and a half chord songs to a new generation of fans in Derry. Fellow Derryman Paul McLoone replaced Sharkey on vocals and his vocal prowess and electric onstage presence soon convinced any doubters that he was more than capable of doing the job. After realizing that playing live was good fun the band repeated the experience in selected locations around the globe.

And now these legends of punk are coming to show Southampton how it’s done. And frankly, we can’t wait. So we nabbed some time with bass player, composer and all round great guy Michael Bradley to find out more about life on the road with the Undertones….. Teenage Kicks was first released in 1978, do you still get the same kick out of playing it live? I enjoy playing it more now than when it was first released. That’s because it’s now a well known song, which it wasn’t back in 1978. A well known song then was Rivers Of Babylon, or Yes Sir I Can Boogie. I wouldn’t claim that Teenage Kicks is in the same class as either of those, but it means that when we play it in a set, we don’t need to ask ourselves ‘Will the audience like this song?”. Although if we do play it and it doesn’t go down well with the audience, that’s a sign for us to quickly and quietly leave the stage, as the next step is, of course, the throwing of the bottles and the rotten fruit. What is your favourite song to play live? The easy answer would be Teenage Kicks, but the real answer for me is....... don’t know. What day is it? If it’s Monday, then I enjoy Here Comes The Summer. If its Tuesday , then it’s You’ve Got My Number. We don’t normally play on Wednesdays, so Thursdays would be Get Over You. Fridays my favourite song would be Jump Boys, and Saturdays ......When Saturday Comes. If it’s a Sunday , it’s Faith Of Our Fathers. But that’s only in chapel. On stage it’s Tearproof, even though it’s a bit of a strain on my tender tendons. What made you decide to get back together in 1999 after a 16 year break? For me it was the opportunity to go to the Galway Arts Festival, without having to pay for my own hotel. That was in 1999, when the four of us (sans Sharkey) got together at the invitation of the Saw Doctors & The GAF. I had a great time, we did two shows, without a real singer, and it seemed obvious that it worked - musically and personally. Then, the offer came in to officially open the Nerve Centre in Derry, and that seemed like a good reason to do a proper show on our own. But what would we do for a singer? (cue next question.....) Was it a difficult decision to reform without frontman Feargal Sharkey? I don’t remember any difficulty whatsoever. As I said, the four of us got on really well (the four being me, the brothers O’Neill, and Billy ‘Bill Stix’ Doherty) and we knew that it wouldn’t be the same crack with Feargal. That might sound strange for people outside the band, but there you go. So, three of us independently thought of Paul McLoone, who was from Derry, was good crack, and knew the words to some Velvet Underground songs. He also doubled up as a singer. Do you find you’re managing to inspire new fans and draw in a younger crowd these days or is it very much stalwart Undertones followers that have been with you forever? The audience can’t be stalwart Undertones fans who’ve been with us forever. If they were , then they’d all be our age , and from what I can see from the stage, there are definitely a lot of under thirties in the audience. So, yes, there must be a sprinkling of new fans there. Fans of Undertones records, and who presumably come along to hear them a bit louder than what they hear on their phone. Does it get harder being on the road so much as you get older? Not at all. Some of us used to hate doing tours back in the first flush of our career. We don’t do the five days a week, four weeks at a time tour schedule these days, so it’s much easier. The older you get, the more you appreciate

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | august 2014

the strange situation you find yourself in. Travelling to a city that isn’t Derry, to play songs that we came up with when we were teenagers. I love being a tourist on tour, no matter what the town or city. Unless of course, our manager books us into a hotel outside the town. I don’t like that. But then, there’s usually a bus stop nearby. How has the live show changed over the years? Well, yes. We play for longer, we play more songs from the first and second LPs than we used to before. And, of course, we do some songs which we’ve written since reforming. They’re particularly satisfying to play, especially when they get a good reaction from the audience. And, understandably, we have become better players of our instruments. That comes with time, age and practice. What can we expect from this run of shows? A fine selection of sandwiches and a sun tan; Reading another book about the Second World War; A working knowledge of Southampton streets; Several blisters on my fingers, and a chance to sleep in the afternoon; Watching ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ in the hotel room in the morning. Sorry, you mean what can the audience expect ? Loud, fast rock and roll with catchy choruses! Are there plans to release any more albums? No plans at the moment. It’s a matter of us getting our act together, metaphorically and literally. So much has changed since you first started making music. How do you think bands are better or worse off these days when it comes to getting their music heard? As I see it, it’s both better AND worse. Better in that the internet has made it so much easier to be heard by your fans. And those who are not your fans. It’s also easier to hear old records. But, there are so many good bands out there that it’s very difficult to get noticed. Also, it’s difficult to come up with songs that sound different from what came before. I know some bands still do that, but there are an awful lot of bands who sound like groups from the past. Not their fault, not a lot they can do about it, but it happens. If you had the choice, would you rather have started when you did or be starting out now? If I had the choice, that would mean I would have some kind of time travelling ability. I wouldn’t waste it on having a different musical career! I would use it to go back and hang around Liverpool in 1961, and hear the Beatles live in the Cavern. Or go to see the Ramones in New York in 1976, and then nip across to London to see the Sex Pistols at the Nashville. And finally, is there anything you would do differently, if you did it all over again? Or is there anything you still really want to do? No to both questions. Even though The Undertones never really sold a lot of records, and therefore didn’t make us all independently wealthy international playboys, we had a great time. And still do, whenever we meet up for our latest rock and roll adventure. Did I really say that? I would do that last sentence differently. Anything I still really want to do? Baby, be friends with you.......

previews Big noise, big beats, big sounds

Rising from the ashes of popular dubstep rockers Subsource comes Black Futures, with their ferocious beats and blinding rhythms ready to pummel you into a fit of unbridled ecstasy. A beautiful cacophony of sound fuses together the oscillating sub bass of dubstep, the ferocity of drum n bass, and the snarl of metal and punk that swells and drops like the pounding ocean. Country rock road music

FOR FANS OF: SEASTICK STEVE / JAKE BUGG / BOB DYLAN

It’s heavy metal mixed with pirates. Sounds great right? RIGHT! Grab your bottle of rum, raise that fist in the air and rejoice with Alestorm and their fiddle-infused Scottish power metal. Blending cheery folk music with the relentless pounding of drums and wailing guitars sounds like it shouldn’t work but if you like jumping around and shouting, then this is definitely the pit for you to be in. FOR FANS OF: TURISAS / SABATON / AMON AMARTH

OCT 18 | JOINERS Sleazy rock n rollers

SEP 27 | JOINERS

Cigarette in one hand, a jar of moonshine in the other and you’re all set for Wille & co, singing about their sights on the road. Always poignant with a need to make the crowd rock to the slide guitar, the gang has consistently gigged around Europe, racking up around 250 shows a year to spread the message of rock and roll. Fresh from a festival-filled few months, extend your summer with the Bandits.

OCT 11 | THE 1865 One for the moshers

If you’re looking for incredible dual guitar riffs and good moshing music, you’re in for a treat. This heavy metal band from Minnesota is taking the UK by storm and have been considered a great contributor to the djent scene. Each track will have you moving, jumping and fist-pumping uncontrollably to the unconventionally intense music of the awesome quintet. FOR FANS OF: ARCHITECTS / PARKWAY DRIVE / SUICIDE SILENCE

THE TREATMENT

All aboard the dirty, sleazy rock n roll train! Not so new kids on the rock-block, The Treatment are back, bringing you their own brand of filthy riffs and churning rhythms. Formed in 2008 when most of the band weren’t even old enough to legally drink in pubs, they’ve matured over the past 6 years into the behemoth of RAWK you now see before you. OCT 21 | JOINERS

Psychedelic groove for the 21st Century

Brant Bjork is a master of all trades; talented performer, business owner and all round groovy guy. When he’s not travelling with his band, he’s living the ultimate rock n’ roll lifestyle - outback in Palm Desert making music. Unapologetically true to punk-rock expression with heavy bass and raspy vocals which swing and soar into action, cutting through the petty and getting back down to the sweaty. FOR FANS OF: KYUSS / RED FANG / TRUCKFIGHTERS / CLUTCH

The rhino marches on....

FEED THE RHINO

This band confess that they want to rise with fierce intention and a dream to tear a venue apart. And they do not disappoint. With visciously distinct vocals from lead singer, Lee Tobins, and heavy breakdowns from drummer, Chris Kybert, it won’t take long for the pressure to build. Add to the bill the excellent Night Verses and the frankly insane Baby Godzilla - expect sweat running down the walls.

OCT 24 | JOINERS

FOR FANS OF: WHILE SHE SLEEPS / NORMA JEAN / GALLOWS

PURSON

OCT 26 | JOINERS Strong, clean metalcore

Beautiful theatrics with a 70’s vibe

Exploring the world of proto-metal, Purson weave together influences like Cream, Deep Purple and Jethro Tull into a quasi-mystical pastiche of psychedelic wonder featuring fuzzed up guitars and Wurlitzer organs. Fronted by the betwitching theatrics of Rosalie Cunningham let them cast a spell over you with their catchy grooves. FOR FANS OF: NAAM / CREAM / JETHRO TULL

THE WORD ALIVE

The ability of lead vocalist Tyler ‘Telle’ Smith to simultaneously emit both screamed and clean vocals together with a clever and effective use of synths prevent The Word Alive from blending in with every other post-hardcore band around. Honest and heartfelt, they’re not trying to be the next big thing……but we think they just might be!

OCT 28 | JOINERS Comedy Doncaster-flavoured rap

FOR FANS OF: MISS MAY I / ATTACK! ATTACK! / MEMPHIS MAY FIRE

MC DEVVO

Mildy offensive and totally hilarious MC Devvo is on a mission. One man and his microphone and his unique brand of, erm, rap allowing him to comment in his unique Donny drawl about all things drugs, sex and violence. No-one can be quite sure if Devvo takes his music seriously but his shows sell out all over the UK, so c’mon, GET IN YEH?!

ones to watch

Building on the hard work of the last few years, Kodiak Jack find themselves refreshed and ready to reveal their new look and new songs and prove the plaudits the first album received were fully justified. Hailing from the Portsmouth, this five piece hard rock outfit’s debut album ‘Your Death: My Glory’ was released in late 2011 and gained critical acclaim across the board with Classic Rock, PowerPlay and FRONT magazine amongst those that hailed its release. Radio airplay followed and BBC Introducing, along with many national and regional stations all picked up on the catchy hooks and driving riffs that define the album. ‘Wasted Youth’ featured on a ‘Best Of British’ CD which featured on an international edition of Metal Hammer, ‘Waves’ was used on the closing credits for Eurosports British Superbikes coverage and no less than five tracks were featured on Rumble Rides: Muscle Drag DVD that was released in the USA. On stage Kodiak Jack have built up a reputation for their energetic live shows which has seen them build a loyal fan base and earn them support slots with Canadian metallers Kobra & The Lotus, guitar legend Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big & Racer X), Everything Everything and Elvis Jackson to name but a few. January 2013 saw the band invited to record their new album with Brian Wheat, bassist with US Rock Gods, Tesla. Laying down eleven tracks that will form the upcoming new record, the band can now count Brian as a fan, so much so he has been sporting his very own Kodiak Jack T-shirt, most recently when he took to the stage here in the UK for the Classic Rock AOR festival in April! The first single to be lifted from the new album is the Planet Rock endorsed ‘Brother’ which is out now and things really do seem to be going from strength to strength .

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | AUGUST 2014

So, who are you and what do you all do in the band? I’m Jeff, Kodiak Jack’s Lead Guitarist, the rest of the band are Bryn on vocals, Jon on guitar & backing vocals with Kev on bass and Keiran on drums. How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it before? I suppose you could describe Kodiak Jack as a meeting of hard rock, classic rock, grunge and everything in between but with our own modern take. Catchy choruses, big riffs, vocal harmonies, driving bass lines… It’s all there and we deliver it 100%. It is who we are, no mucking around! Who are your biggest influences? All of us in the band have a lot of crossover in our musical taste, as well as our own personal preferences but for me, personally its Guns N Roses, Pantera, all the early 90’s Grunge bands, The Cure, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath… the list is endless. I’ll even put on Duran Duran, Fleetwood Mac or Otis Redding if the mood suits. My taste in music has changed a lot since my younger teenage years. I’m a lot more open to new and different styles of music these days. How did you all get together as a band? Back in the early days it was through mutual friends on both me and Bryn’s sides. As the band has grown over the years Kev came in on bass, Jon (Kev’s cousin) joined on guitar/ vocals and then Keiran joined just over a year ago on drums. The band now is tight, not only musically but as friends too. Plus with the help of our crew Mark and Kelv and our manager Jules it feels like one big happy (sometimes!) family. I’m glad to be part of it all. Your new single ‘la rue’ is out soon, what can we expect? One big ballsy song! Straight from the get go you’re suckered in. Catchy verse, massive sing-along chorus, fat guitars, pounding drums, what more could you want? It’s a rock song but not what you consider the norm, it’s a little different put it that way... If you could go on tour with anyone, who would it be? I’ll answer with my own choice but I’m pretty sure the others would agree?! It has to be the original line up Guns N Roses. That band, at that period of time was immense. As for current bands, Queens of The Stone Age, Alter Bridge, Soundgarden, I think we would fit in quite nicely with any of those! Where do you see Kodiak Jack in five years’ time? Releasing album number four or five with a few world tours under our belts! It’s our dream to make this a full time thing. We’ve put in a lot of effort over the years and it will happen. We’ve had the chance to throw in the towel a couple of times over the years but we haven’t, we’ve stuck together and moved forward. So yeah, world tours in five years’ time! Finally, why should we come check out your live shows? Because live we take it up another gear! The album is brilliant but I think live is when we really shine, we play with passion and ferocity, all the while keeping it tight. I will say not many local bands can touch us live and you can include National acts as well. That’s not us being big headed, it’s fact. Words: Zan Lawther
