This month we have hip-hop royalty in Southampton in the form of House of Pain main man Everlast who will be bringing his acoustic show to the Orange Rooms on the 13th, we take a look at his illustrious career spanning almost a quarter of a century in the biz. Also this month we chat to another, somewhat different, legend; Shaun Ryder, about the Happy Mondays, TFI Friday and what it’s like being sober. Plus we catch up with the lovely Ellie Roswell of fast rising London quartet Wolf Alice ahead of their O2 Guildhall show. FEATURE
After a wildly successful run with House Of Pain, Everlast shocked the musical world in 1998 with the release of his solo album “Whitey Ford Sings The Blues”. A blues, folk, country and rap inspired release on which Everlast sang in a gravelly voice and played an acoustic guitar. The collection was anchored by the smash hits “What It’s Like” and “Ends” and sold more than 2 million copies worldwide, becoming the laidback, groove-laden soundtrack to a whole generation’s summer. Since then, Everlast has become one of music’s most successful, eclectic artists, collaborating with legendary rock group Santana on the Grammy-winning single “Put Your Lights On” and forming the hardcore rap supergroup La Coka Nostra with former House Of Pain member DJ Lethal, among others. With such a diverse, disparate musical background, Everlast remains convinced there is only one source for his song writing prowess. “I’m an MC,” he says. “When I sing, I’m MC’ing. It’s all hip-hop to me. I wouldn’t be in it and doing any of it if it weren’t for hip-hop. I feel like some sort of human mixer that just takes these musical styles and tries to spit them out over a beat somehow.” With his fourth blues-based album “Love, War & the Ghost of Whitey Ford” he finally put our white trash hero to rest but with 2011’s comment on the state of life in America “Songs Of The Ungrateful Living”, Everlast again showed that he’s one of the most talented people to ever mix musical styles. It’s an album that pulls from several seemingly unrelated musical and thematic corners of the country to poignantly highlight not only the bleak status of the nation and its inhabitants but also the untapped potential of both. “I just wrote a group of songs and they all started to have the theme of darkness,” Everlast says. “I just tap into what’s around me, but I didn’t have a title for the album for a long time. One day I was just thinking that the ungrateful living is everybody. Anybody that takes a breath probably doesn’t appreciate how much that breath is worth. I see a whole lot of people taking life and the world for granted. It’s not even a slight on anyone. It’s everyone. Me too.”
He’s a master of reinvention, a troubadour of change and one of the most recognisable voices to come out of America. Everlast is a man that’s been on an epic musical journey. He got his first break in the 80’s when gangster rap pioneer Ice T discovered him and released his early material. But it was in 1992, whilst fronting the rap group House Of Pain, that Everlast enjoyed his first major career-defining moment. The group’s bone-crushing single “Jump Around” became one of the decade’s biggest songs and in fact, one of the most recognisable songs, well, of all time. Instantly catapulting the band into the stratosphere and helping to secure hip-hop’s mainstream future, the song is an out and out anthem. It’s still used regularly in TV commercials and movies and no party is complete without it blaring out of the sound system as the crowd literally get up, get up and get down.

In 2013 Everlast released “The Life Acoustic”. A collection of songs stripped even further back than previous albums that really bare the soul of this intriguing artist. Everlast claims his ability to pen tunes comes naturally. “My song writing has never been something I buckled down and forced myself to do,” he says. “It comes in waves. It comes in periods and usually it ends up forming some sort of cohesive connection between all of them, whether it’s on different levels and different topics. There’s darkness, but there’s always this tiny little sliver of hope there somewhere.” So it comes as no surprise that his live acoustic shows are often an emotional affair as he takes his dedicated fanbase on a journey through his heart, his hip-hop and deep into the underbelly of America. This month this legend of the airwaves comes to our very own Orange Rooms for what is destined to be a spectacularly humbling performance. The chance to catch this maestro of acoustica and downright hip-hop hero in the intimate setting of one of Southampton’s most loved clubs is surely something not to be missed. Butserfest is one of those little gems in the South’s summer festival calendar. Set in the beautiful countryside landscape of The Queen Elizabeth Country Park on the A3 near Petersfield, it is a one day, multi stage, multi genre outdoor event, aimed primarily at young people, and is the perfect platform for teenagers and families looking to have not only a cracking day out in a safe environment but an exciting live music experience. Manchester’s legendary Happy Mondays are back out on the road later this year, celebrating the twenty-fifth anniversary of the band’s classic album ‘Pills ‘n’ Thrills And Bellyaches’ - with the band set to perform the album in its entirety, in addition to other hits. Released in 1990, ‘Pills ‘n’ Thrills…’ spent thirtyone weeks on the UK albums chart, peaking at #4, and was preceded by the release of Happy Mondays’ biggest hit singles, ‘Step On’ and ‘Kinky Afro’, which both reached #5 in the UK singles chart. It was the album that put them on Top of The Pops. It’s the soundtrack to an era which, for many, was a blur of raves, smiley faces and 24 hour party people. The tour kick-offs on Thursday, 5th November at our very own O2 Guildhall and frankly, we couldn’t be more excited that they’re coming our way so we jumped at the chance to spend a few minutes with legendary frontman Shaun Ryder… What’s the vibe like in Happy Mondays now you’re older and a little wiser? It’s alright y’know. It’s better than it was back in the day! You’re playing the whole of ‘Pills n Thrills & Bellyaches’ in full on this tour. What’s your view of pills, thrills....now - 25 years later? It’s a good album, y’know, it’s great. I enjoy playing it. I put it to bed a long time ago so I only sort of still know the songs we still play on stage so I got it out a couple of weeks ago and I’m enjoying it, I think it’s great. Do you have a favourite song on that album? No, I enjoy ‘em all. D’you know what, we do most of ‘em anyway so I’ll just enjoy it – that’s it.
You’ve got a new track coming out…that you recorded in the rainforest, is that right? What was that like as an experience? Yeah, that’s right. We did it for a TV show that airs in September. We went and lived with the Embera tribe in the Amazon jungle in between Peru and Panama and we lived and hunted with them and drunk hallucinogenic concoctions and got initiated into their tribe and then we made some music with them. And what it is, you can download the track when the TV show airs and all the money that it raises goes to the tribe so they can keep living their way of life. And is there the potential for a new album? I’d do an album tomorrow. I really would. I’m game to do an album tomorrow but the thing is, unlike Black Grape where really there’s just me and Kermit so it’s a lot easier to do so we’ll probably have a Black Grape album before there’s a Happy Mondays album, cos there’s five people that have all got a big say on what goes on in the Mondays, it’s a lot harder to get anything done. But I would be up for doing one tomorrow. I mean it was easy doing that track. We did a Happy Mondays album back in 2007 but that wasn’t with all the original members but doing that track, it was so easy to work on y’know with everybody so I can’t see why we can’t do an album. Do you find it different working with everybody now you’re off the drugs? You know it’s all different. Everybody is a lot older and wiser so it’s totally different. It’s a ball. It’s a breeze. Your history with drugs has been widely publicised – and Happy Mondays achieved so much over the past 25 years, is there any particular event you wish you could go back and do over now you’re sober? No not at all. I mean we used the press y’know. Being in a band and getting well known in a band, it’s like being a professional footballer – it’s only a few people out of thousands and thousands of people that are able to do that so we used every bit of our knowledge that we could

Do you prefer the music or the business of being a personality? Well they both go hand in hand. You can’t do one without the other. If it was just as simple as making music and putting it out that would be great but it’s not, it’s called the Entertainment Business. The music business is all still part of the entertainment game and that’s how it is. TFI Friday returns to our screens this week and we hear Chris Evans himself had to pull a few strings to get you back onto Channel 4. Are you going to behave yourself this time? Well it’s after the watershed this time y’know and I’m 20 years wiser haha. So that’s a ‘no’ then… Well it doesn’t matter because it’s after 9 ‘o’ clock so we’re gonna have a bit of fun.
What do you think it is that endears Happy Mondays to their fans? D’you know what? Our fan base is great. They g o f r o m 9 y e a r s o l d t o 8 0 ye a r s o l d , w e’ ve g o t a p r o p e r c r o s s - s e c t i o n . We p i c k e d u p a l o a d o f n e w fans from me and Bez doing reality television so I r e a l l y d o n’t k n o w. to make it and that included the press, and letting onto things that really got a rise from them and used it. So as far as getting off our faces, we were young lads travelling the world in a rock band, living the dream so y’know you just do what you do. I would advise that to anybody – make sure you stay alive and get through the other end but certainly go and have a good time because before you know it you’re 52.

FEATURE 2014 proved a breakthrough year for this London quartet, following the release of their hugely acclaimed Creature Songs EP. Sold out headline shows throughout the country and packed festival slots at Glastonbury, Reading / Leeds and Bestival, amongst many other festival appearances, all culminating in the band being named on the long list for the BBC Sound of 2015 and winning Best Breakthrough Artist at the recent UK Festival Awards. Go team! And they show no signs of taking their feet off the pedal in 2015. In January they managed to fly out to Australia for a bunch of massive shows there, then the band holed-up in the studio to work on their debut album. It was at this point that we thought we’d better get in there quick if we wanted to have words with this busy band of bees. Luckily the wonderful Ellie Roswell managed to find a few moments to speak to us about how excited she was about heading to the USA, Europe and finally back to the UK for the run of shows we’re all eagerly waiting for now... You’re just back from the magical land down under, how was that? It was amazing. It was our first time over there and despite a horrific journey it was amazing. Good crowds, good weather, it was lovely. And you’re literally just about to fly over to the USA for a few headline shows, are you excited about that? Yeah I’m so excited. It will be our first headline shows in America and our first time in LA and New York. I don’t really know what to expect but it should be a nice surprise hopefully. Have you played in the US before? Well we played SXSW Festival last year and that’s as far as it goes. And then you’re heading to Europe with Alt-J, how did that come about? We have the same management and they were playing a show in Paris where their supports dropped out so our manager asked us to fill in. So we drove down there and they were really nice guys and we got talking to them, they really enjoyed our show and we really enjoyed theirs and they asked us to come out on tour with them. Is there anywhere you’re particularly looking forward to playing out there? Yeah, everywhere really. I love Paris. I love Berlin and there’s loads of places I’ve never been before that I’m excited to see like Vienna and Oslo and places like that. And THEN you’re coming back for a run of headline shows in the UK, do you ever stop touring? Apparently not! This is a new thing for us. We’re used to doing long tours but having long breaks in between them so God knows how we’ll survive but I think it’s a good thing and probably a good sign. Do you feel differently about headline shows than support slots? Yeah of course, there’s way more pressure to deliver at your own shows because people have paid money and taken the time to come and see YOU. If they don’t like you in a support slot they’ve not really lost out because they’ve still got the band they came to see left to see. If you suck as the headline band then you’re in for it really! And all these shows are happening whilst you mix your debut album – how’s that going? Good. Pretty nerve-wracking but it’s sounding good and I’m really excited for everyone to hear it.

Can we expect a mixture of new songs and songs we’ve already heard? I think some people will have heard songs if they’ve seen us live and there’s a few songs that people will definitely know but I’d say 90% is new material. Your EP Creature Songs was a bit of a smash hit last year, in fact the whole of last year was a bit of a smash hit for you – what was your particular highlight? It feels like a long time ago so it’s good to get some new music out as soon as possible. I’ve really enjoyed being in the studio both times, especially recording Creature Songs as we were in Brussels and it was our first experience going away and recording music. I liked going to America and SXSW and really all the festivals were great. You got to play some amazing festivals too, what was your favourite and are there any you’re particularly gunning for this year? I’d like to play all the American festivals like Coachella, they all seem cool. Last year we really enjoyed playing Benacassim because it was hot, and it was night time and there was a big crowd which was kind of unexpected as we’d had a really gruelling journey. But obviously it was incredible to play Reading/Leeds and Glastonbury and all the big ones as well. What’s it like being the girl in a van full of boys? It’s alright! It’s not really a thing. It’s never nice to do long, massive journeys. Last year we drove from Berlin to Manchester and it was my birthday and it was about 40 degrees and I was like, this is NOT how I want to spend my birthday….but then you get off and do a show and it’s all worth it. But I don’t really care that they’re boys, they’re nice boys! For those that might not have had the pleasure of seeing you live yet, what can we expect from your shows? You can expect lots of energy, lots of fun and a mixture of moods. Some emotional, some y’know, stupid. I’m excited to see what it’s like myself to be honest! We’re learning new songs at the moment so y’know, it might be shit……but at least then you get a good laugh haha! WORDS: ZAN LAWTHER

Recently my son, Sebastian, has been playing a spelling game on his iPad and every time he presses the ‘y’ he cracks up laughing at the sound it makes. Officially my new favourite letter. If you were born as a member of the opposite sex, what would your name be? Shawn. That was easy. If you could be any comic book character, who would you choose? Rick Grimes. It would suck to lose a hand but being a formidable and fearless leader in a zombie infested postapocalyptic world would be fantastic. What’s your favourite song to play live and why? Hand in Hand with the Damned. It’s hard to explain why, there is just something about that song that fires me up every single time. Could you beat Prince at Badminton? Yes because that dude is such a beast on the guitar I can only assume he hasn’t had time to brush up on his badminton skills. Plus, I hate losing at anything competitive. Would you rather fight 100 duck sized Hulks or 1 Hulk sized duck? 100 duck sized hulks and I’m bringing my 9-iron. What was your best subject at school? Mathematics. I was a huge number nerd and still am. What’s your favourite thing about coming to the UK? The pubs and the people in the pubs. I love the conversation. And the beer. What’s your biggest confession? I see what you did there. Would you rather have chicken feet or cats paws? Cat’s paws. They are very nimble. Who would win in a fight: Dolly Parton or Mick Jagger? Dolly Parton. Mick Jagger would probably be drunk and distracted. What would your catchphrase be? Everything is coming up Milhouse! If you could go back to the beginning and choose a different name for your band, would you change it and what would you change it to? The Beatles so that people would buy our records accidentally. If you could book a gig with three bands from any point in time who would play? Mae, Smashing Pumpkins and Ben Folds.

FRANCIS Heads up Southampton, there’s a new soul guru in town. The gloriously talented Jack Francis has been hocking his beautiful acoustic tunes around the local folky scene since last November and is becoming an increasingly popular face, and more importantly, voice around these here parts. With an image straight out of the 70’s rock era there’s an aura of cool surrounding this guy and his laid back, hauntingly wonderful acoustic tunes are tinged with an old style Americana, normally found in the back rooms of bars in Nashville. Having popped up across the city and beyond frequently since he embarked on his solo efforts late last year, and having recently been announced for Southampton’s newest music festival iNDEPENDENCE we couldn’t resist the opportunity to have a few moments with the man himself and caught up with Jack to find out a little bit more..

It’s kind of a mix of Acoustic Soul, Folk, Country & Americana. Where can we see you live next? Coming up locally I have August 14th at the Alexandra in Southampton. August 17th at The Joiners and September 12th at St. Denys Church for a charity event. What’s on the agenda for the rest of 2015?
I’m currently in the middle of finishing a few tracks I’ve been working on in the studio. So I guess the next step is to get those out to as many people as possible once they’re finished. As well as continuing to play shows around the South Coast and London. If you could tour with anyone, who would it be? The Rolling Stones would be a lot of fun. Bruce Springsteen would be great too, his live show is unbelievable. Why should we come check you out at iNDEPENDENCE Festival?
When did you first start making music and what prompted you to do so?
I think it’ll be something a little different for people. A little more relaxed and intimate as opposed to the Rock & Roll bands on the bill.
I guess I was about 14. After learning to play guitar I decided that I wanted to start creating music as oppose to learning other people’s songs.
