Skindred roll into Southampton next month – everyone’s favourite ragga metallers are sure to wake us all up out of our post-festive season slumber when they hit The Mo Club on 23rd January. It’s hard to believe that the smash hit debut album Babylon is over a decade old but with the hotly anticipated Kill the Power set for release in January we know you can expect a live show full of new surprises, old favourites and of course, the famous Newport ‘Copter.

Recently, the band have been working their little socks off. Amongst trying to finish recording and mixing the new album, they’ve been playing headline shows and festivals across the globe, recording videos in India, teasing us with snippets from Kill the Power and generally having LOADS of fun. We caught up with the band in Berlin and had a good old chat with Dan (Pugsley, bass) to find out a bit more….

So, there’s been a lot of build up towards Kill the Power coming out, what can we expect? How has the Skindred sound evolved?

I think that Kill the Power is really the record we wanted Roots Rock Riot to be, there’s a lot going on there. There are songs on the new record that really lean towards Babylon style Skindred, heavy dancehall, detuned guitars, all high energy stuff, and there’s a part of the record that’s a development of some of the ideas on Union Black, really bringing the electronic, production elements forward.

Then there’s this relatively unexplored element to Skindred on there.... I hate saying “mature” when talking about music, that’s usually a red flag for me, but we’ve written some songs that I think just stand out. I wanted to make a record like Blood Sugar Sex Magic. I loved that record and it was so influential on me growing up, an album with tons of material, all quite different but all totally representative of the band.

You’re well known for your high energy live shows, is it tough recreating that on a record or do you think the two should retain a degree of separation?

I read this Jimi Hendrix quote before we ever started Skindred, and it was something to the effect of how you should use the studio as an instrument in its own right. We’ve always approached it that way; do what you do in the studio and just figure it out later on. Live is its own thing, you may not be able to have a huge

string section with you on tour, but having a live band in front of you is so powerful in its own right.

Nowadays, having Dan Sturgess on stage with us, those lines have been blurred because with his set up he can trigger parts from the album that would have been impossible to play live otherwise.

You’ve certainly been busy recently, with trips to Japan and India to name a few. Where have you seen the most surprising response to your music?

Japan is always amazing, and India was crazy... I never imagined we’d ever be playing there. The crowd was amazing, totally amazing. The place with the most surprising, or powerful response was Turkey. When we played a festival there this year it was the first event since all the social unrest that happened earlier in the year. At the heart of it we are just a bunch of guys that write and play music that we love and we want people to have a good time and dance, be themselves at the shows, but when it goes further than that its mind blowing. When we opened with our song “Stand For Something” the crowd sang it with such passion where they’d really taken on the lyrics, I was really moved. Never felt anything like that before.

Where has been the most fun and why?

I just love Japan! I love being in that country, always so fun to play. If I’m totally honest it’s because I love the food so much haha!

It must get tiring travelling so much – does anyone in the band have any habits that particularly grate when you’re on the road?

Do people in my band have bad habits? Absolutely!

allowed to print. I’ll use Arya because he’s a good sport, he loves to play annoying games where he poses you with two disgusting scenarios, usually involving body parts and excrement and you have to choose which one you’d do if you had to do one... and give your reasons. 5 minutes of it is actually quite amusing but when you’re trying to sleep when you’re travelling or trying to relax and all that’s going on... it grates a little ha!

Which up and coming artists would you recommend Skindred fans check out?

Do any of you have any other talents, apart from musicianship?

Dan, you’re originally from Southampton. Does that make playing here a different experience to other towns? We think Southampton holds a torch for Skindred and really sees you as being one of ‘our’ bands!

I think everyone has their own thing when we’re at home.

Benji is very much music orientated; I’m pretty much the same with comics and cooking thrown in. Mikey is really getting into tattooing, he’s actually working at a studio when we’re not on tour and Arya loves the business side of music, that’s more his thing, he’s managing a couple of bands.

The music industry has changed a lot since Skindred first formed, have there been any hard lessons learnt along the way?

The industry has changed a ton since we started! We came out at a time before downloading, by the time our second record dropped it was the norm. I think the biggest lesson I’ve learnt is just make music you love, regardless of how commercially viable it is, because really, nowadays it’s so hard to sell albums if you’re just making music you don’t care about to make a buck and it doesn’t sell? You’ve cheated the people and cheated yourself. Better to be real. That is true success. I don’t need any awards or pats on the back.

There’s been a lot of debate recently about the future of live music, with many smaller venues closing across the country. What do you think can be done to enthuse the public to come back out to support live shows?

The issue of getting people back to shows is tricky. I think it’s just that at the moment people don’t have a lot of money to go to shows. A lot of music fans I know, rather than going to lots of gigs throughout the year will save and go to a festival, treat it like a holiday, especially with festivals becoming more accessible to families. That does prove the market for live music is there, it’s just going to take some time before people can afford to get to gigs regularly again.

Take the recent furore over the Download 2014 announcements for example, do you think there are simply too many bands available these days, with a lack of new big players coming forward to carry the mantle of ‘headliner’?

I think we like bands that are just doing their own thing and doing it really well. I have got a lot of love for Turbowolf. I think those guys are great, really looking forward to their new record. I saw a band the other day called Empire, just been sent their album.

I think they’re definitely one to watch, great guitar playing and singer’s voice is unreal... like a soulful Bruce Dickinson... ha!

Yeah definitely, obviously I grew up there till I moved to Wales and started the band. At our first shows in Southampton there was always a contingency of my friends there, it being a home town thing so I think that really developed the relationship.

Benji has always said in private “Southampton just get it” and I think that’s because Skindred in part is a product of Southampton. It’s always had a great alternative scene. I’d go to nights (probably a little younger than I should have been) and hear DJ Hammy play records, but then there’s always been this dance music thing here too. The city has been very influential on my tastes and therefore the music we make.

With such a great back catalogue, how do you decide what to play at your live shows?

It is getting harder to choose the songs we play live. There are some mainstays in there; people always want to hear Ratrace, they always want to hear Nobody, so we have to be aware of that. What we tend to do now, for our own sanity, is to play all the “classics” but do new things with them, give them different breakdowns or create mash ups with other songs. Doing that with the set has given us a lot of freedom.

And finally, is there a question that you wish interviewers would ask but they never do? What is it and what’s the answer?

One lump or two? But none for me, I’m sweet enough haha!

Absolutely. There’s been this thing for a while, unless you get Metallica or Iron Maiden to play your festival it’s just not going to sell. I think it’s really up to the promoters to champion newer bands and bring them through. I think that’s been the case with Rammstein and Slipknot, but those are still bands that have been established for at least 10 years! Promoters need to take a chance, because it’s an investment in the business as a whole.

If you had the chance to give up the band life to become a pirate would you do it?

Like the old saying goes, ‘Piratin’ ain’t easy’ , so probably not.

If you had the chance to give up the band life to become a pirate would you do it?

If it’s the old school Pirate we’re talking about then yea, treasure, tropical conditions, rafts, women, rum, the open water, islands, women, treasure, sand, rum...but if it’s a Somali pirate then it’s not for me...rubber dinghy, oil platforms, poor air quality, probable death by propellor and no money....bit like being in a band...

If you had to eat one of the following what would it be: Octopus Tentacles, kangaroo’s tail or zombie brains?

Well I quite like Octopus tentacles so that one...Zombie’s don’t exist so I don’t know how that’s going to happen..although I did know a kid at school who used to sit infront of the TV all day and he was a bit like a zombie but I don’t think he had any brains...he stank and I hated him..

How was the band formed? in 2001 we planted an acorn, 2 years later, pete was born. Matt could play all instruments so we just listened to him like a village elder until we began to make noises and write words to the things he was doing and saying...We ventured into punk rock as it seemed like the appropriate sound cause we couldn’t shred.

Who would win in a race, Attention Thieves or Max Raptor?

I once ran the 100m and was winning but due to the nature of my school field I put my foot into a rabbit hole and twisted my ankle.. I think I’d need to know the format and event location before making any rash decisions...

Where’s the weirdest place that inspiration for a song has struck?

In a cave in Gozo...

What album/song are you ashamed to admit you secretly love?

Craig David’s rendition of Come Together was a triumph.

If you knew today was your last day on earth, how would you spend it?

Trying to cure my terrible illness...

If you had a snail that could magically grant wishes, what would you name it?

Paul

If you had to eat one of the following what would it be: Octopus Tentacles, kangaroo’s tail or zombie brains?

Obviously if you eat an infected zombie brain you will become a zombie, so that’s out of the question! Kangaroos tails are full of aboriginal magic so probably, by a process of elimination, an octopus’ tentacle as I’ve heard they are the tastiest thing with eight limbs and lovely on a rustic loaf.

How was the band formed?

Out of molten magma that had risen to the earth’s surface under incredible pressure so that when it was exposed to air it began to cool very quickly causing the outer layers to form a network of underground honeycomb tunnels with a chocolate coating.

What goes around the world but stays in a corner?

The first adhesive postage stamp, commonly referred to as the Penny Black, was issued in the United Kingdom in 1840.

Who would win in a race, Attention Thieves or Max Raptor?

Max Raptor! They can run but they can’t hide!!

Where’s the weirdest place that inspiration for a song has struck?

The weird thing about inspiration is that it normally occurs in odd places.

You can be at work or in the shower or naked in a fridge and the ideas come streaming out, but try and find it in a practice room.

What album/song are you ashamed to admit you secretly love?

There’s no shame in secret love! But people would probably cringe if they saw us dancing/air bassing to Luther Vandross.

If you knew today was your last day on earth, how would you spend it?

Probably in denial. It would depend how the earth was ending, we’re pretty confident we could survive a zombie apocalypse or some kind of bird flu outbreak. If aliens invade us then you can’t just roll over and let them have the run of the place.

If you had a snail that could magically grant wishes, what would you name it?

It would have to be a secret code name so that not too many people would be aware of it’s extreme value and power, so maybe Codename:HumousSalmonHammer?

How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before?

Really Great!!

If you had the chance to go back in time for 24 hours, where and when would you go?

Probably to the 1970’s to Guam

If you had the chance to go back in time for 24 hours, where and when would you go?

This is a tough question because there are literally an infinite number of choices, so here a few decent options; 1) Anytime that the dinosaurs were about, they knew how to get it done!

2) Just before the big bang (if it happened!) so that when you came back you could be really smug about knowing the truth!

3) And maybe back to when we played Reading festival because that was an awesome experience and one we would love to relive!

Why should we come to see your live show? ..don’t expect us to ignore you because we wont..you pay your money and we put on a show...so many bands out there just ‘play’....it’s not about that, we put everything in to the point of illness....maybe that’s why it’s my last day on earth. Come down and you’ll have a damned good time, you might even get a black eye to take home with you... oh and we don’t charge you to talk to us...

Why should we come to see your live show?

First and foremost because they will probably have a great time! Our live performance is something we take great pride in and is the best way to understand what we’re like as a band. We put everything into our show and usually come off stage drenched in sweat. Basically we rock out and have a lot of fun and we love sharing that with people who take the time to check us out.

How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before?

It’s like attempting to describe what food tastes like..just go and listen to it..

FRANK TURNER

It’s been an incredible few years for Frank Turner.

When post-hardcore noiseniks Million Dead disbanded in 2005 few could have expected that their singer would, in the not too distant future, be headlining Wembley Arena and opening the 2012 Olympic ceremony. Unphased by this success, Frank remains one of the most humble and hard-working musicians the UK has to offer. We caught up with him ahead of his biggest headlining tour to date.

You got back to your hardcore roots with Mongol Horde last year, how did that feel after performing at the Olympics and headlining Wembley? Will we be seeing more?

There’s often a strong message running through your music, in an age of vacuous, disposable pop and X-factor clones do you think music can still deliver a message?

It depends what street you’re talking about. I do get reconised out and about sometimes, more often in Camden (ha), but it’s not something that bothers me, people are generally respectful and cool.

Absolutely, if it wants to. I think that people get a little overly worked up about X Factor and so on. I mean, I don’t like it much, but there’s always been crappy, disposable music out there, you just have to hack through the jungle to find the meaningful stuff. I can’t say I’m specifically trying to propogate any message in what I do, but I write autobiographically so I suppose some of my values probably come through - honesty, independence, self-reliance, consideration, things like that are important to me and I do my best to live up to those ideas.

You are set to play an ‘evening of conversation and music’ with Billy Bragg in aid of the homelessness charity ‘Shelter’ in December. Is this a cause you feel particularly strongly about?

I read somewhere that on a file sharing/torrent site, on a link to a leak of one of your albums people were still commenting that they fully intended to buy it on its release. What do you think of illegal downloads and is the popularity of micro-payment systems like Spotify better or worse for the artist?

The first thing to say is that the internet can’t be uninvented, and actually it’s overwhelmingly a force for good, on balance. It did short-circuit the business model of the music industry pretty hard, and there have been a lot of casualties because of that - most of them at the bottom of the food chain rather than the top, I should add, which is why downloading is something that I’m not totally comfortable with. That said, I think we are moving towards a different business model anyway, and it shouldn’t be too hard to reach a point where everyone, fans, musicians and behind-thescenes people alike, are happy.

It felt great. MH is kind of a release, blowing off steam, having fun for me. Not that it’s not serious, but it’s a different vibe totally from my “day job”. We are working on an album for release next year and should be touring around that too.

So, do people recognise you in the street after the Olympics appearance or is it just business as usual for Frank?

Yes, I think we live in a wealthy enough society to be able to handle the problem of homelessness one way or another, surely. It’s going to be great to be sharing the stage with Billy again as well, he’s a great guy and has been very kind to me.

What’s next for Frank in 2014?

I’m working on new material at the moment, so probably a new record at some point sooner rather than later. And more touring. Just for a change.

What can we expect from the February UK dates?

It’s the biggest headline tour I’ve ever done, so it’s kind of daunting on some levels, but it’s also exciting, I think the shows will be great, the setlist is coming together for the shows and we have an amazing support bill lined up as well.

And finally, what does Frank Turner want for Christmas?

Some peace and quiet, haha.

How do you feel that the music industry has changed much since the Million Dead days?

The impact of the internet has widened and deepened, but it’s not like MD were a band that existed entirely before all that started. I suppose live music is yet more important to the economic side of things, but that’s fine with me.

What advice would you give a young band or artist just starting out?

Make your own luck. There is so much you can do on your own, don’t wait around for things to fall in your lap or sign yourself over to dodgy “managers” or whatever, get out there and spread the word on your own. Also, creatively, be your own harshest critic, constantly look for what’s wrong with what you do and how to make it better.

We’re kicking things off on December 20th at The Rockstone where you could be Lounging Around The Christmas Tree with Southampton’s hottest girl group, The Lounge Kittens, this lovely trio performs unlikely covers in an even The Lounge Kittens more unlikely style.

Over to Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms on December 21st for Mr B The Gentleman Rapper who will be bringing the festive cheer with his banjolele and stiff upper lip and the style he likes to call ‘Chap-Hop’. Expect ditties about pipe-smoking, high society, Cricket and sexual misadventure, as well Mr B as some more well-known pieces from the world of Hip-Hop delivered in Mr B inimitable style..

If you fancy something more retro on Christmas Eve then next door at The Brook you will find the Silver Beatles Christmas Extravaganza.

Southampton’s very own fab four return to their very own ‘Cavern Club’ for a huge showcase of The Beatles’ HUGE back catalogue. These boys don’t take themselves The Silver Beatles too seriously so you can guarantee a lorra lorra laughs along the way and a great party atmosphere.

Just down the road at The Hobbit you can find the Christmas Eve Rock n Roll Revival! Get into the Christmas spirit with mulled wine & cider, free mince pies and pigs in blankets and drinks deals all night!

Post Xmas you’ll be wanting to burn off that bubble and squeek right? You only have to wait till Boxing Day for the High Tide Xmas Party at Orange Rooms- what better way to work off the Christmas Dinner than with the annual Christmas party at Orange Rooms with local hero Alan Fitzpatrick who is recognized globally as one of the most influential artists of the moment. This year with more sound, extra lighting and adding plenty of surprises to make this a party to remember. Just remember when you think Christmas is over, there’s always the Orange Alan Fitzpatrick left at the end of your stocking!

Back in Southampton on the 21st however things are a bit more rocking at The Firehouse. with live music from local heroes Western Sand, fresh from supporting Black Star Riders on their UK tour.

Friday 27th and our offerings couldn’t be more different. Over at The Cellar, Freddie & the Freeloaders, everyone’s favourite soul, motown and funk band are playing a hometown Xmas party so prepare to dance yourselves giddy. Arrive before 10pm and get a free Christmas shot!

Christmas Eve sees some proper Christmas spirit at The Talking Heads as they host the 103.9 Voice FM Fantastic Charity Xmas Party. Entry is free, all they ask is that you bring along a present to be delivered by the Voice FM DJ’S to the children’s ward at Soton General Hospital on Xmas day. The evening will be hosted by the brilliant Voice FM DJ’s with a superb selection of live bands.

If that’s not your bag then over in Bevois Valley at The Shooting Star is the Troublegum Xmas Cracker for if you like a bit more riffage in your festivities. The Troublegum DJ’s will be spinning rock, grunge and metal classics from yesteryear till the wee hours.

It’s the B I G O N E at the Orange Rooms featuring A.Skills, Orange Rooms House Band, The Daft Punks, Alex The Kidd, Maxin DJ’s and Stevo. It will be THE party of the year (and no price hikes to help you look after those valuable, hard earned pennies) Orange Rooms are offering 2-4-1 cocktails and free canapés till 10pm, plus discounted house champagne (sold by the bottle). The Talking Heads is winding the clock back to 1995 with 90’s grunge ‘supergroup’ (in fact a collective of local musicians from a variety of Southampton bands from yesteryear) AliceintheTempleofMudGarden.

After a two year hiatus Southampton’s favourite (only?) many-legged grunge tribute machine rolls back into town for your entertainment. Support comes from The Lounge Kittens – Southampton’s hottest girl group performing an unusual choice of 90s covers. Add to that Troublegum DJ’s pumping out the best rock/ alternative/industrial and party hits from doors until the wee hours and you’ve got one hell of a rock party.

6MINUTES TO SUNRISE Local lads, 6 Minutes to Sunrise are a 4 piece alternative rock band that right royally blew us away supporting Natives last month.

New single ‘My Favourite Fantasy’ is out now and the band have embarked on a full on promotional campaign to build their fanbase as they push through into 2014. Having been, in the past, forcefully removed from a Regatta due to noise levels, and haunted by recording studio ghosts, it seems there might be even more to these guys than just the wellexecuted brand of alternative pop rock we witnessed at the Joiners. Apparently members can usually be found either adding to their instrument collection or discussing the merits of DIY, however, we interrupted them recently to find out a little more….

Who’s in the band and what do you all do?

Cameron Davidson - Vocals, Guitar.

Paul Jackson - Guitar, Vocals.

Chris Griffiths - Bass, Shapes.

Chris Scott - Drums.

How would you describe the kind of music you play?

Really Fucking Loud! Alt Rock, with a strong melodic interplay with interesting stories, showcased in a massively energetic live show.

Which bands have had the biggest influence on your music?

We all grew up liking bands like Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Ash, as well as the rock melodies of bands like Pearl Jam, Feeder and Foo Fighters. We used to get compared to Biffy Clyro a lot. We like Young Guns, and we’re suckers for the big emotional vulnerable songs too. Email us, we’ll do you a play list!

You guys seem to be building momentum – is it important to you to do as many live shows as you can?

That’s where we live. As a young band, we really feel that “live” is where it shows if you have it, or not? We work really hard to put on a show, and not just play a few songs in a haphazard way. It’s also a validation of what you’re doing, seeing people enjoy what you do. It makes us feel proud that everything we’ve come through has influenced someone enough to enjoy the experience. We are building momentum, and that’s thanks to having great support from music scenes in the South, and in London where we have been blessed to play some amazing shows we’ll never forget, at some legendary venues.

You’ve recently been back in the studio. Tell us about that as an experience…..

We went to Monnow Valley in Wales to record the new single. It was a massively humbling experience. The list of people that have recorded there…..it’s basically everyone you have ever listened to and enjoyed. The live room is on the cover of an Oasis single, and there is so much history in the place, you can’t help but be touched by it. Recording in the same space as Biffy Clyro, Led Zepp, Queen, Black Sabbath to name only a few, was an unbelievable experience. We also got haunted a bit too, but that’s another story…..

What’s your favourite small venue to play in the south and why?

The Cellar, in Southampton. The stage and setup is spot on, it is really easy to connect with the crowd and put on a good show, and the sound is phenomenal. Of course being a Southampton band we have to mention the long history we have playing at The Joiners as well. We are so lucky to have some top venues, right on our doorstep.

What would you be doing if you couldn’t rock n roll?

Probably something horrible like working day jobs to try and pay the rent and bills, so we could be pursuing it in some other way.

Even if that was just writing songs, for us, that would be enough.

Music digs its way into you, so even if you couldn’t Rock n Roll, you can still live it.

Why should people check out your live show?

Because you’ll never forget it! It’s where we’re at home, and it’s what we love to do. Seeing crowds of people in a venue or from a festival stage really getting into our songs brings out the best in us. We love to spend time after gigs meeting and talking to fans, and thanking them for all the love and support 6 Minutes to Sunrise receives in person and through our social media pages.

And you’ll go home with a smile, ringing ears, and covered in sweat. And Beer...
