London based The Magic Numbers are made up of two sets of siblings, the brother /sister combo of Romeo Stodart (lead guitar, vocals) and his sister Michele (bass guitar, vocals, keyboard) as well as Angela Gannon (melodica, percussion, glockenspiel, vocals) and her brother Sean Gannon (drums). So it’s quite the talented family grouping and it’s possibly this dynamic that gives their music the delicious harmonics and beautiful tone we’re all familiar with.

because across the board record sales are down as people listen online but the shows prove that people are listening to it. So does the majority of the writing process fall to you?

Yeah I write, and my sister writes but she tends to write songs and keep them to herself!! I’m all like ‘that’s great, we can use that’ and she’s like The band quickly shot to media attention after selling out London’s ‘no, that’s mine’ haha, but that’s cool. So I take the songs to her first Kentish Town Forum solely on the strength of their loyal following, because she’s honest. When you know someone so well you know if before the release of their self-titled 2005 debut album. This record was subsequently nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. The Magic they like something or not. So I play them to her first and then we bring together the band and everyone chips in on the arrangements. Angela Numbers went on to become one of the nation’s best-loved bands wrote her first song on this album. She came to me with the song Black and have shared stages with the likes of Brian Wilson, The Flaming Lips, The Who, Morrissey, U2 and Bright Eyes to name a few. Rose and it’s one of my favourites on there. It’s quite a heavy song, her Mum passed away after she was born so she never knew her Mum so After a short sharp rise to prominence, over a million records sold it was quite a cathartic thing writing about it. I would love her to write and several worldwide tours, things went a little quiet for the quartet. more. Romeo started a family, Michele released a solo country-inspired album and work slowly started on their current release, ALIAS. But You’ve become a Dad, do you think that’s had an effect on your it’s official, they are BACK and they’re coming to Southampton for music? a Christmas hoe down so we thought we’d have a little chat with Romeo to find out why they’ve kept us waiting so long! It’s kind of the biggest, most inspiring thing that’s happened to me. Even prior to it happening, when you find out, you start questioning You’ve been away for a little while, what’s been going on? everything in life and your role in it and the fears of being a good Father and bringing someone new into this crazy world we live in. I think just Michele, my sister, made a solo album and I became a Dad. Really growing up and getting older, there’s an acknowledgement of where loving that. We built a better studio and we’ve been busy doing lots you fit in and coming to terms with yourself and I think that is even of music. I’ve been playing for Spiritualized, playing guitar and banjo more advanced now after becoming a Dad. but with The Magic Numbers I wanted to wait until we had the best bunch of songs together. We’re four albums in and I didn’t want to Do you think having two sets of siblings in the band contributes to go out feeling like we were just repeating what we’d done before, your sound? I really wanted to push it and when I felt those songs were there I got everyone together again and hoped that we would still feel that I think definitely in terms of creativity there’s an instinctive thing that energy when we played. I’m really thankful for that and it’s really happens. And with the vocals, I think it’s more apparent to others, exciting again. I feel really confident with this new bunch of songs. I guess cos I’m in it I can’t see it as much but sometimes when I’m listening I can’t tell if it’s me or my sister. The family thing in the band is Alias came out in the summer, how has it been received? definitely an asset. I can’t imagine being in a band with anyone else. It’s been cool. I can’t lie and say I haven’t read the reviews, I have to, So after you broke big, was there lots of pressure to maintain the level and some of the reviews are really good and the tour’s been great. of momentum that you had? It’s been really great seeing everyone singing along to all the songs. I don’t know if the audience can sense the extra energy from playing I think because I was playing music for a long time before The Magic the new ones and want to be a part of it. It’s still tough out there in terms of I don’t know any more how you judge how things are going Numbers, when it all happened I felt like it had been a long time

THE MAGIC NUMBERS

coming but at the same time it all snowballed and happened really quickly. Lots of dreams were coming true and all these amazing experiences but the thing is for me, I loved it, don’t get me wrong, but the main thing with being in the limelight was feeling that this was what you wanted. It was like going to a party. Some people get to a party and stand in the middle of the room all ‘yeah, look at me’ and I guess we were at the party but in the corner of the room in the shadows, hiding and wondering if we should be there. So there was a definite sense of stepping back from it and taking a break and reassessing. I mean, I want it to be a big thing in terms of getting the music across but I want it to be a journey for myself too. It’s gotta be your own soul searching path. So that’s kind of what I learnt from it all and I guess the pressure I put on myself was to be better and more true. It’s a good question because it’s something I think about a lot because at the time I found myself when people were so into it and all the happy songs, I felt like people were focussing on the wrong thing, although the thing they focussed on was what was making us successful. So it’s a funny one, but there you go!

You’re bringing some friends out to support you on this run of shows, can you tell us a little bit about Ren Harvieu and The Goat Roper Rodeo Band?

Do you have a favourite show you’ve ever played?

Lots of touring. And making Ren’s album. Tonnes more touring. Hopefully going to America. And I’ve been writing loads so hopefully we’ll bring something out sooner but the album only came out in September so we’re going to try and do as much to try and get this record across first.

There have been amazing big shows like the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury and things but the one that’s always stayed with me was playing Borderline in London which was just a 300 capacity venue but we hadn’t had any records out, we’d just been playing live. And this was pre-internet and file sharing and people would only have known those songs from the gigs and there we were playing them and people were singing along and I was like ‘holy shit’. I’ll always remember that feeling and I still feel that y’know, when you go in front of people and they get it, it’s a heart-warming thing. So there was a frisson in the air? People felt like they were discovering something new? Yeah, it really was like that in those days. It was just from gigging and it was a word of mouth thing and it’s kind of sad in a way that today you can’t really do that now. If you go and see a new band now and you go home and look them up, they’ve got all their photos and Youtube videos and five different versions of each song and it’s all there. You don’t get to sit there wondering when you’ll get to see them again and hear those songs again, it’s all just there.

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | DECEMBER 2014

We toured the UK earlier this year with them when we were threatening to get back together. The Goat Roper Rodeo Band are a 3 piece from North Wales, two brothers and their best friend and I fell in love with them straight away. They can really harmonise, it’s real old school kind of country blues. I’ve been producing their record which is cool so I’m going to make their first album in our studio. I think it’s just a matter of time for them. And I’ve been writing songs with Ren for a while. She made her first album and then had an awful accident where she broke her spine and didn’t know whether she would walk again. It took her a while to get back and we’ve become really good friends and started writing songs for the album and she’s all ready to go again. She’s got the most amazing voice, like a female Roy Orbison. We all did this acoustic tour last year and I really like those small shows and that’s how we wanted to run up into Christmas. What’s on the agenda for 2015?

Now that you’re a family man do you approach touring any differently? Yeah, I look at trying to get him out to see me and try to break it up more. This year was hard because there was a lot of touring and I missed him a lot. But after we’ve finished touring with this album there’ll be a big break and I’ll be back there building puzzles and watching Peppa Pig! And finally, what can Southampton expect from your show in December? There’s gonna be a lot of new songs from this record but we’ve done a lot of new arrangements of the older songs so they’ll sound fresh. We’re gonna get Ren up and the Goats and do different songs, it’ll be ramshackle in places but just a good rocking show really. I hope that people leave feeling like it’s Christmas! THE MAGIC NUMBERS

FEATURE

Formed in January 2012 by five lost boys living in Southampton that bonded over a love of Roger Daltrey, broken guitars and Lurhmann’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ Dead describe themselves as ‘what would happen if Tarantino and Shakespeare started a band....’ Their particular brand of post punk rock has struck a chord with the teens, tweens and youth of the city and far beyond. Earlier this year they took to the stage at Takedown Festival to the cries of ‘Dead! Dead! We are Dead!’ and we saw exactly why the screaming fans were excited. Their well-crafted songs are catchy as all hell with singalong choruses and rousing riffs galore. You can’t really help but be dragged into the mix. This band works hard. They understand the value of selfpromotion and they can always be found out amongst the crowds, getting involved, meeting the fans and generally being all round nice guys. Things are starting to move for them as we approach the New Year and perhaps 2015 will be the right time to launch them into the musical stratosphere. We certainly hope so. But before all that, they’re coming home for Christmas and throwing us a huge party so we caught up with lead guitarist (and total hottie, I’m sure you agree, ladies) Sam Matlock for a bit of a catch up…

You guys work hard at promoting yourselves, what do you think is the most effective self-promotion bands can do? You really have to be going full throttle across the board, but bands do tend to rely too heavily on online these days. Print and Radio are still great promotion. Always push for local radio slots and local reviews, but to be honest flyering at big tours is the most effective way. Nothing is as convincing as being face to face with a music fan with your own passion as a weapon. What do you think are the hardest challenges facing up and coming bands? Money. Financially it’s really difficult for all artists at the moment - we have a fanbase that’s very into merchandise and that’s probably the only thing that enables us to move forward like we do. You just have to be willing to tighten your belt and make a few losses to build (essentially) a small business, and build something you want to spend the rest of your life working on.

You played Nightmare Festival recently, how was that?

You seem to be teetering on the edge of taking things to the next level, what’s on the agenda for 2015?

Well we always have a killer time at Camden Rocks, and basically anything Chris McCormack is involved with, so it was an honour to be part of Nightmare festival in its first year. We’re still new to the festival scene - hopefully we can grow up with Nightmare.

Haha, we certainly hope so! We’re going to be releasing some new music, some more videos, lots of live dates. It’s just going to be a year to sink our teeth into what Dead! really is, what we can create and how we can show that off to as many people as humanly possible.

You played multiple sets, was that your choice?

Who are your favourite bands at the moment?

Haha! Sort of. We were booked to play the Barfly, and then headline the Blackheart later that night, we thought it would be a cool way to crack out some old songs for dedicated fans. Then we heard Elliot Minor were doing 3 sets in two days and thought – f*ck it, let’s add an acoustic show in and beat them in one day.

Personally I’m loving There Is Only You by The Xcerts, there hasn’t been an album of this calibre for a long time. Alex keeps playing Night Verses in the van, they sound sick but we don’t want to admit that he was right haha. We also went to see Frnk Lero and the Celebration at the barfly the other night. Something very Titus Andronicus about his new sound, definitely a fan.

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | DECEMBER 2014

DEAD!

Do you have any pre or post show rituals? Vocal warm ups for about an hour to quell the voice paranoia...... we all do our own thing, have a beer outside. I think it’s more of a mental thing. Post show we always discuss what went well and what went wrong in the van after the show so we can fix it for the next day. Most of the evening is spent at the merch desk talking to fans so that gets you really hyped, then helps you come down either side of the actual playing.

You formed the band in Southampton, are you excited for a homecoming show? Oh man, there aren’t even words. I can’t remember the last time we actually had a mediocre Southampton show. In fact we’ve barely ever had anything less than 10/10 Southampton gigs, especially recently. This Christmas is going to be off the hook and we can’t think of a better way to end the year. Plus we get to show off a bunch of new songs....

Do you have lucky pants?

What are your three favourite things about Southampton (and your three least favourite!)?

If you don’t change them all tour do they become lucky? Because then yes, we each have a few pairs of lucky pants

Good: Students, Venues, Friends + The Hobbit Bad: Students, Venues, when The Hobbit closes before we load out.

What’s your favourite song to play live and why?

Words: Zan Lawther

I’d say ‘Alaska’ because it’s actually easy and enjoyable to play in terms of backing vocals and guitars, but opening track ‘We Are Dead’ is my favourite. It just feels like the easiest way for music fans to understand what we’re about and that really excites me. Even if it is a pain in the arse to play haha!

Catch DEAD live @ the Joiners December 23rd www.facebook.com/StayClassyStayDead

You released your first single in August (Phantom – go check it out!), are there plans for an album? Well we kind of live in a singles market these days, but we’ve been demoing so much that we must have enough new material for a couple of new albums by now! I suppose only time will tell...

If you were to have a rap battle, which famous rapper would you chose to rap against? I’d probably choose MC Skat Cat, he’s already at a disadvantage by just being a cartoon, and I know that Paula Abdul has already kicked his arse rap battle wise. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever posted on a social media site? Once I had a giant cigarette lighter, so I posted a picture of me holding it and said that it was my baby’s first lighter. I got more likes than disapproving comments, go figure. Have you ever been stuck in a piece of clothing? (Skinny jeans etc.) I get stuck in my skinny jeans all the time, some times I even have to talc myself into them. I once pulled a muscle in my shoulder blade taking my coat off too. If you could breed 2 animals together and defy the laws of nature, what would you create? I’d like to breed a dog and a fly together, that way it could star in its own film, maybe the dog would be a championship frisbee catcher like air bud or something, because he’d have wings and stuff, but he also has the ability to dissolve people’s limbs by being sick on them, should the need arise. What made you guys decide to reform and produce music again? The complete and utter lack of decent bands around at the moment. Well there are some good ones, but there’s a lot more worse ones.

If you were Captain of a Ship, what would you name it? The Wet Bandit What would your band name be if I gave you these 5 words to create the name (Darling, Horses, Princess, Riot, Shamble) Princess Shamble Darling and the Riot Horses When was the last time you ate a home-grown vegetable? I’ve got a chilli plant, does that count? If you could only read a bird watching magazine, a train spotting magazine or a fishing magazine for the rest of your life, which would you chose? Definitely a train spotting magazine, the others are really lame and boring. All the cool kids spot trains. You can pick four people to form a band to cover your songs, but they must all be called John. What Johns would you have in your band? John Bonham, John Travolta, Jon Bon Jovi, John Craven (Countryfile) So, now you’re back in action, what can your fans expect to see from you in 2015? We’re playing Hellfest, and might even have a few tasty morsels song wise to get out there. See you on tour!

In February 2014 Southampton’s own sassy songstresses The Lounge Kittens released their hilarious video of a cover of Rollin’ by Limp Bizkit to the internet. Picked up from Twitter by the one and only Fred Durst it now has over 250k views on YouTube and has been posted in over 45 different countries. The follow up video, a fantastically funny (and creepy!) tango version of Aerosmith’s I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing saw the Kittens featured by MetalHammer, Team Rock, Kerrang, Classic Rock and numerous other sites and their most recent offering, a tongue in cheek version of Slipknot’s Duality, earned them a big thumbs up from frontman Corey Taylor but set off such a trollercoaster that the internet hasn’t been the same since. Throughout the summer the girls packed up their sequins (and their wellies!) and took their 3 part harmony alt-lounge act to some of the UK’s biggest festivals such as Glastonbury (6 shows in 5 venues in 2 days, no less), BoomTown, Beautiful Days and perhaps most notably… Sonisphere, where the laaaadiiieees were personally invited by Fred Durst to open Limp Bizkit’s set on the main stage (to a whopping 40,000 people), after he’d seen them play earlier that day. And these girls keep on rollin. In March 2015 they’re off on tour with the bad boys of heavy metal Steel Panther (and ragga-metal heroes Skindred too!). So how does it feel to be an internet sensation, to be playing alongside massive bands and be mates with Fred Durst? We caught up with Jen (Red Kitten), Timia (Blue Kitten) and Zan (Pink Kitten) to ask exactly that… How does it feel to be an internet sensation worldwide, all of a sudden? Jen: It is very strange to type in your name into Google or Youtube and see so many articles, pictures and videos come up! Quite a lot of the time I don’t really think about it, and then every so often I’ll get a pang of ‘WHAT?! Did that actually happen??’ It’s still incredibly surreal to think of us Kittens being an internet sensation, especially when the internet can be such a cut throat part of the industry. This doesn’t mean that it’s all been sunshine and rainbows, we’ve certainly had a lot of ‘internet trolls’ give us a hard time about our work, but the good completely outshines the bad - we have made so many wonderful fans (as well as meeting quite a few of them at the various shows we’ve played) who support us completely and we are extremely grateful. How do you go about choosing the songs you cover? Timia: It varies. Generally speaking, we pick a song we already really like - if it ever looks like we’re taking the piss, we are also taking the piss out of ourselves, because we’re fans of the artists we cover. If Jen or I have chosen a song, we’ll arrange our own ideas. If Zan has come up with a suggestion, we decide between us who will have a stab at arranging it. Zan has made the call on some of our most popular songs, she’s definitely got the ear! As a group, we’re all developing an ear for a good Kitten tune though, sometimes we think a song is going to work well but it turns out that it doesn’t translate when we start the ‘kittenizing’ process. We’ve had moments where we’ve been in the car together or in a club and a tune has come on and we’ve all looked at each other at the same time with the ‘you know what I’m thinking’ face. That was certainly the case with our next release. [new video due out 3 December]

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | DECEMBER 2014

Are you actually mates with Limp Bizkit now? Zan: Haha……we cannot thank Bizkit enough for the support they’ve shown us and they were all absolutely lovely to us at Sonisphere. First and foremost, we’re all massive fans of theirs so just getting the chance to meet them and watch their show was amazing in itself, but then finding out they’ve seen our video and having Fred turn up to our Rock Royalty show was frankly a bit ridiculous. We cannot wait to meet Steel Panther. It’s all hugely surreal. What’s the best thing about being a Lounge Kitten? Timia: For me, making people laugh is really satisfying. Getting a room full of people to sing along, dance, jump, and smile with us like we’re all in on the joke together feels really ace. Getting to do that with my best friends is the icing on a massive cake, this band is so much fun to be in. But we work very hard, so we really EARN the fun that Lounge Kittens can be. We push ourselves too, so while it’s gruelling to write and rehearse the hours that we do, it’s all just steps to mastering our craft and making those arrangements stronger, the performance slicker and our chemistry as scintillating as possible! What’s the worst thing about being a Lounge Kitten? Jen: Having to be a bit more presentable... I can’t avoid showers when I have a gig coming up... But seriously, knowing that I can’t be a Lounge Kitten every day is the worst thing. When you get so excited about being a part of a project, but you can’t devote ALL of your time to it can get frustrating sometimes! Where can we see Lounge Kittens perform next? Zan: We’re hugely excited about our Christmas Cabaret show this month. We’re working with another great Southampton band, Freddie & the Freeloaders, on what will be our first EVER performance with a full band, so it’s really challenging us to adapt our arrangements. We’ve got a handful of other shows coming up too but really we’re focussing on preparing for our tour with Steel Panther. Next stop….Wembley! Is that actually happening!?! Words: Kai Harris
