Southampton prepares itself to welcome back the fabulous Mr Scruff this month when he hits RoXX on the 15th. DJ, Producer, Cartoonist and Lover of Tea (he even has his own tea company and his very own tea shop in Manchester!) he plays music from across the board, including Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, Jazz, Reggae, Dubstep, Latin, African, Ska, Disco, House, Funk, Breaks, Soundtracks & loads more. As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek and good humour. You’ll also notice his childlike cartoon drawings that illustrate everything that is Mr Scruff… You started in the early 90’s making pause-button mix tapes…..things have changed a LOT since then. Obviously you must embrace the technological changes, but are you nostalgic about simpler times? Back in the early to mid ‘80’s, most bedroom DJs had to make do with bits of cheap home hi-fi & a mixer from Tandy. The pause-button tapes took a long time, but made you plan ahead a bit, as you couldn’t really go back & change anything. I try and hold onto that decisive & simple approach nowadays. You’ve stated in the past “the most important skill for a DJ is to play great records in the right order” – do you think this is a skill being lost or enhanced as audience’s attention spans get shorter and the ‘mash up’ becomes more prominent on the dance floor? Digital DJ software makes it easier to get the next record on a lot quicker, which is sometimes good and often bad. I like playing records all the way through, but overall the main skill of ‘programming’ i.e. telling a story with each piece of music as a word or punctuation mark within that story, is the same, whether you play tunes and leave gaps, use a microphone, or get crazy technical and play several tunes at once. When did you start drawing characters from your Mr Scruff world (was it something you did as a kid, or was it something you started for Mr Scruff)? I was 15 when I started those cartoons and they haven’t changed a lot since then. It just made sense to illustrate my music in that style, especially since I have a kind of cartoon name. Do you prefer playing club shows or festivals? No preference, I really enjoy the variety. Indoors/ outdoors/massive/ intimate, they all have a part to play.

Having started working from his bedroom in the 80’s, building his sound through regular bar gigs and radio in the 90’s and releasing the hugely successful ‘Keep It Unreal’ album in 1999, which spawned his residency show and following it up with ‘Trouser Jazz’ in 2002, Mr Scruff is now kept hugely busy making music, making tea and entertaining the masses with his unique blend of beats and charming weirdness. We met up with the man himself to ask him some appropriately silly questions.
You’re doing a MASSIVE 5 hour set in Southampton…..is that fairly standard for you? It must allow you to shape the evening somewhat. I play for the full night at most gigs, as I really enjoy people watching and creating a mood from the moment the doors open. It is nice to play without having to miss anything out due to time restrictions. Can you speak whale? I wish! I am not big enough, and I can only hold my breath for about 30 seconds. Do you eat fish and if so, how do you like it cooked? Yes, and I like it cooked well. No preference, variety is the spice of life. What’s your favourite tea (drink)? And do you have a favourite dunking biscuit? As above, any decent tea will do; black/green/herbal etc. No biscuits but a good Assam with a slice of fruit cake and Wensleydale cheese is a winning combination. And finally, are you a bit of a scruff or do you like to dress up once in a while? I am generally slightly creased, but have been known to wield an iron on occasion.

MR SCRUFF
FEATURE
Turisas were forged waaay back in 1997 in a dark cave (probably) somewhere in Hämeenlinna, Finland. The sound of their music is encapsulated completely in the title of their 2004 album BATTLE METAL and is a mixture of folk, metal and symphonic elements shrouded in Finnish folklore. With many line up changes over the years, it’s been a long and arduous road for the two remaining original members, Mathias Nygård and Jussi Wickström, however this band have never faltered in their quest to spread their unique brand of folk metal across the lands. We caught up with Mathias Nygård ahead of their Talking Heads show on Feb 22 to discuss all things battle metal!. You guys have managed to sustain your success for over a decade now – why do you think that is? From the very beginning, we’ve simply done what feels interesting, inspiring and exciting to ourselves and not cared too much about what’s popular or what people expect us to do or to be. We are a unique band, at the same time high-standard and entertaining. And our live shows are amazing. What are the main challenges you have faced? When we started out we could do anything because no-one expected anything from us. We didn’t have to try to live up to anything, but just do what we felt, which then became ”our own thing”. Year by year more and more people seem to have an opinion about what the band is about and what we should or should not be doing. Over the years we’ve stayed true to ourselves by doing first and foremost what we personally wanted to do. Playing in a band has to be inspiring to ourselves, or otherwise the band will soon become very uninspiring to our fans too. Has it been hard dealing with the number of changes to the line up of the band? Sometimes. I think that we have grown used to it to an extent. Of course it would have been lovely to be the band that has had the same lineup since the first demo and known each other since kids. But that was never available to us, so we have had to deal with situations as they come. It’s not like we actively want to change people in the band. Every change has also brought something new and good to the band, and I actually kind of like that just as the band’s music, image and most things with Turisas, also the lineup is going through an evolution and every lineup has had a slightly different vibe. Without lineup changes, we would never have had Olli playing the violin, or an accordion – both guy and girl. I’ve loved every lineup, and I’m happy and priviledged to have had the opportunity of having all these great musicians in my band to share the stage with as well as our lives on the road, even if only for a couple of years. Where did you find the inspiration for the crossover of metal and folk? As a teenager I was listening a lot to metal, but also very fascinated by history and folklore, so the combination happened quite naturally. Bands such as Amporphis, Sepultura, Einherjer and Bal-Sagoth contributed. Your onstage look is pretty dramatic. How did the face painting thing come about? When we started out there wasn’t anything like a folk metal scene there is nowadays. So we actually felt that we came from a black metal background, because that was what we listened to. It sounds funny now, because we’re so far apart from that nowadays. Anyway, back then all the visual side of black metal with corpse paint etc was still strong and we wanted to keep that, but felt already then that our music was different and that we should change the look from the cold blackmetal aesthetics to something more “earthy” to fit our music. So

first we just had dirt and some splatters of blood, but then year by year, it just very naturally became thicker and thicker and ended up being the red and black facepaint that we’re known for today. As we’ve evolved musically album by album, we’ve also wanted our look and costumes to evolve in the same way to suit the music and the themes. Who knows what the future will bring. Do you like the fact that the crowd gets involved with the visual side of things, dressing up and brandishing their (plastic) swords? We have some very entusiastic fans, and of course it feels great for us and flattering when we see black and red in clothes and faces in the line-up and the crowd – people showing their colours, and no question about who they’ve come to see! There’s always some fans that go even further, but also people who just come to enjoy the show as they are. Everything and everybody is welcome. Do you think your image means some people might take your music less seriously? Does that matter to you? It’s always easier to ridicule something that isn’t exactly grey and boring. But what’s more ridiculous than something or someone who’s trying to keep up an image of seriousness? Everyone who digs a bit deeper into our music, lyrics and contents will agree that we are without a question a serious band of serious musicians and artists. Serious as in of high standard, but not serious serious. Whoever thinks we’re a funny-clad band with songs mainly about beer and swords... well that’s their loss. But I’m sure they can have a bloody awesome time at our gigs too! Do you prefer playing festivals or headline shows? I wouldn’t like to skip either. At festivals you get to play to large crowds, have a great time, hang out a little yourself if you’re lucky and meet friends in other bands. At headline shows everything’s much more intimate, and the crowd is likely to know your material better, also the more obscure stuff. Towards the end of the summer you start missing the comfort and peace of the tour bus, and in late spring you can’t wait to get out and party at all the festivals. Which band would you most like to tour with and why? Iron Maiden for the exposure, Björk for the artistic pleasure. Maybe Muse could work as some sort of a compromise. How would you explain, to someone who has never experienced Turisas before, what Battle Metal is and why should they come check out your show? We’re one of the leading bands is a genre called Folk Metal and Battle Metal is our own unique branding on that. We blend rock, metal, pop and prog with symphonic elements and soundtrackish epicness and Nordic, Eastern European and even Mid-Eastern folk music. Our live shows are high-energy, high-atmosphere and high-intensity events that you will not forget. At the same time it is highly entertaining as it is a high quality musical performance with a lot of theatrics involved. You don’t have to know anything about metal to enjoy it. It’s been an exciting ride so far for the Defiled. Formed in 2005, their first tour entitled “The Black Death Tour” climaxed in a sold out London show at the Underworld. With a series of sought-after demos trading between fans, their first EP was released in 2009, with their full album Grave Times for free, in the January issue of Metal Hammer. The Deluxe edition of the album which was released in February 2011 had more preorders than both Rob Zombie and Foo Fighters!! The Defiled headlined the Jagermeister stage at Sonisphere 2011 and opened the main stage at Bloodstock Open Air which lead to them being nominated for the Best New British Band award in the Metal Hammer 2011 Golden Gods awards. In 2012 The Defiled opened for the Jägermeister Music tour at the Brixton Academy, supporting Black Spiders, Therapy? and Skindred and performed at South By South West in a Metal Hammer Showcase, as well Download Festival. In June 2012 they WON Best New Band at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods awards. Aptly described by Kerrang! as “an explosive mangle of Manson stagecraft and middle finger metal” after catching The Defiled at Takedown 2013 it’s fair to say they pretty much blew us away. An all-encompassing live performance accompanies their powerhouse metal riffs, sing/scream combined vocals and underlying electronic elements which all come together to give the band’s sound a certain heavy groove and a more melodic tone. And now they’re back in Southampton and about to set the Talking Heads alight. We caught up with frontman Stitch D to find out a bit more….. So, Daggers has been well received – how have you found the reaction from the fans and from the industry? It’s been amazing, so far we haven’t found one terrible review which is nice! The fans have also been very supportive of it too! We feel very honoured.
Are The Defiled a crazy band on tour or have you settled down now you’ve been doing it for so long? We still haven’t settled down yet, we all like a drink...which ends up being every day when you’re on tour....the AvD takes it to another level though! Total animal! Haha!
How do you think your sound has evolved with Daggers? I don’t think it has evolved too much, just a continuation on from our last record grave times but I think the songs are more precise and to the point...we waffled on a bit on Grave Times. This record is just better in our opinion...better production and we hope better songwriting.
Who’s been your favourite band to tour with and why? It’s probably Dragonforce...those dudes were so lovely and accommodating and really like to party...there was no rockstar bullshit with them! We hung out every night and we still hang out now.
You guys all live in different countries, explain to us how your writing process works now. All songs start with myself writing the guitars, bass and drums and some vocal lines and then that gets handed over to the AvD to work his electronic magic. Me and him both then get together to finalize singing lines and lyrics. So being in different countries hasn’t affected us much so far.
What’s your favourite song to play live? Probably As I Drown...it’s just a fun bouncy song, easy to play and easy to sing.
Do you miss each other when you’re all at home? Maybe...to be honest we haven’t had much time off over the past year so when we are at home we barely see any other human beings at all apart from our wives and girlfriends. We are around each other 24/7 when we are on tour so a break is good once in a while. Does that mean you feel an extra pull to party when you all actually get in the same room together? Yep...the first day we meet again before a tour generally ends up being a bender!
If you could be in any band ever who would you be in? Foo Fighters - they’ve been in my life forever and I still get excited when they release a record...Grohl is God!

James Willard (Guitar) When life hands you lemons, what do you do? Make pancakes! If you HAD to cover a Madonna song, which one would it be? ‘Ray of light’ I guess. Mainly so I could do a spoof of the video. Who in the band would make the best girl? Ha ha, probably me?! I’m a bit of a tart, I like to look after myself and I spend the most time on my hair. Mind you I’d make a pretty hairy chested lady! If each of the band was a flavour, what would they be? Robs would be banana and peanut butter, Rich Cornish pasty, Yiannis would be Haggis with a touch of tzatziki, Alex definitely Yorkshire Tea and I’d probably be Eggs and Bacon. What’s your favourite song to play live? It changes, depending on the stage sound and audiences. But generally speaking I think we all love playing I See Red, Revolution and To Be Alive. Do any of you snore? YES! I think we have all snored at one point, but Yiannis, Rich, and I are probably the worst. It’s so funny, Yiannis is definitely the most consistent but until about year ago he was still in utter denial. He also gets really pissed off if anyone else does as he’s a light sleeper! It’s basically a race to get to sleep before him. What do you want to be when you grow up? I have no intention of ever growing up, so N/A. If you couldn’t be called Brother & Bones what would you be called? The Rolling Stones. If you were putting together your dream festival line up, who would be on it? Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stoneage, Kings of Leon, Jimi Hendrix, Stereophonics, The Police, Incubus, Band of Skulls, Paul Simon (doing Graceland), Ben Howard, Rage Against the Machine, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Nirvana, Friendly Fires, Audioslave, Lenny Kravitz, The Black Keys, Jeff Buckley, Johnny Cash, Bob Marley, Coldplay, Ray Charles, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Michael Jackson, John Mayer Trio, Oasis. Wow I f**king love my festival!! Who would win in a fight, a walrus with a cricket bat or a hippo with a flick knife? Well a hippo would have the most mobility so I reckon could bob and weave out the way of the walrus’ attacks. I’m going with the Hippo. Gold or silver? Silver, it looks cleaner and understated. SEASONS IN WRECKAGE
This Portsmouth based 5 piece melodic hardcore band formed in late 2011 and have already bagged themselves support slots with Heart In Hand, Silent Screams, Senses Fail, Odessa, Napoleon and many others. They released their debut music video in November 2012 which has had a whopping 60,000 views on Youtube, proving them popular with fans. After going through several line-up changes, Seasons eventually headed back up to Studio 6 in August 2013 to record their debut EP that released in November 2013 along with a new music video for the song “Above The Trees” and they make their first Takedown appearance this year.

Top of the alternative rock heap in Southampton, 6 Minutes to Sunrise have quite frankly been busting their balls to make 2014 their biggest year yet. Having supported a whole load of previous Takedown bands in 2013 such as Natives, Max Raptor and We Are Fiction we can’t wait to see what they bring to the table. With recent single release ‘My Favourite Fantasy’ recorded at the hallowed (and some say, haunted) Monnow Valley Studios making waves across the south it seems there might be even more to these guys than just the well-executed brand of alternative pop punk they are known for. Ugly Love create rock music for the weird and horny. Hailing from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, the 4 piece band came together after watching hundreds of bands making failed attempts at taking on the world to inject some well needed fun, colour, charm, energy and excitement into the heart of their beloved alternative scene. Since releasing their debut EP last year, Ugly Love have played with bands such as Lost Alone, Blitz Kids, Fearless Vampire Killers and Black Light Burns (Wes Borland, Limp Bizkit), they appeared at Soccer Six 2013 and received exposure via Kerrang! Magazine and BBC Introducing. This month they release their debut single (Produced by Tommy Gleeson, formally of Slaves To Gravity) and embark on a run of headline shows. Former Black Grape singer, Kermit, will be coming to Southampton on February 15th to perform at a charity event raising money for Strummerville, the music foundation set up to remember Joe Strummer. The all day event will see Kermit, real name Paul Leveridge, make a rare appearance on the south coast. He’ll be performing a spoken word set at the event which will be showcasing an array of upcoming talent from Southampton, Bournemouth, Portsmouth the Isle of Wight and London. There will be live music, live art, poetry, an acoustic stage and there will even be a mini-Strummerville campfire at the rear of the venue. The event will see over 15 acts performing throughout the day between 1pm and 1am. Covering a wide range of genres from punk to ska to hip hop and folk, on the bill are the likes of Accrington Stanley, Tim OT, Chemical Threat, August Riots, Rex Domino, BullyBones, The Flying Alexanders and many more.
Did Joe ever hear your poetry? Unfortunately, Joe never got to hear my poems, but I know he would have dug them. Any memories of playing Southampton? I can’t remember the last time I was in Southampton, but I’ve definitely played there. My memory from that certain period is short. So, what have you been up to? I’m totally immersed in a myriad of really exciting projects at the moment. I’m now in a band called Blind Arcade that I’ve put together with an awesome producer called EVM128. We are in the studio right now, finishing our album with Greg WIlson, who’s producing it. Anything else? Lots. I’m doing a lot of art collaboration with sculptures and jewellers, dress makers and artists. I have a graphic novel out this year called “Lies and Other Fools” with an artist called Mal Earl as well as writing a film script. 2014 is going to be busy then? Yes it is! I’m also working on a music project called “Footprint” that involves a lot of really cool people. It’s a concept album where different musicians/singers will leave their ‘footprint’ on the tracks; I’m really excited about this. But the biggest thing that’s happening in my personal life is, in March, I’m due to become a daddy again; our world is going to be a noisy, laughter-filled, crazy, exciting adventure for her to come into. The Strummerville Benefit gig takes place at The Joiners on Saturday, February 15th. Tickets cost £7 in advance and doors open at 1pm. (There will be concessions available to students, low waged and unemployed).

What brings you to Southampton? Joe was a good friend of mine. We would talk about religion, music, dogs and cats. Anything really. So, being asked to perform my poetry for the Strummerville foundation is kinda like performing in front of Joe himself to me. Because of the connection with Joe and Strummerville, I know Joe would have been the first person to say “Of course, try something new, go for whatever you want to do in life”.
