South coast rock trio Band of Skulls have been around for a while, forming officially whilst all at college together, although Russell and Matt had been friends since school. Hailing originally from Southampton the band have spent the 6 years or so of their music career so far relentlessly touring and enchanting fans around the world. And injecting their music into as many media avenues as possible along the way. They’ve had their songs featured in numerous commercials (Ford Mustang, Swatch), movie trailers (The Hangover Part II), on TV and film movie soundtracks (The Twilight Saga) and even
in video games (FIFA, Gran Turismo, Tony Hawk, Guitar Hero). And the impressive list goes on and on. They even had a TV documentary broadcast about them by Channel 4 in 2012. That’s one hell of a set of credentials.
Describe Band of Skulls in 5 words Erm, rock....n roll band? [It could be 5 adjectives..?] Umm okay... no, rock n roll band sums us up pretty well.
Himalayan, as it embodies everything about what we’re doing at the moment. No doubt it’s going to change at some point.
What’s been your favourite festival this summer? Well they all have their own identities but the two special ones for us were Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds. We all went to these festivals and others as kids and have fond memories. I remember watching some of my favourite bands and remember the feeling of thinking ‘man, I wonder what it’s like to be up there on that stage, playing to all these people?’ A kid in the crowd one day and then the next we’re playing them ourselves. How was Reading & Leeds for you? It was GREAT. Reading & Leeds is the finale of the UK festival season for us. We’ve been relentlessly touring all year, it’s now nice to be able to take a few weeks off and recharge, although we do have a festival to play in Madrid in a couple of weeks and then we’re off to Los Angeles to play a show there too. You’ve spent a lot of time in America this year, is it important to you to make an impact across the pond? It was important to us when we started for sure. It’s so big in the US, everything is so big, it’s like lots of different countries. Every state has its own radio stations, TV shows etc. so it does feel like going from one country to another. Some bands spend a long time playing in the UK and then go visit the US, we did it the other way round. How did going to the US begin so early on for you guys? We’ve always been an independent band, mostly self funded but we have ‘business partners’, people based in LA [label], in London and in Montreal who have helped fund us, so from early on we went to the US - did it DIY - a tin can van, drive 10 hours, play a show, drive another 10 hours, play a show. It started off small, and now is much bigger - it’s nice to see the transition in the size of shows from then to now.
After an extremely busy summer Band of Skulls return home on the 8th November to play a show in The Guildhall as part of a 13 date UK tour, so we thought we’d have a little chat with drummer Matt Hayward to find out what some of his favourite things are and who he’d have in his very own ‘super group’. Read on rock lovers…
You’re asked to put together a ‘super group’, who’s in yours and what would you be called? I’d have Buddy Miles on drums. He played with Jimi Hendrix for a while and is an amazing character. I think Josh Homme would be in there too, hmm, playing on bass. He’s pretty damn good at it. I’d have Wayne Coyne from The Flaming Lips on guitar and doing vocals. What would you do if Buddy’s on drums though...? Oh I’ll work the lights, or be their roadie and just carry all their gear and set up the stage. Or I could operate the smoke machine! The band would be called Buddy and The Flaming Queens. Haha. If you could collaborate on a new song with any person dead or alive, who would that be? We’ve never really collaborated with anyone else before....hmm that’s a tricky one. I’d really like to have a jam with Jimi Hendrix though, that would be awesome. What do you think has been the defining point of your career so far? Or maybe it hasn’t happened yet? We don’t like to look at things like that. We’re always moving forward and not looking back, we’re about the future and what that brings. What would be inscribed on the band’s memorial? That’s a bit morbid. Not in a macabre, dead way. In a celebratory, happy kind of way. Something for people to remember you fondly. That’s all folks! Ah, you’re a cartoon fan? Isn’t everyone?
Your new album ‘Himalayan’ came out this summer, how has it been received? Really great. I think there’s always a level of apprehension before any album release - not being sure how people are going to take to it, but it’s been amazing. Everyone’s been singing along with us at every show in every country. We’ve been dead chuffed about it.
So what comes next for you guys? Well we’re constantly looking to visit places we’ve never been before. We haven’t been to South America as yet so we’re keen to go there. We just love making records and playing shows. It’s very cliché I know but we just want to keep doing what we’re doing - playing as many shows as possible, in as many places as possible, making music that people enjoy. We’re very simple.
What’s your personal favourite Band of Skulls track? It’s a generally boring concept to think there’s one particular song you prefer playing, but I think if I picked one it would be

Brace yourself Southampton, for the countdown has begun. The south coast’s premier alternative one day festival is revving its engines in preparation for what is set to be the biggest and best Takedown Festival yet. Originally born in Salisbury, 2015 marks the sixth Takedown and the fourth in its current home at the University of Southampton. Showcasing the best in rock, metal, tech and punk the festival prides itself on bringing you the best in up and coming artists, as well as smacking you square in the face with huge names. You Me At Six, Mallory Knox, Skindred, Don Broco and Lower than Atlantis have all graced its stages over the years and we’ve had a sneaky peak at this year’s line up and you will NOT be disappointed. Its indoor setting means that despite being the first festival of the season, you won’t need your wellies and there’s not a portaloo in sight as 2,000 music fans take over the custombuilt fun factory that is the University of Southampton
Student’s Union. Heralded as one of the UK’s best organised festivals, both by punters and the bands themselves, the team behind Takedown fest work tirelessly to ensure you have a non-stop party with 10 hours of live acts across a whopping five stages, all followed by the infamous aftershow which allows fans and artists to carry on into the small hours, without having to leave the site. It appears that Skindred’s trajectory is currently set permanently to UP. Smashing their way into 2014 with the release of the eagerly anticipated new album Kill the Power they have been rampaging around the world slaying crowds with their intense and unique blend of rap, metal and reggae. It’s difficult to place this band into any genre. Their ethos is almost entirely about having a good time. They’re here to make you bounce and having honed their skills over the past decade (and then some!) we think it’s fair to say that Skindred are one of, if not possibly, THE best live band on the UK circuit today. If you’ went to a festival this year, chances are you’ll encounter the joy of a Skindred pit. Riding high from their best ever Download set (main stage, Friday, it was epic) they’ve already done NASS, Redfest, Rock Im Ring, Traffic Jam, Boardmasters, ROCKEM and V-Rox, closely followed by their first ever appearance at Bestival and as if that wasn’t enough, they’re off out on tour with crazy hair metallers Steel Panther next year too! But first, they’re returning to The Talking Heads in Southampton for the first time since 2008. Absolutely guaranteed to be an all-out sweat-fest we simply cannot wait, so we caught up with drummer Arya Goggin to talk all things festival, all things Wembley and all things Panther… Things really seem to be kicking off for you guys. How have you found the reaction to Kill the Power? It’s been amazing. It’s our first album to get a chart position; we reached number 13, which is just amazing. It’s weird because we’ve been sitting on the album for about a year and then it’s out and it’s all happened so quickly. We started with our tour in January, which started in Southampton and it was the best tour we’ve ever done with loads of sell out shows. Then we went on to Download which was amazing and then it’s all still going, there’s so much still to do. And then we’re off on tour with Steel Panther early next year! Skindred have been around for a while, and whilst musically you found your sound way back when it’s taken some time for the mainstream to catch on. Does it finally feel like it’s coming together? I think that when you start a rock or metal or punk band you’re not really thinking about mainstream. There are some bands like Limp Bizkit, or Korn or Bullet for my Valentine that have been accepted into the mainstream but Skindred weren’t really like that. It still isn’t now I don’t think! We’ve just carried on doing what we do, we’ve never gone away. I think if you just keep going and you show some tenacity in this business it becomes contagious, like a smile. Every band has its journey, they continue or they plateau and we’ve just continued. It’s not plateaued. We’re still going and that’s really cool.

You’ve played a whole load of festivals so far this year – any stand out favourites? Download has been the obvious highlight and it’s been my favourite UK festival show we’ve ever done. We had a great slot on the main stage and it was ram-packed. We couldn’t believe it, just how many people had come out to see us. We’ve been in Europe a lot too and there’s definitely some highlights there, particularly in Germany, their festivals are always great. And then in August we’re headlining at the Polish Woodstock which is definitely going to be one to beat. We’ve played it before to nearly half a million people and it’s nuts. There are relays that go on for a mile away from the stage and it’s free, so everyone turns out! You’re coming to Bournemouth to warm yourselves up for Bestival. That’s a pretty different style of festival to the ones you’re used to – how do you think they’ll react to Skindred? I think they’re gonna love it. We’ve done festivals of this sort before; we did Beautiful Days a few years ago. It’s an eclectic mix of bands, like Glastonbury and I think we’d fit really well into Glastonbury. We have fun. It’s a big party and we’ve got a main stage slot so we think everyone will love it. We wouldn’t want to be restricted to just rock and metal festivals. Do you enjoy the challenge of introducing yourselves to potential new fans? Yeah – that’s the challenge isn’t it? I like people not having a

FEATURE pre-conceived idea of what a band is going to be like. It’s dangerous to try and pigeonhole bands into one category or another. You always have to say this is ‘reggae metal’ or ‘ragga metal’ or whatever
together and we met the guys and we think they’re great. I think we’re going to have a lot of fun.
but I really like it when people are introduced without the sell first. Just listen to the music and if you like it, great. I love the accomplishment of playing music to someone who’s never heard it before. I like the surprise.
Do you think there’s a lot of crossover between Panther and Skindred fans? There is. Definitely. They’re there for the entertainment, pure and simple. There’s no ‘scene’ with Steel Panther. All their fans will love us and all our fans will love them.
Talking Heads is pretty small as venues go, does the show change at all when you bring it to a smaller stage? Not really. I mean, the production changes a bit but that’s just lights and things, the performance stays exactly the same. When we headline we get to play for a bit longer too, which is always nice haha! We just do what we do, so you’ll get the full Skindred festival experience, just in a small, sweaty room. That’s where we started, playing pubs and clubs and that’s where it’s the most fun. What’s not a small stage is Wembley. How did the Steel Panther support slot come about? It was really random. I mean, we’re a headline band now and we haven’t supported anyone for a while but support slots are great for engaging with new fans and we thought, who would we like to go out with? Steel Panther are similar to us in that their fans are really open minded. They play their music and have a great time and it’s all about putting on a great show. And then Andy Copping (Download festival organiser) was putting the show
What about new bands rising through the ranks at the moment – is there anyone we should be checking out? You should definitely check out this Canadian band called Pup who are amazing. They’re playing at Reading. Check out the video for Reservoir. I always give a shout out to my boys in Idiom, they’re just about to go out on tour with Sikth in October so make sure you see them. And Collisions too, they’re a young band coming out of Brighton that I really like. And finally, you’ve been hugely busy – when do you get a break and what will you be doing to relax? Ooooh…..my next time off is after Bestival. I get two weeks off and I’m going to Los Angeles and Las Vegas in September so that’s what I’ll be doing to relax. I’m looking forward to that. FEATURE It’s a story we’re all familiar with: school friends form a band through a combined desire to turn passion for music into sounds of their own. Blitz Kids are a British rock band purposefully navigating their way up the ranks, and with recent album The Good Youth it’s plain to see (or hear!) that they’ve found their sound. The new album sees the Crewe-founded four-piece wholly capitalise on the potential they’ve shown since emerging into the public eye. Recorded in the USA with John Feldmann [of Goldfinger fame] producer for the likes of Panic at the Disco, All Time Low and Kelis. It’s full of gritty lyrics and honest sincerity, yet melodically bursting with Californian rays. But things haven’t come together overnight; the roots of this band go way back, to when 11 year old Joe would walk to school beside the year-above Jono. Nick Montgomery was also known to the pair from afternoons playing in sandpits and when teenage years descended and the itch to create music was finally scratched, the three came together to contest battle-of-the-bands events: Joe on drums at the time, Nick on bass and Jono on guitar. Influences – from emo to punk, post-hardcore to nu-metal – were assimilated and processed into the future foundations of Blitz Kids. Friendships remained but the songs didn’t stay the same; Joe moved out from behind the drum kit to centre-stage, and Blitz Kids was born. EP releases and self-booked tours took the band from boisterous backstreet bar rooms to toilet-circuit triumphs. Their live set became their lifeblood and, today, it’s still performing that fills this band with palpable enthusiasm. Now joined by drummer Matt Freer, Joe, Jono and Nick have fused a previously unexplored lyrical introspection with some of the band’s most instant-gratification compositions yet. This accessibility is evident from lead single ‘On My Own’, a track that complements its dark heart with vibrantly upbeat motifs and a proper holler-yourself-sore chorus. This band’s ambition is massive: their sights are set on headlining Reading and Leeds one day [where kids Joe and Jono would camp at Leeds for their summer-break rock fix] and it’s not an entirely fantastical dream either. With songs this radio-friendly but blessed with uncommon depth, Blitz Kids could see the new album propel them towards the vanguard of contemporary rock crews. ‘Pop’ to this band is not a dirty word; to be popular would mean achieving their dreams, the moment they’ve been building towards since they were teenagers. We nabbed a few minutes with lead vocalist Joe James to find out exactly how it’s all working out… Southampton is the 2nd date on your UK tour. We last saw you here at Takedown festival, what was that like? It was great! We loved Takedown festival, it was our second time playing and it was a pleasure. I was born in Bournemouth so Southampton will always have a special place in my heart. I used to go to games at St. Mary’s with my Grandad. We always get a great reception every time we visit so we’re excited to come back. After the UK, you’re off into Europe with Deaf Havana, that must feel like a pretty big step… We’ve been out to mainland Europe a few times now and it feels like a second home. The fans are so lovely and the promoters really look after you. Havana are close friends of ours and like us they enjoy a scoop or two! So if we come back alive I’ll count that tour a roaring success. But you recently jetted off around Europe on your own headline tour, how do you think the two will compare? It’s impossible to tell. Our headline tour was a great success and I’m sure everyone who came out to see us on that will come again in October! Then it’s our job to make sure they have an equally great time and hopefully we’ll make a few new fans while we’re at it!
You write about a lot of personal issues like anxiety and depression. Do you think it’s important to connect with fans over issues like this? I always write from experience and sometimes my lyrics become my own source of therapy. I think it’s important for me to share what I’ve been through so that anyone else who has experienced similar things can relate to that. Hopefully it can help them and in that way I’m making a positive impact with that we’re doing. Are you writing at the moment? Yes. We’re taking our time with the next record which is something we’ve never done before and it feels good. That’s not to say that it’s going to be a millennia before it comes out, we’ve been writing for a while. We wanted to give ourselves a head start. What can we expect from your live shows? They are full of energy. We engage a lot with our audience and we give it everything we can every night. Who’s got the worst habits on the tour bus and what are they? I sleep a lot, too much really. Jono cracks his knuckles which goes right through me and Nic and Ice Man are a devilishly naughty duo on a night out. When the rhythm section start the party, it never stops. Which one of you would make the best girl? Jono would be a right thirsty little minx if he was a girl and I don’t think he’d mind me saying that. Nic would be the prettiest, those cheekbones.
What’s the best festival you’ve played this year? It’s got to be Slam Dunk festival. We’ve never had a bad show there. There is such a great vibe about the whole festival. It’s all about discovering new bands, revelling in the nostalgia of older ones and having a great time with your friends.
And finally…..if there was a blitz what one thing would you rescue from you house and why? My iPhone although it would be glued in my hand anyway… so my cat. He’s a good chap. Words Zan Lawther
Do you prefer playing festival shows or sweaty venues? Every show is different. It’s impossible to choose. I feed off the energy of the crowd so sometimes it all depends on them.

Music in the City returns for IT’s 6th year in southampton!

What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? I think the Westgate Hall is a wonderful venue for singers, I’ve sung there a few times now, lovely venue, I sang there for the first time last year and it’s great to be back. So you’ve played MITC before? tell about your experiences over the years. i’ve performed every year now! last year I played at the Sea City Museum, the year before I performed at the art gallery and I’ve played twice in the vaults! The first time I sang was in St. Michael’s church, where I believe I sang the first song in the first festival. I sing a lot of songs which are all themed about Southampton so singing those songs in interesting places is great fun and most inspiring.

What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? The Atmosphere - the city comes alive with talent, creativity and both the audience and performers love it. If you just met someone who knew nothing about the event, how would you sum it up? There literally is something for everyone, and not only from an audience point of view but also from a ‘citizen’ point of view. It showcases what the city has to offer, clubs to join, groups to become involved with, new things to learn and enjoy - it’s all out there. It’s a fun, uplifting day scattered sprinkled through the city centre. What are you looking forward to most about your set? We love the reaction of the audience, we are so close to them and thats what we love about this event, there are no barriers, you can ‘feel’ the reaction which just gets better and better each year as the popularity of the event grows. We usually play a couple of sets in different locations and it is such a compliment to us that people enjoy our performance enough to follow us to our next location. Have you played MITC before? tell about your experiences over the years. We’ve been playing at music in the city for a few years now, this will be our 4th year and we have started to notice a few familiar faces in the crowd. Southampton love our style, and it enhances our performance when we see feet tapping and the cries for ‘more’. We’ve played there in all weather come rain or shine but there is always a warm welcome from people even as we carry our drums down the street.

What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? The broad mix of music on offer, there is absolutely loads of great bands to see and hear. I think it’s a thrill to find something new, you discover new talent and new bands and then you find them online afterwards so you can follow their movements and releases. If you just met someone who knew nothing about the event, how would you sum it up? Music in the City is very broad but there’s something for everyone. There are different locations you might not have been experienced before like the wine vaults and all the interesting places along the old city walls, everyone’s really friendly and it’s a fun day out! What are you looking forward to most about your set? Well I’m playing the SS Shieldhall so it will be floating on water, which will be a new experience for me!

What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? It’s quite exciting just being a part of such a big local event. We did sing in the same venue last year which is king johns palace but we’re all looking forward to it because it’s such a great venue. Last year we were blessed with brilliant weather too plus the staging and set up that was provided was great for our set, everyone enjoyed it and we’re happy to be back. So you’ve played MITC before? tell about your experiences over the years. This is our second time playing yes, I think we just love entertaining people, we like having fun and hope we share that with the audience, we’re actually an off shoot of the Southampton Ukulele Jam and this event gives us an opportunity to rework some classic songs with our own unique twist. We might not be as many as the full Ukulele Jam but we make plenty of noise with just the four of us! If you just met someone who knew nothing about the event, how would you sum it up? I’d say you must go, it’s fun and it’s not just a show case of local music and talent it also shows off the amazing old parts of the city, locations like King Johns Palace and Holyrood Church. You’re getting music and you’re also getting to see the cities heritage and it’s all 100% free.

What are you looking forward to the most about Music in the City 2014? I think i’m playing in the Castle Vault this year and i haven’t played there before, so that, and checking out some new music. What are you looking forward to most about your set? One of the songs in my set has just been signed by a publisher, we play it last…so probably that and the other tunes from my new album. In general though I just love playing and entertaining a crowd. If you just met someone who knew nothing about the event, how would you sum it up? Check out the list of bands playing, spend the day in Southampton and take yourself around some of the most unique venues, discovering and enjoying music as you go. Have you played MITC before and what your previous experiences been like? I played MITC in 2013 and I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I’d just played 24 shows around the UK and this was our last one. We set up inside an underground vault. It was pretty unique. The place was packed and it created an atmosphere that you just wouldn’t get anywhere else, bar The Cavern in Liverpool.
