FEATURE

Takedown festival returns to the University of Southampton site for its fourth year on 7 March. Kicking off the festival season with a bang, it’s fast becoming the South’s #1 alternative music event. A huge one day extravaganza, each year up to 50 bands take to the stage across one massive day of rock, metal and any wildcards the festival organisers want to throw at us. Already announced for this year’s fest are the feisty young upstarts Mallory Knox, storming their way into main stage headliner status after opening the very same stage only three years ago. Leading the way for them is pop rocker Charlie Simpson, who’ll be gracing us with a stripped down acoustic set. For the heavy lovers amongst us Bleed from Within, Devil Sold His Soul and hotly tipped newcomers The One Hundred and Create to Inspire are already chomping at the bit to get going, whilst those of us of more vintage years may be excited to hear that Inme have joined the ranks with an exclusive performance of the entirety of their seminal album ‘Overgrown Eden’. Takedown is a proud supporter of new music and aims to bring you not only the best and biggest bands they can convince to squeeze into the University complex but also the freshest new artists that the UK has to offer. Testament to their ability to pick out contenders for future global domination is the call on bagging Mallory Knox in 2012 so we’d definitely encourage music fans to look further down the bill this year and check out some of the local talent the South has to offer. We grabbed a few minutes with the gorgeous Sam Douglas of Mallory Knox recently to find out just want it is about Takedown Festival that makes them want to keep coming back….. You’re returning to Takedown for the 3rd time, this time as MAIN STAGE HEADLINERS, how does that feel in comparison to opening the same stage in 2012? It’s a really cool feeling. Takedown was the very first festival we ever played and we opened the main stage that day. To come back as headliners a few years later is something we are all pretty proud of.

You even came to party at Takedown last year even though you weren’t playing. What is it about TD that makes it so special? Haha I did! It’s just always got a really good vibe about it. A lot of my friends were playing last year and luckily we had a few days off while we were recording our new album, and Takedown fell on one of those days so I decided I wanted to come hang out and watch bands instead of being stuck bored in the studio! I had a great

time & definitely took advantage of being at a festival and not playing by drinking one too many beers. You’re currently in Europe, how’s that going? It’s going really well. It’s a new experience for us. We’ve never toured out here before apart from a few one offs here & there. The venues are huge for a first tour out here as well, so we owe alot to One Ok Rock for bringing us out on this tour. What’s the best venue or show you’ve ever played? That’s a tricky one because the more shows we do the better they seem to get right now! I’ll always hold Reading & Leeds in very high regard, just because we used to go there as punters. Nottingham Rock City was pretty special as well last year. However our latest headline run that we just did in the UK was my favourite tour we’ve ever done. 2 sold out nights at the Electric Ballroom was a big deal for us! What’s still left to tick off on the Mallory Knox bucket list? We gotta play the Abbey Stadium in Cambridge one day. Haha that might be on my personal bucket list instead of the bands though! What’s the nicest thing you’ve ever seen written about MK? We are very lucky to have a lot of people that really seem to care about this band. We get a lot of nice comments daily and we do our best to read them all. It’s hard to pinpoint the nicest thing I’ve ever read but I feel a real sense of pride when people write us letters saying how our music has helped them out in some way. That’s not why we write music, we just write it for the love of doing it but if we can effect some people the way that blink 182 and Alkaline Trio did for me, then that’s awesome. And what’s the weirdest? There’s a few weird ones. Some stuff I get sent online is pretty interesting to say the least. One of the weirdest things that happened was on stage though

when a few people started throwing tampons on stage at us. Just one or two like... and thankfully not used! What’s your favourite pizza place, although we know you’re all really partial to a certain chicken restaurant….? All about the Nandos aren’t we!?! I’m a big fan of the double cheese and garlic butter pizza at dominos though. Can we get that on our rider please? Wearing your own merch – yes or no? Personally no. I’d just feel a bit awkward. High fives or fist bumps? Good old fashioned handshake surely? What’s coming up for MK in 2015? We are heading out to America for the very first time on January with Pierce the Veil and Sleeping with Sirens which should be incredible. We are hugely thankful to them for giving us the chance to go out there. As first tours go we couldn’t have wished for anything better. After that we will see what happens. We literally want to see as much of the world as we can next year and get our music out to as many people as we can. What new bands can you recommend we check out? I’m a big fan of Moose blood. They supported us on our UK run and they are my favourite band in the UK right now. Definitely check them out if you haven’t. Absolutely lovely guys too. We look forward to seeing you at Takedown, tell our readers why they should get a ticket and camp out at main stage to see you… Because it’s gonna be our first show back from our 3 month USA tour and it’s going to have a real homecoming vibe about it. It’s gonna be like a big celebration and everyone’s invited to be a part of it and then we can all get really drunk afterwards!

Dragging themselves up pretty much from the gutter The Used have truly told the rags to riches story as they struggled through poverty, homelessness and substance abuse to push themselves forward in the music industry since they formed in 2001. A difficult band to define, The Used’s music has been classified under many subgenres of rock. Their musical style has been labelled as everything from post-hardcore to alternative rock, hard rock and heavy metal though the term ‘gross pop’ coined by frontman Bert McCracken is possibly the most accurate. “We just don’t consider ourselves ‘emo’ or ‘screamo’ and we never have. We’re a rock band that’s all we’ve ever been.” says bassist Jeph Howard. Whatever you want to call it, you can’t deny that The Used perfectly combine the gritty bite of a team that’s been through the ringer with a melodic catchiness that is totally infectious. We can’t wait for them to roll into town on 5 February as they put the newly re-branded Engine Rooms through its paces, so we caught up with Jeph for a few words about their latest album and the UK tour… You’ve not been in the Uk for a while are you looking forward to doing to finally doing a big headline tour again? Yes We played a couple shows in the UK during 2014 but they were just a tease. Also I need a good damn spicy curry. What’s your favourite show you’ve ever played? I’m sure there are many but if there is one that stands out in particular. We’ve had a lot of good shows and even more great ones. I think the best ones for me are the ones when I forget that I’m playing and just dissolve into the show.

You wrote your latest album backwards i.e. writing vocals before the music, and it seems to have worked out well (the album is so great). Is this a method you will now adopt for future material? We usually take a bit of a different writing approach during each recording. I had a lot of fun record the bass to I.E. but I still prefer the older “jaming as a band” writing style. What were the benefits and pitfalls of writing like this? The benefits were having vocals finished and being able to mold the music around them. Id say the pitfalls are sometimes getting stuck in a vibe. Which of your songs are you most proud of? Bass wise is say all of Imaginary Enemy, song wise i’d say the first record as a whole. And if you could have written any song by anyone else, what would it be? Super Mario Bros 2- main theme. The legend of Zelda- dungeon theme. Secret chiefs 3 - Vajra, Secret chiefs 3 - combat for the angel. Marvin Gaye - heard it through the grapevine. Who’s the cleanest/tidiest member in the band? Hmmm, I’d say me but Dan usually cleans the bus up after everyone has destroyed it. Who eats the most in the band? I do for sure. I can do the entire Curry mile in just under thirty minutes. If there was a movie made about The Used, what would the title be, and why? There already was, it was called “Cemetery Man” staring Rupert Everett. Because we kick ass for The Lord.

What’s your favourite thing about coming to the UK and what are you most looking forward to? What do you consider to be your biggest Besides the curries? Getting to see all of my friends including achievement as a band? our wonderful publicist Em! Still being a touring band after 14 years. Great, the fans of the older records love it and the fans from the Words: Zan Lawther newer records love it as well.

I would say a bit of both, we go in and do what we wanna do, that’s what we’ve always done. No-one tells us what to do, we always follow our own hearts and what we feel is good and what we like, but of course there is pressure. This is gonna be our 10th album, and with every album we make we grow as a band, and that means that we also make better albums. That’s the exciting thing about it...having pressure. If you just sit back and relax, and take things for granted, then you cannot finish as an artist. You always need to strive to reach higher goals, and make better and better songs. For me that’s the challenge. What are current plans for a new album? We have started talking about it but we haven’t really started working on it yet. It’s more on a talking basis right now. The tour we’re doing in January and February, when we’re coming to the UK, that’s gonna be our last tour for this current album. Then we’re gonna start working for real on the new one. I don’t really know at this point, but it’s not going to be next year. It’ll be 2016.

Some bands are that bloody awesome they manage to stand the test of time, and Swedish melodic death metallers Amon Amarth (that’s Sindarin for Mount Doom in Middle Earth, all you Lord of The Rings fans out there) have done just that. They’ve been at it for a staggering 22 years now! Drawing many of their lyrical inspiration from Norse mythology and history leads them to be coined often as ‘viking metal’, but the band themselves would say that this is something usually associated with Norwegian Black Metal bands, and that they don’t really know what that is anyway. They just like writing songs about Vikings. With 9 studio albums under their belt, the latest ‘Deceiver Of The Gods’ being released in June 2013, relentless worldwide touring and a palpable never-ending passion for what they do these Scandinavian giants undoubtedly carved their names and secured their places in the death metal hall of fame a long long time ago. We caught up with guitarist Olavi Mikkonen to find out about their early 2015 UK tour, what the plans are for the next album and to ask him which Norse God is the best one. What inspired you to be in a band? When I grew up and started listening to heavier music in the 80s like Iron Maiden and Saxon and Judas Priest, then I found Slayer and then death metal, obviously. It’s just amazing music, and I wanted to do something similar. What did you all do before you were in the band? I was a carpenter. The other guys were all in similar jobs...in construction, and Johan [Hegg] our singer was a truck driver. We’ve all been in bands since we were teenagers. If you’re not gonna make money out of this when you’re a teenager you have to have a job. It took us maybe 10 years, so 10 years ago, to start making enough money so we could concentrate totally on the music. What helps keep the band motivated and inspired after 22 years in the business? I guess it’s because we still have passion for this kind of music, and we like to create music together, and obviously we really enjoy playing live. I would say passion. We still have the same passion we did 20 years ago. 9 studio albums in do you find yourself under constant pressure to improve each one, or do you just ‘do your thing’ and hope fans like it?

Do you ever sit there and think ‘right what can we do to inject something new or different into the next album? I think like all the time, and not only with albums but with the live shows and everything. We always try to find ways to improve ourselves. For me settling for ‘okay’ wouldn’t give me anything. You always have to come up with something better or new. It’s exciting. Which Norse God is the most badass? Thor. He’s the guy with the hammer, and red hair and a red beard. He’s the most badass because he’s so angry and so strong. I think he’s definitely the coolest because he’s so angry. Which one do you think you’re most like? I’m probably most like him. I’m also really angry. Your videos are visually captivating, with a ‘film like’ quality, who comes up with the concepts for them? Everything we do comes from the band. Obviously some of the videos have something to do with the lyrics, so if you have cool lyric you just wanna picture the lyrics. That’s one way to do it. Pretty much everything we do there’s always a thought behind it, the bands thoughts behind it. We spend a lot of touring, a lot of time in a tour bus, and a good way to spend that time is to plan things like this. You’re touring the UK in January, what are you looking forward to the most with that? Usually when we play the UK we play the main key markets like London, Manchester and Birmingham, and last time we played quite big venues. I think this is gonna be like the ‘opposite’ tour . We’re going into different markets that we’ve never been in before, and we’re also going for way smaller clubs than we’re used to. I think it’s gonna be exciting, very cool. It’s gonna be very sweaty. How do you ‘keep it fresh’ on tour? We always try to improve. On this tour we’re definitely going to play a lot of songs we don’t normally do. This is the last tour for us in a long while. We can’t bring too much production because they’re small clubs, but we’re going to bring a f*cking awesome tour! Are you visiting any places you haven’t been before? We’re doing 15 shows and I would say 10 of the places we’ve never been to before, including both Southampton and Plymouth. It’s really exciting. What can we expect from those shows? It’s gonna be a good night of metal. Tight, sweaty, intimate and loud. WORDS:MARIANNE HARRIS

news Just one month after the launch of their new 550-capacity Bristol venue, The Marble Factory, MJR Group (Bristol Motion, Cardiff Globe, Reading Sub:89 and Bowery District and London’s Dingwalls) have announced that they will be launching Engine Rooms in Southampton. Formerly The Mo’ Club, the venue has previously hosted the likes of Bastille, Devin Townsend Project, Don Broco, Mallory Knox and Lower Than Atlantis. The space is undergoing a full renovation featuring 3 configurations of 400, 600 & 800 capacity to accommodate the expansion of operations to include live music, comedy, theatre, cinema, exhibitions and bespoke festivals alongside it’s existing successful warehouse club nights. “We’re all really excited about the possibilities with this venue.” states Mike Jones of The MJR Group. “Bringing production / marketing / booking / ticketing and everything in-between in-house is giving us great flexibility and fills a vital gap in the market along the whole South Coast of the UK. Former Attack Attack, lead vocalist founded Of Mice & Men with fellow band member Jaxin Hall in 2009 after Austin’s departure from the Ohio band. There is no doubt that Of Mice & Men are one of California’s finest metalcore bands and pleasing many UK fans they have announced a very exciting UK headline tour and the show will not disappoint, these lads put on a powerful performance when headlining The Pit stage on the Sunday night at Reading and Leeds festival in 2014, which saw the likes of some of the most current and biggest metal/rock bands around.

You may be familiar with these monster metaller’s, if you don’t you are missing out. Not even a year since forming and punk rock quintet Creeper are already turning heads in London and have a sold out Joiners show under their belts. They embark on their first UK tour this month with none other than veteran Welsh rockers Funeral For a Friend, quite an explosive beginning for a great new band, we caught up with them in December to find out more... How did you all meet? Creeper met from the pieces of two other UK Hardcore bands, Hang The Bastard and Our Time Down Here. It was kinda of a long process because all of us had wanted time out after our other projects had finished up, both of which were known for our work rate. We’ve had the luxury of time with this new project, it has been a labour of love. What made you decide to start playing music together? This kind of music is at the very essence of who we are as people, punk music and the punk scene is how we all became friends in the first place. We had known each other a while before this project came about and it felt very natural to put together the pieces of this new band from pieces of old ones. If you had to make up a new genre to describe your sound, what would you call it? That’s a really difficult question to answer as I always just consider Creeper a punk band. If I were to try to describe our band in more depth though, I would say we’re a theatrical, hardcore punk band with an attention to aesthetic. One that deals with fantasy but which comes with a message from a very true, very real place. What was your highlight of 2014? Everything about 2014 has been incredible for us. Highlights I guess would be our first two shows in London and Southampton selling out, our debut EP being pressed on 12” and getting to make a load of new friends in the process. These things have been very special this year.

You’re about to head out on tour with Funeral for a Friend, how excited are you about that? We are so very thrilled to be heading out on tour with Funeral, we have grown up with their music and it is a total honour. I remember the first record I ever had on my USB MP3 player when I was a kid was ‘Between Model And Order’. Rest assured we will be singing along and stage diving with everyone else in the audience while Funeral play each night. You’re debuting a new song on tour, what’s it like? Our new song is a progression on from the EP. It has a really sweet skate punk riff in the verse, this cool bouncy chorus and a middle 8 we took from a David Bowie song. It’s fast and dramatic, super thrilled to be debuting it. What’s on your iPod right now? Right now I’m on a plane coming back from Paris so my Spotify isn’t working which sucks. I just checked my iTunes library though and that features songs from the musical ‘The Phantom Of The Paradise’, Lou Reed ‘Transformer’, Bauhaus ‘The Sky Has Gone Out’. If you could play any festival, what would it be and why? Think we’d love to play The Fest in Florida, mainly so we could go to Disneyworld afterwards though. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to? I saw Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds last year at the Hammersmith Apollo and i’m pretty sure it was the best performance I’ve ever seen. Like watching some kind of deity stalk the stage, something truly special and otherworldly. Why should we come check out your live show? If you’re looking for something a little different, with a lot of energy and passion you should definitely come check us out.
