MUSIC prepare to rock their last
This month we chat to horn-fuelled pop-punkers and local heroes Kids Can’t Fly about their last ever shows before calling it a day after 8 years on the Southampton music scene. We also chat to Amber Run ahead of their Festibelly performance and The Lafontaines who will be appearing at Redfest this month. Top this off with festival and event previews, a particularly silly DumbAss Questions session with Iwrestledabearonce and the chance to win a pair of tickets to see Eels in Salisbury and it’s easy to see why we’re still the most popular free listings in the South.

FEATURE Southampton’s favourite pop rockers set off on their final ever tour this month as they give fans the chance to bid them a fond farewell. Their first Joiners date sold out in a matter of days…so what did they do? They only went and added another one didn’t they?! Hurrah we hear you cry! Now we can all go the party! And what a party it will be. You can’t fail to be moved by their confident and uplifting brand of pop punk rock. We mean literally, moved. Expect to bounce. A lot. Featuring a full on horn section they cross the borders between ska and pop punk and give the whole thing a slightly tougher edge with searing breakdowns flung into the mix to balance out the cheeky playfulness of the brass. These boys (all 7 of them, and all standing over 6 feet tall) have shared the stage with the likes of The Blackout, Zebrahead, Less Than Jake, Don Broco, performed at Sonisphere and Takedown festivals, we’ve watched their videos on Scuzz, MTV Rocks and Kerrang…..so why in the world are Kids Can’t Fly saying goodbye? We caught up with original founding member Dave Matthews to ask exactly that… First of all, why is this the last ever KCF tour? Well we were going strong until summer 2011 then in a blink of an eye the band started taking a back seat in our lives. Band members left, life took over and our jobs, girlfriends and cats became the priority. So until now I guess you could say we’ve been on an unannounced hiatus! During Winter 2013 I had a Blues Brothers moment – I was “on a mission from God” to reunite the band with which ever ex members were willing! You’ve already sold out one date at Joiners and have had to add a second due to demand – is it bittersweet seeing how much fans still love your music? Yes of course! We’ve had the most incredible fan base over the years and we are so grateful for the fact that they haven’t forgotten about us. I guess it’s best to leave things on a high! What can we expect from the final live shows? Seven large, sweaty men playing their hearts out for the last time. We’re playing extended sets so we can fit in as many oldschool songs as possible. Which song are you most proud of and which song are you looking forward to playing live the most? I can’t pick one, so I’ll choose two while keeping this short. ‘She Called Shotgun’ has always been a banger and it really helped boost our career in the early days and was our first video to hit Kerrang! radio and TV. The other is ‘Esmeralda’ which also hit the big TV channels including MTV and The BOX. We felt each of these songs were ‘upping our game’ at the time. You’ve been through a lot of line up changes over the years – how many members have come and gone over the years? We have had so many we’ve contemplated releasing a game of Kids Can’t Fly Top trumps. But we’d probably call it Top Chumps! (Dad jokes, sorry!)
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | JUly 2014
You’re the only original member – how does it feel to finally be saying goodbye to KCF? It’s a mixed bag of emotions. Being in a band is so many things… stressful, rewarding, educating, creative, plus really bad for your sleeping pattern and liver… We’ve all learnt so much and met so many great friends and fans. I’m glad to be leaving things on a good note! If there was anywhere you could have played or anyone who you could have played with, what would it have been? I’d love to support Fall Out Boy or Paramore and we were very close to touring Japan and Russia, so I’d choose one of those. What bands would you recommend that are coming through at the moment to fill the inevitable void left by KCF? Well I would have initially said our friends Forever Can Wait, but they are also splitting up! In fact our final shows are their last ones too, which will make these Joiners shows DOUBLE AWESOME. Any new projects on the horizon for any of you? Nothing to write home about! We are all now in creative careers, so pressing forward with those. We are all very lucky to have landed such cool jobs! And finally, anything you’d like to say to your fans? Thank you, we love you! Keep supporting the local music scene and get your asses to as many final tour dates as possible so we can say bye in person!

Would you rather be able to run 100 miles per hour or fly at 0.01 miles per hour? FLY! Even if it’s slow, it’s still fucking flying! Where did your band name come from? Gary Busey said it on a TV show... and it seemed like a good idea to name our band that at the time. Here we are 7 years later! Fun fact: We appreciate this question more than “WHAT KIND OF BEAR WAS IT?!” so thank you for that.
?????????
Would you rather have a photographic memory that can only retain disgusting thoughts for life or have a 1 minute memory where you constantly introduce yourself to everyone? Hmmmm....If I can only retain disgusting thoughts, I wouldn’t remember a lot and I’d be constantly introducing myself to everyone anyway, so might as well go with option two! Hi there, this is Steven from iwrestledabearonce. What’s your favourite track on recent album Late For Nothing? Probably Carnage Asada... because of the Steve Vai solo. In my humble opinion though, Late For Nothing has the least amount of shitty songs of any album we’ve put out so far, so that makes it tough to pick. Would you rather have an extra finger or lose a toe? The extra finger would come in rather... handy... If you could only say one word for the rest of your life, what word would it be? “Yup” You guys are pretty weird. What’s the weirdest thing that’s happened to you on tour? Too much shit for what I’m assuming is meant to be a brief response! Life and love and loss and diarrhoea across the entire goddamn globe I suppose would be the short answer... I should probably title my autobiography that. Which character from the Simpsons do you see yourself in? Probably a strange mixture of the entire family... I relate to qualities in most of the Simpson family. But we DID name a song after a Grandpa Simpson quote... What colour brick would you rather be and why? This question just makes me think about the rapper Stitches... if you haven’t heard him yet, you’re fucking up! Please watch/love his video for “Brick In Yo Face.” You can just google “Stitches - I love selling blow” and it hit play. Why should we come to see your live show? Because I can guarantee you that it will get fun/weird... And if you enjoy our music at all, then we would like to meet you. Also Courtney will probably talk about her flatulence on stage and you’re an English-speaking country, so that has the potential to be funny as opposed to just awkward! Shit, let me just ask our publicist what the correct response to this question is and get back to you...

AMbER RUN
Having deliberately chosen a name with no obvious connotations, Amber Run are determined to stand aside from the herd. And with their powerhouse indie pop sounds, they achieve it. The band’s previous singles the anthemic ‘Noah’ and stirring ‘Heaven’ – both received support from the likes of Zane Lowe and Fearne Cotton on Radio 1, as well as being championed by XFM. Amber Run are currently in the studio recording their debut album with tip top producer Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Two Door Cinema Club, Foals, Jake Bugg), due for release later this year but if you can’t wait that long, check out their current single ‘Spark’. Their live shows are not to be missed - having recently headlined the BBC Introducing night at Koko in London where they stunned fans with their vast sound and pitch perfect harmonies. They’re performing at a whole host of festivals this summer, including the fabulous Festibelly in the New Forest on 12 July so we thought it would be best to catch up with frontman Will Jones to find out a bit more about Amber Run… You’ve just come off tour with Kodaline, what was that like? Yeah, amazing. It was our first support tour and the first time we got to play in front of a few thousand people a night so it was a proper buzz for all of us. Shame it didn’t last longer really! At our stage you don’t really get the chance to play on those kinds of stages so it was good to get a taste of what it feels like to be up there. New single ‘Spark’ came out recently, how did that go? Really well. We’re all very proud of that song and it felt good to finally get it out there. You end up sitting on some songs so long waiting to put them out so we were excited to show it to people. And you’re currently recording an album, is that right? What can we expect and when do we get to hear it? We’ve finished the album now. We spent 4 weeks over January and February doing it and did a few more songs for it a couple of weeks ago in May. Can’t say for sure when you’ll get to hear it, we’re looking at early 2015 right now. I suppose the album is really a solid demonstration of the kind of band we are right now. I think people get it in their heads that we’re a newer Mumford and Sons but that couldn’t be further from the truth really. People will see what I mean when they hear the album. I don’t think there’s an acoustic guitar in sight except for on one song, and there’s a lot of synths and programming in there. What was it like working with Mike Crossey? Well we had heard about Mike beforehand because he’d done such amazing work with those bands. When we were talking about working with him, The 1975’s record had just come out which we were all so impressed by. You only get to do your debut album once and Mike managed to inject so much life into it and we couldn’t be prouder. He has the experience to be able to pull off some mad ideas we could never even dream up to make the record sound so dynamic. Mike, Jon Gilmore and Mike Spink (the engineers) are the best guys and we consider them all good friends now.
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | JUly 2014
What are your biggest influences, musical or otherwise? Our producer and good friend Sam Winfield has said a few times that he doesn’t think he’s met a band whose members have such different tastes. We really just always end up wanting to make our songs sound as huge as possible. I think the key influences are bands who are known for their dynamics such as Elbow, alongside the more atmospheric bands like This Will Destroy You and Explosions in the Sky. There’s genuinely just so much in there thrown together. You’re performing at a load of festivals this summer, do you have a favourite? There’s a lot of different ones. We were excited to do Isle of Wight because of the scale of the whole thing, but on the other end of the spectrum I’m really looking forward to playing Barn on the Farm. We played it last year when we had just started out and it was such a good vibe. The weather was unbelievable and the intimacy of the whole thing really makes it special. And you’re off on tour with Lewis Watson shortly, what can we expect from the live show? Well, we want to try out some new songs later in the year so we might throw a couple of curveballs into the set. We want to make as big an impact as possible so we’ll do as much as we can with the time we have. We’re always trying to grab the attention of the crowd so expect a set with a lot of dynamics. What was it that got you all together as a band? Joe (vocals), Tom (bass) and I have known each other for years as we went to school together. We played in bands back then but it was just for fun. Joe started doing solo, singer-songwriter stuff when he went off to Nottingham. After a while he realised that he’d rather be doing a band so we all decided to come together under the name Amber Run and start making much bigger music. Henry (keys) was Tom’s neighbour in halls and Felix (drums) was a friend from home. It was all very natural which was why we were so surprised when things started kicking off so soon after forming.

T H E l a f o n ta i n e s There’s a definite sense of LADS ON TOUR that emanates from The LaFontaines as we chat to them about their experiences in 2014 so far. Scotland’s current hottest export are not shy of having a bit of a laugh and getting stuck into enjoying themselves. If their recent trip to New York is anything to go by (there was an incident involving the boys being told to pipe down by none other than James Bond himself, Mr Daniel Craig) we think catching them on the festival circuit this summer might be just the ticket. Their youthful confidence oozes through in latest single ‘Under the Storm’. Theirs is a unique blend of rap, rock and pop that sees them crossing the borders of any real labels as they appeal to fans all over the place. But no matter where your heart lies musically, you can’t escape the fact that it’s just a little bit brilliant. And the fact that their live shows are packed full of energy, antics and high jinks simply adds to their appeal. Here frontman Kerr Okan takes us through what’s been going on with them over the past few months… We saw you in Southampton recently on tour with another genre-busting act, Bad Rabbits. How did that tour go? It was amazing. With the type of music we play it’s not very often we get to go out with a band on a similar wavelength so that was pretty different for us. They were absolutely incredible as well, a pleasure to watch and good drinking buddies afterwards. This year you also won the Big Apple Award, the Sunday Mailbacked Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland initiative and jetted off to NYC for a week. What was that like? Also absolutely incredible. Oddly I don’t think I’ve spoken to people much about it since getting back, purely because I don’t think they’d believe me. We were paraded down a closed off 6th avenue along with some friends and hundreds of pipe bands, stayed in a hotel that Obama was in and annoyed a few celebrities like Daniel Craig & Lindsay Lohan to name but a few. I think for 5 very skint guys from central Scotland it was all fairly mental...certainly different to our usual lives in Motherwell anyway. What kind of response did you get out there? All of the shows went down really well, we even had a few people that knew the songs which was more than a little bit surreal but all in all it was great. We’ve never made any apologies for being Scottish and I’m sure that’s evident if you listen to the music but there was a point we worried it would be hard for people outside of Scotland to translate or relate to. We try to make it as global as possible though and to be honest it seems to go down even better when we travel outside the glorious Scottish borders. It must have been one off the bucket list. What else is on the bucket list? Hopefully we’ll be able to cross off a European tour soon, it would be cool to see how different countries took to us. Strangely the biggest item off the bucket list we’re only achieving next week and that’s recording our debut album. We’ve been ready to record for quite a while now but everything has finally come together so releasing that will be a massive item off the list and we’re all stupidly excited about it. Your music cuts right across hip-hop, rock, pop and electro. What are your biggest influences? I think the only way our music works as it does is the same
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | JUly 2014
reason it’s a very difficult question to answer. We all listen to incredibly different things. Collectively though we take some degree of inspiration from The Roots or Outkast albeit I wouldn’t say we sound too much like either of them. Are you excited to be back at Redfest this July? Very much so, we had a great time last year and I believe this time we’re getting to stay for a bit of a party so that’s a bonus. Who’s getting in the beers? Do you like going to festivals? I’ve been going to festivals since I was old enough to convince my parents that I was a responsible underage drinker, so I’ve always been a fan of going to loads of different festivals. We’ve done quite a few now and I can barely remember any I haven’t enjoyed in one way or another. People always just seem much more up for a laugh than at a standard club gig. Likely the fact most folk are drinking constantly all day and rolling about in the mud will have something to do with it. Is it true you gambled away your budget for making the video to ‘Under the Storm’? Unfortunately so, we are incredibly daft lads. The resulting budget video came out alright though, didn’t it? What gave you the idea to parody some of the world famous videos within it? We really didn’t have any option but to try and do something different to be honest. We were really lucky that we could pull something together just by pulling in favours from friends and the like. That and we thought it would be a good laugh to make John cry on camera like Sinead O’Conner. It was, however I don’t think any of us will be horse riding again anytime soon. And finally, why should we come out and see you guys play live? Because we’re “Scotland’s best party band” so say a few people in the know and almost all of our mums. WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

previews Fiercely heavy electronica
The Algorithm infuses modern metal breakdowns with a menagerie of electronic subgenres such as IDM, chiptune and breakcore to concoct his own potent style of fiercely heavy music. Imagine a mash up electonrica driven breakdowns, djenty guitars, gut wrenching sub wobs and glitchy melodies all working together to fluidly pummel your head into the future. Sounds fun, right? FOR FANS OF: HACKTIVIST / MONUMENTS / AFTER THE BURIAL

Summery songs to make you nostalgic
Old school blues are brought back to life with Carrack’s jazz-organ infused setlist. He has performed with some of the biggest bands including Roxy Music and Mike & The Mechanics but has had his best success going solo, touring both in the UK and US. Embracing the use of brass instruments and brooding blues, Carrack’s performance is sure to be a mesmorising and memorable experience. FOR FANS OF: SIMPLY RED / PAUL YOUNG / ERIC CLAPTON
Punk rockers to sing along to
Brilliantly accessible rock anthems, filled with lyrics that have a universal reach, Lower than Atlantis’ melodies reach peaks of infectiousness rarely scaled by punk rock geezers from Watford. With a new album out in September, don’t miss your chance to catch LTA ahead of their Reading & Leeds appearance.

DENDERA
Fastly becoming one of the most recognised bands for their intense performances, this 5-piece band have perfected the balance between classic metal and balls out rock. Led by the frontman Ashley Edison, with a combination of Serj Tankian roar and Bruce Dickinson wail, backed by the gunning rhythm of Stephen Main & Tony Fuller on guitar, it’s no surprise that their performances are truly alive.
JUL 31 | JOINERS FOR FANS OF: BODY CORE / IRON MAIDEN / ARTIZAN German industrial beats at their best DIE KRUPPS Formed in 1980 in Dusseldorf, over the years they have produced krautrock-tinged metalbashing industrial, old-school ebm, industrial electro and, most recently, industrial metal/neue deutsche härte music. So it’s fair to say they have a pretty extensive back catalogue. Heavy on beats and electronic sounds you can expect to get your NINcher dance on with a full on industrial party. Heavy blues rock n rollers
This 2 piece band make a lotta noise for their size. Originally hailing from Australia, Jimmy O (Vocals & Guitar) and Mikey Sorbello (Drums & Noises) met in the famous Tin Pan Alley. 3 days after meeting in a studio for a jam they played their first gig at the 100 Club in London and the rest, as they say, is history. It’s groovy, bluesy rock and roll and frankly, it’s got us excited. FOR FANS OF: ROYAL BLOOD / THE UNION / QOTSA
Classic raawk with a twist
The Liverpudlian-based band has had an incredible heap of bad luck, with members of the band taking a hike and nearly getting dropped from their label. But, what goes down, must come up. And, just after finishing their tour with HIM and performing across India, they’ve now released their tenth successful album. Awesomely experimental and great on stage, this is a show not to miss. Cool pop-rock that gets you ON YOUR FEET
Named after their grandfather’s gang during WWII, the band certainly know about overcoming adversity. Last year, they toured with Mallory Knox and Lower Than Atlantis, before playing Download and Slam Dunk Festival. Fast-paced and packed with singalong choruses and rousing beats, it’s hard not to jump when they start playing. FOR FANS OF: KIGH / MALLORY KNOX/ ALL TIME LOW
Killer riffs, ear shredding solos and huge hooks all delivered with a no bullshit attitude and a tight as hell live show! JETTBLACK have taken their influences that lie in eighties and early nineties rock and metal and given them a fresh lease of life, carefully crafted songs oozing with melody , power and unparalleled catchiness. This is rock and roll that will stand the test of time. FOR FANS OF: HEAVEN’S BASEMENT / BLACK SPIDERS / AIRBOURNE

OCT 13 | JOINERS Anthemic old school punk rock
The northern accent in lead vocalist, George Mitchell’s vocals’ reflect the band’s unapolagetic gritty post-punk attitude and gives them the authenticity they deserve. Already this year, they have toured with Franz Ferdinand and won best music video at the NME awards. Punchy, aggressive and truly demanding of your attention, Eagulls are bringing punk to pop rock and bringing it brilliantly.

OXJAM SOUTHAMPTON 2014
IS COMING!
The ever popular Oxjam festival returns Friday 17th to Sunday 19th October. This cracking multi-venue event is organised to raise funds for Oxfam and tackle local and national poverty. The Joiners, Mango Bar, The Art House, Mettricks and Goblets are already signed up to get involved this autumn. Each venue will cater for specific genres of music including a range of bands, acoustic acts and world music. There will also be exclusive performances from DJs, poets, dance companies and burlesque performers to represent the wider, diverse field of creative arts rooted within the south. This month organisers are holding a series of fundraiser gigs from Friday 25th to Sunday 27th July so there’s plenty of opportunity for everyone to get involved. Oxjam Takeover Manager Gary Munday explains the reason why drumming up support is so important: “There are two sides to this popular event. Firstly, raise money for a very worthy cause. The other is that we are extremely passionate about raising the profile of local talent in Southampton but in order for this to happen we need people to spread the word. Whatever your musical style or creative arts interest, we’d love to hear from you!” Last year’s event raised over £3k for Oxfam minus expenses for promotions and venue costs so it’s hugely important that the city (yes, that means you) get involved. The festival promises to be great value for money! One wristband gets you into all the participating venues, meaning that punters can wander within the city on that day and be able to catch a variety of performances. Want to know more? ones to watch
Who are your biggest influences? We source our sound on some of the classic Pop-Punk bands such as Blink 182, Sum 41 and New Found Glory but add a mixture of newer flavours such as Four Year Strong, Don Broco and The Story So Far. What have you got lined up for 2014? We’ve taken some time off so far this year to write with our two new members, Ryan and Sonny, for our debut album. The album “Take To The Streets” will be release in August along with a music video and a UK tour to follow. Until then we are playing Basingstoke Live Mainstage on the 12th July and The Joiners on the 25th July for Kids Can’t Fly’s last ever show!
Formed in late 2010, We Deny are fast becoming popular faces on the local music scene, unashamedly blasting out their upbeat, rocky sounds with a huge dose of pop-punk flavour. Their energizing performances coincide with their upbeat set list to make them an act to watch! Following a successful summer of shows in 2011, sharing stages with the likes of The Headstart, OPM, Kids Can’t Fly, Adelaide, Kyoto Drive, Who’s Driving? Bears Driving! and many more, We Deny released their first E.P in July 2012 for free download from their soundcloud. At the moment they’re buried deep in writing and recording for their debut album and are set to take the live stage by storm with appearances at Basingstoke Live and opening for Kids Can’t Fly’s last EVER Southampton show. They sure have an exciting 2014 ahead…..with a track release as part of a number of compilation albums, such as: ‘Wake Up Action! (Crazy Pop Punk Party)’ and ‘Punkalicious Volume Three’, available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Deezer and in stores in the US and a video for their début single ‘Here’s To Never’ due for release by the end of the year it’s a wonder they had time to talk to us at all! We managed to nab five minutes with guitarist Sean Page to find out a little bit more…
Your album launch is in August. Is it finished? What can we expect? The new album is a mix of a few songs we’ve been playing together for a while and some brand new ones. We are still recording the album making every song fast, bouncy and catchy hopefully to keep the listeners playing it! What is it about pop punk that you love so much? We love it because it has the passion and enthusiasm of rock, but it’s loads more fun. What are you guys doing when you’re not being We Deny? Three of us live together so we work all week and party at our house at the weekends as long as we don’t have a gig! If you could go on tour with anyone, who would it be? Don Broco or Four Year Strong, anyone who’s up for a party! Where do you see We Deny in five years’ time? Hopefully touring, playing festivals and adding another album to the list! Finally, why should we come check out your live shows? Because live we get to have a party to our music to a crowd of people! Plus we occasionally give out freebies like merch and CDs to the good crowds! Cheers! Words: Zan Lawther
So, who are you and what do you all do in the band? We Deny consists of five members: Loren as lead singer, Tom as drummer, Sean as Rhythm Guitarist and two new members - Sonny on Bass and Ryan on Lead guitar. Describe your music in three words… Anthemic Melodic Rock!
