The New Forest’s intimate and luxurious festival Set in the glorious New Forest, Festibelly is fast becoming one of the UK’s most charming, intimate and grassroots festivals. A kaleidoscope of music, theatre, arts, fine food and feasting awaits those that journey to Lymington this July. With a focus on local produce and homegrown talent festival goers will be welcomed with open, loving arms into this most relaxed affair. Now in its sixth year, Festibelly is once again providing music lovers with an eclectic bill jam-packed with up and coming names and break out artists alongside some firm festival favourites. Already announced are the fantastic Hudson Taylor (we chat to them a little later on). Brothers Harry and Alfie have been honing their stirring folk-pop sound over a series of rapturously-received singles and are on the verge of a big breakthrough, having amassed a huge underground following. They’ve toured with Jake Bugg and Kodaline and supported the Rolling Stones at Hyde Park. They are currently finishing their debut album, which will be released in the autumn so you can bet your bottom dollar you’ll be seeing them everywhere real soon. Also on the menu for this musical feast is Reggae DJ icon David Rodigan, joined on the dub themed Saturday afternoon by Bristol collective Jus Now and ‘Belly favourites Reggae Roast. The line-up also contains hotly tipped Femme and Mighty Oaks and welcomes back raucous folk troubadours Skinny Lister and electronic-soul trio Dems. Festibelly hot-picks Mausi, Wild Smiles, Ginger & The Ghost and Lexy & The Kill are names you will also be hearing a lot more from soon. As part of its ongoing commitment to supporting new and emerging local artists, Festibelly has been busy hosting a series of warm up events across the New Forest and Hampshire region. Bands and musicians of all types were selected to play across various local venues, all vying for the chance to join the bill for the Festibelly weekend. But it’s not all about the music. 2014 sees the addition of a brand new bar stocked with fine festival tipples, from craft ales to decadent cocktails. A new dining experience is offered for those wanting to get off their feet and indulge in an extravagant three course feast, prepared and hosted by some fantastic New Forest foodie institutions, alongside culinary masterclasses and belly-rumbling bake offs. The Owlery, a space dedicated to wee Festi-critters, returns bigger and better in 2014 ensuring that the festival-goers of the future are well looked after throughout the weekend.

We had a chat with the lovely Andy Bell, founder of the Festibelly magic and all round nice guy because, well, who else is better placed to explain to us exactly why we should be booking our tickets and heading down to Lymington this July? What made you first decide to start a festival? The festival actually started as a birthday party - a few friends’ bands performing and a couple of tipis in a field, and then combined with a general hunger for a more intimate and thoughtful festi, starting our own seemed like a no brainer! Why the New Forest? It’s an absolutely stunning area and yet it’s amazing how many people who live in the UK have never explored it - there’s a real sense of adventure driving through the Forest with the wild ponies and cattle roaming, like stepping back in time and completely escaping what you left behind - and that’s exactly the experience you want when going to a festival. Traditionally you’ve had a keen eye for booking bands on their way up. Who should we be looking out for this year? Hopefully all of them! We always make a point of supporting new talent and generally just booking music that we love. If I had to pick some personal faves I’d say Charlie Cunningham is definitely one to watch - amazing songwriting and completely unique sound. Dios Mio as well - totally captivating & emotional but with a grungy edge. You’re also a supporter of local artists. Tell us about the ‘Festibelly Local’ shows… Festibelly is first and foremost about supporting local artists and the general community, as much as possible. By hosting the local warm-up events it’s meant we’ve discovered so much incredible music that otherwise we wouldn’t have had

the opportunity to hear first-hand. We’re programming a stage at the festival for the whole day with the artists that we’ve been able to discover! For festival-goers that have never been to Festibelly before, what can they expect? A completely grassroots festival, bite-size portions of what, we think, makes a great festi - eclectic and fantastic music, totally relaxed and friendly atmosphere, top quality food and music, weird and wonderful venues and plenty of silliness. Can we bring the kids and what is there to keep them entertained? Definitely! Kids are very much a part of the festival and this year we’re expanding our kids’ area with more silliness - plenty of workshops, fancy dress, kids’ theatre etc. Is there anything else new for 2014? Yep, we’re teaming up with The Craft Beer Co. for a brand beer tent and venue, which will be a chilled spot to sample a range of amazing craft beers and also witness some of the more alternative entertainment: comedy, cabaret, theatre and more. And finally, how much do you love your job? What would you be doing if it wasn’t Festibelly? The day that I start calling this a ‘job’ I won’t be doing it! WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

There is an endearing simplicity to Hudson Taylor that underpins almost everything they do. Why did these two Irish brothers begin playing music together? Well, because their father told them to. Why did they start busking? Because their mother had lost her job and they wanted to make some money. And how do they write their deceptively straightforward folk-pop songs? Well, there isn’t an easy answer to everything. There is a refreshing lack of conceit to Harry and Alfie – Hudson Taylor is their surname– that’s at the heart of their music. Theirs is a breezy easy-come-easy-go approach, perfect for the forthcoming festival season. Growing up in Dublin, they were brought up in a house that was rarely silent. Their dad, a trumpet and keyboard player in a ‘60s brass band, would feed them a cocktail of classics and jazz standards. Harry began playing the trumpet aged 3 and had moved onto the piano by the time he was 6. Alfie, meanwhile, was an Irish champion dancer as a child. But their story really started on a caravan park not far outside Venice. “We played a White Stripes song, a Beach Boys song, Wonderwall, stuff like that,” says Alfie. “We got drunk for the first time, stayed up really late and people really enjoyed it. That was our first musical bond.” When So, you’ve got a pretty busy summer ahead! How does it feel to be in such high demand? Harry: Ha it’s great! Yeah we’ve got a mad summer ahead of us. I can’t wait, it’s going to be a blast though. Alfie: Yeah, we’re really looking forward to it - it’s basically a summer full of festivals and then our album is out in September, so exciting times! Do you actually enjoy going to festivals? Alfie: yeah we love them, it’s the energy - it’s just that whole summer festival feeling, you can’t beat it. We’ll have the lads [in the band] with us too and we’re all really good mates so it’s just like a constant road trip where you’re playing music and having a laugh. Has there been a particular moment where you’ve thought ‘this is it, this is actually going to happen’? A moment where everything suddenly changed…. Harry: I don’t think for me there was a particular moment per se because everything we’ve done over the last few years has been about getting to the point where we’re ready to release our album. We’ve done 4 EPs, been on tour and played festivals and worked with some amazing people so it’s all led to this point where our album is actually ready to go, and that feels really, really exciting. Alfie: Yeah I’d say probably now feels like the most excited we’ve been so far, the album is there, it’ll be released in September and people will be able to hear it and get a sense of the journey we’ve been on over the last few years I hope. Do you two ever argue? Alfie: No not really at all, the odd time we’d disagree about something but nothing major. What’s the worst thing one of you did to the other as a child? Alfie: Oh God we were brutal to each other when we were little, just ask our mum! Not sure what the worst thing we ever did to each other was but whatever either of us did we always both got the blame. I think because we’re so close in age and we went everywhere together our parents just figured no matter which one might have started something it was likely we were both involved so we’d both get punished regardless!

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | JUNE 2014

they got back to Dublin they set up a YouTube account and began uploading videos of their covers. Busking seemed a good option; they already had the songs and just needed to take them out of the house. Soon enough, and via a sign they erected whilst playing one of their busking sessions, more and more people were viewing their YouTube channel. All the while, they’d begun writing their own songs too. “We’d done a song that was just us, stripped-down with no drums. There was something about it,” explains Alfie. “Even though we sometimes have drums now, that song is where our sound came from. It was just honest.” Their debut Battles EP, released in August 2012, made an impact in Hudson Taylor’s quietly compelling way, going to number 1 on iTunes Ireland and no.14 in iTunes UK purely as a result of word-of-mouth. They play their acoustic guitars with a buzzing vibrancy, their songs all static strums and lovelorn vocals driven with the sort of desperate, hopeful energy that only young men whose dreams are coming to life possess. Their lyrical themes go from the “typical lad stuff – girlfriends and ex-girlfriends” to the struggle of moving to London last year. “We want to be known as a live band,” says Harry. “We plan on touring constantly… forever.” For the brothers who haven’t known anything else for the past five years, sitting still is not an option. A brave new world awaits and it all kicks off this festival season at Festibelly. Harry: Ha! True! I think it’s probably taught us to always have each other’s backs though in a weird way! What’s the best thing about making music with your brother? Alfie: I think we’ve developed a strong understanding and respect for each other’s strengths as musicians and neither of us would ever deny the other one their input or ideas creatively, I’m not sure if that’s just because we’re brothers but I suppose that helps! Harry: Yeah and I think working with your family is actually great because you don’t have to have any airs and graces in front of each other or worry that you’ll offend the other one because they know exactly who you are. It’s also nice that wherever we go and whenever we meet new people we have each other so it’s never lonely! You moved to London last year, how’s that been? Harry: Yeah it’s great, we’re really settled in now. It was hard in the beginning leaving our family, living on our own and getting used to that, but we’ve got a great network of friends and people around us so we’re really comfortable here now. There’s still nothing like going home though! What one thing do you miss most from back home in Dublin? Alfie: Our family and friends obviously, and then just the people in general mainly - there’s nothing like the way people will talk to you and tell you stories at home, it’s magical - you can get in a taxi or get talking to someone in the pub or waiting for the bus and the next thing they’ll have you in stitches laughing or bawling your eyes out. It’s hard to explain but there’s nothing like it. Harry: And Guinness of course! It just not the same outside of Ireland and it definitely helps people’s ‘stories’ get a little more interesting! Ha! When you were playing covers, what was your favourite song to play? Harry: We’ve always loved playing covers, it comes from our busking days but some of our favourites would be Irish songs like ‘Monto’ and ‘Rattlin Bog’ they’re just so much fun to play. Why should we come and check you out this summer? Harry: Well our set will basically be all album songs so it’ll be a good preview we hope! WORDS ZAN LAWTHER

HUDSON TAYLOR

If you could collaborate with anyone, living or dead, who would it be? I used to have a strange obsession with Elvis when I was little. Pop-tarts, pop-corn, Popeye or popping candy? Definitely popcorn! The cinema experience is not complete without it. I love having girly sleep overs with my friends as well and I definitely get the popcorn out if we watch a good rom com. What’s on your iPod RIGHT NOW? Kelis’ new album Food! She was in the same rehearsal studio as me the other day as i walked in playing her album. That was pretty surreal! I’m a massive Kelis fan and her new album is really lovely. What’s your favourite snack? Nuts! I love them, I eat them every day! Pecans are my favourite at the moment. When was the last time you cried, and what was the reason? I was chopping an onion making a curry yesterday. Does that count? You’re playing lots of festivals this summer, do you have a favourite? I love Glastonbury, that was my first ever festival experience when I was 18. The quality of music was incredible and I discovered lots of new bands there too. What’s your standard festival outfit? I love a good playsuit, they’re so easy to fling on, and a pair of Hunterwells because they’re so comfortable, they won’t hurt your feet walking around in them for 3 days, mine have lasted years. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to? I remember seeing ‘The Beat’ which is a ska band from the 2tone era at Brixton Jamm when I was about 18 and i just remember every single person in the room dancing, even the bar people, even my friends who didn’t dance were dancing. It was infectious and I didn’t even know their music, I just went along with a friend who wanted to see them. Kittens or puppies? Puppies I have to say. I have cats and a dog and my dog is a lot more friendly. You’re faced with a choice: never kiss anyone ever again OR be allowed to kiss whoever you want but first you have to snog a tearful Ian Beale (Eastenders). What do you do? I’d have to go for Ian, he’s not that bad is he? Snow covered mountain top or warm sandy beach? The beach all day every day. What three things will you definitely be taking with you on tour? A travel pillow! (You never know when you’ll need to catch up on sleep), an iPod dock (I’m one of those people who have music playing in a room at all times) and some fluffy slipper socks (gotta be cosy on the tour bus). What’s your favourite song to dance to? ‘The Cure and the Cause’ by Fish Go Deep (Dennis Ferrer Remix). What’s your musical guilty pleasure? Abba. My mum is an Abba fan so they were always playing in the house so they make me think of good old times when I hear them and i can’t help but like them now.

After their special sell-out 10th Anniversary shows at The Royal Albert Hall and Manchester Bridgewater Hall, award-winning big band Bellowhead are continuing the celebrations with a whole heap of festival shows this summer and their biggest ever UK tour in November. Since they got together in 2004, Bellowhead have occupied a unique place in Britain’s musical landscape: a blistering 11-piece band fusing folk, funk, rock, world, jazz, music hall and classical music, they have placed themselves at the cutting edge of the contemporary music scene while harnessing all the power and

mystery of English and European musical traditions. Their most recent album ‘Broadside’ careered into the album charts at number 16, spawned 3 play-listed singles on BBC Radio 2 and was voted ‘Best Album’ atthe 2013 Folk Awards. But while their recorded exploits have gone from strength to strength, it’s their explosive, spectacular and theatrical live shows that win the most acclaim. 5-times winner of ‘Best Live Band’ at the Radio 2 Awards, Bellowhead have transported folk music into hitherto unknown territory and spearheaded the new folk boom. They are “the greatest live act in Britain” says BBC Radio 2’s Simon Mayo and the hordes of fans that treat every gig as a party clearly agree.

We nabbed a few minutes with Oboe/Fiddle player and local Hampshire lad Paul Sartin to find out more… Where did the band name come from? The bellow bit is from the bellows part of an odeon, a small accordion and lots of famous English bands have ‘head’ at the end of their name - Radiohead, Portishead etc, so we thought we’d do the same.

What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t in a band? I like writing...music books mostly, so probably more of that. Or just somehow becoming incredibly rich, sitting by a pool somewhere drinking gin for the rest of my life.

You have a rather unusually large number of band members, do you find this makes writing a more difficult process, or does it make it easier having so many creative minds and ideas? It’s not been a problem so far, there is no treading on toes. It’s been very beneficial to have 11 minds. We don’t all sit in a room and jam together though typically - usually one member has an idea, brings it to the rest of us and we tweak it, adding our own ideas till everyone is happy. We do get together and rehearse whenever we can but not that often as we are scattered all over the UK so we tend to do things electronically.

What is it do you think that has aided the longevity of the band? 10 years is a rare accomplishment in itself. Partly that there are so many of us, so there are so many creative ideas. If one person dries up there is someone else to take their place. We’ve got a momentum going - we’re still progressing as a band, playing bigger and bigger shows, and making a good enough living from it. The novelty and uniqueness of what we’re doing helps too I think - there’s a current thirst for non-manufactured music, and there’s an integrity and history to our music.

Your 10th anniversary album ‘Revival’ is out at the end of June, what can we expect? Well it’s a continuation of our work from the last 10 years - it’s traditional, English music. We’ve been chewing it up and spitting it out and seeing what happens. We’ve recorded this new album in a slightly different way - writing and working from home before sending ideas out to everyone else to work on, and we had Rupert Christie on board to produce, which is a new relationship for us. It’s traditionally Bellowhead but fresh sounding. Looking at your tour dates you have some great festival appearances coming up as well, what do you look forward to most about festivals? It gives us the chance to see other bands because when we’re touring we often don’t get to watch other bands. At festivals we can. You get to see some beautiful places too; at Wickerman Festival in Scotland for example you are surrounded by stunning scenery that just adds to the experience. Those are the benefits of playing festivals. Any you’re especially looking forward to? I’m looking forward to CarFest. It’s a return visit as we played last year as well. It’s a Radio 1 sponsored event run by Chris Evans for Children in Need. It’s really cool - great music and vintage vehicles, and Chris usually around jollying everyone on. Plus the southern location is practically on my doorstep in the hamlet next door to where I live [Laverstock, Hampshire for anyone who’s interested - Ed].

SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | JUNE 2014

What’s the ultimate band goal, or do you think you’ve already achieved it? I don’t think we could ever achieve it. I don’t think any band ever does really. I’d love a guest slot on The Muppets though, that’s one of my ultimate goals. I’m a massive Muppets fan and that would be truly next level. You know you’ve really made it if you’re on The Muppets. If another band were to cover one of your songs which one would you like it to be, and which band would cover it? Would like to hear a glam rock or prog band doing folk and covering some of the new material on the album, so Queen. Would love to hear Freddie doing one of our songs. Perhaps Bryan May could take the fiddle solo on electric guitar. Tell our readers why they should come to one of your upcoming shows. Because it’s great fun, a party. We have a party on stage every night and the audience always join in. And everyone leaves with a big smile on their face!

festival round up

FESTIVAL ROUND UP

TON SOUTHAMP

MUSIC

Did you know that music festivals are believed to go all the way back to ancient Greece in the 10th century BC? Ethereal deities, rather than rock gods, were honoured though times haven’t changed so much with the recent emphasis placed on looking your absolute best (weather permitting!) in the field. Dry shampoo has been around since the 70’s but last year Asda reported sales were up a whopping 37% as we all struggle to keep our barnets fresh for five days without a shower!

THE BEST OF THE REST... Get down to Walpole Park for Gosport’s Community Waterfront Festival from 18 – 20 July for only £2 on the gate. Alright, it’s not really Hampshire but Truck Festival in Oxford is so good it’s worth travelling for. This year’s festivities take place 18 – 20 July and features an eclectic mix of rock, folk and indie music. Charlton Park plays host to WOMAD again this year from 24 – 27 July. Music, Arts and Dance from across the globe congregate in beautiful grounds! Camp Bestival returns to Lulworth Castle 31 July – 3 August with a Circus theme. Family focussed with over 100 things for kids to do and special emphasis on fancy dress, this year’s are headliners De La Soul, James and Basement Jaxx. Billed as the only indoor-outdoor festival in the area, Westival returns to the West End Centre in Aldershot from 1 - 3 August with The Computers to headline. BoomTown Fair, possibly the craziest of all the festivals literally divides an entire town into a melee of the weird and wonderful – with a different fancy dress theme in each part of town, put on your explorer’s hat and dive in 7 – 10 August at Matterley Estate. Wickham Festival returns 14 – 17 August with Bellowhead, Steve Earle & the Dukes and Oysterband already announced. Multiple options for attending the full camping extravaganza or one off evenings and fun for all the family. The Star Inn at Alton presents the Bentworth Blues Weekend 15 – 17 August, 29 acts over 3 days. Freshfields returns to New Milton this time as a 2 day event 16 – 17 August. For just £15 there are now five stages of live music for you to investigate! Chris Evans’ Carfest South returns to Lavestoke Park Farm, Hampshire for the August Bank Holiday weekend. Those lucky enough to have nabbed tickets can expect great music and fabulous cars all in aid of Children in Need. Also over the August Bank Holiday weekend, Reading Festival marks its territory with an absolutely stonking line up - prepare to get messy! Saturday 23 August the fabulous Somerley House hosts a relaxed all day affair with beers and live music. Victorious Festival is back with a bang at Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard 23 – 24 August with a stellar music line up, kids deck, real ale festival and boutique market for only £15 a day early bird. Gosfest held in Walpole Park, Gosport from 27 August features something for every taste with tribute acts covering all genres – and entry is only £2 a day! Set on a working farm in Plaitford, Hampshire the New Forest Folk Festival takes place 28 - 31 August. Homemade food, real ales, music, falconry, dray horses and even morris dancers ensures a laid back feel to this festival. The Flaming Lips, Wild Beasts, Fleet Foxes and more head up The End of the Road Festival in Salisbury. With 4 stages, a cinema tent, comedy, workshops a healing field, art installations, literature talks, a hidden library and piano in the woods and a games area there’s lots to enjoy, 29 – 31 August. Butserfest, an alcohol free festival aimed at young people is now in its 8th year. Held in Queen Elizabeth Country Park nr Petersfield and featuring bands alongside activities and inflatable fun, this year’s festival takes place on Saturday 13 September. One day, One City, One Street – head down to Southsea Fest on 14 September 2013 for the best in local and emerging talent. 19 – 20 September Bisley Pavilion in Woking is taken over by Undercoverfest. With free camping and two stages of music over two days there’s plenty to keep you busy as we wave farewell to festival season for another year.

previews Fuzzy riffy rockers

Little Barrie have been growing up in the shadows for 15 years now. Slowly honing their sound and crafting their art this London based trio combine blues, rock, soul and funk into a gorgeous melting point similar to 60’s icons like Traffic and Cream. It’s a loose and groovy earthyiness that layers their dirty guitars and transports you to a higher ground. FOR FANS OF: WHITE DENIM / THE VINES / THE GO! TEAM

LITTLE BARRIE

JUN 13 | THE CELLAR

Blues with violins and vivacious vocals

As a rock and blues guitarist, McManus has it all. He’s fresh, fierce and flamboyant all at the same time, a true master with the six string. This comes across in spades with The Band – technically flawless, with not only guitar riffs that can make the eyes water, but a dash of Irish through the violin tracks and some mellifluous vocal work, making them a very listenable and likeable outfit. FOR FANS OF: NATCHEZ / THE TEXAS FLOOD / ALBANY TOWN

Death metal meets Egyptian myth

Understandably, Nile have gained attention for the extreme technicality and complexity of their face meltingly awesome guitar melodies that cut through you like a knife. Add to this lyrics that explore and reference the traditions and tales of ancient Egypt and you’ve got a truly unique brand of death metal that is both conventional and distinctive in equal measure.

Imagine if Richard Cheese seduced each of the Andrews Sisters and each had a little lounge baby…..well TLK would be the result. Taking popular and unusual songs and re-working them into an even more unusual style, there are plenty of laughs to be had with these ladies. Fred Durst loves them, so don’t miss your chance to catch them for FREE ahead of their Glastonbury and Sonisphere festival shows. FOR FANS OF: RICHARD CHEESE / LIMP BIZKIT / PUPPINI SISTERS

KIDS CAN’T FLY

After selling out their final hometown show in a matter of days Kids Can’t Fly have added a second Joiners date to finish things off with a bang. Having been around the block for a while now, and with a sound that blends pop-punk, rock and ska in a gorgeous cocktail, it’s no wonder they have gathered a number of followers over the years. Hum along while you headbang

With the addition of new singer, Courtney LaPlante, there’s a new energy that courses through IWABO’s recent album, Late For Nothing. The hallmarks of their whacked-out style remain present. Moments of throat-cutting metal aplenty juxtaposed with eerie electronics, jazzed-out time signatures, zany rhythms, and interludes of Carnivale-esque bliss. FOR FANS OF: NORMA JEAN / WBTBWB / BORN OF OSIRIS

Raw young talented singer-songwriter

RAE MORRIS

This 19 year old singer-songwriter from Blackpool recently found a voice she didn’t know she had. Make your own comparisons, but be sure to notice a girl of maturity beyond her years. Cleverly matching her inimitable voice to songs of new experiences, those defining challenges like love and not always being able to have the answers. Rae is the epitome of raw and claims nothing else.

Death-core American quintet

With a sound as foreboding as the Hungarian war lord which their band name tips its hat to, Attila are sure to delight metal and death-core fans alike. Acidic and abrasive vocals epitomise this bands’ sound, which cut through the air with ear-drum piercing ferocity, whilst guitars and drums pulsate along like a call to arms.

American Head Charge, although gaining press for their bizarre on-stage goings on, have a repertoire that is both grand and grimey, whilst headliners Soil walk the line somewhere between harsh abrasive melodies with emotional vocals. (hed) pe are set to mix it up a bit, with a mixture between punk, hiphop and rap that is akin to a roundhouse kick to the head. Truly epic.

Fame came as a member of the prog rock band Genesis, between 1971 and 1977, when he left to pursue his solo career. ones to watch Have you got any other festivals lined up this summer? We are playing the Ejector Seat Festival on the 14th June, which we have always liked the idea of playing. You’ve been in Europe recently, how did that tour come about?

Formed in 2009, Maths and the Moon are a three piece alternative rock band from the south coast consisting of Andy Fielder (Guitars/Vocals), Luke Taplin (Drums) and Matt Hirst (Bass). Their debut album ‘Night Train Daydream’ was released in September last year and caused a bit of a stir in the underground psychedelicrock scene… ‘’Welcome to the world of Maths and the Moon, a UK group who play dark psych music. Yes, that’s dark, because while their music pulls you through a drug fuelled landscape full of shifting shapes as usual, their sound and vocal is tinged with menace.’’ - Supajam With slots at Ejector Seat and Blissfields festivals already confirmed, a European tour booked for October and a new EP promised for summer, these boys sure know how to keep busy. We caught up with Andy to find out more about just how much they like not fitting in…

We had been getting some good exposure from the album last year in Europe, and we were keen to get out there to play as soon as it was possible. Mirrorman Agency booked us a good run of gigs through some great promoters that were into what we are doing. Who do you guys like to listen to? Sonic Youth, Pixies, Nirvana and The Velvet Underground are pretty staple influences at the m oment. But otherwise loads, and anything: Old punk bands, rockabilly, krautrock and anything weird and wonderful. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to? We went to the Deerhunter curated ATP last year, their shows were incredible so perhaps that. Or seeing the reformed Stone Roses, that was pretty special and quite surreal too. How did your album release go last year? It was exciting to finally release something we’d spent a long time working on. We were thrilled to read lots of positive reviews and that people understood where we were coming from with our music. Lots of people played our songs on radio shows and podcasts which was really encouraging for a self-release. It was all really positive. Are you planning to record more?

Hi, who are you and who does what in your band? Hello we are Maths and the Moon, a 3 piece band from Southampton. Andy plays guitar and sings, Matt plays bass and Luke’s on drums. If you had to describe your sound in three words what would they be?

We are recording a new EP this summer to release in the Autumn. Tell us why we should come check out your show… You should come and check out our show because we will make you feel fuzzy. And fuzzy at a festival is always good! Plus Matt might tell you his pirate joke…

Atmospheric, fuzzy, marshmallow. How did you guys meet? Matt and I met at school. We used to play guitars together as kids and reconvened when we met Luke at the end of the century, who had been living less than half a mile away from us the whole time. We have been making music together ever since. You’re playing Blissfields this year, which stage are you on? Yes we are. We are playing in The Hustle Den which looks great. Are you excited? Very much so, it’s been 5 years since we last played a festival. And that was Blissfields in our old band.
