There is nothing more heavy metal than a group of Black Sabbath fans performing hard rock songs with a frickin word championship wrestler as a front man. Yes that’s right, its Atlanta’s badass heavy metal band Fozzy, and no it’s not fronted by the bear from the Muppets, but by WWE’s finest Chris Jericho. Once upon a time they were a cover band called Fozzy Osbourne, but six studio albums later Fozzy are rock legends in their own right and they’re back on the road doing what they do best – blowing our minds with the fury of rock! With the release of Do You Wanna Start A War we’re pretty excited to hear the masterpiece live. But first up we have the pleasure of chatting to the legend Chris Jericho before Fozzy’s tour hits the UK! Jericho doesn’t only put on an outstanding performance in the ring but when he’s alongside band mates Rich Ward, Frank Fontsere, Billy Grey, Jeff Rouse there is no stopping these metallers. It is gonna be a knockout folks!
Firstly how would you describe Fozzy in 3 words? Metallica meets Journey Starting up as a cover band, did you always plan on making your own material and did you ever expect it to become so popular? Well I think every band starts as a covers band really. It was way back probably around 2010 when we started to realise the full potential of Fozzy and make it a priority rather than a side project and to put everything into it that we had. I mean, you can be the biggest band in the world but if you don’t show up, you’re not going to make it anywhere. It’s a lot of work but the success is really gratifying. What’s the most surprising song Fozzy has covered?
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | MARCH 2015
We’ve had a few over the albums. A while back we were sitting backstage in Leipzig on the Anthrax tour and the iPod was on shuffle and ABBA’s SOS came on and we thought that it would make a great and unexpected song to cover for a b-side. Then when we recorded it, it had such a cool vibe that we thought why waste it as a b-side? So it’s on the album and now it might even be a single. But you’ve gotta do something different with it, you know? That’s what Marilyn Manson did with Sweet Dreams, or what Limp Bizkit did with Faith – take it outside of the box. You could cover a Judas Priest song or whatever because it’s a great song but you’re never going to play it as good as Judas Priest so what’s the point? But if you take a great song and give it your own spin then you can really breathe new life into it.
FOZZY
How have fans reacted to the latest release Do You Wanna Start A War? It’s been our highest charting record so far, particularly in the States and we’re still going with it. We’ll be adding more songs and people have really been going nuts for it. If you come to a show on the tour and you haven’t got WAR then you’re going to hear a lot of new songs but they’re pretty catchy and easy to get into and they get great reactions from the crowds. Playing them live is what it’s all about. We’re pretty excited to have Fozzy in the UK, what can fans expect from this tour? This will be the biggest headline tour we’ve ever done, in some of the biggest rooms. We’ve always had a great reputation over in the UK and a great relationship with our UK fanbase. We really feel like the UK is our second home. We know things will be really energetic and really electric and we expect a lot of participation from the crowd and we always get it. I’d say 99.9% of the people who come to a Fozzy show will leave feeling like they had a lot of fun. We are the show. Y’know we don’t have gimmicks or huge pyros and things exploding from the drummer’s head or whatever, we just give it all we’ve got and have fun and the crowd always bring it, so we’re excited to get back to the UK. Do you think that your experience performing in the ring is similar to what you do on stage with the band? Well it’s all part of being a performer. You’ve got to have a connection with the audience, whether that’s in the wrestling ring or on stage. When I got into wrestling I always said I wanted to be the rock n roll frontman. I wanted to be the Paul Stanley or David Lee Roth of wrestling and I included elements of them in my wrestling character. And then I took elements of that into Fozzy. It doesn’t matter what you’re doing, whether it’s wrestling, music, stand-up comedy or Shakesperian theatre you’ve got to know your audience and grab them. If you can do that, then you’ll always have a job! Do you have a most memorable gig or is there one show you’d like to play again? Oooh, probably last year’s Download. 2014 was the first time we played the main stage and even though it was quite early there were so many people there, I think around 40,000 and people were just going crazy. Festivals in general are just legendary and you always want to turn up and destroy and when the crowd are so into it and there’s so many of our Fozzy family out there it’s a great connection. And we really have them to thank for getting us to the main stage. We’ve got a lot of honourable and loyal fans and we never take that for granted. You’re a very busy man, but what do you like to do in your spare time?
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | MARCH 2015
I think sometimes it seems like I’m busier than I am because the things I do come in sections so when I’m not on tour, or not in the ring I’m just hanging out with my kids and my family and doing normal family stuff. You’ve got to strike the balance. Being as successful as you, in both music and wrestling, what advice would you give to others who dream of making it as artists? Follow your dreams and believe in yourself and don’t ever listen to people who say you can’t do stuff. Whatever it is you wanna do – some people want to be rockstars or wrestlers but if you want to be a lawyer or a doctor, then do that and don’t let people tell you you can’t. When I was a kid I told everyone I wanted to be a wrestler AND a rockstar so I had two dreams for them to laugh at and I don’t think you’d have picked me out of a line up as being the kid that would get to do both. People thought I was crazy and I’ve done them both. So believe in yourself and follow your dreams. Do You Wanna Start A War features guest vocals from Christie Cook and Steel Panther’s Michael Starr, how was it working with them? We love to have friends come and join us on our records and we don’t do it for the stunt – if it fits the song, then we’ll always go for it because their involvement makes it a better song. We toured Australia with Steel Panther and Michael came up to me and said ‘I want to be on the next Fozzy record’ and Tonite really fit with his vibe. They’ve got a lot of jokes but they’re such great guys and all such fantastic musicians. In fact, once he was done recording his parts we gave him more lines to sing because we loved what he’d done so much. It really adds a lot to the song. And Christie we’ve known for years. She’s an unbelievable singer. We wanted Unstoppable to be a duet and when we looked around for who we might want to come in on it we thought, why not keep it in the Fozzy family and she really did an incredible job on it. It really brings a different element to it. Is there anyone left that you’d like to collaborate with? I don’t have a list. We don’t really work like that. It’s more about what someone can bring to the song – you have to start with the song, not the other way around. We don’t sit there and think ‘I want Slash to play on my record, which song can he play on?’ we just look at people we know and love and try to keep it all in the Fozzy family and it works pretty great. If you were to have a rap battle, which famous rapper would you chose to rap against? Ghostface Killah. Because he’s one of my favourites. What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever posted on a social media site? The latest thing I can think of is our sound engineer dressed as a...well I’m not sure what he’s dressed as. Go look at our Facebook / Instagram for a stream of unusual stuff and you might spot him in there, somewhere. Have you ever been stuck in a piece of clothing? (Skinny jeans etc.) I’ve never tried to take any of my clothes off...does that count as being “stuck”? If you could breed 2 animals together and defy the laws of nature, what would you create? A bad dog and a good dog, to make an alright dog. How did you decide on the name ‘Two Hands’ for your upcoming LP? It seemed like a good idea at the time. What’s your favourite joke? Q: What would make a lion run faster? A: Metal legs Have you ever wielded a sword? Yeah and it was cool. Very cool. Who in the band would make the best girl? Lianna, as she has all the bits that most girls have. Do you know CPR? If you mean Crassly Programming Robots then yes. If you were Captain of a Ship, what would you name it? The Quell. What would your band name be if I gave you these 5 words to create the name (Darling, Horses, Princess, Riot, Shamble) Darling Horses Princess Riot Shamble. When was the last time you ate a home-grown vegetable? About a week ago. My girlfriend’s dad grows all kinds of things. I eat them. How is the UK tour going with Royal Blood? Very nice thanks! They’re a couple of real good dudes and it’s been a pleasure touring with them. If you could only read a bird watching magazine, a train spotting magazine or a fishing magazine for the rest of your life, which would you chose? Probably the bird one, as they’re like small dinosaurs. You can pick four people to form a band to cover your songs, but they must all be called John. What Johns would you have in your band? John McCartney, John Plant, Jon Homme, and John.

news The Cellar reopens it’s doors this month as THE STAGE DOOR which promises to be a ‘cabaret style fringe theatre venue in the heart of the Cultural Quarter.’
This exciting new venue promises to bring a fresh approach to evening entertainment and dining rolled into one. The Stage Door produces many of their own shows, but will play host to touring shows, children’s theatre, pantomime, dinner style cabaret shows, standup comedy and film screenings, to name but a few. With an eclectic opening line up already boasting names like Joe Black and Mr B The Gentleman Rhymer amongst a variety of cabaret, spoken word and burlesque performances The Stage Door looks like it will occupy a hitherto unfilled niche in Southampton’s broad range of venues. We can’t wait to see what they have in store. That freshly prepared food in the revamped restaurant doesn’t half look good too...

In the wake of Northern Ireland blues and hard rockers The Answer’s upcoming jaunt around the UK and release of their fifth studio album ‘Raise a Little Hell’ (out on the 9th March) we welcomed the opportunity to chat with vocalist Cormac Neeson about the new album, touring and to see if he had any gems of advice for new bands trying to break through…. Your new album ‘Raise a Little Hell’ is out soon, what can fans expect? It’s a record that sounds like we’re having a good time. It sounds like a good rock n roll album, with a bit more light and shade than perhaps our last record. There’s a few more flavours thrown in, it’s quite diverse, but at the same time there’s a freedom to it. We wanted to make this record for us. It sounds like a given of course, but when you’re making an album it’s usual that the record company get into your ear, or the managers get inside your head, or even you know your fans telling you what they loved about the last record and what they didn’t like. You can let all that background noise upset you, and in the past we have maybe done so but this time round we just came in and totally just cleared our minds, had a good time, made a record and the end result is a pretty damn good album if you ask me. It sounds to us like it might have a classic 70s rock
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | MARCH 2015
vibe to it. Do you ever wish you’d be born a bit earlier? No, not at all, I’m very happy to be where I am at this point in time but I do listen to a lot of 70s rock n roll music. I think you can definitely hear those influences permeating through this album. This is our fifth album, when we put our first album out a lot of people would have said it reminded them of Led Zeppelin. After that we kinda almost reacted against that tag a little bit and when we were recording album number 2 ‘Everyday Demons’ we asked ourselves ‘what would Led Zeppelin do? Well then let’s not do that. That was good, that was constructive. It sent us down the path of trying to find our own sound and our own identity, and not pay too much tribute to the bands from 40 odd years ago. Influences are not something you should be ashamed of, you need to strike that balance between letting bands like Led Zeppelin and Free and The Who permeate through your music but also establishing
THE ANSWER
something that is original. If you’re a rock n roll band especially you gotta be original and carve out your own little niche. I think we’ve really struck the balance this time around. It might have taken us 5 attempts but we got there in the end. ‘Raise a Little Hell’ was recorded in Spain. Do you think the change of location had any effect on the whole album process? It all fed into the project. We picked Spain cos we knew it would be a little bit different and a little bit wacky. When we arrived at the studio our producers informed us that the annual fiesta was about to kick off. It was a week of bull running in the morning, drinking all afternoon, bull fights in the early evening and then more drinking for another 12 hours. Round the clock partying. Our days would start with going to the town hall and watching all these crazy Spanish people running from bulls through the town, and then we’d go and have a couple of beers with the locals and get into the spirit of things and then we’d go and work for 12 hours, and then go back out again like midnight that evening, relax and talk about the songs we’d recorded that day. But the entire town had been drinking that entire time so by the time we’d finished our work...the carnage, you wouldn’t believe. It was like St Patrick’s Day, in Dublin, for 7 days in a row. It played a large part in the flavour of the record. You’re running a fan voted poll for the set list for your upcoming tour, are there any songs you’re particularly hoping get chosen? I really don’t mind, but it’s interesting to see some of the stuff people come back with, some really bizarre b-sides we’d almost forgotten about. It’s nice to know people pick up on some of them along the way. The more obscure the better. You’re pulling some great bands out to support you on the tour. Having been given the opportunity to support AC/DC when you were starting out, is it important to you guys to give other bands similar opportunities? Yeah, very much so. We’re taking a band, Bad Touch, out on the road with us. They’re a young band trying to find their way, in similar circles that we’ve been working in. It’s nice to be in a position where we can give opportunities to bands to play to bigger audiences, and it’s great to see them getting up there every night, playing with a hunger and passion for it, and giving it everything they’ve got. It just reminds you of your first ever tour. Again, it’s good to keep getting reminded of that.
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | MARCH 2015
What do you think are the biggest challenges facing new artists today, and have you got any brilliant advice? I suppose the biggest challenge is that no one’s really paying for any music anymore, so it’s getting to a level where you can tour and make enough money where you can do so. When we were starting out if you had potential a record label would take you to a studio and give you money to make your first record, and promote your first tour and really give you a bit of a kick start. We just got the tail end of that but there’s just not enough support around anymore. Record labels only back you if you’re a sure thing, with the odd exception. There are a few independent labels who will take a punt but they don’t have as much money as a major would have done back in the day, so it’s hard to move from the grass roots to a level where you’ve got a chance of it being your job. You have to pull out all the stops, and make sure you make yourself available to get those breaks. It’s still all about building it from the ground up but you gotta be really good to get anybody to really notice you. The advice I would give is to picture yourself in 20 years’ time and make sure you really want to do it, and if you do, to make sure you’re damn good at it. What is it you love so much about touring? I just love getting up on stage and giving it everything I’ve got. It’s a real release for me to jump about like a lunatic and scream my lungs off for an hour and a half. It levels me out. I think I’m a much easier person to deal with after a tour cos I’ve been able to get rid of all my pent up emotion and aggression. What’s 2015 going to be about for The Answer? It’s gonna be about getting out on the road and promoting our new album. Hopefully the gigs are going to be bigger and better. We always try to keep moving forward in this band. We’ve got a really good record full of fantastic songs. We think our fans are really gonna like it but we really hope we can win over some new ones in the process as well. So, a lot of touring. We’re doing the UK, Europe, America, back for festivals in the summer and then back to America again. It’s gonna be busy but it’s gonna be a lot of fun too. Words: Marianne Harris

One of the UK’s funniest females, Gina Yashere, returns to her home country from across the pond with her highlyanticipated brand new show this month. A former lift engineer (yes, really), the multi-award winning comedian is now a true headline act the world over, from Japan to Dubai, Hong Kong to Singapore, Australia to Canada, South Africa to Europe and in America, where she currently resides. In fact she is so busy globe-trotting that we had to catch up with her in Borneo, no less! Having made her comedy debut at the Edinburgh Festival in 1996, it’s the countless TV shows she’s appeared on that have made her one of the most recognisable faces in comedy. She’s been on EVERYTHING from The Lenny Henry Show to Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo, Celebrity Fame Academy and Celebrity Come Dine With Me. Stateside, Gina has guested on American TV shows such as The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, Def Comedy Jam , Comics Unleashed, The Rosie O’ Donnell Show and a regular appearance as a At what age did you discover you could make people laugh? I didn’t realise I’d be making a living from it, that came much later, but as a kid I was always messing around in class at school making people laugh, and all my school reports said that I was disruptive. Always clowning around in class. Obviously I was doing my work first haha, but yeah, I’ve been doing it since childhood.
crap psychic on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. She has also had her own 1 hour stand up special airing on Showtime. But that’s not all. Did you know she was in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Mr In Between, AND she’s starred on the West-End stage in The Vagina Monologues? After losing 5 stone, Gina released her critically acclaimed DVD Skinny Bitch in 2009 and this helped to propel her into the public eye. But what can we expect from the new show when she storms into town? Laugh Riot will explore it all, Gina-style; her recent move to New York and the ridiculous auditions which made her leave Los Angeles. Her new fear of cats after being terrorized by three super intelligent felines at her friend’s house. Being coughed on, stared at and followed in China, and finding herself in a brothel in Singapore. Gina, as always, has plenty of stories to tell in a way that only Gina can tell them and we couldn’t BE more excited about seeing her live in action… sunglasses indoors, it’s friggin night-time DUDE!’, basically taking the piss out of his sunglasses, and then it turned out it was because he was blind.
What did you do before you turned professional as a comedian? I was an engineer, fixing and building lifts. This is what I did before. If I wasn’t a comedian now I’d be building lifts still. I just thought that looks interesting so I’ll do it’.
What’s it been like for you working in a mostly male dominated industry? Well I used to build and repair lifts before I did this. People always asked me ‘was it really hard?’ but I used to work on building sites where there were no female toilet because I was the only female engineer on site, and I used to walk into the men’s room pulling my hard hat over my head . Comedy in comparison is a walk in the park.
Do you prefer TV or live stand up? Live, definitely. You’re not censored, you can say what you want, so live is always my favourite. But TV serves its purposes because that’s what gets people to come see me live.
Do you feel like you fit in as ‘one of the guys’ then? Yeah, I’m not a typical female comedian, all girly and self-deprecating, that’s not the style of comedy I do. If it was the mid 90’s they’d probably call me a ladette.
Just how easy is it to improv, because we imagine it’s not easy at all… Yeah, it’s a skill, because of years of doing stand up and having a certain amount of confidence to be able to come out of the script and mess around, and be able to relax your brain and let whatever comes out of your mouth come out. So yeah, it’s a serious skill to have that’s taken me years to hone.
Who’s your personal favourite comedian? Ohh I’ve got many favourites. Dave Chapelle, Pat Williams, yeah, those are my two favourites.
Is it a case of having a huge bank of material to pull from or does it just flow organically? Improv should be improv. Obviously you might use a live bit you’ve used before but the fun of improv and finding a mote of humour from something that’s totally impromptu is much more fun than just using pre-rehearsed lines. Have you ever improvised anything you’ve instantly regretted, and what the hell do you do about it? Yeah, I remember taking the piss out of a guy walking across the room, it was years ago but I remember I said ‘why are you wearing

You’re in Southampton performing in April, what are you looking forward to most about the show? I LOVED coming to Southampton. I used to perform at Jongleurs Comedy Club and I miss those days. I used to do the double - I’d do Portsmouth and then Southampton the same night. Pulling some late nights. So yeah I’m looking forward to coming back to Southampton and seeing how much it’s changed as I haven’t been there for like 7 years. Words: Marrianne Harris

They smashed through Southampton last year selling out what was then the Mo Club in record time and laying waste to the hundreds of fans that turned out to see them and since then, their star has only continued to rise. A HUGE support slot with none other than Linkin Park in late 2014 saw them playing venues the size of the O2 (two nights in a row!) and frequently saw vocalists Austin Carlile and Aaron Pauley each joining Linkin Park onstage for songs during the headliners’ set, but was unfortunately cut short in January as the tour moved through the USA due to an injury to Linkin Park’s frontman Chester Bennington. Undeterred OM&M carried on, announcing a massive headline run for the UK and Europe and a deluxe version of their hit album Restoring Force and now they’re on their way back for their biggest headline shows to date. Since the 2010 release of their self-titled debut, Of Mice & Men have blanketed rock radio airwaves, garnered critical acclaim and amassed over 20 million YouTube views on the strength of an electrifying sound and live show. This band have been through the ringer, to say the least. With numerous line up changes, health issues and everything else the world has chosen to throw at them, yet they’ve emerged stronger than ever before. You might even say their force has been restored (yes, we know, sorry!) and their new music continues to spread the message of togetherness and hope, something that’s clearly hitting the right spot with fans, whilst their live shows continue to knock audiences sideways with their power and downright slickness. We grabbed a few minutes with drummer Valentino‘Tino’ Arteaga to find out exactly why they can’t wait to get back down to Southampton….
How did it feel to have to disappoint fans when Linkin Park were forced to cancel the end of the Hunting Party tour? Devastating but it was totally out of our control. We wish Chester a speedy recovery and hope that our bands can tour together in the future because it was an awesome experience for all of our fans! Your London show on that tour was a total smash hit – what was that O2 show like for you? Breathtaking! It was one of the most amazing moments to experience as a musician walking out to a roaring crowd of 20k+ fans of rock music in London...and then to do it all over again the next night! It was an absolute rush. You’re headlining some pretty big venues on your UK run this month, what can we expect from the live show? The same intensity fans saw in the arenas with Linkin Park but more intimate. We love engaging the audience and each time we headline it’s a special experience. We’ll be playing songs from our entire catalogue too, not just newer songs, it’s gonna be an amazing concert for OM&M fans new and old. Last time you played Southampton tickets sold out in record time, are you excited about coming back?
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | MARCH 2015
Yes! We had a blast last time so we’re gonna kick it up a notch and really make it even more memorable this time! You’re about to release an extended version of last year’s album Restoring Force, what makes it so special? Well we really wanted to bring Restoring Force “full circle” and expand on many of the ideas we didn’t have enough time to elaborate on in our first album session. So we booked more studio time at home in California and flew our producer out to record 4 more songs that we feel are some of the best songs Of Mice & Men has written and those are included with the repackaging. What are you most looking forward to about touring the UK and what will you miss most from the US? The sunny California weather is always what we miss most about the states, but being on tour in the UK, our fans really make it feel like home! We’re most looking forward to sharing our new music with them and giving them something to talk about all year long. Words: Zan Lawther

news One of our favourite local festivals, the lovely Blissfields, has announced it’s first acts and with names like The Horrors, John Grant, Simian Mobile Disco and Public Service Broadcasting already in the line up we think it would be wise to grab a ticket before it sells out as quickly as last year. ‘Halfway through our second decade and we’re celebrating with a “Somewhere in Time” theme! Honestly we’ve only got planned the best Blissfields Festival ever! More music / areas / happenings / dancing / partying and shenanigans than ever before it’s going to be unmissable.’ say the Blissfields team and we’re very much inclined to believe them!

Breaking out back in the summer of 2013, Forgotten Shores originally set out as a southern rock styled band with hard-hitting drums, technical rock riffs and powerful vocals. After a year or so of gigging they found that their stage presence and live show was getting the crowd moving but the music lacked the reputation they had started to gain; after a small line up change Forgotten Shores have been back and re-writing new material since the end of 2014. New people. New sound. New beginning. Now with a full on in your face metalcore sound, but not like what you’ve heard before, we were frankly blown away by the ferocity of their performance last month at the Talking Heads (supporting the mighty Incite). We caught up with the guys to find out a little bit more… Who are you and what do you do in the band? Nick Taliadoros – Guitarist, I tend to write a lot of the material alongside Harry, I produce and plan what we usually do, but won’t go ahead with anything unless the whole band has all discussed ideas and collaborated together. Harry Farmer – Guitarist, helps write and collaborate with songs. Bobby Brooks – Bass, helps collaborate with the music and production. Reece Hayton – Vocals, Lyricist and merch bitch. Konnor Bracher-Walsh – Drummer and collaborator towards music. How did you guys get together? Nick started out the band wanting to create a southern rock sound and asked Bobby whether he wanted to play bass, we got Harry Involved on guitar and then went through various musicians trying to find a drummer and vocalist. After getting a set up together, we had our vocalist bail 2 weeks before a show so Nick asked Reece (who was front man of The Distance Between – a band Nick and Reece were in before) to do vocals for a practice and to write some lyrics for some songs, he turned up and it was like the puzzle was complete. After a year of gigging our drummer left and Konnor was brought in, at this time we decided to change the sound and our set. And now we’re here. How did you pick your band name? One of the drummers we originally auditioned was really keen when we were starting up and brought with him a list of about 20 different names… Forgotten Shores sounded good…He didn’t make the cut. What’s been your biggest achievement so far? Opening for Incite at the Talking Heads! What’s coming up for Forgotten Shores… We’ve just recorded a Double A-Side at innersound studios and are

currently planning the music video to be released soon! After this we’re finishing the booking for a weekend tour with another band we know! Then looking to tour later in the year with more merch coming out across the year! We already have a second EP written and some final touches are going on top of that! So depending on how well things go depends on when that’s recorded! If you could go on tour with any band, who would it be and why? Parkway Drive…Those guys have an insane stage show and I reckon would be insanely fun to be around! Do you have any other talents other than music? Bobby is definitely an elf from Lord of the Rings, Reece could easily write a manual on GTA 5 for a gameplay walkthrough just from memory, Konnor flies planes! Harry was a FIFA expert and Nick plays basketball…Music really is the main thing to be honest! Tell us 5 things you think we should know about Forgotten Shores…. Always professional. Always have fun. Never a dull moment. Kickass stage show. We will always be up for playing shows! Why should we come check out your live show? There’s bands that are playing awesome shows because they sound good, but don’t move…Then there’s us…We don’t sit still, we go crazy but we sound tight, we have a sound you haven’t heard on the scene currently, we’re always looking for everyone to have fun…If you go to see a band…You’ve paid to see a show…We give you a show! Just look at our Facebook pictures and that says it all!
