It’s that time of year again! The sun is starting to make a much needed appearance and we’re all thinking what a brilliant idea it would be to go and live in a field… And one of our all-time favourite fields, back for its celebratory 15th year, is Blissfields. If you haven’t had the pleasure of experiencing the field of Bliss yet, then don’t delay as tickets are already perilously close to selling out (as they do, every year). Nestled in the gorgeous countryside just outside Winchester, this festival is the perfect blend of relaxed entertainment and all out late night party topped off with lashings of sumptuous food and drink and the opportunity to expand your knowledge or simply pamper yourself stupid. Yes folks, this festival was the festival that defined the term ‘boutique’ and has since grown into an event so much more than that! This year the Blissfields team welcome top name acts such as The Horrors, John Grant, Public Service Broadcasting, Grandmaster Flash, The Correspondents and more as well as returning Blissfields regulars Dub Pistols and Subgiant who perform alongside top local and upcoming artists. This is the place to discover the ‘next big thing’ as each act is carefully chosen by Blissfield’s expert bookers. Not a fan of roughing it outdoors? Well they’ve got that covered too! This year they’ve extended their already magnificent selection of glamping options to include luxurious yurts, the boutique Camel Camp and even a spa. And with the craft area, a cinema, the angel gardens for kids and a sports day for bigger kids all wrapped up into this year’s theme of ‘Somewhere in Time’ well, our bags are already packed. Last one to the Hobgoblin bus gets the beers in!

What’s new for Blissfields 2015? 2015 is going to see theatre, comedy and spoken word coming to Blissfields, with a hugely expanded Amoeba to Zebra Stage hosting show cases of all these art forms during the evening. During the day it will still focus on science and environment discussions under the curation of The Born Free Foundation but the evening will now be a full programme of non-music entertainment. In other areas we’ve concentrated on expanding the music that’s already been proven to be a hit with our crowd, putting a much bigger budget than ever into booking acts. 2015 will once again see growth on the previous year but we know now what our audience love and we’re making sure they get that in bucketfuls! Who are your top tips on this year’s line up? Public Service Broadcasting have always been a big favourite of mine, returning for their second Blissfields after the amazing new album, they can only get bigger. John Grant, such a huge artist but could still get more public recognition to equal the critic’s love he already courts. Songhoy Blues from Mali are going to be a big name at festivals this year, and reflect a growing interest in African music. For a more dance flavoured weekend Novleist, Mele, Eton Messy DJs and from France, Missill spread across three different stages are going to be late night delights! And of course who would miss out on a good skank with One Step Too Late, and a certain Melanie Bliss on vocals!
“We are thrilled to be playing Blissfields again. We played a couple year s back and the vibe is really cool. The line up this year is top notch too. The guys in charge really know what they are doing and ever y year it goes from stren gth to strength” – Alex, Winterhours
This year’s theme is ‘Somewhere in Time’ – what does this mean to you? Ok so I’m a great Sci-Fi nerd and love the spirit of the theme, but it also allows for some fantastic costume ideas and site decoration as well as allowing us to look back at Blissfield’s past and muse on our future.
How does it feel to have reached your 15th Blissfields? Honestly to have started as a party for 50 people in 2001 and now be in a position where we sell out at 5000 still sometimes hasn’t sunken in, but yes it feels good to have succeeded in throwing a good party and to have made so many friends over the years!
ing to Blissfields “We really enjoyed com the friendliest of one was it 3 in 201 , with a great date to ed play ve we’ festivals forward to ing look re We’ . here atmosp main stage the ing play and k bac coming this time - exciting!” asting – Public Ser vice Broadc

“We did an intimate gig for the Blissfields Christmas party and if the festival has any of the warmth and vibrancy of that night then we are in for a treat. I guess it helps that they have a brilliant and, I would say, very sophisticated (ourselves excluded!) line up.” – The Correspondents

We spend most of our summer with a car boot permanently packed, ready for another festival at a moment’s notice. Our top tips for festival survival? Always pack a waterproof jacket and something warm to wrap up in, you can never trust the UK’s weather – baby wipes are essential – never leave the tent without some bog roll in your bag – with gaffa tape and carrier bags you can fix pretty much anything, including leaky wellingtons!

FESTIVAL ROUND UP
Did you know that music festivals are believed to go all the way back to ancient Greece in the 10th century BC? Ethereal deities, rather than rock gods, were honoured though times haven’t changed so much with the recent emphasis placed on looking your absolute best (weather permitting!) in the field. Dry shampoo has been around since the 70’s but last year Asda reported sales were up a whopping 37% as we all struggle to keep our barnets fresh for five days without a shower!
Wolverton Manor hosts Wolverton Folk and Blues Fair on Saturday 16 May raising money for Leukaemia Research and Brighstone School by way of a celebration of all that’s good about our island’s local food & music talent – for only £9 entry at the gate! Celebrate all things arts with Salisbury International Arts Festival - 22 May – 6 June. Spanning across the city you’ll find all things literary, musical and performance based on offer, much of it free! Staying in Wiltshire, the Chippenham Folk Festival takes place from 22 - 24 May, celebrating its 44th year. This festival still retains its ‘village’ atmosphere, and is packed with song, dance, workshops and dance displays. Over 200 events take place within the town centre. Saturday 30 May the Somerley Tea Party is set to fill the ground of the Somerley Estate, Ringwood with the sounds of electronic music. Waterlooville Music Festival is a musical extravaganza aimed at bringing music to the whole of the community. Spread over an entire week from 13 - 21 June and including free daytime concerts, school performances and evening concerts there’s something for everyone culminating in a Last Night of the Proms finale. Boars Bridge Festival near Tadley takes place 20 and 21 June. A charity-focussed festival it boasts live music and a friendly atmosphere.
SOMERLEY TEA PARTY
Billed as the affordable family festival, Gig on the Green Yateley – Saturday 27 June - features top tribute acts and local showcases as well as their very own Battle of the Bands for under 18’s. Whilst that same Saturday, the Engine Rooms bring you Southampton Blues, Rhythm & Rock Festival for only £23 a ticket.
Winchester Hat Fair hits the streets of Winchester from 3 - 5 July. Showcasing a huge range of music, street theatre and outdoor arts and all performances are free – just put your donation in the hat! Lowde Fest returns to Hazeley Bottom on 4 July – 11 hours of non-stop music across two stages, over 70 real ales and ciders, what’s not to love? Basingstoke Live is a FREE two day event taking place in the heart of Basingstoke. The event showcases local artists alongside national and international performers. 2015 headliners have been announced as The Qemists and Mungo Jerry – 11/12 July. The Isle of Wight has become a central hub for festival season. This year the island boasts The I.O.W. Festival 11 – 14 June featuring headliners Blur, Fleetwood Mac, The Black Keys and the Prodigy, VDub Island, celebrating all things VW, 23 – 27 July and Bestival is back at Robin Hill 10 – 13 September with the likes of Duran Duran, The Chemical Brothers and The Jacksons. We’ll leave you to decide which is your favourite!

FEATURE
It’s nearly time folks – Southampton’s hottest new festival rolls into town this month with Captain Rob da Bank at the helm and a mission to render Southampton Common completely unrecognisable as it’s turned into a magical paradise for the quirky and sublime. Taking its lead from its award-winning siblings Bestival and Camp Bestival, Common People’s line-up is a feast of the finest that the live music and DJ scenes have to offer, from legendary stalwarts of the festival scene such as Fatboy Slim, The Cuban Brothers and DJ Yoda and guaranteed crowd pleasers like De La Soul, Grace Jones and local favourites Band of Skulls, to the most exciting new acts that are getting those in the know all hot under the collar, you can expect nothing less than the very best to bring together everyone in the biggest party Southampton’s seen in a long, long time. Amongst the hysteria you will find plenty of mind-boggling Common People antics including the woven magic of Yarn Bombing, legendary Mr Motivator Workouts, and psychedelic 19th century salon, The People’s Front Room. A whole host of fantastical fun, daytime diversions, amusements and good times will entertain one and all including the Bigtopmania Circus, Lost & Found, Big Bears Big Balloon Disco, Big Bubble Bash, Trapeze lessons, Circus Skills, Crazy Inflatable bundle madness, Face Painting, Toddlers Play Area, Craft tents, Welly Wanging, Morris Dancing, Hoedowns, and Brass Bands. There will also be plenty of opportunities to have a small libation with an array of stunning bars, including the vintage vibes of the Day of the Dead Margarita Lounge Bar featuring cabaret, rock n roll, alternative, world and gypsy music; fantastically exotic concoctions from Josie da Bank’s super chic Jam Jar Bar and lavish behaviour at the VIP Hospitality Bar. A huge selection of delicious treats from cocktails and craft beers to lip-smacking afternoon teas and a tantalising selection of the finest Streetfood vendors around will delight the most adventurous of souls and keep you all coming back for more. One man who’s no stranger to the Bestival way is DJ Yoda. Using his turntable skills and influences as diverse as funk, b-more, kuduro, reggae, drum ‘n’ bass and even big band swing and country & western, to make unashamed party music, he’s one of our top tips for the weekend for those who like to get their groove on. No stranger to cutting the Indiana Jones theme with woofer-worrying dubstep or the Muppet Theme with 1930’s swing, his shows are peppered with film, TV and YouTube samples and visuals that lift his sets to new and stratospheric heights. We caught up with him to ask him exactly why he’s excited to be coming back to Southampton…
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | MAY 2015
We’re only a few weeks away from Common People now, are you excited? I am yeah because I’ve worked with the guys from Bestival for many years and if they’re starting to do something new then my guess is it’s probably going to be amazing, so I’m looking forward to it. What do you think it is that makes Bestival-team festivals so special? They’re definitely different to all the other festivals. As soon as summer starts I’m at a festival every weekend and if any of my friends say ‘I’m only going to come to one festival, what should I do?’ I always make sure that it’s one of the Bestival ones. They’ve just got an understanding of things that makes it different and special every time. I think a lot of it is it’s not just about the headline acts. A lot of the time festivals focus on that but it’s about so much more with the Bestival guys, the food, the fancy dress, the whole vibe of it. Do you enjoy going to festivals yourself? Would you camp? I love it! But I wouldn’t camp anymore. The last time I camped was at Bestival and I remember saying ‘that’s the last time’. My year kind of falls into a cycle where over the winter I’m DJ’ing in clubs and over the summer I’m DJ’ing in fields and I really like that balance of things. Festivals are a lot more social than clubs because I get to get out and see all the other acts that are playing. Your new album with a live hip hop band ‘Breakfast of Champions’ came out in March, how has the reaction been and what was it like putting that together? I’ve loved the reaction from it and it’s been something really good for me because all the other things I’ve released I’ve sat down and produced by myself and this is the first time that I’ve put a band together and been working with real humans with instruments and not just computers and turntables. It’s been a real challenge to do that and it’s really satisfying to do it properly and then take it out on the road. It’s been really different and really good fun. We’re hitting about seven festivals with the band so that should be great too. Can we find you at any other festivals this summer? Oh there’s a festival every weekend! Everything from Glastonbury, Bestival, Camp Bestival and then about a dozen more. Why should festival-goers make sure they catch your set? You can always expect the unexpected when I’m playing haha. Even I’ve got no idea what’s going to happen when I’m playing. We’ll all just have to turn up and see! Words: Zan Lawther

FEATURE
Brace yourselves for Finland (yes, Finland)’s hottest export since um, the big log cabin craze of 2000 and…oh nevermind! They recently set YouTube alight with their incredible hillbilly covers of rock and metal classics and now Steve ‘n’ Seagulls are on their way to the UK to show us they can do it live too. Originally just a bunch of local yokels from moderately successful bands, this merry mess of country cousins one day decided, just for laughs, to hillbillify (yes, “hillbillify” is henceforth officially a word) and shoot a video for the AC/DC staple “Thunderstruck”. Little did they know that the homebrewed video of the song would propel the provincial posse into cyberspace stardom virtually overnight. Attention from media both domestic and foreign ensued, resulting to a slew of performances ranging from festival appearances to being the house band at the christening of your grandma’s cat. A few months, a couple more videos and several newspaper clippings later, and Steve ‘n’ Seagulls has become a buzzword known to most in their native Finland. Even record labels – notorious for their oblivion of anything worth noting – had the wool pulled from their eyes. All of a sudden Steve ‘n’ Seagulls find themselves with a recording contract and set about making their first full length album. ‘Farm Machine’ is out this month and as we can’t wait to see them do their thing at Talking Heads soon, we caught up with vocalist and double bass player Pukki Kaalinen to find out a little bit more about how they’re putting the farm back into metal… How did you all meet and how did you discover you all had a passion for hillbilly rock songs? We met years ago in the town of Jyväskylä (try to pronounce that) and have played together in different bands ever since. This whole unplugged thing has been a nice change for us. How do you choose the songs you cover? Somebody has an idea, we get in the same room, bang our heads together and see what comes out. Simple as that. But not just any song will do. It has to have enough flesh on the bones, so to speak. And a “classic” status is a plus.
southampton | MAY DEVON MUSIC |MUSIC MARCH 20152015
Your debut album comes out on 11 May, what can we expect? Rock and metal covers mutilated with love. The track list is already published and can be found on our album’s pre-order site What’s your favourite song to play live? That depends a lot on the audience, but you can never go wrong with “Iron Man”…” People must often compare you to Hayseed Dixie, is there room in the world for two bluegrass tributes to AC/DC? [We think so!] Apparently there is. Besides, we’re not really bluegrass. We take our influences from here and there and try to cook up something interesting, though the starting point usually is American music. Hayseed Dixie have, by the way, quite a following in Finland. They even have a cover of a Finnish song dealing with common excuses for drinking. Do any of you own a tractor? Hiltunen’s father does. That’s the beautiful Massey-Ferguson used on You Shook Me All Night Long -video. Old man Hiltunen gave some lessons to his son and he can now perform perfect doughnuts, at least on snow! As you prepare to tour the world, is there anywhere you’re particularly looking forward to playing? England, obviously, because of the ale and because so many of the songs we do are from British bands. We’re really looking forward to going to Germany, too, but to be honest we haven’t been touring abroad enough to have favourites yet. Festival season is upon us – which festivals might we spot you at this summer? Wacken, Weinturm and Summer Breeze in Germany, Spydeberg and Rekordfestivalen in Norway and Sweden Rock in, well, Sweden. Then, if anybody is up for a trip to Finland, we’re booked to a number of Finnish festivals, Nummirock being probably the biggest. Why should we check you out when you come to Southampton later
this month? Our English is hilarious.

FEATURE Philadelphia progressive rockers Circa Survive were formed by former Saosin vocalist Anthony Green off the back of an epiphany just at the moment that Saosin were about to break, that being in this particular band wasn’t going to make him happy in the long term. He got together with guitarist Colin Frangicetto, another veteran of the local emo and hardcore scene and together they sought out guitarist Brendan Ekstrom, bassist Nick Beard and drummer Steve Clifford and team Circa Survive was complete. Their popularity has continued to climb ever since the release of their first album Juturna and they’re one of the few bands on the rock circuit today that have survived an impressive ten years without a single line up change. Perhaps their longevity is borne of their ability to reinvent themselves without excluding their current fans as they’ve travelled through the realms or psych-punk, alt-rock and prog, ending up with what is widely regarded as their most comfortable album to date, 2014’s Decensus. This month they come to the Engine Rooms with touring buddies RX Bandits and we nabbed a few minutes with Brendan to see what he thinks it is that’s kept them together and happy all this time… You’ve been on the road for a while now, how’s it going? Tour has been awesome. We’ve been jumping from some headliners to Coachella to some support shows with Brand New and all of it has been great. Yeah, you just played Coachella, how was that? Coachella is wild. It’s 70,000 of the sexiest people in the world crammed into a dusty field wearing the least amount of clothing they can get away with without their genitals getting sunburned. There are about 10,000 normal people thrown in just to remind the sexy people how sexy they are. It’s fucked up. Last year I just sat on a rock and looked at butts for hours but I’m too old for that shit. It’s exhausting. This year we played and I said fuck it and went to sleep on the bus. Do you find playing festivals different to venue shows and how was it breaking up a headline run with a festival slot? Yeah festivals are totally different. I think we base a lot of our live show on creating a mood which flows and changes with production and lighting. Unless you’re headlining a festival it’s often difficult to do that, especially outside. It can feel much less intimate because the crowd is usually really far away and whacked out of their mind on mushrooms they bought in the parking lot. But fests are still a lot of fun. You just have to embrace that it’s a different atmosphere and play the hell out of your songs. And shortly you’re headed over to the UK. How long has it been since you were last here and are you excited to come back? We are definitely excited to be back. It’s been way too long. This is a co-headline with RX Bandits, what made you decide to team up? We love those guys and their music. I think we fit well together on a lot of levels and we’ve been hoping to do something like this for a while. There’s just been conflicts in scheduling over the years. Can’t wait to finally tour with them. Their music is super inspiring.
SOUTHAMPTON MUSIC | may 2015
What can we expect from your live show? Sex. And probably Anthony putting his hands inside your mouth. Remarkably, you’ve managed over 10 years together as a band without a single line up change. That’s quite unusual these days. What do you think it is that holds you together? The feeling that there are still new things for us to accomplish together is important and keeps us motivated. It’s all about having respect for each other, knowing that we are in this together and accepting each other’s flaws while we try to remain grateful for each other’s strengths. What do you consider your biggest achievement as a band to date? Man. There are a lot of milestones along the way that stand out as things I will remember. Doing a split with sunny day real estate. Touring with the Deftones or Alice in Chains. Hearing 5,000 people all sing one of our songs. Every time a kid comes up after a show and tells me how our music got them through a loss. But if there is a biggest thing for me it’s just ten years of all of it. Still being here. Still having people support us. Still being able to do what we love. It’s crazy and we are all really grateful. You’ve toured with some amazing bands, is there anyone you’d still like to tour with or to tour with again? I’d like to tour with almost everyone again. We’ve made so many good friends over the years it’d be hard to go down that list. I feel like most of the bands on my wish list would make for a bit of a strange tour but I’d love to tour with Earth, Grails or Dub Trio. Your last album Decensus came out last year, how have you found the reaction to playing those songs live? It’s been awesome. There’s nothing better than feeling that people are coming along with us in a new direction. There’s some great energy in these jams and we love playing them. And finally, tell us three things about Circa Survive you think we should know… We are gonna bleed on the stage every damn night but the more energy we get from the crowd the more we are going to give back. The crowd makes a show. I don’t know if they always know that. You don’t need to know anything else about us. Just get your ass out to a show and sweat with us. Words: Zan Lawther

The Lost Boys’ music is heavily influenced by all the things that surround them and that they experience in everyday life. In short, The Lost Boys provide a perfect soundtrack to life as we know it with their sharp lyrics and distinctive Indie/Pop sound. So far, The Lost Boys have brought their energetic live shows to many prestigious venues, conquering the crowds along the way with notable support slots with the likes of The Enemy, The Ordinary Boys, Catfish & The Bottlemen, The Undertones and the band’s own personal hero Paul Weller. The band’s latest single ‘A Better Life’ features a guest appearance from Ocean Colour Scene’s Steve Cradock on the B-Side, ‘December Forever’ so it seems that these boys are a bit of a hit amongst their peers. We caught up with frontman Daniel Ash (who The ‘Modfather’ Paul Weller describes as “a great little songwriter!”) to find out a little bit more…
Who are you and what do you do in the band? I’m Daniel and I’ve been an alcoholic for . . oh wait, wrong meeting! I play guitar and sing. How and when did you all get together? We formed at Uni. I went for years and years looking for like-minded people so it was a relief to meet the guys in the band and start making noise together. Who are your biggest influences? The big 3 for me are The Beatles, David Bowie and The Jam. They’ve kinda been there since the start. I tend to have an obsessive nature though and will have phases of new artists every few months where I rinse their back catalogue. At the moment I’m really into Big Star. If you had to describe your sound in three words, what would you call it? Jangly quirky pop. What’s been your biggest achievement to date? We opened for Paul Weller at Hammersmith Apollo which

was a massive buzz for me. I grew up loving The Jam and they were definitely the catalyst to me starting to write proper songs that weren’t just about my guinea pig or having to have quiche for tea. It was unreal and Paul has been a total gent to us. What was it like working with him? He’s just the nicest guy. He always has the time to listen and has been kind enough to let us use his studio for free too. They say “never meet your heroes”, maybe true unless your hero is Paul Weller. We’re doing some more shows with him later in the year too! Tell us about your next show and why we should come check it out? We’re supporting The Buzzcocks at The Engine Rooms on 22nd May. It’s another pinch yourself moment really. Doesn’t seem that long ago I was bouncing around my room to ‘Everybody’s Happy Nowadays’. What’s the best gig you’ve ever been to (not your own)? Going to see Weller is always a massive experience for me, we’ve been lucky enough to be able to play with him now but we still stick around to watch his set- he always smashes it! Also, I saw Elvis Costello at the BIC a few years back and he played for 3 hours! Who even does that? I can’t even stand up for 3 hours. If Hollywood made a film about your band, who would play you guys? I think I can answer more easily who I’d like NOT to play me - Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, Kevin James - anybody in/ responsible for ‘Ghost Ship’ . . .! What is on the agenda for 2015? We got an EP of new material to release (easily our best stuff yet) and our plan is to get to the studio- make our masterpiece and take it up and down the country showing people what we can do! Hope to see you there!
